Principal’s Corner: Linda Stubbs
Welcome to the 2015-16 school year! The staff at Ceres High School is looking
forward to another a successful year. We’ve had a full year of Common Core
implementation, but it’s always good to review. Here are some commonly asked
questions and answers:
What are State Standards?
Educational Standards describe what students should know and be able to do in
each subject and in each grade level. The state of California is one of 45 states
that have adopted the same standards for English and math. Having the same
standards helps all students get a solid education, even if they change schools or
move to a different state. Teachers, parents, and educational experts designed
State Standards to prepare students for success in college and the workplace
(California Department of Education). Although there are still content area stand-
ards in science and social science, Common Core Literacy Standards need to be
infused in every subject area.
What changes should I see in my student’s education?
A big change is that there needs to be a balance between non-fiction and fictional
texts. You have seen over the past two years an increase in expository or explan-
atory articles and other texts in all subject areas, while still seeing your student
read fictional literature within certain subjects. Students will learn about the
world through text. They will be required to read and be responsible for more
challenging materials. In addition, they will be required to use evidence from text
in presentations and in writing.
State Standards Math will build skills across grade levels. Students will learn more
about less and have a much deeper understanding of fewer concepts. Students
will be required to think fast and solve problems. They will need to “really know
it” so they can “really do it” by applying mathematical knowledge to real world
situations.
How does this fit into 21st Century Learning and Career/College Readi-
ness?
State Standards focus on Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking and
Creativity. These 4 C’s are what experts have said are critical skills that will help
prepare young students for careers and college.
Our goal at CHS is to create an educational environment where your student will
flourish and be well-prepared for the future. If you have questions regarding State

¡Bienvenidos al año escolar 2015-16! El personal de la escuela Ceres High está a la
espera de otro año exitoso. Hemos tenido un año completo de implementación de
los Estándares Principales Comunes, pero siempre es bueno repasar. Aquí hay algu-
nas preguntas y respuestas frecuentes:
¿Cuáles son Los Estándares Estatales?
Los Estándares Educativos describen lo que los estudiantes deben saber y ser capaces
de hacer en cada materia y en cada nivel de grado. El estado de California es uno de
45 estados que han adoptado los mismos estándares para inglés y matemáticas. Tener
los mismos estándares ayuda a todos los estudiantes a conseguir una educación sóli-
da, aun si ellos cambian escuelas o se mudan a un estado diferente. Los maestros, los
padres, y los expertos educativos diseñaron los Estándares Estatales para preparar a
estudiantes para el éxito en el colegio y el lugar de trabajo (el Departamento de Cali-
fornia de la Educación). Aunque todavía hay estándares en las áreas de ciencia y cien-
cia social, los Estándares de Alfabetismo Principales Comunes tienen que ser imple-
mentado en cada especialidad.
¿Qué cambios debo ver en la educación de mi estudiante?
Un cambio grande es que tiene que haber un balance entre ficción y textos ficticios.
Usted ha visto en los últimos dos años un aumento de artículos expositivos o explica-
tivos y otros textos en todas las especialidades, todavía viendo que su estudiante lea
la literatura ficticia dentro de ciertas materias. Los estudiantes aprenderán sobre el
mundo por el texto. Se requerirá que ellos lean y sean responsables de materiales
más desafiantes. Además, se requerirá que ellos usen pruebas del texto en presenta-
ciones y por escrito.
Las Matemáticas Principales Comunes construirán habilidades a través de niveles de
los grados. Los estudiantes aprenderán más sobre menos y tendrán un entendimiento
mucho más profundo con menos conceptos. Se requerirá que estudiantes piensen
rápido y solucionen problemas. Ellos necesitarán “realmente saber” para que “puedan
realmente hacerlo” aplicando el conocimiento matemático a verdaderas situaciones
mundiales.
¿Cómo cabe todo esto en la Preparación de Carrera/Colegio y Aprendiza-
je del siglo veintiuno?
Los Estándares Principales Comunes se enfocan en la Comunicación, Colaboración,
Pensamiento Crítico y Creatividad. Estas 4 Cs son las que los expertos han dicho son
habilidades críticas que ayudarán a preparar a estudiantes jóvenes para carreras y co-
legio.
Nuestra meta en CHS es crear un ambiente educativo donde su estudiante prospera-

BULLDOG DISCIPLINE
Hello BULLDOGS, My name is Joe Luke, (Mr. Luke). I am directly responsible for enforcing
school rules and I’m the representative for discipline/safety at the school. Many matters
come to my attention and I investigate all that cross my desk. I believe in holding young
men and women accountable and I treat them with respect. I will always inform students of
the rules and then enforce those rules. So my motto is “inform then enforce”. If you need
anything, or if I can be of assistance, please call me at x 5372. I look forward to a great year!
SATURDAY SCHOOL POLICY
As we began the school year, “Saturday school” will begin on September 19, 2015. The dis-
cipline office issues Saturday school to hold students accountable. If students miss, there is a
Policy in place. The 5-7-9 policy is now in effect. What that means is this: If a student
misses 1 Saturday school = 5 lunch detentions, 2 Saturday schools= 7 lunch de-
tentions, 3 = 9 lunch detentions. Any additional misses will result in further conse-
quences. Remember Saturday school is the student’s way to correct/make-up for their
short comings. So not going is additional defiance in the eyes of administration.
ELECTRONIC DEVICES:
Students are to be reminded that electronic devices are to be used during lunch hours only.
PARKING ON CAMPUS: students are to have a valid license and proof of insurance for
the vehicle they are driving on campus. Come to the discipline office and then get a CHS
parking sticker.
DRESS CODE: The CUSD dress code policy is in effect at CHS. Administration and staff
are very diligent at keeping student’s dress code appropriate. This year we have placed an
emphasis on the Green Cross, LRG shirts and the COOKIES” shirts. These shirts are an
indirect reference to medical marijuana, or drug laced edibles. CHS will address anything:
crosses, cookies, or palm trees or plants that look like Marijuana plants. CUSD & CHS will
not allow students to wear shirts, hats, and sox that depict drugs, alcohol, or violence.
There are several styles of shirts, but here are a few examples of what to look for.
SCHOOL RULES
Thus far, students have been doing well with following the rules implemented by the Ceres
Unified School District (CUSD) and CHS administration. If a student or parent has any
questions regarding the rules and expectations of student’s behavior, it is clearly outlined in
the student handbook. The CHS master calendar is also listed in the back of the handbook.

PÓLIZA DE ESCUELA DE SABADO
Conforme comenzamos el nuevo año escolar, “escuela de sábado” comenzará el 19 de septiembre 2015.
La oficina de disciplina asigna escuela de sábado para responsabilizar a los estudiantes. Si los estudiantes
no asisten, hay una póliza que seguir. La póliza de 5-7-9 está ahora en efecto. Lo que esto significa es lo
siguiente: Si un estudiante falta 1 día de escuela del sábado = 5 detenciones de almuerzo, 2 escue-
las de sábado = 7 detenciones de almuerzo, 3 = 9 detenciones de almuerzo. Cualquier falta adi-
cional causará consecuencias adicionales. Recuerde que la escuela de sábado es para que el estudiante pue-
da corregir algo que ha hecho. Entonces, si no asiste, es desafio adicional en los ojos de administración.
DISPOSITIVOS ELECTRONICOS:
Los estudiantes deben recordar que los dispositivos electrónicos no deben estar en uso durante el horario
escolar.
ESTACIONARSE EN EL CAMPUS:
Los estudiantes deben tener una licencia válida y prueba de seguro para el vehículo que está conduciendo
en el campus. Por favor de venir a la oficina de disciplina para obtener un permiso para estacionarse en
CHS.
CÓDIGO DE VESTUARIO: El código de vestuario CUSD está en efecto en CHS. Administración y el
personal son muy diligente en mantener que los niños sigan el código de vestir apropiado. Este año hemos
puesto énfasis en las camisetas de Cruz Verde, camisetas de LRG, y camisetas de “COOKIES”. Estas cami-
setas son una referencia indirecta a la marihuana medicinal, o comestibles mezcladas con drogas. CHS lla-
mará la atención a cualquier cosa que tenga cruces, “cookies”, o palmeras que parecen plantas de marihua-
na. CUSD y CHS no permite que los estudiantes usen camisetas, gorras, calcetines que representen dro-
gas, alcohol o violencia. Hay varios estilos de camisetas, pero aquí están algunos ejemplos de lo que debe
buscar.
REGLAS ESCOLARES
Hasta ahora, los estudiantes han seguido bien las reglas puestas en práctica por el Distrito Escolar Unifica-
do de Ceres (CUSD) y administración de CHS. Si un estudiante o padre tiene alguna pregunta acerca de
las reglas y las expectativas del comportamiento del estudiante, están claramente perfilados en el guía de
estudiante. El calendario escolar de CHS también está detrás del guía. También puede encontrar Informa-

Counseling Corner
English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC)
If your child is an English Learner (EL), or if you are interested in knowing more about CHS’s EL program, be
sure to join the English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC). This committee meets a few times throughout
the school year to learn about CHS’s programs and services for ELs. The first ELAC meeting will be held on
Thursday, October 29th at 6:30 pm in the Student Center/Cafeteria. All parents are invited to attend. Your
comments, concerns, and suggestions are welcomed!
College Corner: Seniors – this is a big year for you and we are coming upon a very busy season with testing and the college application process. New this year will be College and Career Counseling in the library every Wednesday at 2:45 (parents are welcome to attend). There is also a College & Scholarship Bulletin, printed monthly and posted on the website to answer some of your most common questions and provide you with important dates to remember. If you have any questions, please feel free to make an appointment with your Learning Director, Ms. Petroni.
Additional Information
Students are working on their 1st semester grades, which post onto their official transcript on Dec 18th, 2015. During the course of the semester Progress Reports and Mid Term Grades are mailed home approximately every four weeks. Please be looking for these reports in the mail and if you see that your child is earning a “D” or “F” please contact the teacher to discuss ways in which the grade/s can be improved. It is important for students to pass their classes so that they can earn their 30 credits for 1st semester and be on track for grad-uation. Students should take advantage of tutoring, teacher’s office hours and communicate with teachers on a regular basis. Tutoring starts on September 8th, 2015.
Please be mindful that finals week is on Dec 15th, 16th & 17th, 2015 Finals are a big portion of the semester grades; therefore, it is important for students to study, be prepared and be in classes during this week. Please keep these dates in mind as you plan your Holiday Vacations as it is imperative for students be in school on Dec 15th, 16th and 17th, 2015.
Senior Attendance “20 Day Rule” As educators and parents our goal is to have every CHS senior walk the stage on June 2nd, 2016 and re-
ceive a diploma. Good attendance has long been one of the key predictors to student success. The senior “20
Day Rule” was designed to prevent excessive absenteeism in one of the most critical years of a student’s life.
Seniors who are absent 20 or more days during the school year without proper medical practitioner’s verifica-
tion are attendance ineligible. Attendance ineligibility means that a student will not be permitted to participate
in senior activities including the Senior Trip and the graduation ceremony. All partial and full day absences
count towards the 20 days or 120 periods except those backed up with a doctor, dentist or official note from a
court appearance. The official note must be presented to our attendance office within 48 hours of the students
return to school.

Rincón de Consejería Comité Asesor Para Estudiantes de Inglés Como Segundo Idioma (ELAC)
Si su hijo/a es un estudiante de Aprendizaje de Ingles (EL), o si usted está interesado en obtener mas información sobre el programa de EL de CHS, asegúrese de asistir a la segunda junta del año escolar del Comité Asesor para Estudiantes de Inglés Como Segundo Idioma (ELAC). Este comité se reúne varias veces durante el año escolar para aprender a cerca de los programas y servicios para EL. La primer junta de ELAC será el jueves, 29 de octu-bre, a las 6:30 p.m. en el Centro Estudiantil/Cafetería. Todos los padres están invitados a asistir. ¡Sus comenta-rios, inquietudes y sugerencias son bienvenidos!

Grado 12- este es un gran año para ustedes y viene una temporada muy ocupada con los exámenes y el proce-so de solicitud de la universidad! La novedad de este año será la Consejería para la Universidad y Carreras en la biblioteca todos los miércoles a las 2:45 (los padres están invitados a asistir). También habrá un Boletín de Cole-gio y Becas imprimido mensualmente y puesta en el sitio web para responder algunas de las preguntas más co-munes y le proporcionará las fechas importantes para recordar. Si tiene alguna pregunta, por favor de hacer una cita con la Directora de Aprendizaje, la Sra. Petroni.
Información Adicional
Los estudiantes están trabajando en sus calificaciones del primer semestre, que se publican en su expediente académico oficial, el 18 de dic, 2015 . Durante el transcurso del semestre, los informes de progreso semestrales y medio plazo se envían a casa aproximadamente cada cuatro semanas. Por favor busque estos informes en el correo y si usted ve que su hijo tiene "D" o "F", por favor póngase en contacto con el maestro para discutir la ma-nera en la que puede mejorar la calificación. Es importante que los estudiantes pasan sus clases para que puedan obtener los 30 créditos del 1er semestre y estar en camino a la graduación. Los estudiantes deben tomar ventaja de tutoría, las horas de oficina del maestro/a y comunicarse con los maestros/as regularmente. La tutoría comien-za el 8 de septiembre, 2015.
Por favor tenga en mente que la semana de exámenes finales es el 15, 16 y 17 de diciembre, 2015. Los exáme-nes finales son una gran parte de las calificaciones del semestre; por lo tanto, es importante que los estudiantes estudien, se preparen y estén en clases durante esta semana. Guarde estas fechas en mente al planificar sus va-caciones de invierno, ya que es imprescindible que los estudiantes estén en la escuela, el 15, 16 y 17 de diciem-bre 2015.
“Regla de 20 Días” para Estudiantes de grado 12 Como educadores y padres, nuestra meta es que todo estudiante de grado 12 en CHS participe en la ceremonia de graduación el 2 de junio, 2016 y reciba su diploma. Buena asistencia ha sido desde hace tiempo uno de los indicadores claves para el éxito del estudiante. La “Regla de 20 Días” fue diseñada para prevenir absentismo ex-cesivo en uno de los años mas críticos de la vida del estudiante. Estudiantes que están ausentes 20 días o mas durante el año escolar sin verificación apropiada de su medico son inelegibles. Inelegibles por asistencia quiere decir que su estudiante no será permitido participar en las actividades de ultimo año que incluye el viaje de gra-duación y la ceremonia de graduación. Todas las faltas de días parciales y completas cuentan hacia los 20 días o 120 periodos con excepción los que son verificados con nota del medico, dentista o de aparición en corte. Las notas oficiales se deben entregar a nuestra oficina de asistencia dentro de 48 horas que el estudiante regrese a clases.
