Graduation is a memorable and worthy celebration of your hard earned success. I hope you and your supporters have a wonderful day.

This year I am delighted that we are celebrating the achievements of more students than ever before, and I warmly welcome each of you to the Aber alumni community. In doing so, you are in excellent company. Many of our alumni are leaders in their field, and their chosen careers take them to all corners of the globe. I encourage you to follow in their footsteps, explore all that the world has to offer, take the opportunities that arise, and like them, build upon your Aberystwyth University degree and the stimulus of your activities here.

Thank you for choosing to study at our University. We have valued your contribution to student life, and how you and your fellow students enriched our lives and experiences. As you graduate, take with you what you have learnt during your studies and use your knowledge and skills to make a difference in your future careers. We wish you every success and contentment. In Aberystwyth, we will continue to develop this remarkable University for generations to come. Keep in touch, and please remember we’re here to help you through the support of our staff and our broader community of alumni and friends.

Good luck!

Sir Emyr Jones Parry President

We are incredibly pleased that you can join us on this special occasion. As soon-to-be graduates or proud family, friends and supporters - you are all welcome. I sincerely hope you enjoy your time at Aberystwyth, celebrating

the success of all our hard-working students. News of individual students excelling academically is always welcome – not to

mention their notable achievements in sports, debating, entrepreneurial challenges and numerous hours of community volunteering. Graduation sees the culmination of all our students’ successes, and is an unbeatable occasion!

As we wave farewell to our graduands, we welcome our graduates to the alumni community. Wherever you venture next, we want to keep in touch to learn what you are doing. In return, we offer continuing support and advice, and invitations to Aberystwyth University events, held around the world.

Please remember there will always be a warm welcome for you at Aberystwyth. Whether you’re simply passing through or returning to study here, you can be sure that we will be pleased to see you.

We would also like to keep you abreast of developments here. One exciting project on the horizon is the redevelopment of our beautiful Old College. We aim to establish a multipurpose graduate centre, and a cultural quarter for the town, to ensure a sustainable future for this iconic building.

Thank you for being with us today. On behalf of all my colleagues here at Aberystwyth, I wish you a wonderful graduation day and every success in the future.

On arrival, students should make their way to the Round Theatre on the first floor of the Arts Centre to register. During registration, students will be handed their card with details of their seat number, together with any guest tickets requested.

After registering, please make your way to the Parry Williams building (Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies) to collect your robe. Depending on the time, you may like to take your graduation photos before the ceremony. Tempest Photography, the University’s official Graduation Photographers, will be available from 8am to 6pm.

A rehearsal is held before each ceremony at 9.30am for morning, and 1.30pm for afternoon ceremonies. During the rehearsal, parents and supporters are welcome to relax in one of the Arts Centre’s cafés, take a wander around one of the galleries, or pop to the Students’ Union for a coffee.

All students should be in their seats at least 15 minutes before the ceremony, guests are welcome to make their way to the seats in the gallery of the Great Hall from 10.30am or 2.30pm depending on the time of your ceremony.

A full programme of the ceremony, including the names of today’s graduates and details of the procession and musical interlude, can be found in the centre pages of this booklet.

Following the ceremony, graduates are asked to make their way to the La Scala steps to have their group photograph before heading to the marquee behind the Arts Centre for a celebratory glass of fizz or juice.

Please ensure that you return your gown to the Parry Williams building, by your agreed time.

Enjoy!

A veritable rainbow of gowns can be seen adorning our students and staff at Graduation. Each University has its own style and the cap, gown and hood have a particular meaning which signifies the level of the qualification obtained.

The members of staff on stage usually wear the gown which demonstrates the highest qualification they hold. As the University attracts staff from all over the world, there’s a vast range of gowns on show!

Aberystwyth University’s own gowns are based on a colour palette of green and red, with the undergraduate and postgraduate gowns being black with varying hoods and the PhD being a deep red coloured gown with green adornments. A small number of students began their studies when Aberystwyth was part of the University of Wales and therefore wear the gowns from this period.

We challenge you to count the different gowns you come across during a ceremony!

Gownspotting!

During the five days of Graduation, the University welcomes over 10,000 students and supporters to Aberystwyth. It’s a fantastic time for all involved, but it’s important that you know what’s available to you and when. Here is your quick guide to Graduation, including details of where you can take five minutes out and rest with a cup of tea and slice of cake!

Tony OrmeEnterprise Manager

“Congratulations on your Graduation! Your next step might be employment; maybe further study or even taking a well-earned break.

For some graduates, self-employment is an interesting career option, either setting up and running a new enterprise now or in the future (once they have experienced working for more established organisations, first). Some graduates set up new businesses as their full-time occupation, others run their enterprises alongside employment or further study.

If you are interested either now or in the future in the feasibility of turning a good business idea you might have into a successful new enterprise, then Aberystwyth University would be keen to support you, particularly if your proposed new enterprise is being set up in the Aberystwyth area.

The sort of help and support you might need in the start-up phase could well include one-to-one business mentoring, business start-up skills training, information on start-up funding or networking opportunities. The University, in conjunction with local enterprise partners, offers a range of business start-up opportunities. The support includes our popular “Enterprise Wednesdays” – a regular series of workshops and presentations to support those setting up new businesses; Business Start-up Week – a boot-camp style week of events to help anyone with an idea to develop a business plan; and the Crisalis Enterprise Network – keeping those with new graduate businesses in touch with one another.

All of these services are FREE and available to Aberystwyth Graduates, as well as to students and staff members. Please do keep in touch and let me know if there’s any further support you need to make your business a success.”

My Aber: The Harbour Trap

T he long winding coast road to Aber from my home village offers plenty of tantalising glimpses of surf, and if there are waves there, there are bound to be waves at the Harbour Trap Over Trefechan Bridge and left, the crush of tall buildings and narrow streets opens out like a river delta as it approaches the sea until there’s nothing but a bit of prom and the ocean in front of you. Left again and the harbour soon appears While the marina itself has afforded me many happy daydreams of boat-owning and globe-trotting, it is the open sea to the west that is the real draw, where the promenade ends and there’s nothing but the lifeboat station building on the road facing the sea. When I worked in Information Services I used to escape

down here to watch the surfers at lunchtime. An hour wasn’t enough time for me to surf though, and the crowds put me off. There were (and still are) always more goatboats (kayaks) than I could handle, plus groms (young surfers), kooks (beginners), rippers (surfers way better than me) and planks (longboards) I would crack open my lunchbox, take a

PhD student Kat Dawes describes her favourite part of Aber.

few photos and feel quite glad that I didn’t have to get togged up in the hood, gloves, boots and thick wetsuit required in winter, or battle the pack and the current for a wave But it was always a bit of a cop-out — a challenge unmet By the time I returned to Aber for my PhD, I had become a better surfer; I also had more opportunity, and the day came where the waves were clean and there wasn’t a soul out — surfing gold. It was time to suit up and dive in. The view from the line-up is awesome The harbour wall

and rocky beach floated in front and to the south of me and I could see people sitting in their cars watching. Further north were houses, more prom, the castle and the war memorial, all tilting gently as the swells pushed beneath me. A little boat chugged out past the harbour’s protective arm. Ten minutes to get the place dialled, and I surfed three good waves, taking the steep drop and racing along with my back to the water before bogging down as the wave’s energy dissipated. My first surf at the Harbour Trap, and it won’t be the last

Padarn Hall reunionI n 1961, a new hall of residence opened in the converted

Lion Royal Hotel at the top of Great Darkgate Street Padarn Hall, as it was known, accommodated 50 to 60

students, the first Warden being Dr Ken Walters, who had been appointed as a Lecturer in Applied Mathematics in 1960.Many of the students who were a part of those early Padarn

days have kept in close contact with each other over the subsequent decades Evidence of this camaraderie is provided by the fact that on 13 May 2013, a group of the class of 1961 – 1963 met for a reunion lunch in Shrewsbury, along with Ken Walters, now a Distinguished Research Professor at Aber.Padarn Hall was an excellent example of the warm family

atmosphere that many Aber students have appreciated during their stay here

The photograph from the reunion includes some of those who are also in the 1962 soccer team photo - matching the faces is a challenge after 50 years!

set out in detail in the Plan is to ensure that by 2017 Aberystwyth is consistently ranked in the top 30 universities in the

UK, and the top 250 in the worldOne of the biggest strategic changes within the University is the grouping of its seventeen academic departments

into seven interdisciplinary Institutes. The academic departments will continue to provide their excellent teaching and

Hinterland

A new player has emerged in the popular thread of

Nordic-noir detective dramas. Set in the dramatic

backdrop of the countryside around Aberystwyth,

Y Gwyll / Hinterland breaks new ground by being filmed

simultaneously in two languages, for broadcast on the Welsh

language channel S4C and in English on BBC Cymru Wales

and BBC Four. Subtitles have become much more acceptable

to viewers through popular imported Scandinavian dramas

such as Wallander and The Killing, and Y Gwyll/Hinterland

also makes use of subtitling to reflect the naturally bilingual

nature of the community The series brings the Aber region to

an international audience, with Danish broadcast rights sold

to DR Denmark even before screening in the UK.

Aberystwyth alumni watching the programmes will be

reminded not only of the beautiful bleak winter backdrop

which is so reminiscent of Aber outside the tourist season,

but also the language and sense of Welsh community, where

both languages mix in casual conversation and everyone

knows everyone else – six degrees of separation reduced

to around two! Familiar bits of the Aber we know and love

(without the grisly murders, of course), and some familiar

faces, appear in every episode

However, it’s not so much the final product that has had

an impact on the University, but the process of production.

Once the decision had been made to set the series in

Ceredigion, opportunities opened for Aber students to gain

invaluable hands-on experience of the production of a major

international television series, with Fiction Factory a willing

host Students were able to undertake work placements,

shadowing professional roles and appearing as extras on film.

Ellen Dingstad from Norway, a third year Theatre, Film and

Television Studies student, said, “Working alongside industry

professionals was not only educational, but also exciting and

fun I applied for the placement through the encouragement

of my lecturers, and was granted the post of ‘Producer’

“My tasks were similar to that of a runner on set, but I was

also fortunate enough to work in the production office. When

my placement ended I was even offered a part time job.

The placement has improved my CV and my understanding

of what it takes to work in the business It might not be the

easiest profession to get into, but the reward of helping to

create something is unsurpassable”

Dr Jamie Medhurst, Head of the Department of Theatre,

Film and Television Studies at Aber said, “The partnership

with Fiction Factory, one of the UK’s foremost production

companies, during the production of Y Gwyll/Hinterland

highlighted how a world-class teaching and research

department such as the Department of Theatre, Film and

Television Studies was able to provide first class placements

for its students, all of whom benefited immensely from

working with the company

33

“I’m extremely grateful to Fiction Factory for providing

such positive experiences for our students and, indeed, staff

who worked with them during their time in Aberystwyth.

The partnership also demonstrated the Department’s

commitment to working with the creative and cultural

industries in Wales and beyond for the benefit of students,

staff and the production company.”

The University also provided some of the locations for

filming, with Plas Gogerddan appearing as the interior of the

police station and beautiful Old College having some cameo

appearances Old College starred again in October when the

official première was held with a party in the Quad. With

atmospheric lighting and strategically placed ‘Police/Heddlu

Scene of Crime’ tape, the building was transformed for the

first screening.

Aber alumni featured throughout the project, including

producer Gethin Scourfield and actor Aneurin Hughes

(Chief Superintendent Brian Prosser) Y Gwyll / Hinterland

was produced by Fiction Factory in association with S4C,

Tinopolis, BBC Cymru Wales, S4C Co-Production Fund

and All3Media International Ltd. The series will be sold to

broadcasters across the world through distributors and

co-production partners ALL3MEDIA International. Following

its world debut on S4C in October 2013 it was broadcast on

BBC Cymru Wales and BBC Four in early 2014 and by Danish

broadcasters DR Denmark.

Vice-Chancellor’s Charity of the Year

Now in its third year, the Vice-Chancellor’s Charity of the Year appeal seeks to raise as much funding as possible for a worthy cause.

Aa number of occasions arise during the year, where fundraising for a local charity is possible, the Vice-Chancellor’s Charity of the Year provides a focus for community fundraising and charitable donations.

This year, nominations for the Vice-Chancellor’s Charity were sought from University students and staff. The list of nominations – all worthy in themselves - was whittled down to a shortlist of nine charities by the sabbatical team of the Students’ Union and the University Executive. Following a week of voting and hundreds of votes cast, the Aberystwyth Lifeboat and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), was chosen as the charity for 2014/15.

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. Volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service in the UK and Ireland from 236 lifeboat stations, including Aberystwyth. Additionally the RNLI has more than 1,000 lifeguards on over 180 beaches around the UK and operates a specialist flood rescue team, which can respond anywhere across the UK and Ireland when inland flooding puts lives at risk.

We look forward to working with the Aberystwyth Lifeboat and the RNLI team during the forthcoming year and invite you to learn more about their work by chatting to the charity’s representatives at the stall in the foyer of the Great Hall or visiting www.aberystwythlifeboat.org.uk.

11Graduation 2014

Page 14: Ceremony 10 Programme

I have an admission to make. This will be my first official Aberystwyth University Graduation Ceremony. Although I am a proud Aber alumnus – History, 1992

in case you were wondering – I did not attend the official ceremony back then.

No, this wasn’t a massive blunder and I did not turn up on the wrong day. Nor was I backpacking around the globe hacking through jungles, working the bars on Bondi Beach or getting a misspelt tattoo in Thailand. Instead, I went to the “unofficial” ceremony organised by UMCA (Aberystwyth’s Welsh-speaking Students’ Union). UMCA, which celebrated its 40th anniversary earlier this year, was in dispute with the University authorities at the time due to its weak bilingual policy. I am glad to say that things have progressed, the University now has a clear approach to the equality of English and Welsh, and both UMCA and the Students’ Union are fully engaged in representing the students’ voices in the University Council meetings and on various committees. The bilingual policy is the reason you will hear a lot of Welsh used during the ceremonies as well as on our University signage, documents and correspondence. It is said that you know you’re in Wales when you see “ARAF – SLOW” painted on the roads – as if we needed any reminding!

Your son or daughter may well have studied part or all of their degree with us through the medium of Welsh and we are building on our provision in this respect across more and more subject areas. Even if they did not undertake any study in Welsh they may well have picked up some of the language during their time here in Aberystwyth. We are proud that this too is part of the Aber Experience since it gives so many of our students exposure to cultural diversity and this will stand them in good stead in the future.

But back to the ceremony and like many of our happy new graduates my parents too will be attending their first official Aberystwyth Graduation Ceremony. Despite their moral guidance and financial support first-time round they took my insistence that I would only attend the UMCA ceremony very much in their stride and, thankfully, had a thoroughly good time. On this occasion, however, they will be in similar shoes to your good selves – a little bit lost, a little trepidatious, and definitely proud and maybe emotional. And as it is my first time – I will be too.

Dr Rhodri Llwyd Morgan

We asked our Pro Vice-Chancellor for Welsh Language and Culture, and External Engagement, Dr Rhodri Llwyd Morgan to share his experience of Graduation...

Ceremony 10The Great Hall

Friday 18 July 2014 3pm

Procedures of the CongregationThe ceremony begins with the reading of the Proclamation by one of the graduating students. It recognises the achievements and success of the graduating students, and expresses the hope that they will contribute to knowledge and wellbeing for future generations, and confront the challenges that face our world.

In each ceremony there will be candidates for initial (undergraduate) and higher (postgraduate) degrees. Candidates will be presented individually to the Vice-Chancellor. For each degree the presenter will normally be the Head of the appropriate Department. Candidates will be conducted to the stage by Marshals where they will be presented to the Vice-Chancellor and their names will be read out. After each group have returned to their seats, the Vice-Chancellor will address the appropriate formula to the whole group, and they will also receive a greeting from the President or Vice-President.

The formulae used during the ceremony may be translated as follows:

The Presenter’s formula –

Anrhydeddus Is-Ganghellor, cyflwynaf i chi fyfyrwyr o’n Prifysgol ni a ennillodd radd…..

Honorable Vice-Chancellor, I present to you students of our University who have gained the degree of ……

The Vice-Chancellor’s formula –

Trwy awdurdod y Brifysgol a ymddiriedwyd i mi, derbyniaf chwi i radd….. ac i holl freiniau’r radd hon.

By the authority of the University, entrusted to me, I admit you to the degree of ….. and to all the privileges of this degree.

The President or Vice-President greets the graduates with the words –

Boed eich gofal yn wastad dros lwydd ac anrhydedd ein Prifysgol a’n Gwlad.

May your care ever be for the success and good name of our University and Country.

In the case of higher degrees there is a different form of greeting, stating that the University is pleased to admit the graduate as a Master or Doctor. Smaller groups of graduands for higher degrees may be addressed by the Vice-Chancellor and the President or Vice-President on the stage, and will then turn to the audience for acknowledgement.
