Mystery Figures:Mystery Figures:1. Broken into several parts, it is possible to walk

inside this vast, landscape sculpture2. Carved from wood, the knotholes and wood

grain determine the shape of this figure. The spaces are as important as the shapes

3. A perfect example of Moore’s enclosed space, the negative spaces in this work have become as important as the positive spaces

4. The stylized but realistic work was influenced by Greek and Roman art

5. The segmented head of this tall, angular and linear standing figure resembles that of an insect

Page 6: Ceramics I May 2011

Modeling a Figure:Modeling a Figure: Sculpt a clay figure that incorporates Henry Moore’s unique

concept of “enclosed space” by “opening up” spaces around the shapes.

Begin by creating a biomorphic abstraction of the monumental figures:

WARRIOR MADDONNA ODALISQUE

drawn in the earlier class (biomorphism is a description of an unknown organic species that follows its own laws of growth)

Consider how to stylize or simplify the curvilinear shape of the figure into basic organic forms, weighted in some areas by gravity and opening interior spaces in other areas by attaching the appendages to the torso

Page 7: Ceramics I May 2011

Henry Moore Figure ReflectionHenry Moore Figure Reflection1. Make a POSITIVE statement about the technical qualities of the work

2. ASK a question about the formal qualities of the work

Unity – how parts contribute to the whole Balance – symmetry, asymmetry Rhythm – repetition of a theme, shape or design Dominance – the importance as it related to all other aspects

3. Make a SUGGESTION about the expressive qualities:

Tension – tranquil, dynamic, powerful, lumpish, relaxed, conflicting Mood – whimsical, playful, clumsy, mysterious, reflexive, austere, quiet Ideal– fearless, heroic, majestic, noble, authoritative, commonplace

Walking Man: (page 3) Freeze a figure in motion to capture the elongated form that is characteristic of Alberto Giacometti’s figures

Portrait Bust: (page 6) Draw a disproportionally large base to balance a figure in space that mimics Alberto Giacometti’s tall, thin, elongated features: Tiny head, long neck, large shoulders

Dog: (pages 8-9) Emphasize the elongation of body parts by distorting the shape of the a torso and stretching out the legs and the tail

An easy way to learn to draw the full figure is by drawing the figure from a back view. Drawing a figure from the back minimizes details, stresses shape, and eliminates the face.

Modigliani Inspired Bust:Modigliani Inspired Bust: Work from a live model to draw a person's

head and face using exaggeration to communicate emotion. Consider the inner temperament or spirit of the model in order to incorporate a specific facial expression

Use the clay to form a person's head. Make the shapes and planes of the face and fit together in a 2/3:1/3 ratio

Add the features of the face using almond-shaped eyes, a mouth shaped like a half circle and with hair carved in a linear pattern
