Welcometothe2009issueoftheCollegeofEducation&ProfessionalStudies’Passport to Success.ThePublication’sCommitteeandMr.MikeZenanko,editor,havedoneanoutstandingjobofhighlightingsomeoftheaccomplishmentsofourstudents,faculty,andstaffoverthepastyear. Theleadstoryisbitter-sweetfortheCollege.Dr.KathleenFrieryhasdecidedtoretire.ShewilldosoeffectiveJune1,2010.IwishIcouldpentheappropriatewordstoexpressmyadmirationandgratitudeforwhatshehasmeanttoCEPSoverthepastthirty-sixyears.Iamespeciallyappreciativeofwhatshemeanttomeduringmytenureasassociatedeanandnowdeanofthecollege.Herprofessionalinsightandwisdomareremarkable,andwillbesorelymissed.Kathleen,weintheCEPSwishyouallthejoyandhappinessretirementshouldbring. Onapositivenoteforthecollege,pleasejoinmeinwelcomingDr.JordanBarkleyasournewdepartmentheadforSecondaryEducation.Dr.BarkleyisnotnewtoJSU;hehasservedasanassistantprofessorinSecondaryEducationforthepastfiveyears.However,heisnewtoadministration.IamconfidentinDr.Barkley’sleadershipskillsandinthequalityoffacultythatmakeupthedepartmentofSecondaryEducation.Thefuturelooksextremelybright! Iwanttotakethisopportunitytocongratulatethefacultyandstaffofourcounselingprograms(CounselorEducationandCommunityCounseling).OverthepastyeartheseprofessionalshaveworkextremelyhardtosecurenationalaccreditationthroughtheCouncilforAccreditationofCounselingandRelatedEducationalPrograms(CACREP).ThesitevisitbyrepresentativesofthenationalorganizationtookplaceinNovemberof2009.Theevaluationresultedinastellarreview,withnoareasofimprovementsighted.Intheexitinterviewtheteamcommentedonwhatanexcellentjobthefacultyandstaffhaddoneinputtingtogetherthecounselingprogramsandpreparingtheinstitutionalreport.TheywentontocommentthatalltheaccreditationmaterialfromJSUwaspresentedinsuchamatteritwasasifJSUwasapplyingforcontinuingaccreditationandnotitsinitialapplication.AllIcansayis,ajobwelldoneDrs.KathleenFriery,NancyFox,JerryKiser,TommyTurner,MelanieWallaceandJanChandler.YouaretheBEST! AfinalwordisinregardtoourpursuitofrenovationsofandadditionstoRamonaWoodHall.YoumaybeinterestedtoknowthatnotasinglebrickhasbeenlaidinthenameofeducationatJSUsince1968.YetmostprogramsatJSU,someintheCEPS,havebeenaffordedneworrenovatedfacilitiesoverthepasttentotwentyyears.GiventhecurrenteconomicclimateandthefocusonfacilitiesatJSU,theredoesn’tseemtobemuchhopeforthistochange,atleastnotintheimmediatefuture.Becauseofthis,weinthecollegeareventuringintotheworldofinstitutionaldevelopmentthatwillrequireustosecurefundingfromexternalsources.Hopefullythroughnamingrightsforthebuildingaswellasnamingrightsforindividualunitsandprograms,wecanraisethenecessaryfunds.Althoughwehavebeenaffordedmuchoftheinfrastructure,mainlytechnology,necessarytoprovideexceptionalteachereducationprograms,thefacilityweworkiniswoefullybehindthetimes.Iwantyoutonotethatalthoughalargesumisnecessarytorealizeourdream,everydimeismeaningful,sopleasesupportyourcollegebyincludingusinyourphilanthropicplansforthefuture.

Dr.KathleenFriery,professoranddepartmentheadoftheDepartmentofEducationalResources,willberetiringJune1,2010afterthirty-sixyearsofservicetoJacksonvilleStateUniversity.Duringthattime,shehas
twoterms,aswellastheofficesofsecretaryandnewslettereditor.Shehasconsistentlypresentedatinternational,national,regional,andstateconferencesintheareasofcounselingandeducationaltechnology.ForherahighlightwasbeingselectedasthefirstCounselorEducator/MentorofALCAChapterVin2001.
servedasprofessor,thecoordinatorofacademicadvisementforfiveyears,anddepartmentheadforthepasttenyears. “Asdepartmenthead—Ilovetechnologyandstrivetomodeltheuseoftechnologyinmyteachinganddutiesasadepartmenthead.IhavebeentoldthatIamonsteroidswhenitcomestousingtechnologyandLiveTextandI’mproudofthatlabel!”saidDr.Friery. Dr.FrieryhasservedastheAlabamaCounselingAssociationChapterVpresidentandpresident-electfor
Dr.Frieryrecalls,“AspecialexperienceformewastobeinvolvedinathreeyearprogramcalledReadinessEducationforAchievingCareerHeights(REACH).Thiswasfundedbya$50,000grantanddirectedbytheCalhounCountyChamberofCommerce.Dr.MarvinJenkinsandIco-chairedthisinitiativewithfivetosevengraduateassistants.Informationwasgatheredabout
businessesandindustriesinCalhounCountyanddeliveredtoareaschoolsusingtechnologyandcreativeteachingtechniques.IlovedtheopportunitytofirstlearnaboutwhatwasgoingoninourowncommunityandthenhavingthewonderfulexperienceofgoingintoclassroomsthroughouttheCalhounCounty,Jacksonville,Oxford,andPiedmontschoolsystems.” OtherwonderfulexperiencesthatDr.FrieryrecallsincludeleadinggroupsessionsofparentinginstructionandcounselingwiththeParentProjectwhichispartoftheLIN=CofCalhounCounty.Dr.Frieryisalsoproudofherserviceasco-chairoftheAppalachianSchoolofAlcoholandDrugStudies–AnnualConferencesfrom2001-2006. “JacksonvilleStateUniversityhasbeenagreatplacetowork!Ihavebeenfortunatetohavehadacareeratsuchawonderfulinstitutionwithsomanyspecialpeople.Iwilldefinitelymissit!”saidDr.Friery. WhenDr.Frierywasaskedherplansafterretirementtheyincludedvisitingfamilyandfriends,remodelingherhouse,cooking,andalittlegardening. Dr.Frierysaid,“Spendingtimewithmygranddaughterwillbeamajorpriority.ButIalsohopetocontinuetoteachcounselingcoursesintheDepartmentofEducationalResourcesandstaycurrentwithnewtechnology.”

Dr.JordanBarkley,anativeofLimestoneCounty,joinedthefacultyatJacksonvilleStateUniversityinthefallof2005.HebeganasanassistantprofessorofsecondaryeducationafterleavinghispositionwithOpelikaCitySchoolsasaseventh-gradeEnglishandhistoryteacher.He,hiswife,Susan,andtwosons,HarrisonandJack,havemadeWeaver,AlabamatheirhomesincearrivinginCalhounCounty.Dr.BarkleyreceivedhisundergraduatedegreeinEnglishandhistoryeducationin2000.In2001,heearnedhismaster’sdegreeasareadingspecialistwithapublicschooladministrationcredential.In2005,hegraduatedfromAuburnUniversitywithhisPhDinreadingeducation.Hisemphasiswasinmiddleandsecondaryliteracyinstruction. SincejoiningthefacultyatJSU,Dr.Barkleyhastaughtcoursesinsecondaryandmiddlegradesliteracy,methodology
forsecondaryteachers,researchineducation,interventionstrategiesforreadingspecialists,andhehasalsosupervisedpracticaatboththeundergraduateandgraduatelevels.HisprimaryteachinginterestslieintheareasofliteracyinstructionandtheteachingofEnglishlanguageartsinthesecondarysetting.Hehasalsopresentedliteracyworkshopstomultipleschoolsinthesurroundingarea.Dr.Barkley’spublicationswhileemployedatJSUincludesevenscholarlyarticles,andthepublicationofhisdoctoraldissertationasatradebookin2009.Hehaspresentedatthe

local,state,regional,andnationallevels,focusingontopicsthatrangefromliteracyintheclassroomtoco-teachingandcollaboration.Inadditiontohispublicationsandpresentations,Dr.Barkleyhasalsobeenapartofastateimprovementgrantconcerningthecollaborationbetweenspecialeducationandsecondaryeducationfaculty.InDecemberof2009,heandDr.JanCase,professorofmathematics,wereawardeda$150,000ACHEgrantfortheimplementationofTIMES3,athirdinstallmentoftheTechnologicalIntegrationofMathematicalEnvironmentsStudiesprojectwhichinvolveseducationandtheartsandsciencesfaculty. Inadditiontoteachingandscholarship,Dr.BarkleyhasservedJSUasaGamecockOrientationadvisor,programchairforundergraduatesecondaryeducationprograms,amemberoftheJacksonvilleStateUniversityWritingProject,bothasponsorandcosponsorofKappaDeltaPihonorsociety,amemberandchairofvariouscollegeanduniversitycommittees,andmostrecentlyastheinterimdepartmentheadforsecondaryeducationandtheNCATEcoordinatorfortheCollegeofEducationandProfessionalStudies.

The 2009 elementary school division nominees were from the left; Ms. Stacie Wells, Valley Grande Elementary, Dallas County Schools, Ms. Sandra Sorrow, Cleveland Elementary, Blount County Schools, Ms. Darlene Machen, B.B. Comer Elementary, Talladega County Schools, Ms. Elizabeth Knight, W.E, Striplin, Gadsden City Schools, and Ms. Sabrina Lynch , Thompson Intermediate , Shelby County Schools (JSU Teacher Hall of Fame Elementary School Division Inductee 2009).
The 2009 middle school nominees were from the left; Mr. Micheal Ingram, Munford Middle, Talledega County Schools, Mr. Williams Flowers, University Place Middle, Tuscaloosa City Schools, Ms. Nancy Caffee, Cleveland High School, Blount County Schools, Ms. Dilhani Uswatte, Berry Middle , Hoover City Schools (JSU Teacher Hall of Fame Middle School Division Inductee 2009), and Ms. Pam Smith, Pleasant Valley, Calhoun County Schools.
The 2009 secondary school nominees were from the left; Ms. Victoria Skelly, Fairview High School, Cullman County Schools, Ms. Elizabeth Williams, Southside High School Dallas County Schools, Ms. Kina Teaford , Ohatchee High School, Calhoun County (JSU Teacher Hall of Fame Secondary School Division Inductee 2009), Ms. Wanda Mount, Bibb County Career Academy, Bibb County Schools, Mr. David Truhett, Central High School, Tuscaloosa City Schools.
TheJacksonvilleStateUniversityTeacherHallofFameawardsbanquetwasheldonMay22,2009tohonorthefifteennomineesandthreeinducteesforthe41stAnnualTeacherHallofFame.TheJacksonvilleStateUniversityTeacherHallofFamewasfoundedin1969bythenuniversitypresident,Dr.
HoustonCole.Dr.Colebelievedinhonoringthosewhonotonlyteach,butalsoexemplifytheprofession.JacksonvilleStateUniversityandDr.WilliamA.Meehan,JSUPresident,areproudtocarryonthislegacy. IntheElementaryDivision,Ms.SabrinaLynchofThompson
IntermediateSchoolwasinducted.IntheMiddleSchoolDivision,Ms.DilhaniUswatte,ofBerryMiddleSchoolwasinducted.IntheSecondaryDivision,Ms.KinaTeafordofOhatcheeHighSchoolwasinducted.EachoftheinducteeswillbehonoredbyhavingtheirnamesinscribedonaplaquelocatedinHoustonColeLibrary.

Ms.DanaHensonWebbearnedaBachelorofScienceinPhysicalandHealthEducationwithacertificationinAdaptivePhysicalEducation,aMastersofScienceinPhysicalEducationandEducationalAdministration,andanEducationalSpecialistDegreeinAdministrationfromJacksonvilleStateUniversity.ShehasbeenemployedasaphysicaleducationteacherintheOxfordCitySchoolsystematOxfordHighSchoolfor18years.Ms.Webbalsocoachesvarsitysoftball,volleyball,crosscountry,andcheerleading.Shecoachedthe20006AStatechampionshipcheerteam,ateamthatalsoplaced1strunner-upinthenationalcheercompetitioninthatsameyear. Ms.Webbbecameacoachofthe1991SpecialOlympicAthletes.Shewasthesite-basedSpecialOlympicCoordinatorforthe2007CleburneandCalhounCountiesmeet.Sheadvisestwoservice-basedorganizations:KeyClubandGancel.Ms.WebbalsoservesasJSUadjunctfaculty,advisory
In1987,hemovedtothenewAnnistonMiddleSchoolandbecametheinterimheadfootballcoach(laterhebecametheassistantcoach)andtheheadbasketballcoachatAnnistonHighSchool.Mr.HowardservedasheadbasketballcoachatAHSuntil1997.From1987-1997,AHS’sbasketballteamboasteda198-44record.TheteamwoneightareachampionshipsandfiveCalhounCountyBasketballTournaments. Mr.HowardwasnamedCalhounCounty CoachoftheYearthreetimes.Asanassistantfootballcoach,histeamwonthe6AStateChampionshipin1989and1994.In1997,hetransferredfulltimetoAHSandtaughtphysicaleducationandAlabamahistory.Oneofthehighlightsofhisteachingcareer
wasin1994whenhewasnominatedfromAnnistonSchoolSystemsasNationalTeacheroftheYear. In1999,Mr.HowardacceptedajobatAlexandriaHighSchoolasaphysicaleducationteacherandcoach.Hecurrentlyservesastheassistantfootballcoach,7thand8thgradebasketballcoach,andtheboysandgirlsgolfcoach.TheAlexandriaHighSchoolgirl’sgolfteamispresentlythe1A-5AStateChampion.

TheCalhounCountyHispanicAmericanAssociation(CCHAA)hosteditsannualHealthEducation&WellnessFairattheJacksonvilleFirstUnitedMethodistChurchonOctober10,2009. Dr.JeffreyHedrickoftheJSUCommunicationDepartmenthelpedcoordinatethefestivities.StudentnursesfromtheJSUSchoolofNursingprovidedfreehealthscreenings,includingbloodpressureanddiabetes
testing,whilelocaldoctorsofferedfreedentalexams.Ms.GinaMabrey,directoroftheJSUWellnessCenter,broughtthreegroupsofstudentstogivepresentationsandprovidebonedensityscanningtoattendees.Attendeeswereinvitedtopartakeofrefreshmentsprovided,includinganoutdoorbarbecueofhamburgerandhotdogs,alongwithavarietyofbeveragesandsnacks.
Translationservices,alongwithavarietyoffreeliteratureandcomplimentaryitems,suchasfreetoothbrushes,toothpaste,andalarmsystems,wereavailablefromorganizationssuchastheAmericanRedCross,theSarrellDentalCenter,theAlabamaDepartmentofHealthinCalhounCounty,theRegionalMedicalCenter,andtheCalhounEmergencyManagementAgency.

RamonaWoodHallhasservedtheCollegeofEducationandProfessionalStudieswell.Timeshavechangedandtheneedsofprogramshousedinthefacilityhavealsochanged.Tomeetcurrentneedsandtolooktowardanenvironmentdesignedtomeetfutureneedsofprograms,instructorsandstudents.TheCenterforAdvancedEducationalInstructionisbeingdevelopedfromthegroundup. TheCenterforAdvancedEducationalInstructionandTechnologyCommitteemetlastyear.Dr.MarshaZenanko,chair,Dr.JohnHammett,DeanoftheCollegeofEducationandProfessionalStudies,andthecommitteeworkedtogatherinputfromthefacultyandstaffofallthedepartmentsintheRamonaWoodHall. Theplannedstructureandrenovationwillincludetheprinciplesofuniversaldesignandgreentechnologyasusedinarchitecture. Thecurrentdesignconceptdrawsoncurrentresearchaboutlearningtorespondtoindividuallearnerdifferences.TheCenterforAdvancedEducationalInstructionclassroomsareconceivedtobeflexible.Thedesignalsoincreasestheavailabilityofamultitudeofavailableresourcesforallstudents. TheCenterforAdvancedEducationalInstructionwill:
• Providetechnologytoallowinstructorstopresentinformationinmultipleformatsandmedia
• Provideenvironmentsforstudentstodemonstrateknowledgeofmaterial
• Provideresourcestoengagestudents’interestandmotivation
Thecommitteewillworkwiththearchitecturalfirmtoincorporateintothedesigncurrentalternativeenergyresourcestoreducegreenhouse-gasemissionsinthebuiltenvironment,toleadintheadoptionofrenewableenergytechnologies,andtodevelopadaptivestrategiesforthefuture.ThebuildingwillcreateopportunitiesforthecollegetostrengthencommunityimpactofJSU,
demonstrateinnovation,andadvanceenvironmentalconservationincreatingbuildings. Ms.AndreaMacArgel,coordinatoroftheTeaching/LearningCenter,saidtheCenterforAdvancedEducationalInstructionwillprovidethetutoringprogramattheTeaching/LearningCenter(T/LC)muchneededspace.Currently,thepresenttutoringroomcanonlyaccommodateapproximatelytenstudent-tutorpairs,whentypicallythereareatleasttwenty-fivepairsperday.Insteadofspreadingthestudentsandtutorsacrossthebuilding,theycannowbekepttogether,makingtheT/LCsaferandmoreefficient.Additionally,thenewbuildingwilloffertransparentprivaterooms,sotutoringsessionsarenotdisturbedbyothersessionsinprogress.Studentsandtutorswillalso
haveaccesstolaptopsandwirelessInternettoenhancetheirtutoringexperiencewithouthavingtorelocatetootherrooms. Dr.TeresaGardner,AssistantProfessorofSpecialEducation,saysthatthecollaborativeprogramislookingforwardtoanearlychildhoodorelementarydesignclassroomandasecondaryoradultdesignclassroom.Someoftheusesfortheseclassroomswouldbeasensorystimulationroomintendedtomodelinstructionforstudentswithautism,anadvocacyandparenttrainingcenter,anassessmentlibrary,andanassistivetechnologydemonstrationsite. TheDepartmentofSecondaryEducationhasdesignedsubjectspecificclassrooms(science,math,Englishlanguagearts,socialscience)forthe21stcentury.Astate-of-the-artsciencelabwillfeatureadvancedtechnologyandenvironmentallyconservativegreenbuildingfeatures.Allsecondaryclassroomswillbefurnishedwithadvancedtechnology/computersaccessibletoallstudents.SubjectspecificclassroomswillmodelthemostcurrentandeffectiveinstructionalmaterialsandresourcesavailableforJSUpre-servicesecondaryteachers.Insum,theseclassroomswillserveasworkingmodelsforbestinstructionalpracticesinsecondaryeducation. Dr.WilliamKiser,AssistantProfessorofInstructionalLeadershiphadstudentstakethefaculty’swishlistforthecomplexandcreateabuildingdesign.Thestudents’culminatingprojectwasformallypresentedinavisualpresentationtoDr.Hammett,VicePresidentforAcademicandStudentAffairs,Dr.BeckyTurner,andcommitteemembers. Dr.Hammett’sgoalisthatthenewbuildingreflectscollectivefacultyinputintermsofcurriculumneedsthatwillbeservedthroughthebuildingdesign.Mr.PhilDean,DepartmentofTechnology,iscreatinga3-Dfirstdraftmodelbasedonthefaculty,staff,andstudentwork.Thisflexiblemodelwillallowabasisforongoingdevelopment.

ThefirstprofessionaldevelopmentexperiencewastheEconomicsExtravaganza,atwodayconference,heldinBirminghamduringJune.StevenRapp,TerryGriffin,andWandaMcAbeefromACEEworkeddiligentlyinsecuringsponsorsforsixJSUstudentstoattend.Thestudentswereprovidedhousing,food,conferenceregistration,andaneveningofentertainment.Theywereabletoparticipateinvariouseconomicseducationworkshops.LaBrandaLingerfelt,StaceyHolcolm,DondeanaHayes,EricaBlack,ShicarraSmith,andAlyssaLoweryfromtheelementaryeducationprogramleftwithgreatstrategiesforimplementingeconomicseducation,valuableresources,andabetterunderstandingofprofessionaldevelopmentopportunitiesavailableforteachers. Thesecondprofessionaldevelopmentexperiencewasaneconomicsworkshop,“Seas,Trees,andEconomies,”sponsoredbyDr.McCartyandconductedbyDr.StaubshereatJSUinJuly.Dr.McCartyhasworkedwithandforeducatorsinsupplyingvaluableresourcesforimplementingeconomicseducationintotheclassroomatalllevels.Thestudentswereabletoenjoyhands-onactivities,learngreatstrategies,getdoorprizes,andgohomewithafreecurriculumguide.
Ms.LaurenDaviswasawardedTheNewTeacheroftheYearawardbyUnionElementarySchool,PauldingCounty,GeorgiaonMarch27,2009. Inaletterwrittentonominateher,Ms.StephanieLeathersstated,“Ms.Davischallengesherstudentstodotheverybestoftheirability.Shehasmadeamemorablemarkonseveralyoungmindsinherfirstyearofteaching.Sheisdedicatedtoeachstudentonanindividuallevel.” Ms.MarshaDavis,Lauren’smothersays,“WearethankfulfortheEducationalStaffatJacksonvilleStateUniversity.Dr.ElizabethEngleyhadadirectimpactonhersuccess.Laurenstatesthatshefeelsshewaspreparedtomeetthechallengesofafirstyearteacherbecauseoftheeducationshereceived.”

scienceexplorationsinvolvingtrees,leaves,andseasons.Theexplorationswerealsointegratedintoart,music,anddrama. ThecollaborativeeventwasorganizedbyMs.LynnNewell,akindergartenteacher,andMs.Taylor,
whoworkedcloselygettingmaterialstogether,selectingspecificexplorations,andthenfine-tuningtheeventlogistics.JSUstudentsandkindergartnersalikewereexcitedabouttheoutcomeoftheevent,butfordifferentreasons.JSUstudentsreceivedfirst-handexperienceplanningandteachinghands-on,inquirybasedscienceexplorations,puttingtopracticeskillslearnedintheclassroomwhilekindergartnershadfunwith
treesandtreepartsastheylearnedbasicconceptssurroundingthetreecontentmaterial.

Thegoalsofthecamparetopreparehighschoolstudentstoserveastutorsin21stCenturytutoringcentersthroughoutAlabama;tostrengthenstudents’academicengagement,specificallyinmathandscience;to

Technology and Applied Engineering FromJune16-20,2009fifteenhighschoolstudentsparticipatedinJSU’sfirstTechnologySummerInstitute.Youngmenandwomenfromhighschoolswithinaseventy-mileradiusofJSUhadtheopportunitytolearnaboutcareersinscience,technology,andengineeringrelatedfields.Mr.PhilDean,pro-ratainstructorintheDepartmentofTechnologyandEngineering,wastheprogram’scoordinator. Participantsintheprogramwereeitherrecenthighschoolgraduatesorrisingseniors.ThefifteenparticipantsvisitedHondaManufacturingofAlabamainLincolnandParkerHannifininJacksonvilletolearnmoreabouttheselocalmanufacturers.FacultymembersfromtheDepartmentofTechnologyandEngineeringgaveabriefpresentationtothestudentsabouthisorhersubjectarea.Theparticipantslearnedthroughanumberofhands-onactivitiesaboutdifferentengineeringandtechnologyconceptssuchasbasicprogramming,computer-aideddesign(CAD),andintroductoryrobotics. TheprogramwassponsoredbyHondaManufacturingofAlabamaandParkerHannifin.
Oneoftheinterestingthingsaboutofferinganonlinedegreeishavingaclassrosterwithstudentsfromavarietyoflocations,workinginmanyinterestingfields.Currently,ChristopherLangleyisthestudentwhoresidesthefarthestfromJacksonvilleintheManufacturingSystemsTechnologygraduateprogram.LivingandworkinginSanDiego,California,Mr.LangleyisaproductsupportengineerforIllumina,abiotechnologycompanythatcreatesproductsandtoolsforDNAsequencingandanalysis. TheBreastCancer3-Day,isheldinfifteencitiesacrosstheUnitedStates.Thisyeartheeventdrew2,200walkersandraised$5.6million.Eachparticipanthadtoraiseatleast$2,300. “Atlantahasalwaysbeenoneofourmostsupportiveevents,andwewerereallypleasedwithwhatourparticipantsdidthisweekend,”saidMs.JenneFromm,nationalspokeswomanfortheAtlantaBreastCancer3-Day.“Itjustshowshowpassionatetheyare.” The2009AtlantaBreastCancer3-DaybeganwithaninspiringOpening

In2009,JSUTVServiceswontwoTellyAwards.ThesearethefifthandsixthTellywinsforTVServices.TheTellysareoneofthemostprestigiousawardsinadvertisingandvideoandfilmproduction. TheTVServicesproductionofJSU TodayreceivedaTellyfortheepisodethatfeaturedJSUemployeeMs.ConnieThompson.ThestorytoldofMs.Thompson’sdonationofakidneytoaHeflinmanshedidnotknowatthetimeandthechangesinbothoftheirlives. ThesecondTellywasforapublicaffairsprogram“TheNightIDied”editedbyformerTVServicesstudentworkerLenJackson.WhileMr.JacksongraduatedinMay,hisworkwilltakeanhonoredplaceinhisportfolio.“TheNightIDied”wasaprojectproducedforStudentsAgainstDestructiveDecisions(SADD).Itwasenteredinthestudent
categoryoftheTellyAwards.Mr.Jacksonisnowworkingfull-timeforTV24. ThestaffofTVServicesconsistsofateamofhighlyqualifiedpeople.Thedirector,Mr.MikeHathcock,hasworkedinthebroadcastindustrysince1975andhasworkedatJSUsince1987.Heactsastheengineerfortheuniversityandhisradiovoiceisusedforuniversitysoundbites.ItishisvoiceheardonmanyJSUpromotionalvideosandcommercials,ontheuniversity’stelephoneregistrationsystem,onon-lineregistration,andontheHumanResources“newemployee”orientationmultimediaprogram.HeservesastheannouncerforCommencementceremonieswherehecallseverygraduatingstudent’snametoreceivetheirdiploma.“FromthestartoffootballinSeptemberuntilbasketballseasonendsinMarchorApril,Iusuallyworksevendaysaweek
onJSUproductions,”hesaid.AccordingtoMr.Hathcock,mostpeopledonotrealizehowmuchworkisinvolvedinaliveTVbroadcast.Hesaysthatittakessixtoeighthourstosetupalltheequipmentandthenanothertwohoursaftertheeventtostrike,whichresultsinmany12to14hourdays.Inhissparetime,Mr.Hathcockworksasafreelanceengineerontelevisionproductiontrucks.

Mr.KeithThomasbeganatJSUin1989andsincethenhasdirectedandproducednumerousawardwinningvideos.AstheProductionCoordinator,hemanagesallareasofproductionincludingproducing,directing,scripting,lighting,editingandshooting.Healsosupervisestheproductionstaff,interns,andstudentworkers.Mr.Thomas
directslivebroadcastsofJSU’sgraduationceremoniesfortelevisionandtheinternetaswellasservingasTechnicalDirectorforJSUSportsbroadcast.

Mr.TedWhiteisofficiallytheTVServicesassistantengineer,butservesthedepartmentinmanycapacities.Hewashiredin2002,andbroughtwithhimovertwelveyearsofbroadcastproductionexperiencewithHarvestMediaalongwithabackgroundinindustrialelectronics,computerrepair,andnetworking.Mr.WhitedoesmostoftherepairofelectronicequipmentusedbyTelevisionServices.Mr.Whitealsodoeseverythingassociatedwithlivevideostreamingofgraduationservices.OnthetelevisionproductiontruckduringagraduationbroadcastheistheEngineerInChargeandwithsomuchcomputerequipmentpiledintohissmallspacehecanbarelymove.Mr.Whitedoesthelivestreamingofagraduationandthenupdatesthegraduationfilesforarchivalpurposes.Mr.Whitealso

Nationally Accredited Department of Communication
TheDepartmentofCommunicationisproudofitssuccessinsecuringinitialaccreditationbytheAccreditingCouncilonEducationinJournalismandMassCommunications(ACEJMC).Notonlydidthedepartmentmeettheaccreditationrequirements,itdidsoonitsfirstattempt.TheDepartmentofCommunicationwasfoundtohaveallaccreditingstandardsincompliance.Therewereonlyfiveschools—outofthetwenty-onethatwereevaluatedforaccreditationorre-accreditationin2007-2008academicyear—thatachieved100%compliance. TheDepartmentofCommunicationwantsourstudents,theirparents,andouralumnitoknowthattheyhaveagoodreasonto,respectively,chooseJSUasaplacetoobtaintheircommunicationtraining,tosendtheirchildren,andtobeproudofhavingJSUastheiralmamater. ItisimportanttonotethatJSUisoneofonlythreeuniversitiesinthestatetoholdfullACEJMCaccreditation.Forstudents,thismeansacommunicationdegreefromJSUmeetsthesamestandardsasprogramsatTheUniversityofAlabamaandAuburnUniversity. AstudentcompletingthecommunicationdegreeatJSUcanworkinmanydiversefields.JSU’scommunicationalumniarecurrentlyworkinginradio,television,magazineandotherprintmedia,public
relations,andseveralotherareasofcommunication.StudentsareawarethattheInternethasaffectedcommunicationbybeingbothanewmediumforcommunicationmajorsandakillerofsomeolderformsofmedia.Thedepartmenthasbeenrevisingitscurriculumandpracticestomeetthisevolvingcommunicationrevolution. TheDepartmentofCommunicationhasadiverse,experiencedfaculty.Dr.Harborbelievesthatthedepartmentwassosuccessfulbecauseofacombinationoffactors,oneofwhichwasacohesivefacultyandstaffunit. canusetheproperty’snetincometoprovidescholarshipsforJSUstudents.ForFCStherestaurantwillbeasiteforpracticuminternships. JSUFamilyandConsumerSciencesstudentswillhavetheopportunitytoworkatTheVictoriarestauranttoearnschoolcreditandlearnreal-worldlessons. AsDr.DebraGoodwin,departmentheadofFamilyandConsumerSciencessays,“StudentswilllearntheprinciplesandtheoryatJSUthenapplytheirlearningatthispremierrestaurant.” TheHospitalityandCulinaryManagementConcentration(HCM)intheDepartmentofFamilyandConsumerSciencescurriculumwasrevampedtoofferacademicbackgroundandfieldexperienceinthehospitalityindustry.Thecurriculumisplannedforindividualsinterestedinmanagementpositionsintheculinaryarts.Thiscurriculumisdesignedtoassiststudentsinapplyingclassroomlearningoftheculinaryarts,tourismindustry,andhospitalityproduction-operationsmanagementtorealworldexperiences.Duringthesenioryear,culinarystudentscompleteinternshipsinwhichtheyworkwithprofessionalswithintheindustrytodevelopagreaterunderstandingandappreciationofthehospitalityprofession.TheDepartmentofFamilyandConsumerSciencesalsooffersaminorinHospitalityandCulinaryManagement.BothprogramswillbenefitfromusingTheVictoria’srestaurantaslearninglab. TheJSUCampusWellnessCenterandJacksonvilleStateUniversity’sadministrationsponsoredtheNationalEmployeeHealth&FitnessDayforthesecondconsecutiveyear.Thisdayisanefforttoincreaseawarenessofthebenefitsofhealthyeatingandregularexercise.NationalEmployeeHealth&FitnessDayincludedparticipationfromlocalvendorssuchasBodyKneadsMassage,YMCA,CountyExtensionAgency,andCurvesforWomen.Thesesponsorsofferedcouponsandinformationonhealthandfitness. TheCampusWellnessCenterhasanewGELunarDXA(dualenergyX-rayabsorptiometer)tomeasurebonemineraldensity(BMD).TheLunarDXA’sfindingsmaybeusedbytheparticipantasameansofidentifyingosteoporosis.TheWellnessCenterbegantakingappointmentsforBMDtestingonOctober1.
TheWellnessCenteralsooffersPolarTri-FitBodyAgetests.Thesefitnesstestsevaluateavarietyofphysicalcomponentsincludingcardiovascularendurance,muscularstrength,flexibilityandbodycomposition.Healthriskappraisalsarealsoapartoftheexamtoevaluateriskofcancer,heartdisease,diabetes,stresslevelsandotherchronicormetabolicdiseases.Onceanexamiscompleted,theparticipantwillbegivenaphysiologicalagebasedontheresultsofthetests.Itisausefulmotivatorforparticipantswhodiscovertheirchronologicalageislessthantheirbodyage. TheWellnessWednesdaylunchpresentations,acollaborationbetweenExerciseScience&WellnessandFamily&ConsumerSciences,startedinSeptember.WellnessWednesdayprovidesanopportunitytopurchaseanutritionallunchandlistentoashortpresentationonawellnesstopic. TheAlabamaDepartmentofPublicHealthawardedaBalancingIntakeandExpenditure(BITE)granttoJSUWellness-Anniston.Toreceivethegrant,JSUWellness-Annistonhadtodemonstratesuccessfulpartnershipstoeffectivelyplanandimplementphysicalactivityandnutritionprojectsthatpotentiallycanreducecommunityrisksforobesity. Asaresultofbeingselectedforthiscompetitivegrant,JSUWellness-Anniston’sDirector,Mr.FredJ.SmithwillrepresentJSUWellness-AnnistonontheStateofAlabama’sObesityTaskForce. JSUWellness-Anniston,inconjunctionwithJSUNursing,providedwellnessscreeningstotheadultpublicandnutritioninformationtothechildrenatAnniston’sZinnParkFarmers’Market.JSUWellness-AnnistonhostedthefirstY.E.E.S.eventonJuly22,2009.Thiseventisproducedinpartnershipwithlocalcommunitycenters,volunteers,and
commendationfromGovernorBobRiley’sofficeforthegreatcollectiveaccomplishmentofthewalkingteams.ThepresentationwasmadebyRepresentativeRandyWood. Ms.MiriamGaines,NutritionandPhysicalActivityDirectorattheAlabamaDepartmentofPublicHealth,attendedthewalkrepresentingtheBITEgrantprogram. OnNovember5,2009,JSUWellness-AnnistonhostedthefirstannualBoystoMenprogram.ThisinitiativeofJSUWellness-Annistonseekstoprovidepositivementoringtoyoungmenbyprovidingrolemodelsandaforumfordiscussionofsuccessfulliving.ThefivepillarsoftheBoystoMenprogramareleadership,citizenship,character,education,andfaith. Atthebeginningoftheprogram,JSUWellness-AnnistonwasawardedaproclamationfromtheCalhounCountyCommissioninrecognitionofitspositiveimpactandvaluableservicestoCalhounCountyandthesurroundingcommunity.TheproclamationwasdeliveredbyCommissionerRudyAbbot. Dr.DebraWeingarthisanassistantrofessorofelementaryeducationintheDepartmentofCurriculumandInstruction.“Ihaveapassiontopassontheexperienceandknowledgeofaneducator,whohasbeenintheprofessionsince1975,”saidDr.Weingarth. Dr.Weingarthhasawiderangeofexperiencehavingtaughtchildrenpre-schoolthroughsixthgradeinpublic,privateandparochialschools.Shehastaughtininnercityandsuburban,Chicago,Detroit,andSt.Louis.HerexperienceincludesteachingadultsthroughthestatedepartmentinMissouriandteachingattheUniversityofMissouri,whereshespecializedinliteracystudies. Dr.Weingarthexpressedherfeelingthatteachersneedtoworktogethertoliftuptheprofessionofteaching.Shesaidthatthroughpurposefulcollaboration,andrelyingonbestpracticeresearchallteacherscanhavesuccessintheclassroom. “Allteachersmustalsobelifelonglearners,”saidDr.Weingarth. Dr.JudyHaleMcCrary,professorofelementaryeducationandDr.RitaBoydston,associateprofessorofelementaryeducationretiredinMayof2009 Dr.McCraryreceivedherBachelorofArtsdegreefromDavidLipscombUniversityinNashville,Tennessee,herMasterofEducationfromAlabamaA&MUniversity,andherDoctorofPhilosophyfromMississippiStateUniversity.ShewasbornOctober16inTuscaloosawhereshelivedbeforemovingtoFlorencewhenherfathertookajobwiththeTennesseeValleyAuthority.ItseemedthatTVAwasnotveryfamilyorientedastheykepthimontheroadallthetime.So,afterthreeyearstheHalefamilymovedtoScottsborowhereherfatherestablishedanelectricalrepairbusiness.RootsgrewquicklyandScottsboroisstillherhometoday. TheyearbeforegraduatingfromMississippiState,Dr.McCrarybeganherjobhuntforanelementaryeducationpositioninhighereducation.Atthattime,thereweregoodandinterestingpositionsalloverthesoutheast.Interviewswereinabundancefollowedbyjoboffers.Findingtherightfitwastoppriority.Shechosetowaitfortheperfectfit.JacksonvilleState
UniversityprovedtobethatperfectfitforherandtheUniversityaswell. WhenaskedtotellabouthertimeatJSU,Dr.McCraryhadsomethingstoshare.“Ithasalwaysbeensuchajoytoworkwiththefacultyandstaffhere.Everyoneisfriendly,caring,andhardworking.BythetimeundergraduatesreachtheCollegeofEducationandProfessionalStudies,theyareextremelyfocused.Theyseethemselvesasteachersandaresearchingforthemethodsthatwillhelpthembethebestteacherspossible.ThelastseveralyearsIhaveworkedsolelywiththeEdSprogram.Ihavealwaysloveddoingactionresearch,especiallywithyoungchildren.Thisprogramofferedmetheopportunitytosharethatlovewithgraduatestudentsastheycompletedtheircapstoneprojects,anactionresearchproject.” Justlikeeveryoneelse,shetoohasbigretirementplans.Mainlysheplanstodothethingsthatshewasneverabletodowhileworking.ThingslikeattendingTuesdaymorningladiesBibleclass,keepingaspotlesshouse,andgardeningfromsunuptosundown.Althoughhergardenwillbenefitfromhavinghershewillbegreatlymissedhere.Dr.Boydston,theyoungestoftenchildren,isoneofJSU’sown,graduatingfromJSUwithherBSdegreeinElementaryEducationin1977.Shecontinuedhereducationhere,completingherMAdegreeinEarlyChildhoodEducationin1980andherEdSdegreein1984.ShethenattendedUABtocompleteherPhDin1994. PriortojoiningthefacultyatJSU,shetaughtkindergartenfortenyearsandsecondgradeforsixyearsatKittyStoneElementarySchool.ShebeganadjunctteachingattheGadsdencampusin1980andtaughtatWesleyanCollegeforoneyearandatBerryCollegefortwoyears. In1997,shecametoJSUasafulltimefacultymemberinElementaryEducationasanassistantprofessor.In2002,sheearnedassociateprofessorandwastenured. Whenaskedwhatmadeherdecide
toworkinhighereducation,shehadseveralamusinganecdotesmostofuscanrelatetoconcerningthemind-setofanearlychildhoodteacher.Forexample,shediscoveredonedaythatwhenshehadguestsinherhome,shewouldonlyfilltheirjuiceglasseshalffullandmadethemfinishitoffbeforeshegavethemmore.Butwhatreallydecideditforherwasonedayasshesatinanairportwaitingforaplane,shereachedoverandtiedastranger’sshoeforhim. Dr.Boydstonislookingforwardtoretirementwhereshecanspendtimewithhertwosons,JohnandJacob,andhertwograndchildren,Kaleb,sixteenmonths,andKolbi,fourmonths,whereshewillonceagainhappilyregresstogivinghalfglassesofjuiceandtyingshoesspontaneously.
