Text 2 Hi Hessa, How are you? I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to write. So far, I’m not having a very good holiday. Let me tell you why. The problems started at the airport when our plane was delayed because of the fog in Dubai. We finally got here two hours late after a very uncomfortable trip. I’m sure those plane seats get smaller each year. Then, because of a double-booking, we didn’t get the sea-view room that we thought we’d reserved, and instead we have a tiny room overlooking the street, and this is one street that never sleeps! So, after eight days here, I am exhausted. I really need to sleep for more than three hours at a time… and I need a good meal. It’s very hard finding food that I want to eat here. It’s not like our cooking at home, which I’m missing so much. At night I dream of biryani and fresh juices! Still, only three more days to go, and there is one thing I’m excited about. Tomorrow we are going to drive up into the mountains. I mustn’t forget to pack my camera as the views are supposed to be fantastic and it hasn’t had much use so far in this boring city. I’d better go now. Even the internet cafes are expensive here. I can’t wait to see you again. - Sara 98. What problem did Sara have with the hotel? A) The food was bad and the bed was uncomfortable. B) She didn’t get the view she wanted and the food was bad. C) The restaurant was closed and the room was noisy. D) The room was noisy and she didn’t get the view she wanted. 99. How long has Sara been on holiday? A) two hours B) one day C) three days D) eight days 100. What does the word exhausted (paragraph 2, line 5) mean? A) always sleeping B) very tired C) unhappy D) too hard 101. What does Sara say is different from her own country? A) the hotels B) the streets C) the mountains D) the food

Text 3 It was early afternoon when we heard a noise outside our hut. Suddenly, our translator Jomo Gabon burst in through the door shouting “Mokele-mbembe, mokele-mbembe”. I grabbed my camera and rushed outside. About 100 metres in front of me, I saw it. Standing at the edge of the lake was a mokele-mbembe or ‘blocker-of-rivers’. The colossal creature was the size of a large hippopotamus or small young elephant and had a short fat body with a long neck. As I watched, it stretched its neck up to the branches of the trees that hung over the lake and bit off leaves to eat. As I slowly raised my camera, it saw me and before I could take a picture, quickly sank below the surface of the lake. I did not realize it at the time, but that was to be my one and only sighting. I had traveled to the Likouala region in the northern part of the Republic of the Congo in search of this elusive creature. This politically unstable, inhospitable and almost unexplored part of Africa is its home. For over 100 years, the local people have been drawing pictures and giving detailed descriptions of it. From these, it is clear that the mokele-mbembe is probably an Apatosaurus. The only problem is that the Apatosaurus is a type of dinosaur, and, as we all know, dinosaurs have been extinct for over 65 million years. However, on a memorable afternoon in a small Likouala village in a remote part of the Congo, I had seen one for myself, alive and well. It seems that not all dinosaurs are extinct. Of course, I am not the only person apart from local fisherman to have come face to face with this living dinosaur. The first recorded sighting by a Western scientist was made by a British zoologist called Ivan Sanderson in 1932. Other sightings include that by an American engineer named Herman Regusters in 1981 and by an expedition group from California in 1983. Marcellin Agnagna, a Congolese biologist and member of the Californian group, even managed to take a photograph. Unfortunately, the pictures were not clear. A few years later, in 1988, a Japanese expedition managed to film one of these creatures for 15 seconds. However, some people have claimed that their film actually shows swimming elephants. The search for proof continues. 103. Which of the following people was with the author in Likouala? A) Ivan Sanderson B) Jomo Gabon C) Herman Regusters D) Marcellin Agnagna 104. A mokele-mbembe is __________. A) short in height with a long body B) about the size of a small hippopotamus C) smaller than a full-grown elephant D) similar in appearance to a giraffe 105. What does the mokele-mbembe eat? A) animals B) plants C) fish D) insects

106. Why doesn’t the author have any photographs showing the mokele-mbembe? A) He did not want to scare the animal away. B) He did not have his camera with him. C) The pictures he took were not very clear. D) The creature disappeared too quickly. 107. What does the word colossal (paragraph 1, line 4) mean? A) very dry B) very famous C) very large D) very colorful 108. Most people believe that dinosaurs have been extinct for over __________. A) 65 years B) 100 years C) 65 million years D) 100 million years 109. People think the mokele-mbembe is an Apatosaurus because they __________. A) described that dinosaur to the local people B) knew that it lived in this part of the world C) had compared skeletons of these creatures D) saw the pictures of it that local people drew 110. Who took the first photographs of the mokele-mbembe? A) Ivan Sanderson B) Marcellin Agnagna C) Herman Regusters D) a Japanese expedition 111. Which of the following statements about the mokele-mbembe is true? A) Local people are afraid of it. B) Western scientists have never seen one. C) It is hunted by fishermen. D) It can be found in the Congo.

Text 4 The phrase ‘vampire power’, just one of the many terms for ‘phantom energy’, indicates its damaging, draining, negative effects. Phantom energy is the energy that is still used even when appliances such as TVs, computers and DVD players are not switched on. Even mobile phone chargers, when not charging, use this phantom energy. This wasted energy can add up in both amount and cost over time, and is estimated to come to as much as $80 per person per year. To stop this wastage, people need to take action; when not using an appliance, unplug it. As well as saving energy, unplugging will actually be good for many devices. Appliances can overheat if left plugged in, as their cooling fan is constantly on, and the machine can be overstressed. Some people do actually believe that it is wrong to shut down their computer when they leave the office at the end of the day. This is not the case. If you have to leave it on because of company policy, set it to go into sleep mode after 15 minutes. Soon there will be more than 1 billion computers in the world, a compelling reason for you to cut out your own use of phantom energy and turn off your computer when you go home at night. The only types of appliances to be careful about unplugging are satellite TV dishes and boxes. Some of these devices are not designed to be turned off. You may even be made to pay extra by the satellite company for shutting down the equipment, so always check first. To help yourself and the world that we live in, follow this practical tip: plug several things into one power strip. This way you only have to turn off a few switches instead of many. You’ll be saving yourself hundreds of dollars spent on phantom energy over the course of a lifetime, and will also be reducing the adverse effects we humans are having on the world we live in. 112. What causes phantom energy use? A) using too many different kinds of appliances B) leaving appliances plugged in when they are not being used C) spending too much money on buying appliances to use at home D) switching appliances on and off frequently 113. What does the word it (paragraph 2, line 5) refer to? A) the computer B) the end of the day C) the case D) the office 114. If you leave appliances plugged in for too long, they can __________. A) shut down B) go to sleep C) overstress you D) get too hot 115. According to the text, what is one difference between DVD players and satellite boxes? A) DVD players must be switched on at all times. B) DVD players are generally more expensive. C) Most satellite boxes use less energy than DVD players. D) Some satellite boxes should not be unplugged.

Which of these appliances is not mentioned in the text? A) satellite TV box B) air conditioner C) mobile phone charger D) television 119. What is the author’s purpose in writing this text? A) to criticize people for saving money B) to encourage people to use more energy C) to show people how to spend more money D) to educate people on how to save energy 120. What might the author’s opinion be regarding climate change and the environment? A) If we all work together, we can make positive changes. B) We should not try to help because it is too late. C) If we save money, then things will improve in the world. D) We must take care of and please ourselves as individuals.
