The University of Virginia

The University of Virginia

The University of Virginia was founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819 to advance human knowledge,

educate leaders and cultivate an informed citizenry. Today, UVA is a diverse global community of over

45,800 students, faculty and staff. University students represent virtually every state in the U.S., and

124 countries, and our 224,000 alumni are active in support of our mission to serve the greater good.

About the University

The University of Virginia is made up of eleven schools in Charlottesville plus the College at Wise in

Southwest Virginia. Not including the College at Wise, the University employs more than 23,000

people, including approximately 16,000 faculty and staff and approximately 7,000 Health System

employees.

For 2018, the University was ranked the No. 3 best public university by U.S. News & World Report. In

the 19 years since U.S. News began ranking public universities as a separate category, UVA has ranked

in the top three and continues to rank in the Top 30 among the best of all national universities, public

and private. The University of Virginia Health System is a renowned academic medical center

committed to providing outstanding patient care, educating tomorrow's health care leaders and

discovering new and better ways to treat disease. The University's Medical Center and its physicians

continue to be recognized for their excellence in patient care, education and research.

The University of Virginia moves into its third century with a strong financial foundation. This includes

an endowment of approximately $9.2 billion. In addition, the University's Strategic Investment Fund

provides an additional $100 million annually for research and other strategic investments.

A World Treasure

In 1987, UNESCO named the University (in conjunction with Monticello) a World Heritage Site. This

rare distinction has been bestowed upon only the world’s most culturally significant landmarks. As a

proud recipient of this honor, UVA is one of only two such sites still being used for its original purpose.

The University of Virginia

Today, the original Academical Village continues to bring Jefferson's vision to life every day. The

Rotunda—originally the University’s library—still serves as the heart of the University. The eastern and

western sides of

the Lawn retain the unique pavilions and student living quarters originally sketched by Jefferson. These

buildings continue to play a major role in the University’s community, housing our most honored

faculty and student leaders, living and learning. Total student enrollment – undergraduate 16,034,

graduate 6,771, and total on Grounds 22,805.

Research Portfolio

UVA was founded to question convention, to expand understanding and to harness the “useful

sciences” as a means to advance society. Two centuries later, as a major research institution, we

continue to uphold the ideals that made us unique among universities: our pursuit of discovery

through collaboration and cross- disciplinary exploration. With core investments in strengthening our

research capabilities, UVA is focusing research on intellectual and social challenges where it can have

the most impact. As part of this effort, the University is investing in several cross-disciplinary initiatives

that address complex challenges – including Data Science, Environmental Resilience and the Brain

Institute— that provide valuable educational and research opportunities and that generate scholarship

and research with a measurable impact. These initiatives align with societal needs and create new

knowledge that produces unanticipated technologies and innovative ideas.

Global Engagement

Since its inception, the University of Virginia has been an American institution with a uniquely global

perspective - of UVA’s eight original faculty members, five were from outside the United States. Today,

our level of engagement in the world is stronger than ever—from research initiatives designed to

address key global challenges, such as our partnership with organizations like the Max Planck Society,

to our presence in Shanghai and London where we’re working to internationalize our curriculum and

global business landscape.

Making a World-Class Education Accessible to All

Now entering its third century, the University of Virginia offers an affordable, world-class education

that is consistently ranked among the nation’s best. UVA admits talented students from across the

Commonwealth, the nation and the globe, without consideration of their financial situation. UVA is

one of two public universities that have both need-blind admission process and that meet 100 percent

of admitted students’ demonstrated need. The University offers robust student scholarship support to

attract the best and brightest deserving students form all backgrounds, while protecting against

excessive student debt.

Charlottesville, Virginia

Charlottesville, Virginia

Located in Central Virginia just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Charlottesville offers stunning beauty,

extraordinary culture and an inexhaustible list of things to do. From world-class restaurants to cultural

events like the Virginia Film Festival and Festival of the Book, to hiking and kayaking along the scenic

Rivanna River, Charlottesville offers a quality of life, community feel and natural beauty that few cites

can match. In fact, U.S. National Bureau of Economic Research named Charlottesville “the happiest city

in America” and it consistently ranks as one of the top places in the country for quality of life.

Replete with the history of three USA Presidents that hailed from nearby, Charlottesville is reminiscent

of a Tuscany of the east coast, is surrounded by vineyards, microbreweries, and estates that make it one

of the top wedding destinations in the U.S. Charlottesville has a vibrant and rapidly growing start-up and

private equity and asset management ecosystem. In 2016, Charlottesville was named the fastest-

growing venture capital city in the USA by the National Venture Capital Association.

Charlottesville is easily accessible with multiple

daily Amtrak service to Washington DC, and enjoys

its own convenient airport. The Richmond

International Airport and Washington DC Dulles

International Airport are about 60 and 90 miles

away. This juxtaposition of a bustling city and rural

life creates a rich diversity in Charlottesville and

Albemarle County. The Charlottesville MSA has a

population of about 225,000 people.

You hear it in the variety of music echoing from the John Paul Jones Arena, the Charlottesville Pavilion

or Batesville Country Store, where free concerts fill the air with salsa, bluegrass, and every genre in

Charlottesville’s Downtown Pedestrian Mall

between. Over recent years, Charlottesville has welcomed the Eagles, Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, Bruce

Springsteen, Coldplay, Elton John, Justin Timberlake, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Wonder, Taylor Swift, Pink,

Pearl Jam, Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean, and Luke Bryan, among many other headline acts. The Dave

Matthews Band is from Charlottesville.

You feel it in the incredible sports scene provided by the University. Holding national championship titles

or number one rankings in men’s basketball, soccer, baseball, tennis, lacrosse, rowing, and track and

with top ranked teams in almost all Division I sports, UVA has one of the best athletic program among

U.S.A universities, and UVA fans are passionate.

A wonderful place to raise a family, Charlottesville and Albemarle County have schools that are
