LATin AMeRiCA: PAy TV ReVenues To QuADRuPLe, As DTh TAkes oVeR As ReVenue LeADeRInforma’s new research for the Latin America region shows that pay TV generated revenues of US$6.7 billion in 2005. This total had more than doubled to US$17.3 billion by 2011 and is forecast to reach US$29.9 billion in 2017 – more than four times the 2005 total.

In the 2005-2009 period the Latin region’s pay TV subscriber total increased by a net average of 3.4 million annually – in 2010 this almost doubled to 6.7 million and again topped six million in 2011 – at 6.3 million.

This impressive level of growth is expected to be maintained over the next two to three years, as new pay TV services att ract subscriber scale. But the rate of increase will begin to decline towards the end of the forecast period – as DTT launches provide a compelling alternative to paid services.

A signifi cant milestone was passed in 1Q12, when digital DTH overtook analog cable as the region’s leading pay TV platform by subscriber total. Up from a penetration rate of just 3% of TV households in 2005, pay DTH is scheduled to end-2012 in 17% of TV homes (see Fig. 1).

Informa Telecoms & Media forecasts that pay TV subscriber numbers in Latin America will reach 81.9 million by end-2017, up 65% from 49.6 million in 2011. In 2011 cable was the clear pay TV market leader, present in 21% of households, compared to 13% for pay DTH. However, DTH is on the move and by end-2017 is expected to have overtaken cable, being the primary TV service in 26% of the region’s homes, compared to an essentially unchanged 21% for cable (see Fig. 2).
