CENTURY DREAM ON TOPIN THE CELEBRATION MILE

Robbed of Benbatl (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) due to the testing

ground at Goodwood, Saturday=s G2 Ladbrokes Celebration Mile

become a duel between another two top-level performers

Century Dream (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) and Regal Reality (GB)

(Intello {Ger}) with the former claiming the bragging rights.

Returning refreshed from a break having finished fifth in the

G1 Prix d=Ispahan at Chantilly July 19, Century Dream who was

left as the 11-4 favourite following the withdrawal of

Godolphin=s standard-setter tracked Regal Reality in second

before swooping two out and drawing clear under coaxing from

James Doyle to score by 4 1/2 lengths. Sir Busker (Ire) (Sir

Prancealot {Ire}) denied Regal Reality second by 1 3/4 lengths as

the winner proved a class apart. AThey went a good pace and he

settled really well and travelled really well into it,@ Ed Crisford

commented. AThe ground is the key to him--he gets through it

better than most.@

Abdulla Belhabb=s Century Dream came back from a wind

operation to successfully mark his seasonal return in the

G3 Diomed S. staged over this trip having been switched from

Epsom to Newbury. That was his second win in that contest,

with his 2018 triumph on the famous Downs his first in pattern

company and he rounded off that campaign with a close third in

Ascot=s G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. That is where the winner is

headed again according to Ed Crisford.

ISABELLA GILES GIVES BELARDO HIS

BREAKTHROUGH Kildangan Stud=s first-season sire Belardo (Ire) was off the

mark in black-type company on Saturday as his daughter

Isabella Giles (Ire) ran away with Goodwood=s seven-furlong

G3 Ladbrokes Prestige S. Sent off the 11-4 second favourite

following her latest fourth in the G3 Princess Margaret S. over a

furlong shorter at Ascot July 26, Paul and Clare Rooney=s bay

tracked the free-running Pomelo (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in second

from the break. Staying in the centre of the straight as that 5-4

market-leader went stand=s side, she was in front approaching

the two-furlong pole and stayed on strongly to register a

commanding seven-length success from Prado (GB) (Iffraaj

{GB}), with the solid yardstick Seattle Rock (GB) (Fastnet Rock

{Aus}) a head away in third. AClearly the progeny of Belardo

have no difficulty with the soft ground,@ trainer Clive Cox said.

AShe has got a lovely nature, we really like her and that was

great.@ Successful in a Leicester maiden June 13 and a novice at

Newbury July 8 over six furlongs, Isabella Giles looked in need of

farther when 1 1/2-lengths behind Santosha (Ire) (Coulsty {Ire})

in the Princess Margaret. Cont. p2

Century Dream takes Celebration Mile cont. from p1

AWe will go wherever the ground is soft--the [G1 Prix du]

Moulin looks very punchy this year with Pinatubo, so whether

we go there or swerve that, I don=t know,@ said Ed Crisford. AHe

has run well at Ascot before and finished fourth in the Queen

Anne and third in the QEII a couple of years ago and he likes

Ascot. He runs well there and you are pretty much going to get

soft ground. Palace Pier, winning the St James=s Palace and in

the way he won in France the other day when it was soft, he has

shown to be an exceptional three-year-old. We are an older

horse and we think we can run well, I think we can serve it up to

him, but it would be a tough one.@

William Knight said of the talented but quirky Sir Busker, who

was stepping up from handicap company, AWe all want to win so

it is slightly disappointing coming second, but at the same time

Century Dream is a good horse, especially on that sort of

ground. Going forwards, it was good to see him perform well in

that sort of company though. He is now rated 111 so that makes

life tough in any sort of handicap, so we will have to stick to

these type of races. I think we would probably drop him back

into either a listed or group three race on his next start.@

Pedigree Notes: Century Dream=s dam Salacia (Ire) (Echo of Light {GB}) is also

responsible for last year=s QEII hero King of Change (GB) (Farhh

{GB}) who was also second in the G1 2000 Guineas. The second

dam Neptune=s Bride (Bering {GB}) annexed the G3 Prix Fille de

l=Air and is in turn a daughter of the G3 Prix de Ris-Orangis

winner Wedding of the Sea (Blushing Groom {Fr}). Also

connected to the game and tough, seven-times graded stakes-

winning Hail Hilarious (Fast Hilarious) and the California Oaks

winner and GI Santa Barbara H. runner-up Countess Fager (Dr.

Fager), Salacia=s 3-year-old filly Banna (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) is as-

yet unraced, as is her 2-year-old filly Royal Event (Ire) (Golden

Horn {GB}), while her yearling filly is by Sea the Stars (Ire).

Cox added, AShe has been pleasing all the way and we were

looking forward stepping up a furlong as well. She has coped

with the ground today and I think another furlong would be well

within her compass next year. She is an exciting filly. She is a

really nice filly and I=m thrilled she has shown it on the track as

she is very laid-back at home, but clearly she knows what it=s

about when she goes racing. I would say the [G2] Rockfel [at

Newmarket] will be likely, as long as she comes back from here

well. She is thriving with racing and physically she is getting

stronger every week. I would be inclined to hope that next year

is even better.@

DEJA VU Following the example set by his half-brother Sir Ron Priestley

(GB) (Australia {GB}) 12 months ago, Subjectivist (GB) (Teofilo

{Ire}) repeated his feat in winning Goodwood=s G3 Ladbrokes

March S. on Saturday. Setting a merciless gallop in the testing

ground, the 11-10 favourite relished the stamina test and

galloped to a resounding 15-length success under Joe Fanning.

TDN Rising Star Cabaletta (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) was

second, 21 lengths ahead of Celtic Art (Fr) (Mastercraftsman

{Ire}) as the winner dragged all three rivals into the red. Cont. p4

Only seventh behind Pyledriver (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}) in

York=s G2 Great Voltigeur S. last time Aug. 19, the bay is heading

for a rematch with that rival in the Sept. 12 G1 St Leger that Sir

Ron Priestley went on to be second in last term.

AIt wasn=t the original plan to come here, as we think he needs

time between his races, but then

the wheels came off in the

Voltigeur and when this race

broke up so much, we had to

come here,@ Mark Johnston said.

AProvided he=s okay, now you

have to look to the Leger. A test of

stamina is obviously very

important.@ Third behind another

potential Doncaster rival in

Hukum (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) in

Ascot=s 12-furlong King George V

H. June 17, Subjectivist was

second in a handicap over this trip

at Haydock July 5 prior to winning Hamilton=s Listed Glasgow S.

over 11 furlongs July 16. A close third in the G3 Gordon S. here

July 30 prior to his backward step in the Voltigeur, he will take a

relentless galloping style to the final British Classic which will

stand him in fine stead as it did his half-sibling last year.

Pedigree Notes: The aforementioned Sir Ron Priestley was the second foal out

of Reckoning (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), who placed three

times at listed level and is kin to GIII My Charmer H. runner-up

Hope Cross (Ire) (Cape Cross

{Ire}). This is also the family of

the G1 Gran Criterium hero and

G1 Irish Derby runner-up

Sholokhov (Ire) and the G1 Irish

hero Soldier of Fortune (Ire) by

Teofilo=s sire Galileo (Ire), as well

as the G1 Dewhurst S. winner

Intense Focus (Giant=s Causeway)

and the G1 Moyglare Stud S.

heroine Skitter Scatter (Scat

Daddy). Reckoning=s 2-year-old

filly by Alba Rose (GB) (Muhaarar

{GB}) was runner-up at Lingfield

earlier this month for the same connections, while her yearling

filly by Ulysses (Ire) is due to sell at the Tattersalls October

who secured a first stakes score in Haydock=s G3 Rose of

Lancaster S. earlier this month, doubled his black-type tally with

victory in Saturday=s G3 Gallagher Group Winter Hill S. at

choice was stoked up for his challenge passing the quarter-mile

marker and kept on strongly underneath the far-side rail to

prevail by a length from 5-6 favourite Fox Chairman (Ire)

AI love him and I just feel really blessed at the moment to get

my leg up on these types of horses, good horses,@ said winning

rider Hollie Doyle after partnering the fourth of her five winners

on the card. AHe settled so well today taking a lead and we went

a nice, even gallop in a nice rhythm. It probably isn=t his track or

preferred ground to be honest, but he=s on the up. I just go with

him and let him take me along. I don=t complicate things. He=s

got bags of ability, he=s physically beautiful and he=d have no

trouble getting 12 furlongs if he keeps on relaxing the way he

has the last twice.@ Trainer Roger Charlton added, AI=m really

pleased for him and for Hollie, it was a great ride. It wouldn=t be

his choice of ground or his choice of track, but he did it well and

I would say it=s the best performance he=s put up. He=s not an

easy horse and he=s quite keen, but Hollie is remarkable and she

had him very settled there. I don=t know where he=ll go next as

there are no more Group 2s for him, the only Group 1 is the

Champion S. and the owner is keen to run him in the Saudi Cup

DEAUVILLE SIGNS OFF Normandy waves goodbye to the summer action on Sunday,

when the month-long festival culminates with the G2 Lucien

Barriere Grand Prix de Deauville. There are no stars on show on

the card, which also features the G3 Barriere Prix de Meautry

and G3 Barriere Prix Quincey, but the main event offers

Telecaster (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) the chance to shine after

his fourth in the July 25 G2 York S. A month prior, Castle Down

Racing=s 4-year-old had beaten subsequent G1 Prix Jean

Romanet third Romanciere (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) by four lengths in

ParisLongchamp=s G3 La Coupe also over 10 furlongs and this

step up to 12.5 furlongs could bring about more improvement.

HOLLIE DOYLE IN WINDSOR FIVE-TIMER

Hollie Doyle recorded a 899-1 five-timer at Windsor on

Saturday, in the process becoming the first female rider to win

five races on a card in the UK.

Doyle has enjoyed a landmark campaign, earning a first win at

Royal Ascot in June before taking her first group race with Dame

Malliot (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) in the G2 Princess of Wales=s

S. in July and gaining a riding contract with Imad Al Sagar. It was

for that boss that she won the card=s featured G3 Winter Hill S.

aboard Extra Elusive (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}). She also took

the other stake on the card, the Listed August S., aboard Aziz

Kheir=s Le Don De Vie (GB) (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}).

AWhen I woke up this morning I thought it could go one way or

the other. I could have a good day or a really bad day,@ Doyle

told Sky Sports Racing. AThe last few years have been awesome,

but you=ve got to keep on improving and pushing more and

more. I like riding under pressure, I feel with the better rides I

get I like it more. I love riding horses, you=ve got to to do this

job.@

Extra Elusive=s trainer Roger Charlton said, AI=m really pleased

for him and for Hollie, it was a great ride. It wouldn=t be his

choice of ground or his choice of track, but he did it well and I

would say it=s the best performance he=s put up. Hollie is

remarkable--he=s not an easy horse, he=s quite keen but she had

him very settled there. The biggest work is carrying the saddle

out for her, I think there must have been three stones of lead in

there.@

COX PLATE AIM FOR ASPETAR G2 York S. winner Aspetar (Fr) (Al Kazeem {GB}) is bound for

Australia=s G1 Cox Plate, having had to miss the G1 Juddmonte

International earlier this month.

AIf we can get him there, we=re going to run in the Cox Plate,@

Charlton told Sky Sports Racing. AHe has to do quarantine

himself for two weeks, then they [Charlton=s staff] have to go via

Sydney for two weeks before the horse arrives. Currently there

are no flights to Sydney, so there are a lot of hurdles to jump. He

would get there at the beginning of October and the race is the

middle of October.

Successful in a course-and-distance conditions event on this

ground on his final 2-year-old start in November, Brad the Brief

returned to add a handicap to his tally at Haydock June 8 before

running third back in a conditions race at the latter venue July 5

and ninth in a Chester handicap Aug. 20. Racing prominently

until losing touch with Highland Dress heading down into the

Adip@, the bay got motoring again heading back uphill and

secured the lead inside the last 75 yards before holding the

Stewards= Cup winner Summerghand.

The winner is the first foal out of Kenzadargent who took the

Listed Prix des Jouvenceaux et des Jouvencelles at two and the

Miss Liberty S. at four and was placed four times in group and

graded-stakes company including a third in the G2 Prix de

Sandringham. From the family of the GI Oaklawn H.-winning sire

Le Don de Vie, who ran fourth in 12-furlong handicaps at Ascot

and Haydock earlier this term, finished third in Goodwood=s July

31 G3 Glorious S. on stakes bow last time and stepped forward

to claim a career high in this stepping stone to a campaign Down

Under. Restrained in third behind a modest pace until tanking

into second at halfway, he loomed large going well approaching

the two pole and was driven clear in the closing stages to win in

ultimately comfortable fashion.

ALe Don De Vie is a good horse and won well,@ said winning

trainer Hughie Morrison. ASince he ran at Haydock in July, he=s

come to himself, but he=s keen enough so we don=t train him

much at home. He goes to Australia next month to join another

trainer and goes on any ground. I=ve entered him in the [G1]

Caulfield Cup and [G1] Melbourne Cup and I think he=ll probably

go straight for the former.@

Le Don de Vie, kin to the unraced 2-year-old colt Law of the

Sea (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}) and a yearling colt by Sir Percy

(GB), is the first foal out of Leaderene (GB) (Selkirk), herself a

multiple-winning half-sister to G1 Prix de l-Opera heroine Lady

Marian (Ger) (Nayef) and German Group 3 winner Lucidor (Ger)

(Zafonic). Lady Marian is the dam of G2 Grand Prix de Deauville

Colorada (Ger), who in turn produced MG1SW sire Lomitas (GB)

handicap at the Qatar Goodwood festival on July 28 with a clear-

cut course-and-distance win on Aug. 15, travelled easily in

mid-division throughout the early stages. Cruising to the front

with minimal effort approaching three out, the 11-4 second

favourite kicked clear to win by 10 lengths and wave goodbye to

handicaps. AThey went a good gallop and 4 1/2 down I was

wishing I was a bit further back as I knew I=d get there too early,

but she=s so genuine,@ jockey Ray Dawson said. AWe thought

after last time she would definitely be able to pick up a bit of

black-type, but she=s done even better there in what looked a

tougher race and relished the step up in trip. I=m sure she=ll get

two miles and while this ground slows others, it doesn=t slow her

down. She fills you with confidence and the sky=s the limit for

her.@ The last known foal out of the G2 Prix de Malleret and G3

Prix Penelope-placed Topka, the winner is a half-sister to Top

Hocquart and was second in the G2 Yorkshire Cup and third in

Laying claim to being one of the day=s most impressive

winners, Galileo Chrome continued his steep upward trajectory

on his first try at this trip. Following a 10-furlong Curragh

maiden win on June 12 with a six-length success over the same

trip at Leopardstown on July 31, the bay was reserved with two

behind early by Shane Crosse and moved with notable menace

in early straight. As most around him were beginning to struggle,

Galileo Chrome was only getting going as he took control

approaching the two-furlong marker and as soon as the whip

was applied surged clear for an emphatic success.

AShane said he=s an absolute dream, as he=s switched off over

that trip,@ Joseph O=Brien=s assistant Brendan Powell

commented. AHe said he quickened up lovely and when Gavin

came up his inside he thought he was in trouble for a minute but

he said he just had a little look around in front. I know he took it

up a long way out in Leopardstown, but he=s still a big baby. The

way he galloped away in the last half furlong made a big

difference. He=s got a massive future. He=s answered a lot of

questions today, he stays well and he has the speed to go a

mile-and-a-quarter as well. Would he be a Leger horse? That=s

completely up to Joseph and the owners. He=s going the right

direction and the world is his oyster at the minute. He=s got

everything to him, he=s got size, power and he relaxes as well.

When you=ve got all that together you=d think he=s going to be a

good horse.@

Galileo Chrome is the first runner for the dam, who also has a

yearling full-sister to the winner and a colt foal by Dream Ahead.

She is a daughter of the dual listed-placed Intrigued (GB)

a Challenge saw off arch-rival Urban Beat for a fifth listed

success and a perfect warm-up for the upcoming G1 Flying Five.

Runner-up to A=Ali (Ire) (Society Rock {Ire}) in the G2 Sapphire S.

July 19 and successful in the Listed Curragh Sprint S. over six

furlongs Aug. 22, the bay was slowly away this time but

sauntered into contention inside the final two furlongs. Headed

for a stride by Urban Beat, he quickly regained the advantage

and was comfortably on top at the line. Jockey Joe Doyle said,

AHe was as good as ever there. He got a bit upset in the stalls, he

got the blindfold off, and it resulted in him jumping a bit slow

but it made no odds in the end and I didn=t have to be too hard

on him. That was to get a blow into him for the Flying Five, so

it=s all systems go and we=re looking forward to it.@

Make a Challenge was confirming his status as one of his

country=s leading sprinters on the afternoon that his 4-year-old

half-brother Highland Dress (GB) (Shamardal) was gaining black-

type when third in the Listed Hopeful S. at Newmarket. They are

out of the unraced Crinoline (Street Cry {Ire}), a half-sister to the

G1 Phoenix S. and G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine Saoirse Abu (Mr.

Greeley) from the family of the multiple grade I-winning

champion It=s In the Air (Mr. Prospector). She is the ancestress

of the G1 Irish Derby and G1 Epsom Oaks heroine Balanchine

(Storm Bird), the G1 Prix de Diane winner West Wind (GB)

(Machiavellian) and the dual G1 Dubai World Cup hero Thunder

Snow (Ire) (Helmet {Aus}). Crinoline=s 3-year-old filly Pivotal

Decision (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) has yet to race.

APRIL SHOWERS (IRE) (f, 2, Galileo {Ire}--Butterfly Cove, by

Storm Cat), who was second and ahead of Friday=s G3 Flame of

Tara S. one-two Divinely (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and

Ahandfulofsummers (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in a mile maiden at Cork

on Aug. 8, headed the field initially before being granted a lead.

Back in front approaching the two pole, the 2-1 favourite was

made to battle by Sense of Style (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) but toughed

it out to score by 1 1/2 lengths. Ballydoyle=s newcomer

Madonna (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the full-sister to the G1 Moyglare

Stud S. winner Maybe (Ire) and the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac

runner-up Promise To Be True (Ire), put in a highly encouraging

debut effort in what could prove a strong maiden, staying on

well to be a further 2 1/2 lengths behind in third. Winning jockey

Gavin Ryan said, AShe=s a lovely filly. She had a nice run in Cork

the last day when she got going a bit late. We like her a lot at

home and knew she=d go on the ground here today. I made

plenty of use of her, as she=s a good galloping filly and she=ll

make a lovely 3-year-old next year over a mile-and-a-half.@ The

winner is Coolmore royalty, being a full-sister to the high-class

four-times Group 1-winning Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Misty

For Me (Ire), Hwt. 2yo Filly-Ire, Hwt. 3yo-Ire at 9 1/2-11f, Hwt.

2yo Filly-Fr, MG1SW-Ire, G1SW-Fr & GISP-US, $1,124,364, to the

G1 Prix Marcel Boussac winner and G1 1000 Guineas-placed

Ballydoyle (Ire), Hwt. 2yo Filly-Fr, G1SW-Fr, GSW & G1SP-Ire,

G1SP-Eng, $538,223, and to the Listed Hurry Harriet S. scorer

and G3 Musidora S. runner-up Twirl (Ire), SW & GSP-Ire,

GSP-Eng, SP-US, $132,754. Misty For Me is now the dam of

three group winners, headed by the triple Group 1-winning July

Cup hero U.S. Navy Flag (War Front) and his equally talented

full-sister Roly Poly. The unraced Butterfly Cove is a full-sister to

the G3 1000 Guineas Trial S. winner Kamarinskaya and a half to

the G1 Phoenix S. and G1 Prix Morny-winning sire Fasliyev

(Nureyev). Butterfly Cove=s yearling is a filly by Galileo. Lifetime

Behemoth | TDNAusNZ

David Jolly | TDNAusNZ

BEHEMOTH TOWERSOVERE MEMSIE RIVALS

by Paul Vettise

As his name suggests, Behemoth is a brute of a horse and he

showed he had the talent to match his ample frame when the

Western Australian-visitor proved a class above his rivals in the

Caulfield feature.

A number of his opposition had high spring hopes, but they

were deflated by the David Jolly-trained powerhouse who was

given a gun ride by Craig Williams and Behemoth simply

outmuscled them to leave no excuses.

For Jolly, it ended an 18-year wait for his second Group 1

victory after producing Zip Zip Aray (Bellotto {USA}) to win the

2002 Goodwood H., but for rider Craig Williams they have come

as regular as clockwork as he=s now up to 60 top-flight

successes.

None would have come with a more hulking partner as

Behemoth though, who reversed the David and Goliath story by

overshadowing a game runner-up Mr Quickie.

AYou could see from his form and his record that the whole

idea was the build-up to the spring. He only had two runs in the

spring, and I was delighted with his first-up performance,@

Williams said.

Behemoth had won the G3 McKay S. in May and was then

spelled after finishing fourth in the G1 Goodwood H.

He returned to win a trial and then accounted for the

highly-regarded Dalasan (Dalakhani {Ire}) on his return in the

G3 Spring S. at Morphettville.

ATodd Pannell gave me a very good report about how he felt

from a jockey=s perspective and David, who has as great handle

on this horse, said he=s a different horse than when you first

rode him at Moonee Valley and in Adelaide,@ Williams said.

Due to his towering stature, Behemoth isn=t the easiest of

customers to load at the barrier.

AThe history of the horse is that getting him into the gates is

the problem. Thank you very much to the barrier attendants for

the work that they do,@ Williams said.

AI was able to utilise the good barrier and he was quite

dominant, he=s done a really good job today. It=s a tough

industry and every success is a great one and I=m not here

without the guidance and upbringing of my two parents, my two

brothers, and the team I have around me is amazing.

AMost importantly, is the other team at home, my family. It=s

great that we can continue to keep racing through this pandemic

and keep showcasing these amazing equine athletes.@

Behemoth jumped well to settle in behind the pace set up by

Begood Toya Mother (Myboycharlie {Ire}) and Streets Of Avalon

(Magnus) and when the latter felt the pinch into the straight the

gap opened for Williams.

His charge responded in electric fashion and took control of

Craig Williams aboard Behemoth | TDNAusNZ

Behemoth was first sold as a weanling for $120,000 at the

Inglis Great Southern Sale before Grand Syndicates picked him

up for the now bargain price of $6000 at the Magic Millions

National Yearling Sale with high x-ray issues the reason for the

price differential.

"On the odd occasion we have used x-rays, I've had two

different vets give me two different opinions as to where they

sat on the spectrum of high risk or low risk," Grand Syndicates

Racing Manager Sam Lyons subsequently told TDN AusNZ.

"I'm careful about letting x-rays talk you out of a horse you

like, simply because you are resting on someone's opinion."

Behemoth is out of the Listed Schweppervescene Sprint H.

winner Penny Banger (Zedrich), who is a half-sister to the stakes

winner Mister Minx (Surtee) and further back in the family is the

three-time Group 3 winner Latin Saint (Le Cordonnier {GB}).

Mr Quickie (Shamus Award) turned in another fine first-up

effort--he was third when fresh in last season=s G1 Makybe Diva

S.--to fuel encouragement for his spring prospects.

AHe jumped out so well the week prior and his work on

Tuesday was super. We were thinking about going to the 1400

metre handicap, but I=m so pleased we didn=t and it=s a great

result,@ trainer Phillip Stokes said.

AHopefully, he can hold his form and go on to bigger and

better things. He=s a stronger horse and I can=t wait to get him to

Flemington over a mile or further and maybe the Makybe Diva

again or a race like that.@

The 3-year-old Glenfiddich (Fastnet Rock) did well to run third

after looking awkward around the bend and Cascadian (GB)

(New Approach {Ire}) got home well from the back for fourth.

Disappointments of the race were the Group 1 winners Mystic

Journey (Needs Further), Streets Of Avalon (Magnus), Regal

Power (Pierro) and Gatting (Hard Spun {USA}) who were the last

quartet home.

TIZ THE LAW TOPSDERBY/OAKS CONTENDERSPUTTING IN FINAL WORKS

Likely GI Kentucky Derby favorite Tiz the Law (Constitution)

topped a list of sophomores putting in their final breezes ahead

of the Run for the Roses/Lilies Saturday, covering five panels in

:59.21 (1/3) on the Saratoga main track.

The native New Yorker was one of the first on the track at

5:45 a.m. in an attempt to beat the incoming rainstorm. With

regular breeze rider Heather Smullen in the irons, the flashy bay

covered his first three furlongs in :36.01 and galloped out in

1:12.01.

"Everything went fine. He came back well," trainer Barclay

Tagg said. "He did everything he was supposed to do. I'm

satisfied with this work. We had to make the decision this

morning to work him. We made the decision around 4:00.

Luckily, it wasn't raining when he was working. It's supposed to

rain all day, and the track may be worse tomorrow. I'm glad we

got the work in."

Tiz the Law is scheduled to ship to Churchill Downs Monday

and regular rider Manny Franco will join him in Louisville.

Gamine | Sarah Andrew

California Contingent Put in Final Preparations

Hall of Famer Bob Baffert sent out Derby contender Thousand

Words (Pioneerof the Nile) and Oaks runner Gamine (Into

Mischief) for their final breezes at Del Mar Saturday.

>TDN Rising Star= Gamine covered six furlongs in 1:11.60 (1/5)

with Juan Ochoa in the irons. The $1.8-million EASMAY topper

was clocked in splits of :24.40, :36.60 and :59.40, working in

company with SW Quality Response (Quality Road), who was

given a half-mile in :48 flat. A dazzling winner of both the

GI Acorn S. and GI Test S., Gamine is expected to be one of thetop choices in the Oaks. "She worked beautifully," Baffert said. "She's coming into therace very well and I'm very happy with her right now. It's goingto be a tough race, very competitive, but we're excited and shelooks ready for it." MGSW Thousand Words, victor of the Shared Belief S. last out, went five furlongs in :59.80 (2/53), going in splits of :11.80 and:36 flat and galloping out six panels in 1:11.40. He worked incompany with maiden Tapitution (Constitution), who coveredthe distance in 1:01. Champion Storm the Court (Court Vision) also breezed at DelMar Saturday, going six furlongs in 1:12.80 (2/5) under exerciserider Austin Solis. "A good work, all we were looking for," trainer Peter Eurtonsaid. "If he comes out of it well, we're headed East." Grade I winner Honor A. P. (Honor Code) breezed lateSaturday morning in SoCal, working seven furlongs in 1:27.20(2/2) with Hall of Famer Mike Smith aboard. He was clocked insplits of :25.80, :37.80, :50.20, 1:02.80 and 1:14.80 with a onemile gallop-out time of 1:40.60. AI just wanted an easy seven-eighths,@ trainer John Shirreffssaid. His major work was inthe bag.@ GII Tampa Bay Derby hero and GI Arkansas Derby runner-upKing Guillermo (Uncle Mo) went an easy four furlongs in :52.20(39/40). The bay went in splits of :14.40 and :27.20 and gallopedout five furlongs in 1:05.20. A[Trainer Juan Avila] asked me to go easy and it was exactlywhat the horse needed,@ exercise rider Edgar Garcia said. AI thoughthe galloped out around the turn well and was moving very easy onthe track. He doesn=t need to do much, he=s pretty fit.@ GIII Indiana Derby runner-up Major Fed (Ghostzapper) wasalso out for his final move Saturday, going five panels in a best-of-36 :59 flat.

SHIRL=S SPEIGHT OUT OF DERBY CONTENTION >TDN Rising Star= Shirl=s Speight (Speightstown) is no longer

being pointed to the GI Kentucky Derby after developing a

cough Saturday.

AUnfortunately, Shirl=s Speight has come up with a minor

cough today and he will not be going to the Kentucky Derby,@

owner/breeder Fipke Stable tweeted. AHis health is our number

one concern, and we=ll look forward to his next race.@

AHe=s coughing and full of mucus so we=ve had to put him on

antibiotics,@ trainer Roger Attfield said. AI=ve had four or five of

them [get sick] these last couple weeks actually. It=s nothing

majorly serious but it=s bad timing. We were looking forward to

seeing if we could do ething fancy but there will be another day.

Just normal stuff we have to go through quite often.@

An impressive debut winner at Woodbine July 4, Shirl=s Speight

followed suit with a victory in that venue=s GIII Marine S. July 25.

Nothhaft cont. from p1

Nothhaft continued, AI did some research and I decided to pick

horse racing and breeding. I had no background in the industry,

no friends in the industry. But I was a very casual fan, we used

to go to Bay Meadows in San Mateo for family outings once or

twice a year. We enjoyed that immensely.@

winner=s circle at Lingfield | photo courtesy Hank Nothhaft

Nothhaft cont.

Nothhaft teamed up with bloodstock agent Carl McEntee and

the two decided there would be value in purchasing race fillies

in England and relocating them

to the U.S., particularly to take

advantage of the Ship-and-Win

Bonus which rewarded out-of-

state horses who competed at

Del Mar. Nothhaft acquired

Halljoy (Ire) (Halling), already

group-placed in England, who

went right on to score at Del

Mar, as well as Living the Life

who was a maiden winner

when she was purchased

privately as a

3-year-old in 2013.

AWhen we started buying

these horses in England, one

part of this plan was Del Mar=s

Ship-In bonus,@ Nothhaft said.

ASo we would try to buy them at the right time and get them to

the United States so that Gary Mandella could get them

prepared and run them first time down at Del Mar. Living the

Life came available way early, and once we had acquired her Carl

said, >You know I have a brother who is a trainer in the UK. What

do you think about keeping her there for a while before we send

her to the States?@

To Nothhaft, whose business

had taken him to England

numerous times and who was a

lover of Dick Francis novels, as

well as a confessed Anglophile,

the suggestion was a light bulb

moment.

AI said, >Oh, we can do that?@

he recalled. AI was like a little

kid in a candy store. So I got

licensed and I joined the

Racehorse Owners Association.

I got my account at

Weatherbys, I got a

bookkeeper over there and so

on. And I hired Carl's brother

Phil to train her.@

Living the Life was soon exceeding initial expectations for her

new connections.

Nothhaft cont. ALiving the Life was a horse that we bought relativelyinexpensively and once we bought her, she was race fit and shequarantined with my brother,@ McEntee recalled. APhil got ahold of her and her career moved forward in leaps and bounds. She won two races for him relatively quickly and then he cameup with the idea to send her to the inaugural running of the All-Weather Championship at Lingfield. With her two wins, she waseligible to run in the filly sprint division and Phil said we had areal chance of hitting the board in the race. The purse moneywas $250,000, so we said we would give it a shot. Adam Kirby, who was the leading all-weather rider that year, agreed to rideher and,not only did she grab a piece of it, but she won by 7 1/2.That was the biggest race that my brother Phil has ever won inhis training career. That was lovely to share in.@ That day at Lingfield was a dream come true for Nothhaft as well. AJust as he came around the corner, Kirby took off and got thejump on them, kind of like a Formula One race on a restart, andsuddenly they had a seven-length lead,@ Nothhaft said. AShe hadgotten run down before, but she not only didn't get run downthat day, they didn't gain any ground on her at all. So we won a$250,000 race with a filly we paid less than $50,000 for. Shewon $200,000 before we switched her to the States. We were inseventh heaven. There was a tremendous crowd, I was anAmerican--a Yank--and they knew it. It was like being feted for

the rest of the day and just soaking in all this energy and all theexcitement. So that's the highlight of everything that'shappened to me since I've been involved in racing. I called mywife and told her I didn't need an airplane to get home fromEngland, I would just take wing and fly.@ Things only got better when Living the Life was transferred tothe Southern California barn of trainer Gary Mandella. Sheopened her Stateside campaign with an allowance victory overthe all-weather surface at Del Mar and was soon tackling gradedstakes company across the country at Pennsylvania=s PresqueIsle Downs for the 2014 GII Presque Isle Downs Masters S. It washomecoming for Nothhaft, who is now based in Texas. AI was born and raised within spitting distance from the trackup there, so now she not only fulfilled this latent desire to bethe British race horse owner from the novels, now I can go backto my roots,@ Nothhaft said. AI am a son of German immigrantsand ended up lucky enough to go to the Naval Academy and Iwas able to get ahead in life. But I have deep, blue-collar rootsin Western PA. So this was really a kick for me, just going back.@ Nothhaft continued, AWe got Mike Smith to ride her and justto make it a good story, we won the race. I get excited aboutwinning any race, but that really was a thrill. So the value ofLiving the Life went from $43,000 that we paid for her, and nowshe's won half a million by then and was worth high six or sevenfigures.@ Cont. p8

Nothhaft cont. Living the Life would go on to finish second in the 2015

GII Great Lady M S. before successfully defending her title at

Presque Isle that fall. In 2016, she was third in the GII Santa

Maria S. and the GI Santa Margarita S. before defeating the boys

in the GIII All American S. at Golden Gate Fields. She ended her

career with a narrow defeat in her third Presque Isle Masters.

AIf they had Tapeta or synthetic in this country, she would have

been a very difficult filly to come up against for anyone,@

McEntee said. AShe didn=t love the dirt, but this is a filly who is

graded stakes placed on dirt, turf and synthetic and obviously

was pretty unbelievable on the synthetic in this country. She

came back for a three-peat in the Masters and, if you go back

and watch the race, she got stuck in traffic and couldn=t get out

and she got beat about a half-inch to win it again. She was a filly

who, once you got her out, her turn of foot was spectacular.@

Retired to Nothhaft=s broodmare band, Living the Life=s first

foal is a now 2-year-old colt by Pioneerof the Nile. Retained by

his breeder, the bay is currently in training with Ben Colebrook

at Keeneland. The colt=s name is a throwback to his dam=s

success at Presque Isle, as well as Nothhaft=s Naval background.

AI named her first foal Commodore Perry because in the War

of 1812, when we defeated the British, the commodore up

there on Lake Erie was Commodore Perry. If you go to the Naval

Academy and see Memorial Hall, where they honor all the

graduates who have given their lives fighting for the country,

they have this 200-year old battle flag that says, >Don't give up

the ship.= That's Commodore Perry's flag from the War of 1812.@

Nothhaft is getting positive reports on Commodore Perry, who

is expected to make his debut during Keeneland=s fall meet.

Carl McEntee | Fasig-Tipton photo

Nothhaft cont.

AHe is a big, rangy Pioneerof the Nile colt,@ Nothhaft said of the

juvenile. AWe don't want to rush him. We think he's a two-turn

horse, so we don't want to jump into some of these really short

early 2-year-old races. There are 6 1/2 and seven-furlong dirt

races in the book for 2-year-old maidens at Keeneland, so that's

what we are looking at. I am quite excited about him.@

Living the Life=s second foal, the yearling colt by Tapit, is also

drawing positive reviews ahead of his engagement at Fasig-

Tipton.

AExpectations are pretty high,@ McEntee said of the yearling=s

impending sale. AHe=s a very well-balanced colt with good size

and very correct. He has all the qualities of the good Tapits and

obviously he is out of an exceptional race mare in Living the

Life.@

Living the Life, currently in foal to Triple Crown winner Justify,

is one of 14 broodmares in Nothhaft=s band. The group also

includes multiple graded stakes-

placed Kindle (Indian Charlie),

who was purchased by Nothhaft

for $50,000 at the 2009

Keeneland September Yearling

Sale. The 12-year-old mare has

already produced an American

Pharoah colt who sold for

$400,000 as a Keeneland

November weanling before

reselling for $2.2 million at

Keeneland September in 2018.

The band also includes Be

Envied (Lemon Drop Kid), the

dam of Finest City (City Zip),

whom Nothhaft purchased with

the future GI Breeders= Cup F/M Sprint winner in utero for

$37,000 at the 2011 Keeneland November sale, as well as

Randie=s Legend (Benchmark), dam of multiple graded stakes

winner Daddy is a Legend (Scat Daddy).

AProbably my comfort level is around 10 to 12 really good

commercial mares. That would be a good place for me to be in

the long run,@ Nothhaft said. AI've been trying to upgrade the

broodmare band as we go along. I got involved in racing just in

time to get hit by the decline in the stock market and the great

recession and it was clear that the only thing that sustained

itself at all was the upper end of the market. And I think that's

even clearer today than it was in 2008. To the degree that there

is any stability in the market, it is at the high end.@

Nothhaft=s plan is to sell most of his foals, while retaining a few

to race.

AI have a predetermined plan to sell a certain number of foals

every year and then keep a few to race, with the idea of

financial outcome being positive,@ he said. AWith Randie's

Legend, Living the Life or Kindle or some others, I would keep a

female member of the family. Oddly, as we sit here today, I

don't have one from any one of those horses. Kindle has

produced four colts and she is in foal with another [American

Pharoah] colt. So that's the problem there. Randie's Legend has

been a timing issue there. Living the Life is in foal with a filly by

Justify and I am keeping her. I already have a name picked out.@

While most of Nothhaft=s broodmare band consists of

homebreds or fillies he purchased to race, he and McEntee did

add to the group with some acquisitions from last year=s

Keeneland November sale. The new additions included Laseen

(Ire) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}) (hip 6), in foal to Uncle Mo, for

$200,000; Prado=s Sweet Ride (Fort Prado) (hip 54), in foal to

Speightstown for $285,000; and Miss Mahalia (Uncle Mo) (hip

319), in foal to Gun Runner, for $170,000.

AWe bought three very special

broodmares and they were in

foal to Uncle Mo, Speightstown

and Gun Runner,@ McEntee said.

AWe will be selling two of the

mares and foals in November

and they are in foal to American

Pharoah and Justify and the

foals look very, very good. The

one mare who was in foal to

Uncle Mo, she is in foal to Justify

and we will be keeping her.@

McEntee continued, AAs the

quality of his broodmares

improved, we started keeping

some fillies from the families

because they warranted being supported at the racetrack by

ourselves with the hope to bringing them into the broodmare

band. [Nothhaft] has two half-sisters to Finest City, both of

which are in the broodmare band. [Stakes winner] Grand Prix

(Tale of the Cat) has got her first foal on the ground, which is a

Mendelssohn, who is very, very nice and then Move (Silver

Train) has a really good Cairo Prince on the ground. It=s always

fun to have mares in that mid-range, but the reality is the safest

part of the market is the upper end of the market. We have

been very conscientious of moving on the lower-end mares and

taking the money we get from those and reinvesting it in the

top. It=s that sort of continuous growth that, as the mares get

better, they sell for more and then you have more to invest in

the higher end.@

Nothhaft has been working with McEntee since almost the

very beginning of his time in racing. Cont. p10

AI met Hank the first time in 2010 when I was the general

manager at Ghost Ridge Farms in Pennsylvania,@ McEntee said.

AHank is from Sharon, so Pennsylvania is important to him. We

had just purchased Smarty Jones at the farm and he ended up

buying a share. We bought one mare to send to him and he sent

in a mare called Randie=s Legend that he owned on the racetrack.@

McEntee continued, AHank and I have been friends and

colleagues for almost 12 years. He knows my family very well.

When his racehorses are broken, they end up going to my

brother Mark at Miacomet Farm and he still talks to my brother

Phil and he has horses in training with Ben Colebrook. Ben and I

have been friends for 20 years and it was at Ben=s house that I

met my wife. So this is a huge circle of people who have been

involved in my life. Hank is a client, but to be quite frank, he is a

mentor and a friend.@

The feeling is obviously mutual.

AHe is the age of my sons, so we're not contemporaries, but

we are very good friends,@ Nothhaft said of McEntee. AAnd I

think he considers me something of a mentor, not in a horse

racing sense, but in how to conduct business.@

Of the mare who helped bring them together, McEntee said,

AIt=s funny she is called Living the Life. It was a real sort of

wonderful moment for myself and Hank. We put the filly in

training with my brother Phil and it really is a family story.@

Nothhaft is clearly still relishing the achievements of his

graded stakes-winning mare, even as he prepares to send her

yearling through the ring at Fasig-Tipton.

AShe ran 35 times and won 10 times and she won $1,028,394,@

Nothhaft said. AAnd she gave me more enjoyment and more

thrills than you can ever imagine. I still have her and she has

produced Commodore Perry, who I think looks phenomenal, and

she has this tremendous Tapit on the ground. And then we have

a Justify filly [she is carrying]. The story goes on. I couldn't make

it up--and a lot of it was even planned. In horse racing when you

make a plan and it actually works out--which is usually not the

case--it's so exciting. But everything fell into place.@

The Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase will be held at

the company=s Newtown Paddocks Sept. 9 and 10 with each

session beginning at 10 a.m.

CHANNEL MAKER GOES COAST-TO-COAST

IN SWORD DANCER

Channel Maker (English Channel) is now a Grade I winner at

ages four, five and six after wiring the GI Sword Dancer S. over a

soggy Saratoga turf course Saturday. The victory also earned

him a spot in the starting gate for the GI Breeders= Cup Turf at

Keeneland in November.

Gliding up to dictate terms, the 8-1 shot was under a tight hold

by Manny Franco through measured splits of :25.10, :51.14,

1:17.27 and 1:42 with Marzo (Medaglia d=Oro) on his tail. That

rival called it quits on the backstretch and his stablemate

Aquaphobia (Giant=s Causeway) took his place with Corelli

(Point of Entry) alongside him. Turning for home in front,

Channel Maker still had plenty left in the tank and readily

responded when asked for more by Franco, cruising clear to a

decisive victory. Cross Border was second for an English Channel

exacta.

"He was strong throughout the stretch,@ said winning trainer

Bill Mott. AHe ran a powerful race. He loves the going. He likes it

here. He's tough when he turns for home on the lead. We

thought Marzo could be on the lead and we might be laying

second, but opportunity presented itself for him to be on the

lead and the jockey accepted the opportunity and it worked out

very well. Sometimes, you make the right decision and it worked

out well today.@

"He's not an easy horse to ride,@ said Franco. AWe try to go to

the lead but sometimes he doesn't break good. But today, we

were able to make it and he was traveling the whole way fine

and handled the soft ground really well.@

"Early on, I thought Manny had him in a great position,@ said

co-owner Dean Reeves. AHe broke well and said that afterwards

he had a lot of horse. So, he just took his time and got him in

position and he got going early into the turn and just left

everybody. It was a spectacular ride and the horse did the job."

Channel Maker (English Channel) wires the GI SwordDancer S. at Saratoga Saturday.

Sword Dancer cont.

Winner of this venue=s GII Bowling Green S. back in 2018 on

soft turf, Channel Maker was second in that year=s renewal of

this event before scoring his first top-level success in the 2018

GI Joe Hirsch Turf Classic S., also run over a soft course. His next

victory at the highest level came in the 2019 GI Man o= War S.

and he was fourth in that season=s Sword Dancer and a close

second when attempting a title defense in the Joe Hirsch.

A well-beaten 12th behind Horse of the Year Bricks and Mortar

(Giant=s Causeway) in last November=s BC Turf, the gelding was

fourth in the GII Mac Diarmida S. at Gulfstream Feb. 29 and

could only manage eighth next out in the GII Mervin Muniz

Memorial Cup S. at Fair Grounds Mar. 21. Filling the same spot

in Belmont=s Tiller S. June 4, the Ontario-bred completed the

superfecta in the GI Manhattan S. July 4 and crossed the line

fourth last time in the Aug. 1 Bowling Green, but was promoted

to third after Sadler=s Joy (Kitten=s Joy) was disqualified for

interfering with Channel Maker in the stretch.

Pedigree Notes:

Channel Maker is one of nine Grade I winners, 28 graded

stakes victors and 52 black-type scorers for Calumet stalwart

English Channel. The winner=s full-brother is Sovereign Award

winner Johnny Bear, who captured consecutive renewals of

Woodbine=s GI Northern Dancer Turf S. Their stakes-winning

half-sister Court Return (Court Vision) is the final foal out of

their stakes-winning dam In Return and both of them set new

course records with their black-type scores. Channel Maker hails

from the family of Grade I winner Auntie Mame (Theatrical

Win Win Win | Sarah Andrew

A rainbow shines on Win Win Win=s Forego victory | Sarah Andrew

WIN WIN WIN FROM THE CLOUDS IN FOREGO

Win Win Win (Hat Trick {Jpn}) did just that in Saturday=s

GI Forego S., coming from out of the clouds as yet another

round of rain poured down over the Saratoga main track to

secure his first top-level success. A step slow from the stalls, the

Live Oak homebred was not even in the picture early, trailing

the field by several lengths as Complexity (Maclean=s Music) and

True Timber (Mineshaft) duked it out through an opening

quarter in :22.28 and a half in :44.63. Rushing up into the frame

approaching the bend, the dark bay was 10-wide on the turn for

home and unleashed a furious late rally in the lane, storming

past Complexity in the final strides for a jaw-dropping upset

score.

"I honestly don't know what to say,@ said winning conditioner

Michael Trombetta. AHe dropped so far back and his chicklet and

number actually went off the screen and I couldn't even see

across the track. Honestly, I assumed something bad might have

happened where he took a bad step or something. I thought he

was absolutely out of the race and might not have had a chance

to even finish. But then turning for home, he came back on the

screen. It's just unbelievable. He's truly a good horse and

deserves this. I thought we were back at the [Kentucky] Derby,

that's how hard it rained. I think he can handle just about any

surface."

He continued, "It's a distance he likes, but he doesn't have the

best gate speed. The way this track has been playing, it's very

hard to close. Well, what he did, I haven't seen the whole meet."

Jockey Javier Castellano was also in awe, saying, "What an

amazing horse. I'm truly honored to ride the horse and very

blessed with the way everything went. He was very far back and

made a huge run to win the race. Not too many horses can do

that. He did it and in a nice way.@

The Hall of Fame pilot added, "I got a little concerned when I

got to the eighth pole. I didn't have any contact with the field. I

was way too far back. I had to start riding because I felt like I

wasn't going to get there, but the horse put in a lot of effort

from the quarter-pole to the wire. He made me look good."

Winner of the Pasco S. last term prior to a third in the GII

Tampa Bay Derby, Win Win Win was second to now MGISW

Vekoma (Candy Ride {Arg}) in Keeneland=s GII Toyota Blue Grass

S. in April. Promoted to ninth in the GI Kentucky Derby, he was

seventh in the GI Preakness S. and closed out his sophomore

season with a victory in turf in Belmont=s Manila S. last July.

Returning 11 months later in the grassy First Defence S. at

Belmont June 7, the Florida-bred was 10th that day and

improved dramatically when second behind the Complexity in a

one-mile optional claimer on the main track downstate July 2.

Pedigree Notes:

Win Win Win is the seventh Grade I winner for Hat Trick and

the second to achieve the feat in North American, following

2012 GI Jamaica H. victor King David. He is also the 17th graded

scorer for that stallion and one of his 34 stakes winners. Win

Win Win is the third and final foal out of Miss Smarty Pants, who

is a half-sister to GSW Unbridled Humor (Distorted Humor).

The chief speed on paper for Friday night=s GII Charles Town

Classic, Sleepy Eyes Todd indeed controlled the pace beneath

Carlos Delgado and turned the $600,000 test into a one-horse

show.

Able to establish the lead with a minimum of fuss, the 4-year-

old got the opening quarter-mile in :24.64 and the half in a

hassle free :49.14. Asked for a bit more speed passing the three-

eighths peg, Sleepy Eyes Todd was clear rounding the final bend,

felt a right-handed stick on the swing for home and shot away to

win convincingly. Plus Que Parfait, the 2019 G2 UAE Derby

winner, raced wide throughout and plugged on gamely for

second ahead of defending race champion Runnin=toluvya.

Sleepy Eyes Todd was making an appearance at an eighth

different racetrack, including victories at Remington Park,

Canterbury and Fonner Park, where he won that track=s

marquee event, the Bosselman Gus Fonner S., by 6 1/2 lengths

Apr. 29. Runner-up to Owendale (Into Mischief) in last year=s

GIII Oklahoma Derby, Sleepy Eyes Todd was last seen just failing

in the Lone Star Mile S. June 28.

Pledge Mom is the dam of the 2-year-old colt I Hear Music

recently covered by Enticed (Medaglia d=Oro--It=s Tricky).

Yaupon took his record to a perfect three-for-three and

became the second graded winner of the day for Uncle Mo with

a victory in the GII Amsterdam S. Hustled up to the front by Joel

Rosario, the dark bay clicked off an opening quarter in :21.93

with Long Weekend giving chase in second. Registering a half-

mile in :44.68 with a host of pursuers ranging up menacingly,

Yaupon kept on finding over the sloppy going, pulling clear in

the lane for a decisive score.

"He's extremely fast. He's got an elite amount of speed,@

trainer Steve Asmussen said. "It's very important that a horse

with his physical, and as fast as he is, is a graded stakes winner

here at Saratoga. I think we can sit down and map out a serious

future for him from here.@

As for a potential match-up with stablemate and GI Alfred G.

Vanderbilt S. winner Volatile (Violence) in the Breeders= Cup, the

Hall of Famer said, "It's maybe why there are different people

[jockeys] on them to begin with. He's just that level. We're very

fortunate that they're both doing so well."

Graduating by a nose in his Churchill downs unveiling June 20,

Yaupon wired a track-and-trip optional claimer July 18 and

breezed a bullet three panels in :37 flat over the Oklahoma Aug.

24. Carrying the same orange and white Heiligbrodt colors as

Asmussen=s champion sprinter Mitole (Eskendereya), the

sophomore was a $355,000 KEESEP yearling, who RNA=d for

$485,000 at FTFMAR before selling to these connections for

$255,000 at last year=s OBS June Sale.

Asmussen explained why the colt did not debut until this year,

saying, "He's a 2-year-old that worked :20.3 at Gulfstream for

the 2-year-old-in training sale. He had very minor issues, but it

was just the physics of it when you're capable of going that fast.

We wanted to give him all the maturity we could. We were

trying to follow a similar plan with him as we were with Mitole

for the Heiligbrodts. They had expected to run him over the

winter at the Fair Grounds, but he had another minor issue, so

we erred on the side of caution as far as waiting and letting him

get to 100%."

Pedigree Notes:

Yaupon is the second 3-year-old son of Uncle Mo to win a

graded stake at Saratoga Saturday, following Bye Bye Melvin=s

win on soft turf in the GIII Saranac S. earlier on the card. He is

the 64th black-type victor and 36th graded victor overall for the

Coolmore stallion. The winner=s dam is GISP Modification, a

saughter of SW Swift Alliance (Afleet) and a half to GSW Sky

Alliance. Also the dam of MGSP Sawyer Hill, the mare=s recent

produce includes a yearling filly by American Pharoah and a

Good Magic colt born May of this year. The 15-year-old was

bred back to Uncle Mo this spring.

C Z Rocket continued his hot streak and stamped his ticket to

the GI Breeders= Cup Dirt Mile with a victory in the Pat O=Brien S.

Hammered down to even-money for this return to stakes

company, the bay stalked from a two-wide third as Law Abidin

Citizen set a :23.10 opening quarter. Ranging up in tandem with

Flagstaff to tackle the pacesetter entering the far turn, C Z

Rocket wore down his rivals in the final sixteenth, edging past

Flagstaff to score.

"He broke well and usually he doesn't,@ said trainer Peter

Miller. AThe pace was slow and Flavien [Prat] had him in the

perfect spot. Tom Kagele [owner] actually called me [about

claiming the horse] and I said, >His form is bad right now, but

he's a runner.' You could see he had run some really fast races. I

like old class horses that have shown talent. If you can get them

going in the right direction they can run back to past form. Tom

claimed him and the rest is history."

Claimed by these connections for $40,000 from Frank Fletcher

and Al Stall out of a fifth-place finish at Oaklawn Apr. 30, C Z

Rocket has been perfect for the Peter Miller barn, starting with

a decisive score in for a $50,000 tag at Churchill May 25. A

dominant victor at Churchill again in a June 21 optional claimer,

he followed suit with another optional claimer victory at

Keeneland July 12.

Bye Bye Melvin took to blinkers and the rain-soaked turf wellat Saturday, upsetting the GIII Saranac S. at 19-1. Under a ride approaching the far turn, Bye Bye Melvinwas churning up sod as he brushed with his neighborBodecream (Bodemeister) at the top of the lane, but found hisfooting in the final sixteenth, surging late to nail Don Juan Kittenon the line. Chart, backed down a bit off a 10-1 morning line quote for this

first turf try, came out on the winning end of a blanket finish to

become her sire (by First Samurai)=s first graded winner. A

romping debut winner sprinting at Tampa in January, the bay

was thrust into the deep end after that and finished ninth in the

GII Davona Dale. She subsequently joined the Mark Casse barn

after original conditioner Gary Contessa retired, and was second

behind the streaking Boerne (Fed Biz) back in allowance

company at Gulfstream in April. Chart checked in sixth at almost

59-1 in a stakes-level Churchill allowance May 16, but bounced

back to annex an allowance on the local Tapeta July 9.

Away well but reined in to sit second off of stablemate Two

Sixty, Chart was in the bridle as she tugged her way along behind

splits of :23.55 and :46.93. She ranged up to confront the

pacesetter at the head of the lane as Avie=s Samurai attempted

to sneak up the fence and Diamond Sparkles--the third of four

Casse runners--revved up out wide from the back of the pack.

Chart forged to the front in the late stages, and continued to

fend off challenges from all angles to get the job done.

AShe is so naturally talented that she won really easily at

Tampa in her first start, and in hindsight jumping her up into a

Grade II against horses like Tonalist=s Shape (Tonalist) in the

Davona Dale was too much too soon,@ Jon Green of owner DJ

Stable told the TDN. AWhen we transferred her over to Mark

Casse, Mark insisted on really trying her from the beginning, and

focusing on getting her to relax and sit off of speed. That=s what

she did in her next start... We brought her to Churchill Downs,

and she caught a very difficult field and didn=t run very well at

all. After that, we wanted to give her a little more time between

races, and sent her up to Canada. Mark has done an outstanding

job of getting her to relax and use her tactical speed and still

make a run down the stretch, and that=s what she=s done in her

last two starts.@

Turf had always been in the back of her connections= minds,

and Green noted that Chart has very wide, flat feet that are

typically suited to turf travel.

AIt=s always been our goal with this filly to try her on the turf,@

he said. AShe=s by a grandson of Giant=s Causeway out of a War

Front mare--the pedigree just screams grass. So, we kind of did

it in baby steps, trying her on the Tapeta first and she seemed to

like it. Mark was able to get her to breeze once on the grass up

there and she threw in a bullet breeze just in hand, nice and

easy (5f, :59.40, 1/5 with the dogs up Aug. 21). That really gave

us the confidence to try her in this type of race.@

Future plans are still up in the air for Chart, but Green is

looking forward to a productive 2021. Lea himself blossomed at

age five.

AThis was really the focus for right now, to see if she would

really stretch her legs out and take to the turf,@ Green said. AThis

is a good stepping stone because it=s a one-turn mile. We=ll

probably try to get her into one more turf stake before the end

of the year and then give her a little time to develop. She=s still a

long-legged, long-bodied horse who needs to fill out... It=s great

to have a filly like this who runs middle distances, has tactical

speed, can run on all three surfaces--she=s very versatile and her

4-year-old year is going to be really exciting.@

Given a supremely confident ride by Nik Juarez, Valiance easily

validated odds-on favoritism in Saturday=s Eatontown S.,

downgraded from Grade III status when the remnants of

Hurricane Laura washed the race off the turf.

New Jersey Horse of the Year Valedictorian won the sprint into

the first turn, setting the pace from Gotham Gala while racing

well away from the inside running rail. Valiance hugged the

fence from third under a long Juarez hold. Valedictorian

continued to make play down the backstretch and into the turn,

but Valiance peeled away from the fence and into the three

path looking like a winner. Gotham Gala overtook the front-

runner with about 2 1/2 furlongs to race, but Valiance had the

move covered, easing alongside that one and only truly being

asked to run for the final 100 yards under hands-and-heels

riding.

Unbeaten in three starts last season, including this track=s

Open Mind S. last summer, Valiance was an even fourth in an

off-turf renewal of the May 16 Powder Break S. at Gulfstream

Park. Sixth behind Mean Mary (Scat Daddy) in the GII New York

S. at Belmont June 27, the gray filly most recently overcame an

eventful trip to take a July 28 optional claimer over the Colonial

turf course.

Pedigree Notes:

Valiance=s dam, winner of the GI Madison S. at Keeneland

during her racing days, was purchased by China Horse Club in

foal to War Front for $1.5 million at Keeneland November in

2015. The daughter of MGISW Lazy Slusan (Slewvescent) is also

the dam of the 2-year-old colt Harbor Bay (Exaggerator), a

$250,000 KEESEP yearling who breezed a best-of-seven four

furlongs in :47 1/5 at Los Alamitos Aug. 26. Last Full Measure is

also responsible for a yearling filly from the first crop of Mastery

and was bred to Constitution in the most recent breeding

season. Valiance is bred 3x3 to Unbridled, same as champion

Unique Bella.

The slight second betting favorite behind 12-5 Little Menace

(Into Mischief), Relentless Dancer pegged back longshot Pitching

Ari to post a first non-restricted black-type success in Friday=s

Robert Hilton Memorial S. at Charles Town.

Settled midpack after exchanging bumps with a rival at the

break, Relentless Dancer--racing with blinkers off--chased four

wide, but in touch down the backstretch. He came under a ride

at the quarter pole and was deep off the turn, but, despite

racing on his incorrect lead in the final furlong, he collared a

stubborn Pitching Ari and edged clear in the final 30 yards.

Fourth in both the GIII Holy Bull S. and GII Tampa Bay Derby

earlier this year, Relentless Dancer defeated fellow state-breds

in the Louisiana Legends Cheval S. at Evangeline July 4 and was a

distant 10th in the grassy Caesars S. on yielding turf at Indiana

Grand Aug. 12. The winner=s dam foaled a filly by Takeover

Proud Emma and Message hit the wire together in Friday=s

Tranquility Lake S. at Del Mar, each earning their first stakes

victories in the process.

Proud Emma, stretching out off an allowance second going 6

1/2 furlongs at this track 12 days prior, bobbled slightly at the

start, but quickly recovered and managed to cross and clear her

four rivals at the midpoint of the first turn as Message was hung

out three and four deep. Proud Emma--runner-up in Santa Anita

allowance company when last seen May 25--led through the

middle stages, but Message began to hit her best stride with

three furlongs to go and linked up with the pacesetter at the top

of the lane. Message sustained that momentum to put as much

as a neck on Proud Emma with time ticking away, but the front-

runner counterpunched gamely to share the spoils.

Proud Emma, the 54th stakes winner for her sire, is out of a

half-sister to GSP Cousin Stephen (Proud Citizen) and has a

yearling half-sister by Fed Biz. Message becomes the 19th black-

type winner for her sire and is a half-sister to the 2-year-old filly

A second-out winner July 24 in a seven-panel maiden special

weight taken off the turf at Gulfstream, Hot Blooded looked to

make it two in a row with this step up to black-type company

and a first official try on the grass. The blazed-faced bay broke

with the leaders, but was content with some cover as he settled

into third on the rail. Swarmed by rivals after a half, Hot Blooded

was tipped out to move around the front two and shook clear

under a vigorous ride from Emisael Jaramillo.

On the heels of a dominating 11-length maiden win July 23

the prohibitive 1-2 chalk. The bay stalked in the three path as a

half passed in :46.57. Midway on the turn, rider Victor Lebron

roused Spanish Loveaffair and she leveled off to lead the field

home. Director=s Cut ate into the winning margin late, but

Spanish Loveaffair left no doubt to remain unbeaten in two

FOUNDER (c, 2, Upstart--Blue Beryl, by Bernstein), sent off right

at his morning line of 6-1, looked to have it all to do at the

midpoint of his career debut Saturday at Saratoga, but he caught

the eye with a rail run into the stretch, came out at the eighth

pole, raced as green as the boggy grass and improbably ran

down his better-backed stablemate Highly Motivated (Into

Mischief) to open his account at first asking. The highly regarded

two favorites, Newbomb (Speightstown) and Happymac

(Runhappy), had hustled to the lead early from the extreme

inside and outside posts and opened up on the field. While

Founder was trailing the field in ninth, Highly Motivated tracked

in third, overtaking the pair about a sixteenth from home as

Founder was swerving down the stretch. Highly Motivated

switched to his wrong lead but looked clear until Founder rallied

furiously late for the neck triumph. These same connections

unleashed another son of Upstart--Reinvestment Risk--to a jaw-

dropping >TDN Rising Star= performance earlier this meet.

A $220,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase, the bay

TRANSPORTER (f, 3, Twirling Candy--The Winged Venus, by

both his sire and dam. The mile Saturday should have suited him

better and it did. Racing midpack in the tightly packed field of six

TORSIE'S CHARM (f, 2, More Than Ready--Heavenly Landing

{GSW, $313,115}, by Pulpit), a never-involved ninth and last in

her July 26 debut over the Ellis lawn at a mile, ran like a

different filly Saturday when shortening up a furlong and moving

to the main track. Showing the way from the rail at 4-1 and

getting her early fractions in :23.06 and :46.38, the bay shook

loose at the top of the stretch and eased up for a 4 1/2-length

win over Shastaloo (Algorithms). The homebred=s dam won the

GIII Marshua=s River S. at Gulfstream in 2012. Torsie=s Charm is

the most recent foal to live out of Heavenly Landing. Lifetime

LAZY SUMMER DAY (f, 2, Summer Front--Bar Lazy J, by Gone

West) ran on late to be a distant sixth at Gulfstream Aug. 8, and

was installed the 7-5 favorite bidding to become her red-hot

trainer=s sixth 2-year-old maiden special weight winner at the

meet. Drafting in a good spot in third, the bay ranged up three

deep to take control in upper stretch and kicked away

convincingly from there to don cap and gown by 1 1/4 lengths.

Stablemate Waiting on William (Will Take Charge) got up for

second under energetic encouragement. The winner has a

More Than Ready), a two-time starter in Kentucky at Churchill

both previous sprint tries. She=d worked well in a spin over the

Monmouth track though, getting four furlongs in :48 1/5 (4/64),

and was pounded down to even money for her Northeast debut.

Tete a Tete flew out of the gate and set all the pace with rider
