A message from Fr. David:
Advent: Prepare the Way
This weekend is the first week of the great season of Advent. The four Sundays leading up to Christmas are set aside so that we can quietly prepare our hearts for the Incarnation, that amazing mystery when the Son of God, takes on flesh, and becomes the Son of Man. We also use this time to contemplate the great mystery of the second coming of Jesus on the last day.
To help you in this preparation the Parish Staff is offering an Advent gift for each family. Please pick up a copy of The Search, the latest book by Chris Stefanick. Chris is a dynamic disciple and Evangelist, in this book he guides us in our quest to answer some of life’s most challenging and persistent questions.
This season can easily be overlooked as many people around us have already begun to celebrate Christmas. Let us resist the urge to follow the secular culture and truly take advantage of these days. And when Christmas does arrive, may Christ find us expectantly awaiting the fulfillment of all of His promises.
Why Latin? “If there are some present who do not understand what is being said or sung, they know at least that all is said and sung to the glory of God, and that is sufficient for them to join in it devoutly.” – St. Augustine
As it has been the local tradition here at Holy Family, this weekend with the beginning of Advent we will be using the Latin Mass responses. As you may know, Latin is the universal language of the Church. By using Latin we are connecting ourselves with all the many Catholics throughout the world, and all those who have lived before us. Latin is considered a “dead language”, therefore the meanings of the words are concrete and not easily misinterpreted; it allows for an exactness in our expressions of faith.
I know that Latin can be a little difficult for some people, maybe even intimidating; and for some it causes distress because the meanings of the words are not understood. To this, I would invite you to allow the mystery of the language to draw you deeper into the mystery of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
And please know that the use of Latin in the Mass is highly encouraged by the Church; it is in no way an attempt to go back to the pre-Vatican II era. By us using Latin, we are actually closer to the current mind of the Church. The responses are available in the digital worship aid and there are many resources available online to help ease the transition.
As we begin the Advent Season, let’s join our minds and hearts and tongues with the universal Church.
Please follow https://liturgyguy.com/2015/12/07/7-reasons-for-the-use-of-latin-in-the-mass/ for a short article for 7 reasons why the use of Latin in the Mass is a good thing. ________________________________________________________
