CCD is inspired by the Society of Jesus (commonly known as the Jesuits) a global male religious order allied with the Roman Catholic Church having a five hundred years history.VisionCCD is an academic organization meant to harness the knowledge of social sciences to the service of Gujarat society, specifically its disadvantaged sections the minorities, tribals, dalits and women.

MissionCCD endeavours to provide a range of relevant and reliable researched data, primarily on religion, society, culture and development in Gujarat towards building a humane and just society.

Aims and ObjectivesCCD’s vision and mission have focused on the marginal sections of society. Its studies, seminars and publications have been on subjects such as nationalism, riots, communalism, changing character of religion, urbanisation, environment (land, water and forests), displacement, resettlement, urban poor, tribes, dalits, minorities and women.

InfrastructureThe campus is lined by huge trees and is somewhat cooler than the city. CCD is housed in its own building. Presently it has the administrative block on the ground floor and the academic block on the first floor. A library and conference block has been constructed a decade ago. The conference hall is dedicated to Prof. J.S. Bandukwala. The conference room has state of the art facilities. CCD has also guest rooms to accommodate around15 persons.

Prof. A. M. Shah LibraryThe library now has around 7000 volumes in social sciences and a large collection of articles including reprints, adding up to more than 10,000 entries. Currently it subscribes to 25 journals. It continues to produce the Blue Files containing numerous indexed articles on a variety of subjects. It also has a collection of books, documents, journals, newspapers and newsmagazines related to projects carried out during 2001-2019.

Founder Director (2001 – 2021)Prof. Lancy Lobo, S.J. has a Master’s degree in Anthropology and a Doctoral degree in Sociology from

the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi, India. He has published over hundred articles in various journals, twenty five books and scores of mimeographs based on research studies over 40 years. He has been Professor and the Director of Centre for Social Studies, Surat. He was an International Visiting Fellow at the Woodstock Centre, Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., USA 1999-2000.

Director (2021–)Dr. James Regina C. Dabhi has a M.Sc. degree in Voluntary Sector Organisation from London, School of Economics and Ph.D. in Sociology from Gujarat University. He has served as research Director at the Human Development and Research Centre, St. Xavier’s college, Ahmedabad. He has worked as Country Director of Afghanistan Research and Development Institute (ARDI) based in Kabul and taught in Herat and Bamiyan Universities in Afghanistan teaching sociology, social research and development management. He also has served as the executive Director of Indian Social Institute, New Delhi.
