CENTRE OF ADVANCED FACULTY TRAINING IN

HOME SCIENCE POST-GRADUATE & RESEARCH CENTRE, ACHARYA N.G RANGA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY,

RAJENDRANAGAR, HYDERABAD

Introduction:

Community Science Education (previously Home Science) has been a major pathway for

women into public education and for providing entry to a wide variety of careers for women in

academia, business, public education, government and health care. This development of women

is essentialnot merely for the benefit of womenfolk but for the very survival of the society, for

the progress, peace and prosperity of the country. Community Science being an applied and

integrated science aims at improving the quality of life for the individual, the family and the

community. All the national concerns such as poverty, illiteracy, health, population, nutrition,

security, infant mortality are covered in Community Science education.

The CAFT– Home Science in PJTSAU, Hyderabad, is the only centre in India to

disseminate advanced knowledge and technical skill in Home Science education to the faculty

members of Home Science in SAU‟s and ICAR Institutions. ICAR elevated the status of Centre

of Advanced Faculty Training–Foods & Nutrition to Centre of Advanced Faculty Training–

Home Science (CAFT) in May, 2010, on recognition of the specialized services delivered by

CAS-PJTSAU over the past 16 years. The redefined mandate of CAFT- Home Science is to

serve as a national resource and training centre for five disciplines of Home Science viz., Foods

and Nutrition, Human Development and Family Studies, Family Resource Management, Apparel

& Textiles and Home Science Extension and Communication. Each discipline in Home Science

has dedicated its activities to achieve national and international quality and standards in food,

nutrition, health security, textiles, apparels, psychology, family studies, housing and consumer

safety, through its endeavour in teaching, research and extension. Faculty of Home Science in

PJTSAU has extended advanced trainings for curriculum up-gradation and strengthening

teaching methods and evaluation at UG and PG level. Over the years, it has been the National

resource centre for dissemination of nutrition information. The policy of the faculty is to

inculcate scientific spirit in home science education through teaching, research and extension

activities and enhance entrepreneurial skills to generate natural opening for self employment in

all the five disciplines of Home Science for better service of the community.

Objectives of CAFT:

1. To update the curriculum and courses of Home Science and to strengthen teaching and

evaluation at UG and PG level.

2. To develop quality instruction materials, manuals, multimedia, interactive study

materials, digital specimen etc. as modern curricula delivery tools and materials.

3. To support the government in training personnel, by disseminating Home Science

information to personnel of different sectors.
