Home & Outdoor Living Show

By Jason WilliamsPresident, Central Susquehanna Builders Association

Our organization, the Central Susque-hanna Builders As-

sociation, was established in November 1966 as a nonprofit organization.

It serves Columbia, Montour, Northumber-land, Snyder and Union counties. The CSBA is an association of members of the trades — plumbers, electricians, carpenters, excavators, masons and HVAC technicians and vendors serving the con-struction industry.

We are homebuild-ers, remodelers, general contractors, installers of windows, doors, roofing, and siding and many other things.

To be in our select group we require you to be a member of the National Association of Home Builders and the Penn-sylvania Home Builders, to subscribe and confirm, with signature, to abide by the CSBA’s Code of Ethics, and to have current and proper licenses and insurance.

The code of ethics is available for all to see at our web site www.csbapa.org. If your choice of con-tractor is a CSBA member he/she has been vetted at no charge to you.

This is the year for our 29th annual Home and Outdoor Living Show and our 50th anniversary.

If you were to take a sur-vey in the Central Susque-hanna Valley, the people you surveyed would either not know who we are or they would say: “They have an annual home show.”

We are more than a leg-endary annual event.

We also support our ar-ea’s youth who are looking to enter the trades. This

year we are having these two building contests — “Luxury Dog House” and “Mouse Trap Car.” Teams from local high schools and middle schools will sign up to participate.

There are no fees for participation from the schools or participants. The “Luxury Dog House” building will be done by two-student teams.

First-place winners will each receive $100, second-place winners $75 each and third-place win-ners $50 each.

There will be a silent auction for the doghouses with the proceeds being returned to the participat-ing schools. Home Depot is our primary sponsor for this event with Garvey’s participating by providing flooring.

The “Mouse Trap Car” competition will also be done by two-student teams. They will build their car and then participate in an agility test. First-, second- and third-place ribbons will be awarded.

Each participant will receive a certificate and a surprise gift.

This competition is sponsored by Kreischer Cabinets.

In addition each year, six members of our organi-zation sponsor the Lego building contest. This year there are two age groups: 8 and under and 9 through 12.

The winners are re-warded, but so are the participants for creating an atmosphere of fun, com-petitive interaction. The judges have a tough time selecting first-, second- and third-place winners.

At the end of the school year, scholarships are awarded to graduating trades’ seniors to help them further their educa-tion.

This is handled through the CSBA women’s auxil-iary.

The auxiliary uses the annual Home Show as a means for this philan-thropy.

Each year the CSBA

looks for new ways to engage our youth so that we may spark an interest in being a member of the trades and having a re-warding career in an ethi-cal practice of their craft.

The CSBA is also a traditional organization in that it has the interests of its industry as well as its constituents at heart.

Through our member-ships in regional and national organizations we

monitor proposed legisla-tion that would affect the daily lives and well-being of our members and of all area residents with spe-cific regards to legislative adoption of laws pertaining to permitted construction and materials used.

Contact us at CSBA, P.O. Box 409, Danville, Pa. 17821. Call (570) 966-6025. Email [email protected] or visit www.csbapa.org

By Jason WilliamsPresident, Central Susquehanna Builders Association

I f the thought of spring cleaning makes you long for winter, it’s time

to think about these annual chores in a new way. By dedicating just a few days to complete these simple tasks, you will keep your home running smoothly and protect your invest-ment at the same time.

Inside your home As the weather gets

warmer it’s important to ensure your windows are in good working condition.

Inspect all windows for proper operation and a tight fit. Clean the window tracks and check that the weather-stripping hasn’t cracked or torn. Prevent-ing unwanted outside air from leaking into your home also will reduce your energy bills. Remember, open

windows can be hazard-ous, especially to young children. Screens are designed to keep insects from getting into a home; not to prevent a child from falling. Parents need to take action to lessen the potential risks of acciden-tal falls from windows. Have your air condi-

tioning system inspected and cleaned. If your system has a filter, replace it every three months to keep the unit working ef-ficiently. Warmer weather also

means that pests — in-cluding ants, roaches, rats, and termites – will be look-ing to join your household. Keep them out by sealing cracks and openings along baseboards, behind sinks, and around pipes and windows.

Outside your home Check the condition of

glazing compound, caulk-ing and exterior paint. Re-

place or paint as needed. Exchange glass and

screens in storm doors and/or windows. Ensure the screens are clean by washing gently with soapy water. Inspect your roof for

snow damage. To prevent outside

pests from entering your home, look for cracks and holes on the outside of your home and seal them up. Be sure to include points where utility lines

enter the house. Address damage to the basement foundation and windows. Check for evidence

of termites such as sag-ging floors and ceilings or dry, brown tunnels in the ground near the home’s foundation. Seed and feed the

lawn and plant annuals, cut back perennials that need pre-growth pruning. Clean your gutters of

debris. Yes, you have to do this in the fall and the

spring. Long winters bring a mix of storms and heavy

winds that can carry a lot of debris to your gutters.

Spring into cleaning to protect value

Home & Outdoor Living Show

By Jason WilliamsPresident, Central Susquehanna Builders Association

Every April 22, mil-lions of people around the globe

celebrate Earth Day. It is a day dedicated to improv-ing our environment and taking better care of the world in which we live.

You don’t have to wait until April to incorporate the concepts of Earth Day in your own home, however. These simple, environmentally friendly household suggestions can make you an Earth Day advocate all year long.

Conserve waterand your pocketbook

The Environmental Pro-tection Agency estimates that the average American family uses more than 300 gallons of water every day. To lower your household’s water consumption this, EPA suggests that you: Don’t let the water run

while shaving or brushing teeth. Take short showers

instead of tub baths. Keep drinking water in

the refrigerator instead of letting the faucet run until the water is cool. Scrape, rather than

rinse, dishes before load-ing into the dishwasher; and wash only full loads. Wash only full loads of

laundry or use the appro-priate water level or load size selection on the wash-ing machine. Repair all leaks. A

leaky toilet can waste 200 gallons a day. Water the lawn or gar-

den during the coolest part

of the day. Early morning is best. Group plants ac-

cording to their water use so you don’t over water. Check with your local ex-tension service or nurser-ies for advice. Set sprinklers to water

the lawn or garden only — not the street or sidewalk. Use soaker hoses or

trickle irrigation systems for trees and shrubs. Keep your yard

healthy. Remove dead grass from your lawn, use mulch and set your mower on a high setting to en-courage grass growth and eliminate weeds naturally. Sweep the driveway

and walkways outside instead of using a hose to spray it down.

A few behavioral changes in your water usage can make a big dif-ference to the environment and to your pocketbook.

Improve the energy efficiency of your home

When the time comes to replace your appliances, consider purchasing energy-efficient models. Tankless water heaters, for example, are comparable in cost to traditional gas water heaters but are 30 percent more efficient, ac-cording to the U.S. Depart-ment of Energy.

Replacing an older heat-ing, ventilation and air-conditioning system with more efficient equipment will not only save energy,

you will notice savings on your utility bill, too.

If you’re not ready to re-place your heating system, an easier option is to re-place your old thermostat with a programmable one.

These types of auto-matic thermostats will lower the heat when home owners are at work, but

will automatically raise it to make the home com-fortable again when they return home.

If you are considering remodeling your home, a Certified Green Pro-fessional can offer the expertise you need to save energy and to help the environment.

These suggestions are just the tip of the iceberg. For more information on green household prac-tices or to find a CGP in your area, contact Central

Susquehanna Builders As-sociation www.csbapa.org or visit the National As-sociation of Home Builders at nahb.org.TIPS, from Page A7

petition. Saturday. Compe-tition begins at 10 a.m. and ends by 3 p.m.

Students will design and build a dog dream house that is no bigger than 3 feet wide by 4 feet long by 3 feet high. Students make decisions on the exact size, shape, design, etc., of the doghouse, which may not be larger than the sizes listed. All doghouses will be judged on design, func-tionality, teamwork and skills used. Doghouses will be auctioned.

Mouse Trap Car compe-tition. Saturday. Competi-tion begins at 1 p.m. and ends by 3 p.m.

A pre-assorted Mouse Trap Car kit is provided, which is complete with the exception of small hand tools and glue. The design and assembly is in a team format. The Mouse Trap Car allows each team to become involved with the design process, science and technology applica-tions (simple machines, forces and motion, New-ton’s laws) and problem-solving. Prizes awarded in each competition.
