PRESIDENT’S REPORT By Rod Pattison

Well the end of another squash year is upon us, and it’s great to be able to report that the district is in a better

state, than it was at the end of last year, and beginning of this year. With the help of some major changes that had

to be put in place over the year.

At the start of the year the district found it hard to find funds to operate, after having the levy increase turned

down at last years AGM, and very little success in grant funding. So come January, we found ourselves with not

enough money in the bank to pay the wages. This situation was always a possibility when the fixed income, does

not match the out goings, and you are relying on grants to make up the short fall. With this in mind the board had

a series of meetings looking at budgets and programmes that the district had planned to run over the coming year,

and what the return was for the money spent. From this review we shut down a number of programmes that the

District had planned. With the micro courts we made them user pays, and limited them to schools within 30km of

a Squash Club. During the year this change has meant that the four courts have not been used.

We reduced the coaching to a minimum and made secondary schools pay for their coaching. We had to introduce

user pays for all National teams’ events, which the District would be represented; this had to be, at no cost to the

District so if no funding was forth coming then the players would have to meet full cost. We stopped all Board of

Directors payment for travel to meetings and Directorship fees were forfeit by the board members, we reduced all

administration cost to a minimum. We also reduced the travel of our SDO to a minimum. From this the district

took a big change in direction and left it up to clubs to work in their areas for membership growth.

As the year moved on it was not all doom and gloom, we still managed to hold on to and gain sponsorship for

some programmes. InspireNet with the elite junior squad, Sports Manawatu for coaching of coaches, NZCT and

Perry Foundation for SDO and Secretary wages and the Lion Foundation for our representative teams travel and

accommodation and lastly Endeavour Trust for funds towards Level 0 and One courses.

Board management through this year have a demanding year, with Ross Hewitt resigning to move to Australia

part way through the year we were now down to three Board members. Donna Wilson our SDO resigned in July

to also move to Australia after four years in the job. At this time the Board made a decision not to appoint a new

SDO till January/February 2009 as the squash year was starting to wind down and most of the programmes had

all been set up through to the end of the year. I would like to thank both Donna and Ross for the work and time

they have put into the District both as administrators and elite players and wish them both well across the

Tasman.

Membership has remained static throughout the year with some clubs up and some down. Tournaments around

the District have been well supported with some clubs having big increased player numbers. Prince Series

numbers were down on last year, but the District will be running this series again next year. There will be some

changes to the junior series for 2009.

Central Squash had some successes through the year with the Kawaroa Park D grade men and the Feilding E

grade women winning there respected National SuperChamps teams titles.

I would like to congratulate Grant Watts and Karl Fraser for winning the New Zealand Squash Junior Coach of

the year award.

Looking forward to the coming year I see no improvement in the funding situation, so I see the policies of this

year staying in place. I will not be recommending that we look at replacing the SDO to the board, but we contract

work out as the need arises.

The micro courts are going to become a major problem within the District as they are not being used. We have no

where to store them with some sitting outside where they’re slowly deteriorated to the point that they will be

worth nothing. It is costing us to keep them, so I think that they need to be sold.

For the District to go forward, we need to fill the vacant board positions, especially Marketing Director.

Squash New Zealand is planning some major changes next year that could see the eleven Districts reduced to five.

Central, Eastern and Wellington could become one, something to think about. Along with this, SNZ are also

looking and reviewing the way they collect affiliation levies.

I would like to thank the Board and Sharon for the work they have put in this year, especially under the difficult

circumstances that the District found itself in. Without their help I would hate to say where we would be now. We

have worked through it and look forward to better times.

To the rest of the Squash community have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and hope to see you all

back playing in 2009.

Good squashing 2009

FINANCE DIRECTOR’S REPORT By Jane Gadsby

Another year has passed us by and what a huge year of challenges for the board. At the beginning of the year all programs

run by Central squash were evaluated, we looked at what income each program generated and what the cost of running each

program was. As a result many of the programs became user pays and unfortunately some stopped altogether. The biggest

casualty was the microcourts. As this service was free to the schools and in the previous year it had cost CS in excess of

$8,000 to run, the microcourts were offered to the schools on a user pays basis. Unfortunately not many schools were keen

to pay so this program was almost non existent in the 2008 season.

The tri series & national events were also on a user pays basis. We were fortunate to secure a small amount of funding, so

the amounts paid by individuals participating in theses events weren’t as high as was first thought.

The departure of our SDO Donna Wilson was a huge loss for the district and her enthusiasm for the job & squash in general

will be missed. The only positive to come out of that was that pressure was taken off our already tight budget and we would

not have to find funding to cover her wages over the summer period.

Funding has once again been very difficult to secure and a big thanks must go to Sharon Patterson as she continues to work

hard in this area. Thank you also to the trusts that have supported us this year.

On a positive note, Sport Manawatu continues to fund us through the coaches count program and will carry on into 2009.

The Prince series (both junior & senior) have been successful again this year and we are pleased to have Prince on board

again for 2009. InspireNet continues their sponsorship through into 2009. It has been a very successful year for the

InspireNet squad with all members improving their grades significantly and some gaining national recognition for their

efforts.

Income has dropped once again, mainly due to the loss of the regional development funding and the drop in funding

received from squash NZ. At this point in time we are not sure what form the funding from SNZ will take in the 2009 year

but hopefully the SEMS remain steady which will ensure the funding is similar to last year.

The accounts show a surplus of $9,800 (2007 deficit $3074).The main reasons being the savings on the SDO wages and

the decrease in microcourt costs. We have also managed to keep other costs to a minimum where possible. Our cash

position is reasonably healthy and we have been able to start building up our reserves again with $20,000 invested in UDC.

Debtors collection continues to be a challenge as many clubs have struggled financially during the year. We did however

finally receive the insurance monies for the computer stolen in 2006.

For 2009 & beyond there are many unknowns, funding is certainly not guaranteed for anyone and with SNZ evaluating its

structures & procedures for future years we do not know what the future will hold for the district and clubs in general.

The clubs unanimously voted against an affiliation fee increase last year and given the current climate there will be no

recommended increase for 2009 either. Hopefully the numbers playing squash will stay steady or increase over the next few

years and help keep affiliation fees at the present level.

Have a good summer break & enjoy the 2009 season

Jane Gadsby

Finance Director.
