DESCRIPTION
The Central Region is the administrative body that services sixty-nine local BSA councils in the Great Midwest of the United States . The territory spanned by the Central Region includes council headquarter cities in thirteen states, including all of Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Ohio, Wisconsin, and parts of Indiana, Kentucky, Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota, Virginia, and West Virginia. As a whole, these councils positively influence the lives of over 715,000 registered youth in traditional BSA programs. Included in that figure are over 43,000 Venturers in over 3,600 crews (including Sea Scouts in over 90 ships).

Area 7 Venturing Extravaganza Are all you guys ready for the 3rd annual Area 7 Extravaganza! This year our Extravaganza will be on Saturday October 5th, 2013 at Rainbow Scout Reservation in Morris, Illinois. Registration begins at 8 am and a bonfire will wrap up the day by 9 pm. The cost for those registering before September 27th is $30 per person, after is $35 per person. Lunch and dinner will be provided. This year’s event will have all of the old favorites from years past, such as a wide variety of shooting opportunities including shotgun shooting, archery, and pistol shooting. The Area 7 Venturing Top Shot competition has returned, and the trophy will pass to a new winner....or will it? This year competitors will also have the opportunity to utilize previously unavailable firearms! The extremely fun high COPE course is of course available again. Everyone make sure to register early to ensure a spot. Other returning events include Dutch Oven cooking and climbing. While we have many returning events, do not think that the Extravaganza will be the same as years previous! This year’s theme is the Olympic games, so bring your game face, a competitive spirit, and some friends to help give you a boost in our group competitions. Make sure you’re on the look out because more details on events are to come! Interested in camping? Want to make it a weekend? Camping is available for free to all registered participants for both Friday and Saturday nights. We are so excited to see everyone there and can’t wait to have a blast! You can contact Katlin Adams or Kris Zahrobsky with any questions and/or concerns, or send an email to: [email protected]! Register today at: https://www.threefirescouncil.org/oldsite/component/dtregister/?controller=event&task=options&eventId=191.

National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE) is a leadership course that builds off of National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT). Over the course of a week, participants take the leadership skills they have already learned and apply them to real-world situations. For example, using communication skills, participants might learn proper radio codes and then use those codes during a Search and Rescue exercise. Pictured below, participants created fake skin and fake blood as part of a realistic First Aid exercise that involved developing teamwork skills.
Held at Philmont Scout Ranch and a part of the Philmont Training Center, NAYLE is held at Rayado Ridge Leadership Mesa. The summer of 2013 was the first time NAYLE courses were held here! Participants also get to explore the backcountry of Philmont on an overnight backpacking trip.
Are you interested in attending NAYLE? Pre-requisites include having attended NYLT and holding/having held a Crew leadership position. For more information, go to http://www.philmontscoutranch.org/PTC/YouthPrograms/NAYLE.aspx.

Membership Standard—Implementation Support
This fall, the BSA will release training materials designed to assist councils in communicating policies and guidelines related to the new membership standards.
It is recognized that there is no way the BSA can answer every possible question that may arise. Ultimately, people in leadership positions must exercise good judgment, all the time asking the key question they have always asked: “What is in the best interest of the youth we serve?”
At the heart of the implementation of the new standards is the recognition that as if continue to focus on what is best for youth and we follow our successful youth protection guidelines, implementing the more inclusive membership standards will allow us to continue offering excellent programming to youth.
Guidelines for implementation issues are available through a new BSA website: http://www.scouting.org/Training/Membership_Standards.aspx.
Membership information to support Venturing is available through the Central Region Venturing website: http://crventuring.org/Membership/Overview/.

Hey Central Region!
Fall is here and it’s time for those
great weekend camping trips, but it is
also the most important time of the
year. The fall is a great time for
recruiting new youth in to your crew.
A great way to recruit new youth is to
have an Open House where people
can come and learn all about your
crew. Make it a challenge for current
crew members to have the most
friends there. Have some games ready or a picture slide show
to get people excited about the great program opportunities of
Venturing. An even better way to promote your crew is to use
the Peer to Peer Recruitment Program! You can order the Peer
to Peer packets at http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/
Venturing.aspx for free! This program has multiple handouts
that can help get the word out about your crew, but it also has
brochures on what Venturing is all about. No matter how you
are recruiting it’s important to be doing it year round, but the
fall is a great time to have a big Open House to promote your
crew. Have a great beginning to fall sitting around the campfire
and having great AdVentures!
~Christina Vogt
