The main concern was regarding the stability of the stained glass windows on the south wall, and the effect that months of construction may have them. They contracted with Classic Glass Ltd. to develop a restoration and protection plan for all the windows. The main concern was a massive 40 ft. wide by 20 ft. Tall 110 year old historic window. The existing handcrafted wooden frame was considered to be stable, however the stained glass was in very poor shape due to deferred maintenance. The existing exterior protective lexan was installed in the 1970’s and was exhibiting yellowing and clouding typical of this type of covering. It was determined that the stained glass windows would be removed prior to the construction project, fully restored and completely releaded. The exterior frame is considered to be massive for a custom frame of this type. A heavy duty frame was configured to compliment the existing original frame shape as much as possible. The exterior frame included louvers in the face of the glass to provide necessary ventilation of the inner space, and reduce heat build up. The completed project was remarkable enough to gain the attention of the Saint Paul Heritage Preservation Commission, Saint Paul Chapter of the AIA/ American Institute of Architects.
