Please come and meet Our School Council who will be shar-ing information about how to get involved in our school and about our annual fundraising event called Spookathon—a huge tradition at Central Park at Halloween.

with be here to share informa-tion about staying active in Markham.
Our administration team will be in the front foyer and will be happy to answer questions you may have with regards to cur-riculum, assessment or other concerns.
At Central Park, we believe in working closely with parents and communicating frequently about student progress and issues related to your child. Your children play an important role in this communication. Please ask them to show you their agenda on a nightly basis and look at the work they are bringing home. Teachers will provide feedback to your chil-dren about how they can im-prove their work. This is a valuable tool for you as you sit down to support your children at home. By asking your chil-

dren the following three ques-tions, you can have a good sense of what your children are learn-ing and how you can assist them:
“What are you learn-ing?” (specifically and not just the subject).
“What do you need to do to be successful?” (what are the cri-teria for the assignment that students have been given?)
“What do you need to do to improve?” (what does the feed-back from the teacher say and how can the student use it to improve his/her work? - be-fore the final grade for the unit has been given)
Along with the staff, we look forward to working with you to make this a successful year for your child.

Reporting Absences To ensure the safety of our children, it is critical that
parents contact the school
office, on a daily basis when your
child will be absent or late
for school. The voicemail line is
available 24 hours per day at (905) 940-1444.
If our Safe Arrival is not able to locate information
regarding the student’s
absence in a timely manner,
the York Regional Police
will be contacted. Your child’s safety is
our most important priority.
Healthy Snacks Each fall, parents face the daily challenge of packing healthy lunches that their back-to-school children will enjoy. Lack of time, picky eaters, short lunch periods, and conflicting information on nutrition and food safety are some of the roadblocks that undermine their best intentions.
So, where can parents go to find information they can trust to help them meet the healthy lunch challenge? They can visit the Health Canada web-site and search on Smart Snacking. (www.hc-sc.gc.ca). We are trying very hard at Central Park to teach our students to chose healthy things to eat. Please help us by avoiding sending candy, sugary drinks and foods high in fat and salt to school.
Also, with a convenience store around the corner, some students buy these unhealthy foods all too often and bring them to school. This impacts their ability to focus and achieve to the best of their ability. Treats are fine, but must be consumed in moderation.

TERRY FOX WALK/RUN
On September 24th, Central Park staff and students participated in our an‐nual Terry Fox Walk/Run. The event was a great success ‐ so far we raised almost $1000. We would like to thank our community for their very generous support of such a wor‐thy cause.
We are fortunate to have Mrs. Fakoori, Ms. Mani, and Mrs. Campbell who organized this event. We are grateful to them and to all the staff in helping us to continue student aware‐ness of this Canadian hero and his Marathon of Hope.
WOW BUTTER—AVOID CONFUSION
WOW butter is a peanut butter substitute product that is being mar-keted to consumers as a safe alternative for children to bring to schools in place of peanut butter. We ask that parents DO NOT include this type of product in your child’s lunches or snacks since this product looks, tastes and smells very much like peanut butter. The safety of our students with nut allergies is our first prior-ity and there may be a possibility that peanut butter could be mistaken as this soy-based product.
Thank you for your cooperation in avoiding the use of these products to assist in our continued efforts to create a safe, caring and inclusive learning environment for all students.

FALL FUNDRAISERFRIDAY, OCTOBER 31ST, 2014
A treasured tradition at Central Park, this annual event is the fun-filled fundraising activity for the school. Funds raised from the generous donations of Central Park students, family, friends and community members go towards items that supplement programming, example technology.
Coordinated by parent volunteers and supported by both staff and the Central Park community, students participate in physical activity by enjoying the dance party and are encouraged to dress-up in costume. The students take turns in the gym, where they dance then go to the lunch room for refreshments served by parent volunteers. Spot prizes are also awarded during every dance session. The school community provides raffle prizes which are put on display in front of the office in mid October. Students select which prizes they would like to be eligible to win by placing tickets in 1 or more boxes of their choice. Students receive one raffle ticket for every $5 in pledge money. Character Trait of the Month ~RESPONSIBILITY~
At the end of every month we stop to recognize the character of our students. Each month we focus on one particular character trait and during the whole month we look for students who are ex-emplifying that trait.
Our October Character Matters is RESPONSIBILITY -
“We are accountable for all our actions. We follow through on our commitments.”
