FROM THE FOREST

The Committee wishes all COC members a Happy Christmas and a better New Year.

See you behind the Christmas tree, at control 12.

ORIENTEERING TIP # 9. by Swampsox RESIST EARLY SEARCHING FOR CONTROLS

With relatively difficult controls without collecting lines, where it is sometimes difficult to measure the distance from the direction of approach, it has been found that searching practically always begins too early. It is only natural that you do not wish to run past the control, you therefore become uncertain and commence searching, not having the heart to run the extra 50 or 100 metres actually required.

O r i e n t e e r i n g Hint. Learn pace counting. Find out how many double-steps you

take per 100 metres over various types of terrain. Be mentally flexible; what would the terrain look like if you really had gone too far? This glance at the map 'behind' the control area, which is seldom made, will often show that you cannot possibly be already there; thus you are in front of the control area and you can now run on.

Bulletin Board

Of the forty-four applicants for the Taupo training camp for juniors, the following Central Club members have been selected -

Penny Clendon Darren Ashmore Tony Reddish & Matthew Tuck

Well done! We look forward to seeing great improvements from you all.

A fourth fund-raising "get-together" has been completed. Again this was worth around $700. (I can hear our treasurer counting out his money from here!)

Don't forget the All-night relays in January. Tony Nicholls is co-ordinating teams, so get your name in to him if you are interested.

Enclosed in this newsletter are two Summer Series publicity leaflets. One is for you, and one is for your local dairy or supermarket notice board - thanks.

Please note membership subscriptions are due. Yes, another year has been and gone. Subscription form appears later in this newsletter.

SNIPPETS

Rally driver Stig Blomqvist's co-driver, "Captain" Bjorn Cederberg is retiring at the end of the current season and will probably take up orienteering again! Maybe those Scandinavian navigators are all O-ers, and this accounts for their success. (Source- Auckland Car Club Bulletin)

PRESIDENT'S REPORT - CENTRAL ORIENTEERING CLUB - 1985

Central Club has had a very active year 1) AOA Relays 2) 2 x OYs 3) Primary School Champs 4) The 6 Park events and

the forest event for the Summer Series 5) Our 6 Promotion Park Events 6) And a series of "events' set

for various clubs and organisations. (A total of 4 forest events and 13 park events). To the various setters, organisers and controllers of these events please accept the thanks of the club.

For the coming year we are committed to organising 3 OY's, the A.O.A. Night Champs, the Secondary School Champs, Day 2 of the Milo "7 day" event. Day 2 of the Queen's Birthday W.E., our summer series of 6 park events, and a forest event; and our own club's promotional park events; also the NZOF Championships.

Quite a list really - and shortly we will have to be looking for course setters and controllers etc for these activities.

One of the areas of real concern to me, as President, is the rather uneven spread of responsibilities. This year we have not had an events co-ordinator and I have watched with concern some members almost over-committment to our sport - and the approaching state of "burn out" - we cannot run the risk of losing experienced personnel. For some time now we have owed a great deal to a few Orienteers. Please do consider how you can help the club.

Our "Map" Status Quo is a little tight, with Totara Park, Craigavon Park, Western Springs, Churchill Park, all in various stages of re-mapping. We have no Mangere Mountain maps on hand and our Domain Map is also in need of re-drawing. Our Selwyn Road Map is slowly being cut of trees.

We have planned one new map this year - Self's Farm, Mangere - used for the primary school champs for the first time.

We have 3 major maps ready for field working - Steven's Farm, Quarry Road and Temu Road - two forest maps. We are at the moment awaiting overseas mappers to visit NZ to get these maps completed in time for our major events next year.

The club purchased a Nashua Copier Machine which is hold by our Newsletter Editor. We have repaired the Campomatic flooring and participated with the other two Auckland clubs to purchase a new Map printer.

Phil Brodie and Selwyn Palmer have taken up a new career of tent making -the prototype we saw at Labour week-end.

I would like to thank publicly the following people:-

Terry Nuthal - for his efforts in organising the money ventures we have recently embarked upon.

The Gregorys and Creaghs for the use of their properties for storing club equipment.

Page 5: Central Orienteering Clubarchive.orienteering.org.nz/newsletters/auckland/COC_Dec...and warm form of insulated sleeping pad available The. y hav e been used exclusivel ony man Alpiny

Ray Baker for his untiring work on our club Newsletter.

Selwyn Palmer for his work in keeping our maps up to date.

Eddie Reddish for his work on the club's accounts and membership list.

And of course Jill our secretary - no club can run effectively without a good secretary.

To the members who help out on the day a big thank you is also due. Orienteering is a high labour sport and please do consider assisting with setting, vetting and organising. If you are approached, or wish to have a go - remember - we all had to start somewhere and there's plenty of help and assistance.

Leon McGivern

FIXTURES Two further badge event dates have been confirmed for 1986. These are - C.D.O.A Championships - 17 August, 1986.

Auckland Area Championships - 12 October, 1986. Clubs are reminded that Waitangi Day Weekend -early February, 1987-is still avilable should anyone be interested in organising a a multi-day event.

PROPERTY Clubs are reminded that when hiring videos they must return them promptly to Leo Homes as some one else may be waiting to use them. In some instances they have been kept for as long as two months which is not paricularly satisfactory. It must be remembered also that the fees are payable when orders are placed. The same applies for copies of NZOF Event Rules. A video of the World Championships '85 has been ordered and hopefully this will be available early in the New Year.

O-RINGEN O-Ringen for 1986 will be held in Boras, Seden from 20-25 July. Entry forms for this event are available from the NZOF Secretary.

ORIENTEERING PUBLICATIONS The Canadian Orienteering Federation has advised of the publica-tion of two new Training Manuals. They are "Orienteering Skills and Strategies" and "Orienteering Training and Performance". The first is available now and an order from is attached. The other is expected to be available about mid-1986.

N.Z.O.F. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The Federation's next Annual General Meeting will be held in Taupo on Monday 31 March, 1986. This is Easter Monday and follows the conclusion of the Taupo Club's 3-day event the previous day. Venue details will be advised later. In the meantime nominations are sought for the positions of

President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer together with sub-Committee convenors. Any remits or rule changes are also required to be given to me in writing. Closing date for these is 27 January, 1986.

Finally I would like to wish you all on behalf of the Management Committee a Merry Christmas and the very best in Orienteering for 1986.

Colin Tait Secretary.

"INGLEWOOD" YOUR HOST TOWN FOR EASTER 1985 Inglewood is a historic gold mining town on the edge of the "Golden Triangle" approximately forty (40)

ks. north of Bendigo on the Calder Highway. The Township was established in the early 1800's and consists of many interesting early Victorian buildings and still retains its old world charm, supporting the local farm communities.

Whilst Inglewood Township is small its structure supports a hospital, two resident doctors, ambulance service, fire brigade (urban and C.F.A.) a strong religious community with three Churches, R.C., C of E, and Uniting, two Primary Schools, State and R.C., a Community Health Centre, Elderly Citizens Club, Kindergarten and Sporting Complex including swimming pool, lawn tennis courts, bowling green and golf club. Nearby, within a few kilometres is fresh water fishing and water ski-ing.

The local district retains a great deal of its natural beauty. The temperate climate, low rainfall and fertile soil ensures an ideal place for growing grain, fruit, cattle and sheep. It has vast state forests of eucalypt, stringy bark and iron bark trees and our local fauna and flora give pleasure for bush walkers and tourists.

Within our boundaries are industrial gold mining complexes which are functioning today whilst amateur gold prospecting is a very popular tourist past time. Metal detectors are available on hire from a local store.

For the tourist we boast of our scenic Melville Caves, vast State Forests, Water Ski-ing on the Loddon, Eucalyptus farms and stills. Wineries with wine grown from local grapes, these are open to the public.

WEATHER PREDICTIONS: Our farming community has been asked to predict weather for Easter 1986. 75% predict that weather will be fine (dry). They are normally reliable (they also predicted our current 1985 drought) The other 25% predicted showers on at least one day, perhaps two.
