INTRODUCTION
A reference guide to operatic repertory in the United States has long been overdue. Inresponse to repeated inquiries, Central Opera Service is now filling this void with thepublication of this unique Directory.
Intended primarily as a guide to opera producers, OPERA REPERTORY U.S.A. shouldserve as an inspiration to those looking for rarely performed operas and offer amplesuggestions to those seeking popular works.
Surveying operatic activity from 1966 to 1972, the Directory lists operas in order of thetotal number of performances, showing the popularity of works at a glance, while alsoidentifying those operas which have been heard only once or twice during this period. Those performed more than ten times are recorded with yearly breakdowns.
The entries are divided into two categories. List A features operas predating 1930, ListB contemporary works premiered after 1930. All operas in List A still covered bycopyright law in the U.S. are specifically identified (#) . (Of course, all operas on ListB are protected under copyright law.) This marks the first time that this information hasbeen made available in such concise form. Further, the lists indicate operas suitable forprogramming on double-bills (*), hopefully inspiring alternatives to the standardcombinations of Cav & Pag and Telephone & Medium. List A is also cross-referencedalphabetically by composer, with the works identified by the number of performances.
In order to make this Directory a source of maximum information, for music educatorsand opera producers alike, we have devoted the second section of Opera RepertoryU.S.A. to DIRECTORIES OF CHILDREN'S OPERAS and of CHRISTMAS OPERAS.The listing of operas for children identifies operas for kindergarten and primary gradeschool audiences (*), for kindergarten and primary grade school performers (**),and for Jr. or Sr. High School performers (#) . Those not annotated are for middleschool through High School audiences with adult or mixed performers.
Finally, the second section includes a basic list of works from the general repertorysuggested for young audiences. Selection will obviously depend on the age and sophisti-cation of the young people as well as on the attitude of the producer. Some operas havebeen included for their popular melodies, others for their lively stage action, bothimportant factors in holding the attention of youthful listeners. Space limitations dictatedthe length of this list.
With the publication of this Directory, Central Opera Service continues its policy ofoffering its members one unique reference work annually as the Special Winter Issueof the COS Bulletin. Begun in 1966, the Directory Series consists of:
English Translations of Foreign Language Operas (1966)Directory of American Contemporary Operas (1967)American Premiers 1962-68; Awards for Singers (1968)Directory of Foreign Contemporary Operas (1969)Directory of Sets and Costumes for Rent, Opera Companies & Other Sources (1970)Directory of Opera Companies & Workshops in the U.S. & Canada (1971)
We thank our readers as well as other authorities in the musical field for their manyfavorable comments on the usefulness of our publications. Hopefully, this latest volumewill again prove to be of assistance to musicians, administrators, teachers, and audiencesand thus further the popularity of and enthusiasm for opera in the United States.
This introduction would not be complete without grateful acknowledgment of the yeomanwork done by Opera News in surveying opera companies.
