Welcome to Memorial Park for the first home games of the season for our Grant Plumbing Petone 1st and 2nd teams. A particular welcome to Napier City Rovers and Miramar Rangers plus their coaching staff, management teams and supporters.

After weeks of delay, frustration and disruption the new artificial turf is finally ready and does look very impressive. I know artificial turf pitches are not everyone’s cup of tea however, like it or not, they have a big part to play in the future of football in this region. We’d all love a Park Island or David Farrington Park on our doorstep but with quality surfaces at a real premium in Wellington, I’m sure this turf will prove very popular with all Petone teams and their opposition.

After a difficult opening game, the Reserve team had a good win last week but will need to be at their very best again to beat a strong Miramar side. While good football continues to be played, a tough season last year may have been the best thing to happen to this young squad. I’m sure the lessons learned will have toughened up the lads and made them stronger for the season ahead.

With a couple of upsets happening in Central League already, the 1st team will be eager to get points on the board. You couldn’t get a tougher start with Miramar, Olympic and now last season’s champions Napier City Rovers as our first three games! Nothing like being fully tested early on! We played very well at Miramar but simply didn’t take our chances and then last week, despite being outplayed by Olympic, still missed a few decent opportunities and went down 1-3. The quality is definitely there but we must be more ruthless in front of goal, especially against the very best teams and especially at home.

Thanks for supporting both teams and good luck to Fozzie and Sambo and all other Petone teams for this weekend’s games. Remember to play hard but play fair.

Sue joined the club in 1972 as a junior player and, the following year, as a 15 year old, she was a member of the club’s first women’s team playing in the Wellington Women’s Football Association competition. She was in the 1st team through until 1980.

She joined the club’s Women’s Committee in 1976 for three years, during which time she served as Secretary in 1977.

From 1981, she helped manage one of our junior teams for three years. After producing two sons, Sue returned to playing in 1990 and continued through until 2000. The highlight of her playing career was receiving a Kelly Cup winner’s medal in 1993.

From 1992, Sue was very much involved with fundraising efforts for the Hutt Valley Junior representative teams in which her sons played, and then for the Petone under 19s until 2003. During this time she was meals-coordinator for three years, but she effectively continued her efforts over many years and was a very helpful contributor as recently as at last year’s Napier tournament.

She joined the Supporters’ Club Committee in 1995 and was involved in many of that Committee’s fund raising efforts through until 2006, regularly running meat and cash raffles in the clubrooms after 1st team home games.

She was elected onto the management committee in 1997, and also undertook recording secretary functions at the meetings. She assiduously took minutes of all club management committee meetings and these minutes were normally in our email systems very early the next morning, such was her efficiency. In 2004 the position of Recording Secretary was formalised as a Club officer and Sue was duly elected to that position. She continued in the position until the end of 2009.

Sue has made a huge contribution to the club in a variety of roles which are vastly time-consuming and more often than not involve commitment at times when others are playing, watching or enjoying themselves in the clubrooms. These roles included about ten years of managing and serving in the Tuck Shop; some eight years as Assistant Bar Manager; several years of running and serving in the kitchen in the clubrooms which is essential to retention of our liquor licence; and some years of laundering the 1st team’s strip.

And it didn’t stop there. Sue spent years in helping to cater for our various events and for visiting teams to the clubrooms, running sausage sizzles, providing meals for referees during the Hilton-Petone Tournament, and particularly in generally cleaning up after everyone else.

Sue has selflessly filled so many gaps in the business of keeping our club and clubrooms ticking along that it has always been difficult to imagine what we would have done without her.

Club members recognised her outstanding contribution in awarding her Life Membership in 2008, the first woman in the club to be accorded the honour.

It is pleasing to see that since then she has carried on her efforts over a range of roles, especially in the clubrooms. Wouldn’t it be good to see her being able to sit down for a while, if only people would help by clearing their tables themselves!

The club has grown from strength to strength since then. Once upon a time players left Napier to join bigger clubs and increase their chances of gaining full international honours by being selected for the NZ All Whites. How times have changed as now Napier find themselves as a stepping stone for players to gain NZ All White or NZ Under 23 honours, such has been the success of the team over the last 20 odd years. Boasting a ground and administration set-up second to none in New Zealand, with constant results leading to League and Cup honours, Napier have been able to attract top players from around the country, as well as pushing through real talent to keep Napier at the top of the ladder in New Zealand Football.

It is with a great deal of pleasure that I respond to the request to contribute a few words to the programme for this auspicious week. Having watched the redevelopment of Memorial Park out of my window for the last six months, to get to this day certainly makes one feel good. I can only imagine what it must be like for Petone members past and present.

Artificial turfs are not the panacea for all ills but they do have a significant place within football and I am delighted that Capital Football and Petone have partnered in this development. I would like to thank Craig Deadman, Barry Pickering and John Bradbury in their working with Capital Football so that both parties are happy with the outcome - respect as to each other’s points of view was central to that.

I wish you a great day; Bob and I will be there and I look forward to seeing you there.

Well well I feel like I’ve said this a few times but today we WILL be playing on the new artificial pitch! It’s been a bit drawn out, a bit stop start but we have arrived and that’s all that matters. Good things take time, there is no denying that. Like making the perfect cheese scone. You can’t just be flinging the ingredients all over the shop and then launching them into the oven for 2 minutes. It’s got to be caressed, nurtured and given the respect a cheese scone always deserves. You think butter wants to go on a sub-standard scone? It doesn’t. So would players want to be playing on a sub-standard pitch? No. See I’ve just summed it all up with the help of god’s gift to the bakery - Scones! I recently joined the Petone Management Committee so I could start giving back to the club and being involved. Me and my mentor Kristy Whalen are the events team. We are cooking up some great functions for the club this year. Up first we have the Quiz Nite on May 18th. Alongside my dear friends Benn Dawson & Richard McLay we will host a quiz night that could quite possibly blow your socks off. Benn in particular has been scouring the internet for all kinds of questions. I don’t think he ever studied this hard when at school. Rich is as usual coming up with lots of crazy ideas and it’s going to be fun to see what we finally come up with. Rich’s main question he wants to put in is “How many cats are there in the world?”... It’s causing a lot of arguments between the 3 of us. Anyway make sure you register your team and we will see you there!

Being on the Management Committee has been a real eye opener. There are honestly some people giving their heart and soul to this club, it’s very inspiring. Grant Plumbing Petone have had a tough start with a couple of losses, albeit against two very strong teams. They will be hoping to get a better result today against the defending champions Napier. It’s shaping up as a very competitive league so points at home will be crucial to pick up. So enjoy the day and here’s hoping we see a great game on the fancy new turf that ends in a Petone victory. Go the blues!
