Concert Band With a dual career as a performer and conductor, David J. Martins balances orchestral and chamber venues with an active teaching and conducting schedule. He is the Music Director of the Boston University Wind Ensemble and is an Adjunct Professor of Music. In 2013 the ensemble released its first recording of Ketty Nez’s Piano Concerto entitled Thresholds on Ravello Records and in 2014 premiered the wind ensemble transcription of John Williams’ Tuba Concerto with Mike Roylance, tubist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Martins is the newly appointed Music Director of the Rivers Conservatory Youth Wind Ensemble. He is Professor Emeritus of the University of Massachusetts Lowell, Department of Music, where he was the Wind Ensemble Director and clarinet faculty for 35 years. He was a Berkshire Music Festival Tanglewood Fellow and holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music and the University of Lowell, College of Music. Professor Martins is the founding music director of the Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensembles where he was the conductor of the senior division from 2002- 2012 and conducted the ensemble at Carnegie

Hall. Mr. Martins is Music Director Emeritus of the Metropolitan Wind Symphony, which during his tenure of ten years performed at the National Conference of the Association of Concert Bands and commissioned numerous new compositions. During the past several years, he has been in demand as a guest conductor and has conducted Festival ensembles throughout the Eastern United States.

Orchestra Dr. David Upham is the orchestra conductor at the University of New Hampshire, and the founding director and conductor of the UNH Youth Symphony Orchestras. Prior to his arrival in New England, he was active in Seattle, Washington, as a conductor of professional, community, and student ensembles, serving as the Music Director of the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra and director of the Young Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra at the Seattle Conservatory of Music. Dr. Upham also conducted with the Rainier Symphony Orchestra, various professional ballet orchestras, and was a featured guest conductor at the Northwest Mahler Festival. In November of 2009, he made his international debut at the contemporary music festival, Aujourd’hui Musiques, in Perpignan, France. Dr. Upham conducted the New Hampshire All-State Orchestra in April 2012. Dr. Upham appears frequently as an educator and clinician at festivals across the country, leading orchestras every summer at the Summer Youth Music School at UNH, and at the Lutheran Summer Music Academy in the Midwest. He had a long tenure with the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestras, serving as conductor or assistant with each of the

organization’s five orchestras. Dr. Upham also had a successful 10-year career as a public school music educator, leading orchestral programs in Kent and Bellevue, WA. In his position at Newport High School, he developed a thriving program with 120 string students across 3 orchestras, who consistently won top awards at various music festivals throughout the region. Dr. Upham has degrees from Luther College, the University of Northern Colorado, and received his DMA in conducting from the University of Washington.

Jazz Ensemble Richard Falco joined the music faculty of Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1979 where he holds the position of Director of Jazz Studies. The WPI Stage Band and WPI Jazz Ensemble embrace their role as international jazz ambassadors. Under Falco’s direction, they have performed in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Russia, Romania, the Czech Republic, Austria, Egypt, Spain, Greece, Canada, Italy, Poland, Hungary and the United States. Falco has been interviewed by "A Tout Jazz" for National Public Radio of France, and has been invited to lecture and perform at several music schools while touring abroad. He was the co-founder and Artistic Director of the Jazz Worcester Music Festival and a past president of the Jazz Worcester Society. Falco holds the position of Jazz Historian and is a board member for the Massachusetts Association for Jazz Education (MAJE) and a member of the College of Voters for the New England Jazz Alliance (NEJA). An active teacher and performer, Falco has received several awards including the Henry

"Boots" Mussulli Jazz Educator of the Year award and the Jazz at Sunset Festival Award for “consistently creative jazz performances”. In 2006 Falco became the twelfth recipient of the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Association for Jazz Education. With a keen interest in community outreach, Falco has formed a collaboration with the Worcester Public Schools and Mechanics Hall Association and serves as the Music Director and Narrator for "Conversations in Jazz: Brown Bags for Kids", an annual production of Mechanics Hall Association. This program reaches 2,000 school children in grades 3 through 6. During his time at WPI, Falco has produced and presented more than 100 exciting programs of internationally acclaimed jazz artists on the WPI campus for clinics, workshops and concerts, including such luminaries as Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Lovano, Clark Terry, Sun Ra, Cyrus Chestnut, Marcus Roberts, Gary Burton and Pat Metheny.

Chorus

Jamie Hillman is a multi-faceted musician who is active as a singer, pianist, conductor, music educator, and composer. He serves as an assistant professor of music at Gordon College in Wenham, MA, where he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in music education, and directs the Gordon College Choir and Men's Choir. As a Boston University Prison Arts Scholar and faculty member of BU's Metropolitan College/Prison Education Program, he has co-initiated a thriving music and arts program at a large, medium-high security men's prison. His recent engagements as tenor soloist include Messiah with Clark University Chorus & Orchestra, Nathaniel Dett's The Chariot Jubilee with Nathaniel Dett Chorale and Windsor Classic Chorale, Saint Säens' Christmas

Oratorio with Rosebud Masterworks Choir, Haydn's The Creation with Laudate Dominum Choir & Orchestra, and Haydn's Nelson Mass with Studio Cantorum Choir & Orchestra (Indonesia). As a pianist, Dr. Hillman has shared the stage with numerous choirs including Boston Children's Chorus and Rhode Island Children's Chorus, and professional singers including Desiree Hassler, Kevin McMillan, and Katherine Whyte. His choral compositions have been performed in Asia, Europe, and North America by ensembles including the Amadeus Choir of Greater Toronto, Boston Children's Chorus, Calgary Girls Choir, Cantabile Choirs of Kingston, Oakville Children's Choir, Worcester Children's Chorus, and numerous other school, church, and community choirs. Dr. Hillman holds an associate diploma from the Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto), and degrees from the University of Western Ontario (London, Canada), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Boston University. He is the 2012 laureate of the Leslie Bell Prize for Choral Conducting from the Ontario Arts Council.
