Jan 11 2017 TINKUY IN CUSCO PERU ~ Patricia Martin will present a visual recap of her recent trip to Cusco, Peru for the 2017 Tinkuy -- a special event which means “gathering” in the Quechua language. Patricia will discuss the colors, patterns and textures of the traditional clothing that is worn as identifiers by the indigenous Peruvian people. She will share the people’s inspirational stories of success, their traditions and their young people’s visions for the future. Patricia also will discuss how we as global citizens can participate and support their ancient history. Feb 8 CENTRO DE TEXTILE TRADICIONALES DEL CUSCO ~ As a follow-up to last month’s program, Jennifer Moore will discuss her experience in working with the CTTC - Centro de Textile Tradicionales del Cusco -- on a double weave project that was just completed. Like Patricia Martin, Jennifer attended the Tinkuy gathering in Cusco, Peru in November. Jennifer is presenting a workshop on double weave in February – see page 2. Jan 11 2017 TINKUY IN CUSCO PERU ~ Patricia Martin will present a visual recap of her

recent trip to Cusco, Peru for the 2017 Tinkuy -- a special event which means “gathering” in the Quechua language. Patricia will discuss the colors, patterns and textures of the traditional clothing that is worn as identifiers by the indigenous Peruvian people. She will share the people’s inspirational stories of success, their traditions and their young people’s visions for the future. SPINNING MEETINGS

The Spinners meet every Tuesday morning from 9:30 - 12:30, at the Strawbale Barn Weaving Studio, Atascadero. Call Rosemary or Kay Thorne for directions, 438-5501. Anyone wishing to learn to spin may join the group for informal instruction.

A $1.00 per visit donation is requested to help defray the cost of firewood, utilities and hotdrinks.

STUDY GROUP

This group reforms every January and will be open to new members through the March meeting. Meetings are held in member’s homes from 10:00 – 12:00; usually on the third Thursday of the month.

January 18, Meet at Betty Polansky’s home, 836 Ballard Canyon Road, Solvang. This is

the meeting where we decide what we will study for the year. Come prepared to promote your topic.

February 15, Topic and location to be announced.

SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS: These groups are for our members who are interested in

more specialized topics and want to meet with other like-minded weavers to share their knowledge and experience. Meeting times and locations vary throughout the year.

The Tapestry S.I.G.:If you are doing tapestries or interested in this weaving style, please

come and join us. Contact Cindy Gaulin, 805-459-9361 or [email protected], for more information. Next meeting will be on Feb 17th at Joan’s home in Nipomo.

The Rigid Heddle S.I.G. meets the 2nd Tues of the month, 1-3pm at the Strawbale Barn.

Garment Construction S.I.G. ~ If you are interested in improving your sewing skills and

DOUBLE RAINBOW WORKSHOP with Jennifer Moore2 Layers, 4 Shafts, 6 Colors – Infinite Possibilities

February 9 – 11, 2018 at the Strawbale Barn

Weave what is perhaps the ultimate color sampler! Begin at home by winding a 6-color warp and setting up your loom according to Jennifer's system. Then during the workshop, you’ll weave a basic two-layered structure creating an amazing array of color mixtures. Asyou weave and your warp colors move past each other you will experience a visual feast of iridescence and moiré patterns. We will also experiment with single-layered structures such as warp rep and warp-faced twills and the effects that they create on this versatile warp. Weaving this sampler will provide a remarkable education in color theory and how

optical mixtures work in weaving, as well as a great source of inspiration for future weaving projects.

Students will bring a 4-shaft table or floor loom warped according to instruction provided. This workshop is full, but you can contact Diane Ayers, 805-234-1983 or [email protected] to get on a waiting list.

STAY TUNED: Kathrin Weber will be doing a weaving workshop in April; more about this

in the next “Draft” or talk to Diane for more information. This workshop is also full,

but Diane is establishing a waiting list.

2017-18 GUILD CHALLENGE ~ The challenge this time is to weave or create a colorful

scarf at least 70” long using the three initials of our guild name, Central Coast Weavers and the Color Chart below. You must use 2 “C” colors and 1 “W” color; you can use additional colors if you like. Plan to show off your scarf at the June picnic meeting.

NOTICES & ANNOUNCEMENTS

CONVERGENCE 2018 ~ The Handweavers Guild of America, Inc. will present Convergence,

on July 6-12, 2018, at the Peppermill Resort, in Reno. The list of teachers and classes is now up on the Convergence website, http://www.weavespindye.org/convergence-2018 Registration opened on December 6. If you're planning to go, you need to make hotel reservations NOW.

CNCH SCHOLARSHIP GRANTS: There are two CNCH grants: one of $1,000 and the

other of $500. The Grant Application form can be found on the CNCH web site at http://www.cnch.org/conferences/convergence-2018/ . It is due by January 15, 2018.

CENTRAL COAST WEAVER CONVERGENCE GRANT ~ The guild will award $300 to one

lucky first time Convergence attendee to help defray expenses. You must first register for Convergence 2018, and then apply to Karen Wiley in writing (email is ok)before March 1. Selection will be made by blind drawing from the eligible applicants.

A member who has been awarded one of the CNCH Convergence grants will not be eligible for the guild grant. BUT, you can apply for a $100 stipend from our own “Teach-it-Forward” grant program in addition to this award – see form on the guild web site.

COMPLEX WEAVERS SEMINARS ~ Complex Weavers will present their 2018, biennial

seminars on July 10 – 13, at the Peppermill Resort in Reno. There will be fabulous speakers, fashion show, the CW silent auction, marketplace, and, of course, Seminars. There are 29 two-hour seminar sessions from which to choose, with topics covering a widerange of interests and appealing to all skill levels. FLAX TO LINEN PROJECT IN CHICO ~ A coalition of Chico weavers and agriculturalists

CENTRAL COAST WEAVER TEACH-IT-FORWARD GRANT PROGRAM ~ A number of grants

of up to $100 each are available to guild members to further the education and awarenessof weaving and spinning at any skill level. They are available to guild members for their own advancement or for teaching children or adults. DRAFT OF THE MONTH – Jan/Feb 20184 Color Echo Weave on 4-shafts

Use 4 colors in the warp and one color in the weft for both pattern and tabby shots. Weft should be ½ the size of the warp – for example with 5/2 warp, use 10/2 weft. Sett the warp more densely than you normally would – for example, sett 5/2 cotton at 24 epi.
