Castellon on Fire Claims Subrogation at May CCCAThe re-launch of the Central Coast Claims Association May 15, 2015 was deemed a very successful "new beginning". Ulises Castellon, CPCU RPA, with Fire Cause Analysis, brought his engaging style as the instructor for his two hour continuing ed.-accredited presentation on fire claim subro-gation. Ulises said "the bottom line comes from the film Jerry Mc Quire: "Show me the Money".Castellon’s presentation included a funny, insightful, telling slide-show of a case study that clearly demonstrated the need for thorough and properly handled fire investigation efforts. The fire in the slide-show appeared to be an electrical in origin, only to be proved that things are not always what they appear to be. He spoke about “the bible” of the industry: NFPA 921 - a Guide for Fire Explosion Investigation. www.nfpa.org.

By Lynna Harrison, Association News Network, Inc.

NFPA 921 sets the bar for scientific-based in-vestigation and analysis of fire and explosion incidents. Attendees were given an example of a large residential fire loss. Ulises pointed out all the reasons to suspect arson. The house had a “for sale” in the front yard, for example. The home was owned by a neurosurgeon who had built this home as a duplex for his Mother-in-law to live in one side, with a duplicate side adjacent. The two sides were connected by a joint living space. The mother-in-law became involved with the Project Manager, who then moved-in with her. Thereafter, the son-in-law (doctor) moved out and puts the house up for sale. It was a very entertaining tale, leaving one to surmise potential nefarious actions. The fire origin was traced to the Grandma's Art Studio. Castellon described in detail the methods and importance of locating the origin before determining the source of the fire. A thorough fire investigation, which required pain-staking work sifting through piles of debris for weeks, revealed that a custom ornamental tube fireplace with a gas leak was to blame for the fire. There was no arson after all. The Fire Investigation team built a model of the room they then burned to help determine origin. In the end, a legitimate subrogation claim against manufacturer was established.Nearly everyone stayed throughout the two hour session. Those requiring CE credits received documentation of two units. The re-launch effort for the Central Coast Claims Association was deemed a successful start, with 22 people in attendance. Following a June 18th CE course/luncheon on Ethics, the group will take a social outing break for a night at an A’s game in July.Support for this group is on the rise!

Ethics for the Adjuster3 hour CE luncheon course at June 18, 2015 CCCA

Join The Central Coast Claims Association for our next luncheon meeting, Thursday, June 18, 2015 for an accred-ited CE Course on Ethics. The session will run from 12pm-3pm, including our regular luncheon the first hour.

The premise for this ethics course is that, though we may have solid ethical foundations and are capable of making rational ethical decisions, our

ethical lapses are likely to come when we are stressed, angry, upset, worried, or otherwise disengaged.

Ms. Griffith explains, “Each and every day we are faced with decisions that we make that could cause harm to others, or ourselves. Facing ethical decisions can be very difficult, especially with the types of decisions that may seem correct at first, but we later find out were not so great. As we explore what ethics is.

“I will also challenge you to be prepared to become involved in hourly group activities. The group activities will help reinforce what we have learned, and also give us the ability to better deal with ethical decisions making in our own lives.”

Come for the luncheon and stay throughout, or leave early as needed. Full course must be completed to receive DOI Continuing Education credits.

Enroll now at CentralCoastClaims.org.

“Each and every day we are faced with decisions that we make that could
