DB2 FOR z/OS

“Using Native SQL Procedures to Create DBA Building Blocks” Damon Anderson

Anixter Inc. DBA processes are often complex and trouble will ensue if the steps are not followed properly. By using Native SQL Procedures for DBA processes, we have improved our efficiency and productivity. We have been able to put the logic of many DBA processes into SQL Procedures. This has allowed all of our DBAs to perform processes that they may only be somewhat familiar with. The goal of this presentation is not to have you use our processes, but to provide enough information to inspire you to automate some of your processes.

“DB2 11 Expanded RBA/LRSN – Does This Bit Make My Tail Look Big?” Jim Dee

BMC Software DB2 has had a 6 byte RBA since the beginning and a 6 byte LRSN since DB2 Version 4. IBM is introducing the ability to optionally expand the RBA and LRSN to 10 bytes in DB2 11. This change will have fairly far reaching implications on many DB2 structures that have carried a 6 byte RBA since the beginning over 30 years ago. This presentation will raise some of those implications by discussing where RBA values currently reside in the DB2 universe. Details of old versus new formats will be provided. The source of the presentation title? Every page on a DB2 object, both table and index spaces, ends in a structure called PGTAIL. In the expanded world, this becomes PGBIGTAIL.

“A DB2 Workload Tuning Methodology” Jim Dee

BMC Software Instead of tuning your SQL one statement at a time, why not look to the advantages of tuning an entire workload of SQL instead? Workload SQL tuning can not only provide faster returns on the investment in tuning time and effort but will usually provide bigger savings of cpu and other resources. Workload tuning can also avoid the unfortunate “Silly Putty” situation where improving the performance of one SQL statement can have

unexpected detrimental effects elsewhere! Apart from tactical emergency corrections to individual SQL statements, workload SQL tuning should be the preferred mechanism to ensure that application SQL and the underlying database design work together in the most efficient way possible This presentation walks through a typical workload tuning methodology

“DB2 z/OS Cloning – What’s new and faster?” Ulf Heinrich

Director of Solutions Delivery, SOFTWARE ENGINEERING GmbH There are many reasons to clone DB2 environments, like for development, DR testing, QA, audit or just to set up a new SAP environment. Cloning procedures aren’t rocket science, but using the right procedure can make it a one knob process that even handles terabytes of data in a fraction of time. This presentation focuses on creating an exact copy of a full subsystem/data sharing group or a subset of objects and shows how to consistently duplicate objects/ without compromising availability. Implementing fast dataset rename steps and your own high speed DSNTIAD can make even a fresh copy of large ERP/CRM systems like SAP available in minutes. Working on the object level should consider any kind of naming conversion for DB2 objects, working on the subsystem/data sharing group level usually requires to clone into another subsystem or group ID. Non data sharing to data sharing and vice versa can be covered with some extra steps as well as cross DB2 version cloning. The goal is fully automating cloning scenarios including individual steps. See how easy and flexible cloning can be when exploiting the strengths of XML even for complex scenarios and get introduced to the powerful features your storage technology offers to make it highly efficient and incredibly fast! Ulf Heinrich is the Director of Solutions Delivery at SOFTWARE ENGINEERING GmbH. Ulf's specialties are DB2 availability and performance, focusing on the growing requirement for 24x7 operations and cost reduction. As a consultant at large customer sites, he has implemented database maintenance procedures and recovery strategies, and also experienced the pitfalls of recovery scenarios under real world recovery pressure. Ulf's activities cover EMEA, as well as North America through SE’s U.S. subsidiary, SEGUS Inc.

“Where is the Problem in My z/OS Transaction? James Martin

FUNDI Software Is it a DB2 problem? DBAs always hear this question. In fact, today’s complex z/OS environments involve many subsystems such as CICS, DB2, IMS, and WebSphere MQ. Some problems do not clearly indicate their origin. For example, IMS or CICS users might report slow response time, but to solve the problem, you may need to correlate DB2 with other measurement data across subsystems to discover the root cause. This presentation looks at the available sources of performance and log data both inside and outside of DB2, and describes the value of this data for forensic transaction analysis, problem determination and tuning. James has been working for FUNDI Software, an IBM Preferred Development Business Partner, for 8 years. James is an ASTQB Certified Tester, and has held various testing roles for FUNDI including a 2 year stint as the Test Lead for IMS Problem Investigator product. In his current role as a United States Representative, James travels to various

"Converting IMS to DB2 at Anixter." Bernie O'Conner

Anixter Inc. Converting IMS to DB2 was a goal at Anixter before I was hired twenty years ago. We tried dual programming techniques, replication and, finally, DL/2: a solution that required minimal application code changes. Application programs think they are talking to IMS, but they are actually talking to DB2 through the DL/2 APIs. Future programs will use DB2 directly, while the older ones will continue to run with the vanilla IMS code using the DL/2 APIs. As for porting the IMS segments, some are being moved over "as is" while others are being converted from character into data types such as Date and Integer. We used UDFs for specialized conversions, including windowing techniques. We are into our Quality Environment, with a Production Date no later than September 30. This presentation includes Design decisions, Migration decisions, Application rules, JCL changes, Sparsing routines, GSAM files, and other milestones on the way to accomplishing our goals. Bernie O'Connor is Director of Information Technology at Anixter Inc., a leading global distributor with three major lines of business: Enterprise Cabling and Security, Fasteners, Electrical and Electronic Wire & Cable. Bernie has responsibility for Data Analysts, Data Services, Data Warehousing, Technical Architecture, and Web Services: Web Servers, App Servers, Messaging Servers. Bernie is an IBM Champion, IDUG Volunteer, a former North American Conference Chair, former President of IDUG, and an IDUG Hall of Fame Speaker.

“Modernizing IMS Applications the JDBC Way” Deepak Kohli

IBM USA, SVL The rate of change in the IT world means that businesses are in a near-constant cycle of adaptation and modernization; there's never a dull moment. If you thought otherwise, Deepak Kohli will help you to see things differently. Deepak brings his wit and wisdom to the topic of Application Modernization and IMS. Open Access technologies for IMS, supported in part by its JDBC capabilities, have helped businesses modernize their IMS applications for more than a decade now. Deepak will share how the IMS JDBC support circle continues to widen with each release. He will highlight specific client use cases and touch on IMS modernization strategies to come, including Mobile. Deepak Kohli is a Senior Software Engineer at IBM's Silicon Valley lab. Currently, he is part of the IMS Product management team helping customers modernize and SOA-enable their IMS systems. Deepak also provides IMS Level 2 technical support specializing in IMS On Demand and TM areas. He has a Masters in Computer Science from NYU. In the area of IMS, Deepak's experience ranges across applications, DBA, Systems, performance tuning and problem determination. He has taught various IMS and DB2 courses. His presentations have won him rave reviews at conferences worldwide.

“Are You Afraid of Your IMS System?” James Martin

FUNDI Software There are so many things that control your IMS systems that it can be a frightening experience to have to make changes to things such as parameter members and resource definitions. Many of these were setup years ago by someone that is no longer with your company. Come and hear how the IMS Configuration Manager can remove much of the risk associated with changing these parameters and resources. Using ICM you can accomplish the things you need to be able to manage your IMS systems across multiple IMSPLEX’s. If you need to add a new feature, change an existing one

or just understand what options are available to you for your current systems, ICM is the tool you need. Come see how the Auto Discovery feature and SYSPLEX wide compare capabilities allow you to make sure your changes have the highest potential for success. Quickly find out if there are any related parameter members and/or keywords related to the one you are considering change. Make your approach to managing IMS Resource definitions version agnostic and easily deploy the changes using either IMS Systems Generation or IMS Dynamic Resource Definition. And it’s not just for the IMS control region stuff. It covers IMS Connect and all the supporting IMS regions such as OM and RM as well. James has been working for FUNDI Software, an IBM Preferred Development Business Partner, for 8 years. James is an ASTQB Certified Tester, and has held various testing roles for FUNDI including a 2 year stint as the Test Lead for IMS Problem Investigator product. In his current role as a United States Representative, James travels to various conferences and customers in North America, South America, Europe, and Australia for speaking engagements and Product Technical Support. James is also one of the IMS Project Managers for the SHARE Technology Conference.
