Nine faculty/staff attended Pam Sukalski’s presentation on Database Technology held 10/4/2010 at the Luverne Center. This presentation helped to meet goal #2, as all attending expressed that they had learned something about accessing LARC resources online that they did not know before. Pizza was served for lunch. 3. On 11/23/2010, CTL hosted a speaker to address goal #3 of enhancing diversity awareness among our faculty and staff. Eighteen people came to hear a very moving and educational presentation by one of our Minnesota West students, Rick Flute-Player. Rick spoke and shared a video that further explained his Native American heritage and the history of the Pipestone National Monument. Reviews were excellent. Sub sandwiches were served for lunch.

1. Eighteen faculty & staff attended the session on Mental Health/Conflict Resolution on 1/7/2011. Our speaker, Danielle Frazier, discussed a variety of mental health disorders and conflict resolution related to specific situations. This information is useful for faculty and staff in dealing with student mental health issues. She left the book, “How To Get Along With Difficult People” for faculty/staff to read if desired. Pizza was provided for lunch in both Pipestone and Luverne, and reviews were positive. 2. Seven faculty attended John Dahle’s information sharing session on Home Performance Auditing – Equipment & Procedures. John has attended formal training on this topic to bring back to Minnesota West. He will use it in the Carpentry curriculum here as well as in classes MN West will offer to other high school and college educators. With grant money, John was able to purchase equipment needed for Home Performance Auditing. Faculty benefited from being able to view the equipment, reminding us of how important

the visual aids and “hands-on learning” are to technical education. He also demonstrated a great example of how pursuing grant money to help fund programs can be very worthwhile. The information that John presented was useful to all, whether enhancing teaching strategies or applying it to our own homes. Pizza and pop were served for lunch. Reviews were positive. 3. Six faculty/staff from the Luverne Center attended the Roundtable Discussion on Retention Strategies. Ideas for improving retention were shared, as well as some of the frustrations associated with trying to retain students. Pizza and pop were provided, and reviews were positive.

January 19, 2011 Rod Sissel Teachers/Students using Technology Rod presented three methods of using technology in his classroom. Communicating, Commenting, and technology were the topics that he highlighted. Google voice (voice.google.com) was the first technique that he talked about. It is easy to use, and everything is free. It makes communicating with students extremely easy through the use of text, email and voice. He receives information from students using this technique in the form of assignment queries, and general questions regarding the class expectations. Twitter is Rod’s method for sending information to his students. He set up a class account (RodComp), and had about 40 followers to his twitter account. He can mass-message his class through the use of tweets. The example he used was how he tweeted to the students’ phones how he was locked out of the classroom, and that he would be there soon, and not to leave. The information that he presented on technology began with him recommending the purchase of a more expensive mouse and keyboard with more functionality to best utilize the technology available. The premise behind having more options was that it would save even more time in the long run. Rod also utilized a product that made setting up macros very easy, and very useful. Dragon NaturallySpeaking was a product that he demonstrated and uses for speech recognition, converting spoken language into text. Criterion by ETS, uses machine scoring, first developed by Ellis Page. It analyzes essays using 7 areas. Rod currently has 50 student-licenses and will continue to monitor its benefits. February 16, 2011 March 16-2011 Jennifer Heidelberger – Outlook email, LIVE email, Windows 7

Page 7: Center for the Advancement of Teaching & Learning (CTL

Jennifer showed the different email options available, including Outlook and LIVE as well as web, and showed the functionality of each. This included compacting files, and where to put the compressed files. She demonstrated where to find and how to produce an attractive signature. She talked about the calendar function in the Outlook client. In the LIVE account, she showed the procedure to find and use SkyDrive, the 25 GB of free storage space that we all have through LIVE. Also, through LIVE she explained some of the benefits, like opportunities to back up your data, and create an online filing system with plenty of space for all your files. She showed the procedure to set up a group and share files in the group. She set up a group called Online Tech Tips, and invited us to join the group. She was willing to meet individually with staff about all of the various applications, including email to your cell phone, Outlook Desktop Application, and how to find online tutorials. April 13, 2011 Dave Matthews/Math Department Mobile Notebook Computer Lab Dave Matthews wheeled in the Notebook computer lab. He explained that it is housed in Room 298 – across the hall from the Faculty Resource room. The lab consists of 30 Notebook Eee machines. They were received Fall 2010. Kathy and Dave made sure they would work in the classroom, and put them out for all-faculty use, Spring Semester, 2011. Three instructors, Dave Matthews, Kathy Janssen, and Rick Dalrymple are currently using them. They are housed in a wonderful cabinet with 15 notebooks on each side. They are continually charged 15 at a time while they are housed in the cabinet. The instructions for use are on the top of the cabinet, and walk you through each step, starting with plugging them into a wall outlet, and then plugging them into the Ethernet access point. Dave, Kathy and Rick are very impressed with how the notebooks work for the students and how well the students take care of the notebooks. Kathy assigns each student a number, for accountability, meaning they have to return the notebook in the right slot in the cabinet. The instructors also stress to the students that the Minnesota West Internet Policy must be closely observed. The notebooks, have complete functionality, including all of the Office Products, and even a webcam for Skype. April 27, 2011 Rethink Your Thinking Troy began his presentation with the following objectives to discuss: 1. Health Trends in America 2 Diet vs. Optimal Health 3. Habits of Change 4. Health Challenge

Page 8: Center for the Advancement of Teaching & Learning (CTL

Troy presented some remarkable statistics about the current state of health in America. 66% of adult Americans are overweight or obese, and by 2030, 86% are projected to be overweight or obese. Every year there are over 300,000 obesity deaths, and the cost of obesity to the United States is $142 billion dollars every year. The good news is that obesity is becoming the #1 preventable disease. Our health habits have led us to have quality of life issues, coronary heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, cancers, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stroke, liver and gall bladder disease, and respiratory problems, as well as sleep apnea. The question remains, how did we get into such bad shape? Troy presented reasons why we got this way with more staggering statistics. He stated that we were in an energy crisis. We are tired and stressed out. We consumed $5.7 billion on energy drinks since 2007, 48 million sleep aid prescriptions were written in 2006, and 48% of Americans feel their stress level has increased over the last 5 years. If we add the fact that the fast food industry is now a $130 billion a year industry, we realized that a solution must be found. Diets don’t work, with 85% of dieters gaining back all their weight loss within 2 years. Troy then presented his plan for optimal health, called Complete Health 4 Life. His program trains people to build a “healthy” body. The areas he concentrates on are habits of healthy eating, moving your body, behavioral habits, good sleep, creating a positive environment, and getting support. He gave us a 28-day challenge to think about our current habits and strive to be more conscious of bad choices that we are presently making. He has also said he will come in “free of charge” to present and set-up a 28-day challenge for all staff and faculty to strive for better health practices.

Comments: Superb! The day was well-organized and feel [sic] all breakout sessions were worthy. Presenters did a nice job. Educative event in showing how to be more efective [sic] in the classroom. I would like to utilize ITV, or Adobe Connect for future CTL days (It would give faculty a chance to experience what our students

do.) Would like the college to show concern for faculty safety. I cancel when driving conditions are hazardous. Thank you! Safety was a concern this morning - could some be done via technology Thanks for late start ITV in February would be beneficial due to weather. Classes/CTL should be on ITV. If ITV is so good for students we would save a lot of $ Well done. Prefer to travel in better weather! Why did we have to travel today!! Shorty was good Not enough diet pop (ran out! ); wheat bread sandwiches; well organized - rooms should be better marked that are being

used for sessions - direction signs On bad weather days change to ITV session. Could have some fruit for snack time.
