Musings from the Director…..
Lastmonthwasanespeciallybusyoneforourchemicalsensescommunity,withfiveclosely‐spacedseminarsofinterest.ThismonthwereturntoournormalmonthlyschedulewithatalkbyDr.ElissaHallem(seeitem3).Dr.HallemhasbeeninvolvedinchemicalsensesresearchsinceherdaysasagraduatestudentstudyingolfactionwithDr.JohnCarlsonatYale,andwastherecentrecipientofaMacArthur‘Genius’Award,sowe’rereallylookingforwardtohervisit.
Speakingofinsectolfaction,weareveryfortunatetohavealargebranchoftheUSDepartmentofAgriculture/AgriculturalResearchServicelocatedontheUFcampus.TwelveoftheirscientistsactivelystudythechemicalsensesofvectorandpestinsectsandaremembersoftheCenter.Tohelpshowcasethisimportantscientificconnection,wepresentoneoftheirscientists,Dr.AlHandler,asthismonth’sfeaturedmember(seeitem2).
Finally,justaremindertobeginplanningtoattendandparticipatein
theannualchemicalsenses(AChemS)meeting,whichisbeingheldnextAprilinFt.Meyers,FL(seeitem6).ImentionitnowsincetheabstractdeadlineforthismeetingfallsimmediatelyaftertheHolidaysandalwaysseemstocatchonebysurprisesoit’sgoodtoplanwellinadvance.

Thismonthwe'repleasedtofeatureoneofourchemicalsensescolleaguesfromtheUSDA/ARSfacilityhereinGainesville.Dr.HandlerisaResearchGeneticistwhohasmadenumerousfundamentalcontributionstounderstandingandmanipulatingthegenesoftephritidfruitflies,agroupofinvasivepestsofgreatagriculturalimportancebothintermscroplossandtheestablishmentoftradebarriers.
AfterstudiesindicatedthatthePelementtransformationvectorwasnon‐functionalbeyonddrosophilidspecies,heutilizedthepiggyBactransposontotransformseveraltephritidpestspeciesincludingthecaribfly(Anastrephasuspensa),medfly(Ceratitiscapitata)andorientalfruitfly(Bactroceradorsalis).Hehassincetestednewconditionalautocidaltechniquesthatpromisetoreplacetheirradiationofmales,ameansofinducingsterilitythatcanseriouslydegradethesexualperformanceofinsectsdestinedforSITmass‐releases.Morerecently,Dr.Handlerhasturnedhisattentiontoeliminatingthepossibilityofinadvertenthorizontaltransferofexoticgenesintonon‐targetpopulationsandspecies.Thisenvironmentalriskhasbeenaprincipalobstacletothemorewidespreaduseofgeneticallymodifiedinsectsinbiologically‐basedcontrolprogramsanditsremovalcouldcontributetoagenetic‐transformationrenaissanceinthefieldofentomology.Heandcolleagueshavebeenawardedapatentforthissystemofvectorimmobilizationthatcanbeimplementedwithanovelmethodoftargetingtransgenesintopre‐evaluatedgenomicinsertionsites(“Systemsforgenetargetingandproducingstablegenomictransgeneinsertions”).Dr.HandlerisalsotheconsortiumleaderfortheMedflyWholeGenomeSequencingProjectwhosefirstmanualannotationshavebeenjustcompleted,whichincludesbindingproteinsand/orreceptorsforodorant,gustatoryandionotrophicmolecules.
WearemostpleasedtohaveDr.HandlerandalltheUSDAscientistsasmembersofouractiveandgrowingchemicalsensesresearchcommunity.

Skin‐penetratingparasiticnematodesinfectapproximatelyonebillionpeopleworldwideandareresponsibleforsomeofthemostcommonneglectedtropicaldiseases.Theinfectivelarvaesearchforhostsusingsensorycues,yettheirhost‐seekingbehaviorispoorlyunderstood.Dr.Hallemisconductinganin‐depthanalysisofhostseekingintheskin‐penetratinghumanthreadwormStrongyloidesstercoralis,andcomparingitsbehaviortothatofotherparasiticnematodes.Itdisplaysrobustattractiontoadiversearrayofhumanskinandsweatodorants,manyofwhichinterestinglyalsoattractmosquitoes.Dr.Hallemalsoinvestigatestheneuralbasisofhost‐seekingbehaviorforinsightintohowsensoryneuralcircuitsdifferinfree‐livingvs.parasiticspeciesofnematodestoenablethedevelopmentofnewstrategiesforcombatingharmfulnematodeinfections.
