WELCOME

The Center for Lifelong Learning (CLL) and its Advisory Council welcomes you to a new fall season. The Center strives to combine new and innovative classes with instruc-tors who are excited about sharing their experiences with you. Your first chance to see them in person is at our annual “Open House” on August 26, 2016 from 4:30-6:00 pm in the Brandt Student Center at Shenandoah University. You are invited to our open house to hear guest speaker, Dr. Glenn Burdick, a true lifelong learner. Preview fall classes and enjoy light refresh-ments. FREE and open to public!

The mission of the Center is to help you continue your educational desires, whatever they are, with your family, friends, your local community, and Shenandoah University. We focus on providing you classes and lectures for personal enrichment with thought provoking topics and engaging discussions.

Our FREE community lecture this fall is given by Jeffrey W. Allison, from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Paul Mellon Collection Educator and Manager of Statewide Programs and Exhibitions. The Center welcomes Mr. Allison back again this year with his presentation of “Paris in the 1890s: The World of Toulouse-Lautrec” when Paris was at the height of the Belle Epoque. Enjoy an evening out with a friend on October 7, 2016 from 7-8:30 pm at Shenandoah’s Harry F. Byrd Business School, Stimpson Auditorium and hear Mr. Allison as he talks about Toulouse-Lautrec and his relationship with Van Gogh and the 1956 and 2000 film versions of Moulin Rouge. Mark your calendars now!

Another special event is best-selling author, Kate Andersen Brower who returns to tell the stories of the true power brokers at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Her new book First Women: The Grace and Power of America’s Modern First Ladies, is filled with headline making revelations. This event is a lecture & book signing with registration required. Read more on page 12 for information and regis-tration.

The Center invites you to browse the brochure and see the many opportunities to continue your educational journey. Learn how to create colorful patio gardens, speak Italian or draw for the plea-sure of drawing. Discover how earlier presedential elections are more like todays election than you think. Continue your education by taking a fall class, because you "never stop learning...no matter your age.”

Sincerely,

Jo

MONDAYS

The United States Constitution: What It Really MeansWhy was our Constitution needed in the first place?

The failure of the Articles of Confederation to be an effective central governing agreement after the Revolution led some of the founders – most famously James Madison and Alexander Hamilton – to push for a convention to revise the Articles. That convention was intended only to overhaul the Articles – a war-time agreement meant to knit together the colonies during the crisis of the struggle for independence – but Madison, Hamilton and others understood that something greater must be accomplished. The personal presence of George Washington as chair of the Constitutional Convention, one of Madison’s masterstrokes in politics, ensured the gravity of the proceedings as well as the trust of the public in the outcome. In this five-week class we will review the words of the Constitution from beginning to end, including all seven-core articles and each of the twenty-seven amendments. The core articles have been altered over time as various amendments have supplanted the original language and laws enforced by the Con-stitution from the time it was adopted in 1789. We will cover all changed language, as well as the rea-sons for those changes, some of which involve deep themes in American governing philosophy and the history of the nation. This should come as no surprise, as very few of us will ever become senators (a process covered in Article I), however all citizens can exercise freedom of

speech (one of the enumerated rights in the First Amendment). We will conclude the course with a discussion of contemporary issues directly related to our Constitution.

Your instructor, Patrick Farris has taught many classes for CLL on American History , the Constitu-tion, and the American Revolution.

Controversial Elections: United States Presidency

With a presidential election occurring this year, this course takes on new relevancy. Although the current presidential campaigns have raised some eyebrows, this is not the first election cycle where the contest for winner(s) has been controversial – even ugly.

This five-week class will look into the elections for this high office through the perspective of both American history and contemporary writers of the time. The series looks at the status of elections for the Presidency – past, present and future.

Topics include the review of the candidates’ morality, ethics, standards of behavior and Constitutional re-quirements of law. Scandals, whether real or created by the opposition are also considered if they were part of the campaign.

Past reviews of presidential elections have ranged from the attempt to shock the reader with the alleged scandal to a more profound historical perspective. This series is timely and will bring participants up-to-date as we get closer to the 2016 Presidential race.

Life’s Too Short NOT to Speak Italian

“Life’s Too Short NOT To Speak Italian,” says instruc-tor Nicki de Medici. There is so much to love about Italy—the food, the art, the people. We will focus primarily on the rudiments of the spoken language and include audiovisual materials to take virtual vacations to Italy. We will also discuss social and cultural aspects of Italy today.

Your instructor, Nicki de Medici has been teaching Italian for years at Shenandoah University through the Center for Lifelong Learning. She has lived in, and experienced Italy first-hand to give you the excite-ment of being there. Come and enjoy, as she takes you on a journey of Italy through the sites, sounds and language of Italy!

Aging Gracefully: Making Each Day Count

There may have been a time, ages ago, when grow-ing old was less of a challenge that it is today. Sheer survival and living to an old age were challenges, but those who succeeded were assured of an honored place in society.

Life remained essentially the same from generation to generation and those who had already traveled the road were listened to with reverence and respect as they told us what lay ahead.

Our grand children's world is so different from the one in which we were raised that they see our experi-ences as quaint and exotic, but not terribly useful.

We are like 4-star generals who concentrate on fighting the last war instead of the next one. In other words, it would seem that we have no role to play in our current world. Oh, but we do!

An Evening of Wine TastingLead By Bogaty Family Wine Group

The wine world may seem daunting when you're handed a 20 page wine list or standing in a store with more than hundreds of wines to choose from. The key to learning about wine is in covering first things first and then practicing.

Our approach in this 4-week wine course is exactly that. We give you the most relevant information and then have you practice in simulated circumstances such as or-dering from a wine list or deciphering wine labels. That way we aim to make you comfort-able with wine from the beginning and have you continue your education in wine with enjoyment.

Your instructor, James Bogaty brings over 20 years of wine management experience to his role as CEO to Bogaty Family Wine Group. The Bogaty Family Wine Group produces over 10,000 cases of wines annual and has three additional wineries and vineyard lo-cations. James not only tells his audience about best practices, he lives them!

We will explore the experiences of women such as Helen Pritchard of the Pritchard-Grim Farm, Kern-stown; Sarah Bushong and Sallie Cullers, Shenando-ah County; and Mary McFarland, wife of a minister, Augusta County--and many others.

We will learn more about the many facets of life on the home front—and the women who held things together! Or, those women who worked behind the scene as spies--i.e., Belle Boyd and Elizabeth Van Lew.

FREE COMMUNITY LECTURE OPEN TO PUBLICOne evening only!

Paris in the 1890s: The World of Toulouse-Lautrec

In this free lecture to the public, Jeffrey W. Allison, Virginia Fine Arts Museum, Paul Mellon Collection Educator and Manager of Statewide Programs and Exhibitions, looks at Paris in the 1890s when the city was at the height of the Belle Epoque. Carefree life, fickleness, and Joie de Vivre. These three words sum up this unique period in the History of France.

It was a rest be-tween two wars, a period of transition between two cen-turies during which the social barriers collapsed and the industrial revolu-tion gave hope of a better life for all.

Photography, Japonisme, new styles of writing from the Realists to the Symbolist, and politics were obvious influences on the painters of the era. Less well known, but equally influential were the medi-ums that grew up in the new Cafe concert halls and cabarets. Shadow Puppet play, songs performed by Chanteuse and Diseuse, and, of course, the dancers—from La Goulue and Jane Avril in the cabarets to Loie Fuller fresh from America.

The beating heart of this world was the Butte-Mont-martre and it was to the center of this world that Henre Toulouse-Latrec came in 1881.

First Women: The Grace and Power of America's Modern First Ladies

In her runaway bestseller The Residence (April 2015), Kate Andersen Brower revealed what goes on behind the scenes at the White House.

Now she returns to tell the stories of the true power brokers at 1600 Pennsylva-nia Avenue: the first ladies. Her new book is "FIRST WOMEN: The Grace and Power of America’s Modern First Ladies" and it is filled with headline making rev-elations. Book included with registration.

First ladies are modern women who have modern problems, joys, and sorrows. They are wives, moth-ers, and political advisers who empathize with each other because, like American presidents, they are the only people who understand what it’s like to live in the fishbowl of the White House.

They forge friendships, like that between Michelle Obama and Laura Bush, and they share in each oth-er’s lives completely, like the lifelong bond between Lady Bird Johnson, Betty Ford, and Rosalynn Carter. They also have bitter rivalries, such as the bad blood between Barbara Bush and Nancy Reagan and the surprisingly cool distance between Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton.

Kate Andersen Brower lives near Washington, D.C. with her husband, Brooke Brower, an executive pro-ducer for MSNBC, their two young children, Graham and Charlotte, and their Wheaten Terrier, Chance.
