Training and Documentation
o New Employee Training
o General Training (all researchers) o In person (Lab Safety Training ); or
o Online (All Three Modules) o Introduction to Research Safety
o Chemical Safety
o Chemical Waste Management
o Specific Material Use Training o Bloodborne Pathogen Training
o Biosafety in Laboratory
o Implementation of NIH Guidelines
o IACUC (for Animal Users)
o Radiation
o Annual Refresher
o Lab Specific Training
All University faculty, staff, and students that work in or supervise
individuals working in laboratories are required by law to receive
training regarding safety issues and practices in their work place.
Lab Specific Training
o New employee
o Prior to assignments involving new potential exposure
o Must cover o SOP (lab specific)
o Location of safety documentation, LSP and emergency contacts
o Compliance issues
o Proper use of safety equipment
o Must be provided at least annually
Each laboratory supervisor is responsible for ensuring that
laboratory employees are provided with training about the
specific hazards present in their laboratory work area, and
methods to control such hazards.
Compliance Basics
Keep your fume hoods clean and keep the sash down
Use proper secondary containment for liquid chemical storage, including waste.
All chemicals must be labeled appropriately
Same for fridges and freezers where toxic/hazardous chemicals are stored
Maintain an inventory of current chemicals in use
Try to dispose of older chemicals as waste
Compliance Basics
Sharps and biohazard containers must be
properly labeled with the biohazard
symbol
DO NOT recap sharps
Call hazardous waste when sharps
containers are ¾ full, do not fill them all
the way to the top
Call hazardous waste if chemicals are
unknown
Watch for proper lab attire
No sandals
Cover all exposed skin (hands/legs)
Eye protection
No gloves or lab coat in public spaces
No food or drink in laboratories
Identify safety equipment
Flush eyewashes once a week and record
Test the shower annually and record

Chemical Security
Dept of Homeland Security requires monitoring of
“Chemicals of Interest” (COI) and reporting if exceed
thresholds
DEHS has completed a baseline inventory
DEHS is now monitoring purchases through EFS for
purchases through U Stores front end and is approving
such purchases
DEHS will be directing major vendors to accept orders
only through EFS/U Stores
No COI Purchases with P-Cards or PO!

Flood Emergency
Potential Hazards
Shock Hazard. Wiring, light fixtures, electrical outlets
were very wet.
Chemical Hazard.
Fire Hazard. Most chemistry labs store water reactive
chemicals.
Asbestos Hazard. Ceiling tiles fell.

Flood Emergency Report
1. Report water event immediately to BSAC (612-624-
2900). Personnel: FM Safety Officer Larry Thompson:
612-685-6007(cell).
2. Call EHS (626-6002) and report the incident. Personnel:
Neil Carlson.
3. Call 911 after hours.
Primary Responders
FM: HazMat (Sean Gabor), team manager (Denise
Thomas), safety officer (Larry Thompson).
DEHS: Emergency management staff (Mike Austin, Neil
Carlson, etc…)
Communications with Mike Austin, Assistant
Director, DEHS
“In retrospect I think we should have been more
concerned about stray voltage considering how wet the
area was.”
“If your staff are concerned about their safety during a
water event they should leave the area.”
“The U has a procedure lead by the Dept. of Emergency
Management to review emergency incidents with an
interdisciplinary group and we will review timing and
responses to this event at our next meeting.”
“We are reviewing our response procedures and will
take responsibility for implementing any changes.”
If it’s safe to do so, turn off electrical equipment and
secure experiments, vital equipment, records, and
hazardous material by moving it to higher ground
(Note: only persons knowledgeable about electrical
shock hazards should shut the power off).
Call 911 to report hazardous substances that may
contaminate flood waters.
Do not dump flood water down the storm drain
unless doing so is approved by environmental
health and safety staff.
