AndanewstudyfromtheUniversityofDelaware’sCenterforPoli+calCommunica+onsuggestsagenera+onalblowupovertransgenderrightscouldbeonthemenu.

Inthestudy,alargemajorityofpeoplesurveyedsaidtheyfavorprotec+onfromdiscrimina+onfortransgenderindividualsbothinschools(71percent)andinworkplaces(70percent),andalargemajorityalsosupportsallowingtransgenderpeopletoserveopenlyintheU.S.military(62percent).

TheUDsurveyrevealsthepublicismoredividedonrequiringpublicbuildings,suchascourthouses,tohavegenderneutralrestrooms.OnlyaslimmajorityofAmericansfavorthis,byamarginof51percentto43percent.

Thesplitonthisissuehasplayedoutacrossthena+oninrecentweeks.Lastweek,theHoustonEqualRightsOrdinancewasrepealedthanksinlargeparttoacampaignbyaChris+anadvocacygroupthatfocusedonthethreatof“meninwomen’sbathrooms.”And,inWisconsin,Republicanspushedtoprohibittransgenderpublicschoolstudentsfromusingabathroomorlockerroomassignedtothegenderwithwhichtheyiden+fied.

Lookingmorecloselyattheresults,PaulBrewer,DirectoroftheCenterforPoli+calCommunica+on,saidcleardivisionsontheseissuesemergebasedonage,genderandpoli+calparty.

“ComparedtoRepublicans,Democratsaremorefavorabletowardtransgenderrights–adividethatthe2016poli+calcampaigncouldhighlight,”Brewersaid.

Thesharpestpoli+caldivisionsemergedontheissuesofrequiringgenderneutralrestroomsandtransgenderpeopleservinginthemilitary.NearlythreeoutoffourDemocratssurveyed(74percent)saidtransgenderpeopleshouldbeabletoserveinthemilitary,whileonly43percentofRepublicanssupportedthatidea.Meanwhile,Democratsbackedtheideaofrequiringgender-neutralbathroomsinpublicplacesbyatwo-to-onemarginoverRepublicans(66percent-34percent).

TheCPCstudyalsorevealedagenera+ongapontransgenderrights.Respondentsbetweentheagesof18-34overwhelminglysupporttransgenderprotec+oninschools(83percent),protec+onagainstjobdiscrimina+on(77percent)andarighttoserveinthemilitary(72percent),andaclearmajorityofyoungpeople(59percent)saidgender-neutralrestroomsshouldberequired.

People55andoldershowedfarlesssupportfortransgenderrightsandprotec+ons,althoughamajorityofolderrespondentsdidfavorprotec+ngtransgenderstudents(60percent)andworkers(56percent).

AmongolderAmericans,theissueofgenderneutralpublicbathroomsmightbeatopictoavoidattheholidaydinnertable.Only43percentofrespondentsover55favorrequiringgender-neutralrestrooms.
