The River Discovery Center was privileged to display a small but stirring collection of the International Honor Quilt, inspired by Judy Chicago. The exhibit at the Center included specially selected pieces from the collection of individual triangle quilt panels produced by women, honoring women. The triangles combine a variety of media and techniques. Viewed individually, the panels are not what we consider to be quilts in the traditional sense of quilting. When the panels are pieced together they create a whole quilt by uniting a shared sense of the notable contributions made by women from all over the world. Professional quilters, seamstresses and artists, execute some of the panels but every day artisans make the great majority. Some employ conventional quilting materials in traditional patterns. In addition, many panels use traditional decorative elements such as topstitching, needlepoint, and embroidery. Other quilts rely on incorporating mixed media in original methods. Several panels are creative collages combining favorite items of the person honored. Most are accompanied by descriptions of their makers and subjects. Inspired by the tradition of quilting bees, Judy Chicago, used the social nature of quilting as a means for women to engage in the social issue of women’s rights. Chicago and her nonprofit art organization Through the Flower recently donated the “International Honor Quilt” (IHQ) to the University of Louisville Hite Art Institute. The River Discovery Center was honored to share this work of art with quilters from all over the world during Paducah’s quilt week. w w w. r i v e r d i s c o v e r y c e n t e r. o r g Center Displays International Honor Quilt SPRING 2016 Two new steamboats will be joining the procession of boats that already visit the Paducah’s riverfront each year. SPRING 2016

Two new steamboats will be joining the procession of boats that already visit the Paducah’s riverfront each year. With the arrival of the 2016 river cruising season just around the corner, we have learned that the “America” a new boat owned by American Cruise Lines, the company that also owns Queen of the Mississippi, will be making its Paducah debut on July 25th. The Louisiane, owned by French American Line, will make port in August, September and November. It will be making its Inaugural voyage after be-ing refurbished. DIRECTOR’S NOTES!

THE DRAGONS ARE COMING!

Saturday, September 17th, 2016 is the date of the 5th annual Paducah Dragon Boat festival. The festival, the center’s largest fundraiser, benefits educational programing and has grossed around $275,000 in its 4 years of existence. This event has allowed the River Discovery Center to create new educational programing and expand on its current programs. It has also allowed the center to serve underserved areas of our region.

Many teams have already committed to this years event which we hope you won’t miss. New this year will be the People’s Choice awards!

The River Discovery Center’s first annual “Water Street Fish Fry” has been scheduled for Saturday, July 9th, on Water Street between Broad-way and Kentucky, from 6 till 9 pm. Don’t miss the festive atmosphere of Water Street trimmed in twinkling lights. Jeff Parker will be providing the food, and beer and wine will be served.

The cost for a table of 8 is $1000, including two drink tickets per person, and they are selling fast! Individual tickets are also available. Don’t miss out on an opportunity to help support the River Discov-ery Center’s educational programs.

Call Julie, 270-575-9958, for more information.
