On behalf of the Organising Committee, we would like to invite you to attend the Centenary of FlotationSymposium that is to be held in Brisbane, Australia, 6 – 9 June 2005.

The Symposium is being held to celebrate 100 years since the introduction of flotation into the minerals industry. It follows the very successful and long remembered conferences organised by the SME to mark the 50th and 75thanniversaries. The froth flotation process was first used for mineral separation at Broken Hill in Australia, fromwhich it quickly became known in the United States and the rest of the world. A hundred years later, flotationremains of fundamental importance in mineral processing operations.

The program covers all aspects of flotation, from fundamentals to plant operations. We have had an excellentresponse to the call for papers, and expect that over 120 papers will be presented, from many countries. Therewill be two streams in parallel: Flotation Fundamentals; and Flotation Process Engineering for Coal and Minerals. All the main application areas will be represented, including base metals, precious metals and coal. New trendsin equipment, flotation chemistry, circuit design and control will be featured. Some of the sessions will deal withnon-conventional flotation, and applications in water and wastewater treatment.

Associated with the Symposium will be an exhibition of equipment and service suppliers relevant to flotation. There will be workshops prior to the meeting, and immediately after, tours will leave for leading coal and mineralmining centres.

Brisbane is the capital city of the State of Queensland. Queensland is very large, with over 2000 km of subtropicaland tropical coastline. Queenslanders use the slogan “beautiful one day, perfect the next” to describe the climateand the ambiance. We cannot guarantee the weather, but we can confidently say that you will find the Symposiuma memorable experience.

We look forward to seeing you at the Centenary of Flotation Symposium in Brisbane in June 2005.

The company is experiencing a majorgrowth phase, with its first class resource base andinfrastructure assets providing a strong foundation onwhich to grow and strengthen the business. The twomines and three coal preparation plants which will bevisited at Goonyella-Riverside and Peak Downs areamong the largest coking coal operations in the world.Froth flotation is a key processing technology forthese high-quality, high-vitrinite coking coals. The threeflotation circuits visited are all the first of their type, installed on the 0.5mm x 0 duty in the mid 1990s andare contrasting approaches to the same task. They arelarge for coal flotation circuits at around 450tph, andhave been of significant economic benefit to the sitesconcerned by producing much cleaner concentratesthan the hog trough cells they replaced.

Between1902 and 1915, mineral flotationwas developed as an industrial process at Broken Hill,to recover zinc minerals from gravity tailings, and laterto produce separate lead and zinc concentrates bydifferential flotation. In 2002 Perilya Broken HillLimited (Perilya) acquired the Broken Hill lead, zincand silver mine from Pasminco Limited.

This full-day tour will visit the Perilya SouthernOperation, Old North Mine Concentrator and CBHoriginally South Mine Concentrator before enjoying aBBQ dinner at the local watering hole, kindly hostedby Perilya.

Located in mineral-rich North West Queensland,Xstrata Copper’s Mount Isa Mines, operates one ofthe largest underground mines in the world. TheEnterprise Underground Copper Mine, the mostrecent copper ore source at Mount Isa, is Australia’s deepest mine, with an internal shaft that reaches 1800 metres deep.

Mount Isa Mines also mines and processes zinc-lead-silver and runsthese operations on behalf of Xstrata Zinc. Xstrata Copper is one offour commodity businesses within the major global diversifiedmining group Xstrata plc. Along with Mount Isa Mines, XstrataCopper’s operations comprise the Townsville Copper Refinery andBowen Coke works, the Ernest Henry open pit copper-gold mineand the Townsville Port facilities. It also operates the Alumbreracopper-gold mine in the Catamarca Province in Argentina, SouthAmerica.

The company’s mining and smelting complex at Mount Isaproduces copper annode and lead bullion containing silver and zincconcentrate. Copper anode is transported for refining at thecompany’s copper refinery in Townsville, while lead bullion istransported for refining at the company’s lead-silver refinery inEngland. Zinc concentrate is sold directly to customers in Australiaand overseas.

The Mount Isa Mines Copper stream processes ore from the IsaCopper Mine and concentrate from Xstrata Copper’s Ernest HenryMine situated about 40 km north of Cloncurry.

The zinc-lead-silver stream sources ore from the company’s LeadMine at Mount Isa and its George Fisher Mine complex situatedabout 20 km north of the city.

During early 2005 the Black Star zinc-lead open pit at Mount Isabegan producing ore, which is expected to provide an additionald1.5 million tonnes of ore this year.
