Description of the Tables

Data Sources

Population counts for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN) residing in Alaska were taken from the P.L. 94-171 (Voting Rights Act) files released by the State of Alaska on March 16, 2011. Three data files labeled: “ak000012010”, “ak000022010” and “akgeo2010” were used to determine community of residence and race. The files can be found on Bureau of the Census website: http://www2.census.gov/census_2010/01-Redistricting_File--PL_94-171/Alaska/

American Indian and Alaska Native Definition

There were 104,871 individuals who identified themselves on the 2010 Census form as American Indian/Alaska Native “one race only”. Another 33,441 individuals identified themselves as AI/AN in combination with one or more other races.

Geographical Definition

Communities listed in this report are Census Designated Places (CDP) unless the count of Alaska Native Village Statistical Area (ANVSA) allowed us to better define the place. For example, using the ANVSA in some places prevented us from having to put individuals in the “unspecified” category. The population counts in this publication were balanced to the 2010 borough, census district or municipality counts, and to the Alaska voting precinct. The abbreviations used in this report to refer to the borough, census district or municipality are defined in Appendix A. Information on the local precinct balance is available on the Alaska Area IHS website: www.alaska.ihs.gov/dpehs.

Service Area Definition

Alaska communities are grouped into AI/AN health service areas based on the definitions provided by the Tribe, or defined in their tribal funding agreement with the Indian Health Service.
