a. Financial Secretary * Correction to report: loose collection should be $265.45. Update ongiving estimates in budget - change pledge total to $43,810.

b. Hannaford Card program * Sharon Dean is doing a fabulous job, per Lynne Gibson. PerSharon, please consider joining this program, which costs you absolutely nothing.

c. Endowment repdrt - Ellen Farnsworth, as chair of trustees, thanked Bill Wadsworttr, whois now retiring from this job. (Round of applause for Bill!) We need someone to take overthis responsibility, which per Bill is quite simple and basically involves receiving aquarter$ report from the state conference and reporting results to trustees.

d. Trustees * Ellen Farnsworth thanked Joy Richardson, who "kept us in line, did such agreat job of paying down our debt, and did an altogether amazing job." (Round otapplause for Joy!) It is taking us five people to replace Joy * Doug Guy (treasurer),Harper Dean and Greg Maxwell (assistant teasurers), Ken W'amer (bookkeeper), andSharon Dean (Hannaford card).

e. Proposed 2019-202A Budget (Ellen Famsworttr)(1) Expenqes have increased a bit. Cost of living adjustments (COLA) to employee

salaries, which is'Just the right thing to do." Hired a Sunday school teacher. Put inadditional money for maintenance on #0906 for steeple lighting, so that we won't gethit with a large maintenance bill every few years. Better to try to deal withmaintenance and upkeep on an ongoing, incremenlal basis.

(2) This is a de{icit budget, but we're hoping that folks will step up with additionalpledges. Actually just about $ I I ,996 short. \Me brought in more income last year thanbudgeted, and no reason to expect this year to be different. Still have six or eight folkswho haven't yet turned in their pledge cards for this year, too.

(3) Stained glass window restoration and stage expansion project are NOT in the budget;paid for tluough other sources.

(4) Per Doug Guy * Machias Bay Chamber Concerts donated $2,500, WashingtonCounty Children Chorus donated $2,500, and we've received smaller individualdonations. One person vrants to help pay for the sound system. Our Steinway playerpiano is for sale; originally appraised at $40K range, though Doug thinks it'sprobably worth about $10K.

(5) Per Harper Dean - Getchell window has gone to Minnesotq to retum in six totwelve months. We've raised about half the money so far. $35-$38K per window.Question * Since that side of the stage is dark because the stained glass is temporarilyreplaced with plywood, could we replace the plywood with plexiglass? Answer -We're getting an estimate" Probably around $2,500, but could be used later for theother windows too.

Motion to accept proposed budget.Moved and as amended with on

MODERATOR'S REPORTANNUAL MEETING 2019--2020

I've always loved the opening line &om A Tale af Two Cities, Charles Dickens's 1859 novelabout the French Revolution:

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was theage of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was theseason of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winterof despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us."

As I look back over the past year, it certainly feels like we've been living through the best andworst of times-wisdom paired with foolishness, light paired with darkness. We had to close ourchurch building on a week's notice, learn how to use the internet (Zoom!) in new andchallenging ways, and cancel our beloved Blueberry Festival, but we're still standing. Stillstanding for God, one another, our community, and everyone who needs our prayers andassistance.

Washington County has been fortunate to see few cases of Covid-I9 thus far, though we need tobe careful not to get complacent. Over the summer and fall, our church family will be discussingvarious aspects of our ministry, mission, physical space, finances, staffing, and longer termplanning. We don't all agree on much of anything-how dangerous the virus is, when or even ifwe need to wear face coverings, when and how to resume in-person worship services, howconcerned we should be about the budget, and so on. We're Congregationalists, after all, and notexactly known for being unopinionated and placidly compliant, but that's one of our strengths.

As we move forward, our pastor and church leadership will keep listening closely for God'svoice, knowing that our Holy Creator loves us and continues to guide us. We will also createplenty of time and space for your voices-the voice of every person who chooses to participatein the ministry of this Body of Christ-to be heard, valued, and respected. Much of thatconversation will take place at Church Council, and I encourage you to join us for thoseWednesday evening meetings. (Email me for dates and Zoom link.)

Since the weather has warmed up, Laurel and I enjoy eating supper on our back porch, whichoverlooks open fields bordered by woods. We're often graced by the presence of deer, a busylittle red fox, and several wild turkey families. Recently a mama porcupine waddled across theyard, followed closely by her adorable baby, and it has been fun to watch the baby turkeyspractice flapping their wings. Those animals are oblivious to the honor splashed across the frontpages of our newspapers every day. They're just enjoying their lives in the beauty of God'screation, appreciating the apple cores that Laurel tosses out for them and the rich, abundant grassthat I don't mow often enough.

My prayer for us, as we enter this new church year, is that we'll seek ways to do the same-appreciate the beauty of God's creation, take good care of each other, and love our neighbors. It's true that this is the worst of times in some ways, but it can also be the best of times. Life'sfunny like that. Thank you for all the time, energy, and resources that you dedicate to theongoing life and vitality of this church family and God's work among us.

CHURCH CLERKANNUAL Rf, PORT 2019.2020

The Annual Meeting of Centre Street Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, was held on July 14,2019. A budget was approved, officers were elected, and annual reportswere reviewed and discussed.

In August the 44e Annual Machias Wild Blueberry Festival was held under the capableleadership of co-chairs Nancy Lewis and Ellen Farnsworth. The musical, Blueberrtes on theRoof, was a rousing succes$ using the newly enlarged chancel. Following the festival, a thankyou picnic was held at the home of Nancy Lewis and Mark Brown in Marshfield.

In October, the church hosted the Fall Sunrise Association Meeting and Trick or TreatMain Sfreet. Finley McMahon was baptized on October 13.

On November 6, the church hosted a Welcome Fair for the wreath-making migrantworkers in cooperation with Mano en Mano. The church family donated food and clothing itemsalong with a meal. Many people helped to make this a success and continue the partnership withMano en Mano in coming years.

December 15 brought a joint concert with music from the Washington County Children'sChorus, Centre Street Chancel and Bell Choirs, and the intoduction of Boomwhackersl

In February there were several Sundays with nasty weather, which resulted in churchservices being cancelled.

Prior to March, the church continued to hold quarterly potlucks and host thePassamaquoddy Bay Symphony Orchesta, the Washington County Children's Chorus, 360Downeast, Washington County Indivisihle, and the Neighbors Helping Neighbors window insertproject.

On March 11, Church Council called an emergency meeting and started the process ofclosing the church due to Covid-l9. The decision was a tough one, but considering the MaineConference and CDC guidelines, the determination was made that for the foreseeable future, worship services and meetings would be held virtually. Pastor Susie and a dedicated team oftechies worked to offer worship services via Zoom, which allowed some semblance of continuityand structure during what would tum out to be several months of uncertainty. Church Councilmet monthly, aloug with special meetings to discuss the Blueberry Festival, reopeningprocedures, and updated recommendations ofthe Maine Conference and CDC.

On April29, Church Council held a special meeting and decided that the BlueberryFestival could not safely be held this year due to Covid-l9. According to the governor's order, gatherings would be limited to 50 people in July and August to help limit the spread of thecoronavirus.

The church continues to be the home and sponsor of the Machias Area Food Pantry, as anessential service uuderthe direction of Eunice Mommens. Worship services and church meetingscontinue to be conducted over Zaomas I write this report.

Respectfully submitted, Lynne L. Gibson, church clerk

PASTORANNUAL REPORT 20 19 -2020

'oNever place a period where God has placed a comma"-Gracie Allen

The United Church of Christ is famous for its *God is still speaking" motto. But with all theevents that have unfolded since 2020 began, it would seem God is speaking YERY LOUDLY. Ifind it interesting that all the hot-bumer issues that have long needed to be addressed are gettingtheir long over-due attention in2}20. The numbers20120 are also a visual reference for perfectvision. Surely racial, economic, social, emotional, and spiritual justice, belonging and well-beingare part of God's vision for ALL of God's creation. In my active imagination, God is saying,o'That's it. Time to bring everything back into focus.'o We have a lot of workto do, btx if wefollow God, we can do it. Who knows what we'll accomplish in our lifetimes? With God, allthings are possible. In the meantime, here's a reflection on my past year as Cente Sfeet'spastor.

I looked back at last year's annual report, which began with me saying that I was "by necessitysetting availability limits." I didn't seem to get very far with that because the world exploded, and between Covid-19 rearranging how we worship and the new energy with the Black LivesMatter movement, even more came to me and us that needs tending to. I'll go back to thedrawing board and look at organizing my time so that I can realistically deal with my half-timestatus (which I like) and where to best use that half-time in what is really a full-time ministry.

On fowth Sundays, when I am not leading worship, congregants have been stepping up andtaking turns. Similar to last year's report, our lay preaching is picking up and we are slowlybuilding a pretty wide base of voices from the congregation. Thank you for all who give in thisimportant way. If you would like to give it a by, please let me know. It can be as simple astelling a story that relates to the scripture.

While I had originally imagined that otr fifth Sundays would be used for trying worship outsidethe box, *Church Outside of Church" appears to have morphed into atime for sharing a morningmeal.

This year I have begun training in spiritual direction through the Alcyon Center on Mount DesertIsland. Spiritual direction will help me help either you with individual conceflrs or as acongregations when it comes to listening to and for God's voice and guidance.

Due to being unable to gather in person, our church formed a"care team" and this essentiallywas an effort to gather anybody who was interested in making calls, writing notes, or runningerrands for Cente Streeters who were feeling the effects of not being able to gather in person. Our care team has been spectacular and a wonderful ministry in and of itself. The CentreStreeters who have been helping out are Bonnie 8., Cindy, Joan, Katherine Holmes, Laura,Laurel, Lisa, Lynne, Meri, Missy, Nancy, and Sarina. I am also aware that many of you call and

check on others without an official designation. Thank you ALL for the loving care you aregiving to each othet.

Highlights from this past year include:

I started the grief process group and that was very well received. Unfortunately, abouthalfway through, like many things where people gathered in person, it got intemrpted.

We moved worship online and have been able to reach more people as a result! When churchdoes eventually go back to in-person worship, our online presenco will need to continue. Inthe meantime, a HUGE shout out to my co-pilot Harper Dean on the first three Sundays ofthe month. Harper helps people get online and oriented and helps me with the mute button.

Sunday school was thriving! We had more young families (Welcome to the Wands and theThaxtons!) regulady joining us and bringing fresh life to our congregation!

We said goodbye to the Douglas family (I did fbr us initially, but will be sending out theiraddress so you can drop a note if you'd like) as Mark's new job took them to West Virginia.

On the pantry front, I am thrilled to report that after prayerful consideration on my side andher side, Eunice Mommens (faithful pantry volunteer) has stepped in as the director.

Finley was baptized and slept through the whole thing!

As always, I give thanks to God that we walk together at this time and in this place. You have allgone to extraordinary measures in so many ways: learning new technology to keep worshipping, being extra generous with your financial resources (since we had to cancel our Machias WildBlueberry Festival), reaching out and caring for each other, rearranging your own expectationsand plans, and continuing with the usual functions (Hannaford cards - thanks Sharon!, keepingthe church extra clean - thanks Missy and Alan!), paying the bills (thanks Harper!), keepingbusiness going (thanks, Ken!). Huge demands on your time and flexibility have been pressedupon you. I also want to give Cindy a huge shout out as moderator. It's been a lot of extra workhelping us navigate church when we first decided to close, to conducting our business online sothat it is official, to planning for out Covid-safe tentative reopening in September - thank you forleading us through those parts!

These times are very challenging, I know, but as I've prcached on in the past - it is thedifficulties in life that tell us who we are, who we axe not, and who we need to become. If wefollow God, those answers will become clear-*not necessarily easy, but clear. I'm excited to seewhere God leads us as we begin a new church calendar year together!

Many blessings to each of you -Yours,Pastor ,swsLe

DEACONSANNUAL REPORT 2OI9*202A

The Board of Deacons was busy again this year working closely with Pastor Susie Maxwell topromote the spiritual growth and life of our church and its members. Each Sunday, deacons werepresent to assist with the worship service-from handing out bulletins, greeting members andvisitors, lighting candles, receiving the offering, assisting with Communioru and taking part innew mennber celebrations and baptisms to turning offthe lights and locking the doors. We tookour responsibilities seriously and have been faithful stewards of our church. We appreciate thosedeacons amorg us who also assumed even more responsibility for the service by delivering thesefinon on more than one occasion. Thank you, Sarina and Laurel!

Throughout the year, we worked hard to organize and plan for our church's spfitual life, Weassisted Pastor Susie with the many services ttrat she offered during the year outside of Srurdayworship. We rejoiced in participating in the baptism of Finley McMahon and in welcoming newmembers Meri Fern, Bonnie Beiswingero Jane Hinsoru and Eric and Betty Kelly. We alsomaintained responsibil,W for filling the pulpit on the fourth Sundays of the month. In addition toSarina and Lar.uel, we were pleased to have Rev. Deborah Blood (Maine's Conference Minister),Sarah Craighead-Dedmon, Lynne Gibson, Ernie Atkinsoru Cindy Huggins, Reverend ArtNelson, and Ed Mosel share the pulpit this year. We are blessed to have such a talented group ofinspirational speakers willing to share their messages.

We assumed many additional responsibilities as part of our commiftnent to the Board ofDeacons:

r We managed the Deacons' Fund/Fuel Assistance Program that coatinues to help those inneed in our community. Through the generosity of our members and friends, we havebeen able to answer the call to help twenty-six families this year. We thank Ken Warnerfor his part in fielding these calls and managing the database. Donations to the Deacons'Fund can now be made online through Tithe.ly.

r We begaa updating our membership list with the help of Cindy and will continue to workon this update.

r We drafted a list of deacon responsibilities that will be helpful for new Board members.r We were pleased to welcome Meri Fem to our Board in December. However, after

careful consideration, Meri decided she needed to step down. Therefore the deaconsrespectfirlly accepted Meri's resignation in June and thanked her for her time served.

r We decided to shake things up a bit and change the way that offering was collected.Rather t}an collecting the offering as part of the service, we decided to have onecollection plate at the greeting table and one on the table in the back of the church. Sincemonetary giving is such a personal thing, we felt that by receiving the offering in thisway, we would areate a more comfortable giving atrnosphere.

o At each monthly meeting, we continued to remember those members and friends of ourchurch family who were ill, recovering from surgery, or needed abit of encouragement. We sent out many cards during the year that helped to lift spirits and calm the soul.

Page 13: Cenre Street Congregational Church · MEETING AGENDA 24gthAnnual Meeting Cenke $treet Congregational Church, UCC July 19,2A20 Opening Prayer 1. Determination of Quorum (12 covenant

r We look fonvard to Advent each year when we get to decorate the church for theChristmas season. This year, thanks to our very artistic Sarin4 along with our dedicatedgroup of Christmas Angels, we decorated the church in new fashion. The beautifuldecorations, along with the new display of mangers and the display of flowers brought inby individuals, helped to brighten up this special holiday season and will most likelybecome a new tradition.

Our last in-person worship servise was on March 15, and as a result of the need for socialdistancing, the deacons have had to forgo many of their traditional Sunday responsibilities. However, that has not prevented us from continuing our mission of being spiritual stewards. Wehave continued to mannge the Fuel Assistance Prograrq send out correspondence, and workalongside Pastor Susie to fulfill ow members' spiritual needs. However, our in-person meetingshave been replaced by Zoom meetings.

The Board of Deacons is a small but mighty group that has proven itself capable of doing goodworks. It has been my honor and pleasure to work alongside this group of women this past year.As my second term on the Board ends today, I thank each and every one of them. I know thatthey will continue to do good work and, with God's blessing, carry out their mission withcompassion and love.

l. Member changes: We lost Darlene Wheeler and gained Joan Brooks and Sharon Dean thisyear.

2. V/e hosted the Welcome Fair for Mano en Mano's wreath workers. Church members helped usby filling 150 grocery bags with food for the migrant workers. Pastor Susie and Ken Warnercooked a beautifirl meal that was served in the vestry for the workers. Also, church membersbrought in warm clothing for the workers to select. We plan to hold this Welcome Fairannually.

3, The Regifting Auction was held in February netting $375 that was donated to Next Step, theorganization offering shelter to battered women. We also solicited pots and pans and otherkitchenware for that organization, and we invited the women to the Food Pantry as needed.

4. Plans for the future: Sharon offered to write grants to assist the food pantry in providing foodto the community.

5. Becky suggested that we form a knitters group to provide warn hats and mittens for needychildren. This has not occurred yet.

6. The Committee has not met since February, as some members haven't had access tn Zoom ot acomputer. Wb me hoping to meet on a regular basis starting this fall, still on Zoom. BarbaraHope has had some health issues, but she plans to continue as chair of this committee.

MACHIAS WILD BLUEBERRY FESTIYALANNUAL REPORT 2019_2020

Another festival weekend dampened by on and off rain showers did not lessen the spirits ofeveryone who came to enjoy the 44th Annual Machias Wild Blueberry Festival, August 16*18,2019. Even before the sun finally made an appearanc€ toward the end of the weekend, thecrowds remained steady, happy, and engaged with everything the festival had to offer. New signson the front of our church, above the vesty door, and on top of the big tent created a feeling ofwelcome. The crew in the Information Booth also shared in conveying a feeling of welcome andtrue Down East hospitality.

Once again, this event brought to town thousands of visitors whose pahon4ge not only helpedsupplement our church treasury (we netted $2,689 over budget), but also added to the generaleconomic prosperity of the region. Our church should be proud of its role as a beacon ofgoodwill in the community.

This year we enjoyed many of our favorite events that make this festival the premiermoneymaking event in the area, starting with the Blueberry Drop that was the kickoff to ourweek of BBF events and to the call to worship for our Sunday service on August 11. Blueberriesan thp Roof, our homegrown musical, produced and directed by Doug and Christine Guy, was agreat success and real crowd-pleaser all week! (I'd selfishly like to ttrink that a special guestappearance each night by Pastor Susie, Ellen, and me contibuted to the musicalos success!)

There was no shortage of food options during the weekend and no one went away hungry!Festival visitors were treated to a great selection of food items provided by the WashingtonCounty Children's Chorus, the Swamp Yankee BBQ Truck, the Towne Fryer, and, of course, byour own church chefs who ofi[ered such favorites as the al1-you-can-eat Fish Fry, all-you-can-eatPancake Breakfast, and Dessert Buffet. The addition of an outside booth that sold local, freshMaine wild blueberries proved profitable and will continue to be an offering in the future.

While festival guests visited the ever-increasing number of vendots; bought chances on thisyear's beautiful quilt; purchased a tote, hat, or beautiful t-shirt designed by our own Jane Hinson;cheered on the contestants of the pie eating contest; took part in the youth activities in the kids'zone provided by the CAN Council and Wes the Magician; or just relaxed and rested underthebig tent, the music on the church stsps continued entertaining non-stop. A lineup of favoritegxoups had the crowds dancing in the street. The transportation team, who provided shuttleservice, was busy all weekend and is to be commended for providing the important service ofaccommodating 771 guests and vendors.

Planning for and executing the BBF is truly a teem effort each year, involving church members, friends, and local spon$ors. As we celebrale and thank God for the blueberry harvest each year atour Sunday worship service at the culmination of the weekend, we also celebrate and thank eachand every volunteer, both on the scene and behind the scenes, who make this event happen eachyear.

HANNAFORD CARDANNUAL REPORT 2019-2020

Hannaford donated $4,309 to our church over the past yearl

This was made possible by seventeen people or families remembering to get checks-in any

amount and at their convenience--to church once or twice a month.

As coordinator of this program, I load the amount of their check onto their Hannaford gift cards.

Then they use those cards to make their purchases at Hannaford.

Hannaford makes a donation to the church in the amount of 5 percent of the total-usingHannaford's money, not church membert' money.

Soooo . . . For example, each person who spends an average of $100 per week at Hannaford

generates a $260 p€r year donation to our church.

That adds up! It's a nice addition to our budget and the good works we can do with it.

For more information, contact Sharon Dean at slxtlg&dealri@tgug!.eg:lt or 255-4405.

TRUSTEESANNUAL MEETING 2O19-2020

The Trustees have had a relatively quiet, but productive year. We even have fun during ourmeetings. We have made the oagoing maintenauce and upkeep of the church building a priorityThe chancel project is still happening, with a few iterns left to complete, and plans for theircompletion. The new lighting in the ves$ has made a world of difference and will also save ussome money in the long run. We even seem to have figured out how to divert the water fromcoming into the vestry without having to go to the expense of building an elaborate drainagesystem.

The ehanging of the guard for the treasurer position has gone amazingly well. Joy Richardsonwas a patient and capable teacher to Harper Dean, and he now handles these duties with skill andconfidence. (I know he really appreciates having Joy just a phone call away.) Ken Wamer helpsHarper, and Doug Guy and Greg Maxwell are backups. It is a good system.

We are thrilled that Ed Mosel has agreed to take over for Bill Wadsworth as our InvestmentFunds Administator. Bill did this for years (for which we sre very grateful), but he wanted toretire wheu Joy retired. Ed has done a great job of staying on top of things and keeping theTrus, tees informed of our investnents. Thank you, Ed!

We are pleased to say that the budget ending this fiscal year is in the black! We are feeling fairlypositive about the upcoming fiscal year too. Even without the Blueberry Festival, we are hopefulthat with careful maragement and the continuing generosity of the members and friends ofCentre Street church, we will prevail during this diffrcult time.

Respectfully submitted,Ellen Farnsworth, chair
