Our Burial Options

1

Some of the most emotional moments in life come when someone special to you passes away. Preparing a burial may seem overwhelming. Wollongong Memorial Gardens is here to help.

This brochure will guide you through the various options available at Wollongong Memorial Gardens for burials.

Wollongong is home to a rich and multicultural community. We work to ensure that all cultural, religious and spiritual needs are met in burial or memorial arrangements. There are specified areas for different faiths in the Memorial Gardens as well as non-denominational areas.

Some families may have difficulty knowing how a loved one would have wanted to be honoured. The expense of a burial can also be an added burden in a difficult time. Should you wish to, this brochure can help you to plan ahead. Planning ahead will protect you against future price increases and grant you some peace of mind to know that burial wishes will be met.

There is also the option to select burial sites for the future so family members can be positioned together.

If you would like more information, to discuss the options available or to arrange an appointment, please call us on 4227 7780 or email us at [email protected]. Our staff want to help and are available to fully explain the burial options, including any requirements to pre-arrange.

Wollongong City Council thanks you for considering our Memorial Gardens in this period of decision making and wishes you the best.

This cemetery was opened in 1979. The 50 hectare site is set in leafy surroundings, with majestic trees and vast expanses of lawn. The cemetery has a truly peaceful, tranquil feel and has been earmarked as Wollongong City Council’s ‘Cemetery of the Future’. A master plan has been designed which will ensure the longevity of the site, providing burial options for an estimated further 300 years.

Graves are available for immediate or future use in the following sections starting on page 6.

Frequently Asked QuestionsWhen someone dies, who do I conact to arrange a burial? A funeral director should be contacted. Your funeral director will then contact the office of the Wollongong Memorial Gardens to make your cemetery booking and to inform the cemetery staff which cemetery and which section your require.

If I want to purchase a grave now for future use, who do I contact? In this instance you should contact the office of the Wollongong Memorial Gardens. Our staff will provide the necessary forms and information to assist you in purchasing your pre-need burial site.

Can I have cremated remains placed in an existing grave? Yes, the staff of the Wollongong Memorial Gardens will have the grave checked to ensure the ashes can be interred. Our staff will also check the cemetery records to ascertain who the licensee of the grave is and then provide forms for the licensee to sign. Fees apply for the interment of ashes into a grave.

Who or what is the licensee of a grave? When a grave is purchased, the purchaser is required to sign specific forms. In the event of a burial the person signing the forms for the funeral director will become the licensee of the grave. When the grave is being purchased for pre-need, the person signing the forms with the cemetery staff will become the licensee of the grave. The licensee of the grave is the only person with the authority to make any decisions regarding the grave, such as arranging a burial, a memorial plaque, headstone or monument, or the interment of cremated remains in the grave. It is vey important that families give careful consideration when deciding who will be the licensee of a grave. The licensee should be someone who will be readily available to sign forms when required and someone who can be relied upon to make decisions on behalf of the entire family.

Who maintains the graves? Our cemetery staff are responsible for maintaining the cemetery grounds. We do not maintain memorial plaques, headstones or monuments. These are the sole responsibility of the licensee.

Should I clean the bronze plaque? When visiting the cemetery you may wish to take a container of water with you to wash the bronze plaque. We do not recommend using any kind of cleaning fluid or polish on the plaques. There is a product called ‘Diamond Shield’ which can be used on brand new bronze plaques to keep the plaque looking shiny. This product is available from our plaque manufacturer.

What are the opening hours for the cemeteries? 6am to 5.30pm - standard time 6am to 7pm - daylight savings time

Can I bury my pet in a Wollongong City Council cemetery? No, we do not allow pet burials in any of our cemeteries, nor do we cremate pets at the Wollongong Memorial Gardens crematorium. However, if the pet has already been cremated at a dedicated pet crematorium, the ashes can be placed in the coffin of the deceased prior to burial.
