The Discovery of Cells• What is this junk anyway???

– Well 1st we need to know what is a CELL? Well of course its the smallest unit that can carry on all of life processes…duh

– Why are they important?•They let us know if things are living or not•Some organisms are only one cell, but still very important despite their size

•And best of all…They are pretty to look at!

Well who the devil started this mess???

• Robert Hooke-He invented the light microscope

with magnifying lenses and light rays.

» What did he see? “a great many little boxes” that reminded him of cubicles or “cells” where his monk friends lived…

The other Hook…• Anton van Leeuwenhoek-

sweet name buddy!!!– He rocks because he is the 1st

person to ever see LIVING cells! – He made tiny little baby

microscopes for him and his friends to play with on Friday nights b/c video games weren’t a big thing back then.

– These microscopes had about a 10x magnification and it opened up a whole new world!!!!

And the Plot thickens…• Matthias Schlieden- German dude who said all plants

have cells• Theodor Schwann- Another German dude that hates

the previous German dude and said all animals have cells

• Rudolf Virchow- A third German dude that is a doctor so who cares… and said cells come from cells

• Ver+Put it all together and what do you got?

CELL THEORY!!!!1. All living organisms have one or more cells

2. Cells are the basic structure and function in an organism

3. Cells only come from cells

Basic Parts• Plasma Membrane- the

cells outer boundary…acts as a barrier

• Cytoplasm- the nasty fluidy stuff in a cell. It holds all the organs together… kinda like jello

• Control Center- Cells have to have DNA in them in some way shape form or fashion…usually in a NUCLEUS…the brain of the cell.

Two Major Types• Prokaryotes

– Organism without membrane wrapped parts called organelles

– They don’t have a nucleus so their DNA is concentrated and hangs out together in a little ball.•Examples- Bacteria!!!

• Eukaryotes– Have membrane bound organelles– These organelles have specific jobs that

they do in the cell •Examples- everybody else!
