    Cell Phone Use Wake-up Call

    By

    F. H. Mughal

Cell phones use is now widespread and is used by the majority of population, worldwide. The childrenuse the cell phones, so does the people in low-income groups (cobblers, janitors, sweepers, etc). Nodoubt, they hae reolutionalised the communication technology, and one can contact from any isolatedplace to the loed ones! but, with this conenience, comes a health ha"ard.

Cell phone emits electro-magnetic radiation. #hen a person uses cell phone, these electro-magneticwaes penetrate into the head and brain. $en when the cell phone is not used, it sends electro-magneticwaes into the human body. This obiously is a serious threat to human health. %uman body has its ownelectro-magnetic field and, the waes from the phone interfere with this field.

The electro-magnetic interference triggers headaches and fatigue. &n the long run, it may damage the'N in brain cells, which could lead to cancers, especially brain tumours.

*-based research organi"ation has analy"ed oer + scientific studies on the dangers of cell phoneradiation. ccording to their analysis, + studies identified to per cent increase in ris/ for two typesof brain tumours0 glioma and acoustic neuroma.

1ne study found an increased ris/ of to 2 per cent for saliary gland tumours among people withhighest cell phone use. study of 34,3 'anish children showed 5 per cent eleated ris/ for emotionaland hyperactiity problems among young children who use cell phones and whose mothers also used cellphones during pregnancy.

study of 6+, 'anish adults showed that long-term cell phone users were 3 to + per cent moreli/ely to be hospitali"ed for migraines and ertigo than people who too/ up cell phones more recently.

1ne study from 7erman researchers reeals that using cell phone for just 6 minutes heats up the side ofthe head by as much as 8 degrees. sing a cell phone is li/e slowly coo/ing the head in a microwae.

Cell phone radiation interferes with human bodys 9force field.: ll liing beings hae a natural electric

field. #hile there is limited understanding on what this disruption of energy field will do, it certainly callsfor a great caution.

&t is not the intention of this write-up that people should gie up the use of cell phone, in this age. *omesteps may, howeer, be ta/en to limit radiation e;posure. *ome of the steps are0

uirement on most flights that mobile phones be turned off in case their signals interfere withthe plane?s electronics. This is despite the fact that any such interference has neer been proen. deiceput into airplane mode can still perform other functions that don?t re>uire wireless actiity, such ascamera, games, music player, etc.

*trie, as much as possible, to go 9hands-free.: The further the phone is away from the body, the less isthe radiation penetration in the body. Cell phone should be at least one foot away from the body.

*ince the cell phones hae been around since the last + years, the adults, in the present age, will bee;posed to radiation for relatiely lesser time, considering a life span of years (aerage). s against

this, the children and teenagers will be e;posed for a longer duration. &t is, therefore, essential for theparents to limit the e;posure of children and teenagers, by as/ing them to te;t instead of ma/ing a call.

&t is helpful to send te;t messages, instead of calling (this will sae money also). &f this is not possible, then the calls should be /ept short. se a wired head set for all calls, ensuring that the cord is longenough so the phone is at least one foot away from the body.

$nironmental engineers hae strongly stressed that childrens e;posure to cell phone radiation must belimited, due to the high probability of occurrence of cancer. @esearch by Arance telecom scientists showedthat under standard conditions of use, twice as much cell phone radiation would penetrate a childsthinner, softer s/ull than an adults s/ull. These results confirm earlier findings that childrens head absorbmore radio-fre>uency radiation than adults head.

Children will be e;posed to cell phone radiation for more years and, therefore, in greater total amounts

than the current generation of adults. The best way for the parents would be to sit down with theirchildren and, discuss with them the dangers of cell phone radiation. Conincing and informed discussions, for sure, lead to the behaioral changes among children.
