Mitosis•Interphase (stage before mitosis!)

•G1 + S + G2 = Interphase

• Cell grows, makes more cytoplasm and organelles duplicate, copies DNA, and gets ready to divide

Page 5: Cell Cycle & Mitosis

Prophase

•Chromosomes shorten & thicken

•Centrioles move to opposite poles of the cell

•Spindle fibers extend from the centrioles toward each chromosome

•Nuclear membrane dissolves

Page 6: Cell Cycle & Mitosis

Metaphase

•During late prophase chromatids begin to move toward the cell equator (metaphase plate)

•At metaphase the chromatids are aligned at the equator

Page 7: Cell Cycle & Mitosis

Anaphase

•Chromatids begin to move apart, toward opposite poles

Page 8: Cell Cycle & Mitosis

Telophase

•Chromosomes reach opposite poles of the cell

•Spindle fibers dissolve

•Nuclear membrane reforms at each end of the cell

Page 9: Cell Cycle & Mitosis

Cytokinesis•Cytokinesis = splitting of the

cytoplasm

•Not an actual “phase of mitosis”.

•The division of cytoplasm after separation of the chromosomes

•In plant cells, a new cell wall forms to divide the two daughter cells (CELL PLATE)

•In animal cells, the cleavage furrow forms
