• Period of growth and normal activity

• Nucleolus may be visible • Chromatin is uncoiled and “relaxed” • DNA and centrioles replicate • Cell prepares for mitosis • Third phase of mitosis • The centromeres split • Spindle fibers shorten and pull the

chromosomes apart • The chromosomes are pulled toward

opposite poles of the cell

• First and longest phase of mitosis • Chromatin coils and condenses • Centriole pairs move to opposite

poles of the cell • Spindle fibers are formed • Nuclear envelope breaks down

• Fourth and final phase of mitosis • Nuclear envelope forms around each

set of chromosomes • Chromosomes uncoil • Nucleolus becomes visible • Spindle fibers disappear

• Second phase of mitosis • Spindle fibers attach to the

chromosomes at the centromere • Chromosomes are moved and

aligned across the middle of the cell

• Division of the cell cytoplasm and completes the cell cycle

• Occurs at the same time as telophase

• Results in two identical daughter cells
