In a first for an Arab nation, the Kingdom of Saudi Ara-bia will today host its first

G20 Summit under the shadow of a raging pandemic.

The Summit, usually an opportunity for one-on-one engagements between world leaders, this year will be a vir-tual event. The 15th meeting of G20 Leaders, also the second in 2020, will be held in brief on-line sessions on pressing global issues, from climate change to growing inequality.

The two-day Summit chaired by Saudi Arabia has the theme “Realising the Opportunities of 21st Century for All”.

World leaders, from German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Chinese President Xi Jinping

and Russian leader Vladimir Putin, are expected to make speeches. Indian Prime Min-ister Narendra Modi will be attending the Summit where the focus will be on “an inclu-sive, resilient, and sustainable recovery from the COVID-19.”

The highly effective coro-navirus vaccine candidate of Pfizer and BioNTech,

for which Bahrain placed an or-der for 1 million doses, is on the verge of getting US emergency approval.

Reports say Pfizer and BioN-Tech are to submit an emergency use authorisation for its vaccine candidate known as BNT162b2.

If the FDA authorises, the vac-cines can be immediately dis-tributed.

The news came as Manaf Al Qahtani, a member of National Medical Taskforce for Combat-ing the Coronavirus, revealed that Bahrain made an order for the vaccine last August.

The order, Al Qahtani said, is for 1 million doses.

The final analysis of trial con-ducted by Pfizer found that its vaccine was 95 per cent effective in preventing infections, even in older adults, and caused no serious concerns.

Emergency use authorisation, or EUA, from the FDA, is not the same as a full approval. A EUA allows products to be used under particular circumstances before

all the evidence is available for approval, said a CNN report.

Al Qahtani said Bahrain’s or-der for vaccine followed a deci-sion by the National Taskforce for Combating COVID-19, which is keeping a keen eye on related development going on around the world.

The order for 1 million doses followed the promising data of the vaccine candidate.

According to the company, the vaccine requires two doses a few weeks apart, and protection is achieved 28 days after the first shot.

The CNN report also points out that the Pfizer vaccine is particularly complicated, since it must be stored at minus 75 degrees Celsius, and doctors’ offices and pharmacies typical-ly do not have freezers that go

Bahrain is now holding a Phase 3 clinical trial for a poten-tial COVID-19 vaccine candidate by China’s Sinopharm.

Sinopharm’s chairman told media this week that nearly a million people have now re-ceived their vaccine for emer-gency use.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, a staunch Trump de-fender, will be present in Saudi Arabia during the Summit.

It was unclear whether Trump will speak at the event alongside world leaders, many

of whom have already congrat-ulated his rival, President-elect Joe Biden.

Top of the Group of 20 ma-jor economies’ agenda is a COV-ID-19 action plan and measures to stem the pandemic’s impact on global economies, includ-ing debt relief for the poorest countries.

G20 nations have contributed more than $21 billion to combat the pandemic, including pro-duction and distribution of vac-cines, and injected $11 trillion to “safeguard” the virus-battered world economy, organisers said.

Last week, G20 finance minis-ters declared a “common frame-work” for an extended debt re-structuring plan for virus-rav-aged countries, but campaign group Action Aid described the measure as “woefully inade-quate”.

India and Saudi Arabia have re-solved the issue of the wrong-

ful depiction of India’s territo-rial boundaries on the 20 Riyal banknote that was introduced to commemorate the Kingdom’s presidency of the G20 summit.

According to India Today TV, the currency has been “with-drawn” and the printing of it has been “stopped”.

Saudi Arabia swiftly moved to handle the issue after Indian en-voy to Riyadh Ambassador Aus-

The map showed the whole of Jammu and Kashmir, includ-

Addressing a media briefing on Thursday, Ministry of Exter-nal Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said, “We had taken up the matter of incorrect depiction of the Indian bound-aries with the Saudi authorities and we have taken it up both here in New Delhi as well as in Riyadh. We have been informed by the Saudi authorities that they have noted our concerns in this matter.”

Sources have told India To-day TV that the matter has been handled and the currency which was meant to be a “souvenir and not for circulation, has been withdrawn.”

Brawl: Court gives man one year suspended jail term

• Forensic report said the victim suffered a 10 per cent permanent disability

A one year suspended jail term is awarded to a man

found guilty of attacking and causing permanent disability to another during a brawl.

The accused, a Bahraini man, in his fifties, received a stay on the execution of the sentence for three years.

Incidents leading to the case occurred on 28 Decem-ber 2019.

Court files say both the men got into a fight with the first accused inflicting injuries to the second accused, causing

him permanent disability. A forensic report said the

victim suffered a 10 per cent disability, as a result of the fight.

The quarrel took place at the Rashid Equestrian Club, where both the accused own stables and visited the club frequently.

Reportedly, a dispute oc-curred between the men back then, with them taking the is-sue to the CEO of the club.

From there both of them went to the car park, where they entered into an alterca-tion, and ended up attacking each other.

The attack resulted in the second accused suffering a 10 pc disability on his hand, ac-cording to medical records.

Both of them also blamed each other for starting the fight.

Attempt to smuggle Can-nabis immersed in Halva, a dense sweet confection,

to Bahrain landed a man in po-lice custody.

The “sweet” incident oc-curred in Cochin International Airport in the South India state

of Kerala. A native of Kasaragod in Ker-

ala Sudeesh (21), according to a regional daily, landed in custo-dy yesterday with 10 grams of Cannabis.

Central Industrial Security Force officers, who grew suspi-

cious at the passenger’s Halva box, found the Cannabis hidden inside the confection. Halva is a dense, sweet confection origi-nating in the Middle East.

Baggage checksCISF officers caught the sus-

pect during regular airport se-curity baggage checks, reports Malayala Manorama, a local daily.

During interrogation, Sudeesh claimed no knowledge of the drugs hidden and told officers that he was given the box by

the relatives of a friend here in Bahrain.

“It was for my friend in Bah-rain, I am innocent,” Sudeesh told officers.

CISF handed over the case to Nedumbasseri police for legal action.

Woman gets five years, BD3,000 fine for drug trafficking• The suspect is a Bahraini national

A Bahraini court jailed a woman for five years and

fined her 3,000 dinars for deal-ing with narcotic and psycho-tropic drugs in the Kingdom.

The woman, a Bahraini na-

tional, the Fourth High Crim-inal Court found, in her fifties was sending the substance to her contact in another country.

Police, during a raid, seized more than 100 grams of the psy-chotropic substance from her residence.

The prosecution accused her of dealing with psychotrop-ic substance “methampheta-mine” and diazepam as well as using it.

Anti-Narcotics Department made the arrest based on a tip-off received saying that a woman is engaged in promot-ing narcotic drugs and psy-chotropic substances in the Kingdom.

Based on the information, the department formed an inves-tigation team to confirm the authenticity of information and obtained a warrant to search the home of the suspect.

The search, held with female police officers, at the woman’s residence, resulted in seizing a bag containing the crystal sub-stance.

BD 9.3 million King Hamad street project nearing completion

• The project expands the street into a three-lanes

The construction works of King Hamad Street devel-

opment project has entered its final stages, said the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs, and Urban Planning.

The project, which expands the street into a three-lane, cov-ers its intersection with the 96th street to that with Askar.

Asphalting and paving works

of the street are currently ongo-ing, the ministry said.

According to the ministry, the

project requires the closure of the paths, which is mostly being carried out during the weekends

when there is minimal traffic movement compared to week-days.

Works include the construc-tion of a rainwater drainage net-work, construction of an open

canal along the western side of King Hamad Street, paving roads in the applicable layers to the as-phalt layer, the development of sidewalks, placing lighting poles, traffic lights and installation of safety barriers on both sides of the road.

Works are also progressing to build a concrete barrier separat-ing the ways to raise the level of traffic safety.

Cops arrest man for robbery attempts TDT | Manama

Police arrested a suspect-ed burglar after several

people alleged him of peeking inside houses with an intent to steal.

The Director-General of the Southern Governorate Police Department announced the arrest of the 22-year-old Asian national.

The top cop said the suspect roamed around residential ar-eas, scanning houses there, looking for a potential target.

People found him check-ing houses and even opening windows of some of them and peeking inside.

At some of the houses, peo-ple also accuse the suspect of attempting to break-in. Video clips circulated showed the man opening windows and

peeking inside houses. Based on which police swift-

ly formed a team to investigate the matter.

The investigation resulted in identifying the suspect, where officers took him into custody for further questioning.

The Director-General said the department referred the case to Public Prosecution for legal action.

Bahrain’s National Bureau for Revenue is looking forward to purchasing IT

solutions for the implementa-tion of International Taxation standards.

The deal is according to a tender placed by the Bureau with the Tender Board of Bahrain.

The board announced that three companies are compet-ing for the contract for which the lowest bidder is Digimap Ltd and the highest bidder is BearingPoint International IT Solutions Center.

Digimap Ltd quoted BHD 252,500.000, and Bearing-Point International IT Solu-tions Center is asking BHD 1,841,750.000 to take up the work.

The move emerged as the tender board opened 133 bids received for 17 tenders placed by various ministries and authori-ties in the Kingdom.

Two 4 star Boutique hotels Bilaj Al-Jazayer Real estate

development company is plan-ning to construct two four-star boutique hotels and Beach Club at Bilaj Al Jazayer.

The company’s tender to award the contract found 24 takers. However, the tender board website says, it suspend-ed 14 of them. Bid values are also not disclosed.

Bilaj Al-Jazayer also had an-other tender seeking securi-

ty and safety services at Bilaj Al Jayaer (private and public beach).

Ten interested parties came forward, of which three stands rejected. The highest bidder is Almoayyed Security (BHD 406,350.000), and the lowest bidder is Kingdom Security Protection Services WLL (BHD 105,386.400)

committee opened three bids for a tender by the Bahrain Petroleum Company (Bapco) for the sale and removal of a basement barge and its spare parts.

Bapco also had two other contracts: a five year purchase agreement for catalyst dump-ing and recharging of NO:2 Poly Plant Reactors and a three-year contract for non-destructive inspection services. First one re-ceived four bids and the second one nine bids.

tenders for Tatweer Petroleum, the first for providing medical services and ambulance nurs-es for three years, for which received four bids. The second was for the supply of Emerson flowmeter or equivalent, also received four bids.

opened a bid for Bahrain Real Estate Investment Company (Edama) for leasing a prop-erty in Hamad Town with an area of 1,781.8 square me-ters. The tender attracted two bids.

Thursday night, Batelco’s headquarter campus in Hamala saw around 300

customers line-up to be the among the first to collect the new iPhone 12. The event was attended by Batelco’s executive

management team, including CEO Mikkel Vinter who person-ally handed the new iPhone to the first Batelco customer that night.

India’s Gland Pharma jumps in market debutReuters | Begaluru

Shares of India’s Gland Phar-ma got off to a flying start in

their market debut yesterday, rising as much as 23 per cent and highlighting a strong ap-petite for drug stocks.

The Hyderabad-based com-pany opened at 1,710 rupees per share, after its stock was priced at 1,500 rupees in In-dia’s largest initial public offer-ing by a drugmaker, giving it a market value of 279.21 billion rupees.

Pharma stocks are on a tear this year, with the Nifty Phar-ma Index up nearly 44pc, far outpacing the 5pc rise in the benchmark NSE Nifty 50 index.

Growth in the Indian phar-maceutical market bounced back to pre-pandemic levels in October, helped by cardiac, gastroenterology and derma-tology markets, Prabhudas Lil-ladher analysts said in a note on Tuesday.

“(Gland) has never received a negative USFDA report. The future prospects are bright as it has 267 ANDA filings of which 215 are approved,” said Hemang Jani, equity strategy head, broking and distribution, at Motilal Oswal Financial Ser-vices Ltd.

The company offered 43.2 million shares in the IPO, in-cluding a fresh issue of 8.3 mil-lion shares, the proceeds from which will be used to fund capital expenditure needs. It raised 64.80 billion rupees ($873.79 million).

For the year ended March 31, Gland posted a profit of 7.73 billion rupees and reve-nue from operations of 26.33 billion rupees.

Some of Gland’s custom-ers include companies such as Novo Nordisk and Viatris, John Christopher, practice head of business intelligence, pharma, at GlobalData told Reuters.

Kotak Mahindra Capital, Citigroup Global Markets India and Nomura Financial Advisory and Securities (In-dia) were among the lead book runners for Gland’s IPO.

rebounded in the third quarter from COVID-19 lockdowns, but predicted a slowdown at the end of 2020.

The WTO said its goods trade barometer had risen to 100.7 points from a record low of 84.5 points in August, driven by a surge in export orders. A read-ing greater than 100 indicates above-trend growth.

“The latest reading indicates a strong rebound in trade in the third quarter as lockdowns were eased, but growth is likely to slow in the fourth quarter as pent-up demand is exhaust-ed and inventory restocking is completed,” the WTO said.

The WTO said the outlook for trade was uncertain, with a sec-ond wave of COVID-19 infections leading to renewed lockdowns in Europe and North Ameri-ca that could trigger another round of business closures.

The WTO goods trade ba-rometer is a composite of data, with indices on export orders and agricultural raw-materi-al trade above medium-term trends, container shipping and automotive goods at trend and air freight and electronic com-ponents trade below.

The barometer is designed to anticipate turning points and gauge momentum in glob-al trade growth within a few months, although the WTO said

uncertainty meant it may be less reliable.

It cited higher-frequency data pointing to a stalled re-covery of international flights and container shipping in Oc-tober, but improved economic sentiment reflected by prices of copper futures and analysis of news reports.

The latter showed an im-provement in tone following announcements on effective vaccines in early November.

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip celebrated their 73rd wedding

anniversary yesterday, an occasion they were unable to share with their family during England’s current coronavirus lockdown.

Elizabeth, 94, and Philip, 99, married in London’s Westminster Abbey on Nov. 20, 1947, just two years after the end of World War Two.

“Thank you to everyone for your kind wishes on the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh’s 73rd Wedding Anniversary,” Buckingham Palace said on Twitter.

To mark the occasion, the palace re-leased a photograph of a smiling mon-arch and her husband looking at a card made by her great-grandchildren Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, alongside other cards and letters from well-wishers.

The picture was taken at Windsor Castle, the queen’s home west of London

where the couple are staying during the lockdown.

In a nod to their early days of marriage, Elizabeth was wearing a chrysanthe-mum brooch, made of sapphires and

diamonds, that she wore for pictures taken at Broadlands in southern England during the first part of their honeymoon.

The couple first met when they at-tended the wedding of Philip’s cousin,

Princess Marina of Greece, to Elizabeth’s uncle, the Duke of Kent, in 1934.

Philip gained the attention of his fu-ture wife when the then-13-year-old princess made a visit with her parents to Britain’s Royal Naval College at Dart-mouth in southwest England where he was a cadet.

While royal watchers say Elizabeth and Philip have had their ups and downs, they have avoided the travails of three of their four children whose marriages have ended in divorce, most notably Charles’s ill-fated union with his late first wife Princess Diana.

“The main lesson that we have learned is that tolerance is the one essential in-gredient of any happy marriage,” Philip said in a speech on their 50th wedding anniversary in 1997.

“It may not be quite so important when things are going well, but it is absolutely vital when things get difficult - you can take it from me that the queen has the quality of tolerance in abundance.”

Georgia confirmed Dem-ocratic President-elect Joe Biden as the winner

of the Nov. 3 election in the state as it completed a hand audit of ballots, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said.

The audit, launched after un-official results showed Biden leading Republican President Donald Trump by about 14,000 out of more than 5 million votes cast, ended with Biden winning by 12,284, according to data from Raffensperger’s office.

“The audit confirmed that the original machine count accu-rately portrayed the winner of the election,” the secretary of state’s office said in a statement on Thursday evening.

The changes to the vote totals were “well within the expected margin of human error that oc-

curs when hand-counting bal-lots,” it said.

Biden was the first Demo-cratic presidential candidate to carry Georgia since Bill Clinton in 1992. Biden has captured 306 electoral votes to Trump’s 232 in the state-by-state Electoral Col-lege that determines the winner of the election, well above the 270 needed for victory.

Raffensperger, a Republican, was expected to formally certify

Biden’s victory, despite pressure from Trump, who has claimed without evidence that there were widespread irregularities and fraud in states that he lost to Biden, including Georgia.

The state’s Republican US senators, David Perdue and Kel-ly Loeffler, who both face runoff elections in January, have joined with Trump in accusing Raffen-sperger, without evidence, of overseeing a flawed election,

an allegation Raffensperger has disputed.

Raffensperger told a local TV station that the Trump cam-paign had not produced evi-dence to back up its claims of fraud in the state.

“We have not seen any evi-dence they have given us, an-ything that supports - it just doesn’t show up,” Raffensperger told WSB-TV.

Trump’s campaign can still request a recount in Georgia after the results are certified because the margin of victory was less than 0.5%.

Indias Prime Minister Naren-dra Modi held a review meet-ing with top security brass

in the wake of the killing of four Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists in Jammu, and asserted that secu-rity forces have thwarted their efforts to wreak “major havoc and destruction.”

Government sources said that the terrorists were planning “something big” on the anniver-sary of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack.

In his tweets following the meeting, Modi said, “Neutral-ising of 4 terrorists belong-ing to Jaish-e-Mohammed and the presence of large cache of weapons and explosives with them indicate that their efforts to wreak major havoc and de-struction have once again been thwarted.”

Hailing the security forces, he

said they have once again dis-played utmost bravery and pro-fessionalism.

“Thanks to their alertness, they have defeated a nefarious plot to target grassroots level democratic exercises,” the prime minister added.

In the review meeting, Home Minister Amit Shah, NSA Ajit Dov-al, foreign secretary and top intel-

ligence officials were present as Modi took stock of the situation.

The US National Science Foun-dation announced it will close

down the massive space telescope at Puerto Rico’s Arecibo Observa-tory, ending 57 years of astronom-ical discoveries after suffering two destructive mishaps in recent months.

Operations at the observatory, one of the largest in the world,

were halted in August when one of its supportive cables slipped loose from its socket, falling and gashing a 100-foot-long (30 me-ter) hole in its 1,000-foot wide reflector dish.

Another cable then broke earli-er this month, tearing a new hole in the dish and damaging nearby cables as engineers scrambled

to devise a plan to preserve the crippled structure.

“NSF has concluded that this recent damage to the 305-meter telescope cannot be addressed without risking the lives and safety of work crews and staff,” Sean Jones, assistant director of the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Directorate at NSF, said.

Elton John wants to “normalise the con-

versation” around mental health.

The ‘Tiny Dancer’ hit-maker has joined a cam-

paign run by MAN magazine to speak out about men-

tal health alongside a host of other celeb-rity faces, which has been set up to raise awareness about the stigma

surrounding the topic, particu-larly in men, for International Men’s Day on Thursday.

In a message to those suffering with their mental health, Elton told the publication: “You are not alone and you are loved. This has been an unprecedented year but I want you to know that it is okay to admit you are struggling and need some help. We need to talk about mental health to normalise the conversation, es-pecially with men.

“I am thinking of you if you are struggling and hope you find

healing love and support.”Other celebrities taking part in

the campaign include presenter, comedian, and actor Stephen Fry, footballer Harry Kane, and tennis superstar Sir Andy Mur-ray.

Stephen said: “You’re not alone in your struggle, however much you may feel it now. Trust me when I say the day will come when you will hug yourself for winning the struggle and stay-ing up and on your feet. Damn it’s hard, but damn it’s worth it.”

Whilst Harry added: “I want to encourage anyone suf-fering from mental health is-sues to seek the support they need. There’s no shame in it. We all need to ask for help sometimes.”

The publication also featured an interview with actor and co-median Russell Brand - who has battled with his mental health in the past, as well as with addic-tion - who said he managed to overcome his own struggles by developing an “awareness” for his actions.

sonable Behaviour.’According to Variety, the film is based on

The film is being bankrolled by Tom Hardy and Dean Baker under their Hardy Son and Baker banner along with the Working Title Films’ Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner. The film is

being executive produced by McCullin and Mark George.

to name the managers pres-surising their players to pull out of international duty as he suspects Manchester City’s Ra-heem Sterling will be fit to start against Tottenham on Saturday.

Southgate hinted several times during the recent interna-tional break that some players faced pressure from their clubs to withdraw from his squad.

Sterling withdrew from the squad with an injury niggle which Southgate would not elaborate on, while Spurs strik-er Harry Kane played all-but 14 minutes of the Three Lions’ two Nations League fixtures.

“Gareth Southgate, I read, supposedly told that some foot-ball club managers put pressure on their players not to play for the national team,” Mourinho said at his pre-match press con-ference yesterday.

“And because of that he feels the need sometimes to call club managers to try and cool down the emotions and cool down difficult situations for him.

“I would like him to say who. I would like him to say which are the coaches who put pres-sure on the players not to go. And I would like him to say which are the coaches that he calls and speaks on the phone with them.”

Sterling also withdrew from England’s internationals in Oc-tober, but then scored the win-ner against Arsenal in the first match after the international break.

“We all know Sterling will play tomorrow,” added Mour-inho.

“When Eric Dier left the national team injured in the previous month, he didn’t play two matches for Tottenham. He didn’t play a Premier League match and a Europa League match.

Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khal-ifa sent a message of congratu-lations today to Bahrain Motor Federation (BMF) President Shaikh Abdulla bin Isa bin Mohammed Al Khalifa on his appointment as Chairman of the BMF Board of Directors until 2024.

The appointment was made by Supreme Council for Youth and Sports First Vice-Chair-man and Bahrain Olympic Committee President His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa. HH Shai-kh Khalid also named the members of the board who will serve in their posts for the four-year term of 2020 to 2024.

Shaikh Salman commented: “On behalf of the BIC family, I congratulate Shaikh Abdul-la bin Isa bin Mohammed Al Khalifa on his appointment as BMF Board of Directors Chairman and the board mem-

bers for the term of 2020 to 2024.

Novak Djokovic out-bat-tled Alexander Zverev to qualify for the last

four at the ATP Finals yesterday, staying on track to match Roger Federer’s record of six titles at the end-of-season event.

The Serbian top seed, who was beaten comprehensively by Daniil Medvedev in his second round-robin match, was again below his best at London’s O2 Arena but did enough to win 6-3, 7-6 (7/4).

The five-time winner finishes second in Group Tokyo 2020 behind Medvedev and will play third-seed Dominic Thiem in the semi-finals on Saturday.

Second-seed Rafael Nadal, seeking his first win at the elite eight-man event, will face Med-vedev in the other semi-final after finishing second in Group London 2020.

Djokovic broke Germany’s Zverev at the first time of asking in the empty stadium and raced into a 3-0 lead, threatening to run away with the match -- a repeat of the 2018 final, which Zverev won in straight sets.

The 33-year-old looked fo-cused after his uncharacteristic mauling by Medvedev, serving himself out of trouble when he found himself trailing 15-40 in the seventh game.

That proved to be the last chance for Zverev in the set and 17-time Grand Slam winner Djokovic hammered a backhand winner down the line to take it 6-3.

Djokovic handed Zverev a break point in the fourth game of the second set after dou-ble-faulting but the German could not capitalise.

The 23-year-old fifth seed saved two break points on his serve in the following game, letting out a roar as he kept his nose in front.

The set went to a tie-break. Zverev earned an early mi-ni-break but Djokovic levelled and the pressure was back on the German, who faltered to hand the Serbian victory.

Djokovic , who recently equalled Pete Sampras’s record of six year-end number one fin-ishes, has the chance to end the coronavirus-truncated 2020 season on a high by joining the absent Federer on six titles.

Victorious had additional reasons to celebrate yesterday, aside from

Simsir winning the second edition of the Bahrain International Trophy at Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club (REHC).

Victorious-owned horses won three of the other six cups in the day’s sev-en-race card, including one Bapco Cup and two Bahrain Economic Develop-ment Board (EDB) Cups.

Victorious’ Bapco Cup was claimed in yesterday’s sixth race, in which Buffer Zone took first place after running the

five-furlong straight in 57.771 seconds. The Hesham Al Haddad-trained five-year-old was ridden by David Egan. Koncheck came second by a length while Roman River was third.

The two Bahrain EDB Cups were claimed in the fourth and first races by Victorious-owned horses.

In race number four, Macaque was in first place after completing the eight-furlong distance in 1:35.195. Trained by Al Haddad, Macaque was ridden by Abdulla Faisal. Mushtaq and Beauchamp Bagenal were second and third, respectively.

In the first race, Tuwaisaan 1762,

trained by Yousif Taher and ridden by Abdulla Faisal, won over six furlongs in 1:23.662. Al Saqlaawy 1772 was the runner-up while Al Mlolesh 1748 came third.

Elsewhere yesterday, Al Tariq was the winner in the fifth race to claim a Batelco Cup for Abdulla Fawzi Nass, Al Haddad and Adrie De Vries; Alejandro was first in race three for the other Batelco Cup representing Al Adiyat Racing, Alan Smith and Andre Atzeni; and Saheel clinched yesterday’s other Bapco Cup in race two for His Highness Shaikh Hamad bin Abdulla bin Isa Al Khalifa, James Naylor and Abdulla Faisal.

Locally trained Simsir held off the fast-finishing Global Giant and Sover-

eign to claim the second-ever running of the £500,000 Bah-rain International Trophy yes-terday at Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club (REHC).

REHC High Committee deputy chairman His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa was in attendance.

Simsir, trained by Fawzi Nass in the stables next to the Sakhir racecourse, was ridden by Scots-man Lee Newman, and was hav-ing his first run in Bahrain after being bought out of Michael Halford’s yard in the Autumn.

Dettori just came up short in his attempt to reel in the win in the last furlong, and in doing so finished as runner-up for HH Shaikh Isa and John Gosden.

Nass also ran the better-fan-cied Port Lions, who finished fourth.

Nass was thrilled to win the high-profile event for Victorious Racing and was quick to praise his jockey.

Nass said: “To win such an amazing race is an absolute thrill. He has done it so bravely. Mick Halford always assured me that he likes it firm and he was right. For me, it was the jock-ey’s race. I thought he commit-ted early in the straight, but he proved me wrong.”

Newman, who was Champion Apprentice in the UK in 2000, had broken his back and his neck in a career that has spanned across the globe, and was very appreciative of getting the call-up from Nass.

Newman said: “I took the bull by the horns at the five-furlong pole and kicked on from there. It’s a track that you can do that

at if your horse is a galloper, and he is that.

“It is down to Fawzi for put-ting his trust in me as he could have asked any jockey from any-where in the world, but he asked me. I am delighted.”
