    Introduction

    Dear Fabulous Friend,

Where ever you live and whatever your weight, the pressure to be slim is so intense you probably wish thatyou looked a little thinner and more toned.

The greatest frustration is that safe and sensible weight loss takes time. Often it is accompanied with theadded problem that shopping has become a challenge. While working on your diet and exercise regime, you can use these tips to hide those extra pounds with clever dressing and the use of appropriateaccessories.

Three tips on being fashionable:1. One piece is plenty. By simply pairing a T-shirt in the latest colour or a skirt in the newest shape

with the classic piece you already own, youll instantly get a fresh look.2. Choose a trendy shape or colour never both.3. Wear only the trends that suit you. Choosing only styles that make you look and feel great is what

    makes you appear stylish.

We do not believe all those fashion editors who tell fuller figured women that these days anything goes andthey can wear whatever they like, however bright or bold the colour. While the advice maybe wellintended, careless dressing only draws more attention to problem areas.

The underlining principle of our slimming tips is to work with the body you have right now. This meansassessing exactly what are the good bits, your assets and your bad bits, those challenging areas. Run fromhead to toe and consider what you like and what is attractive. It maybe your wrists, shoulders, eyes, breasts, calves or ankles, that you consider your best assets. Conversely we consider those challenge areassuch as short torso, large midriff, chunky thighs and bottom.

To create a new slimmer you, it is necessary to highlight your assets, eyes, neck, wrists and camouflage thechallenge areas. Camouflage allows the eye to run over a area without the eye stopping and drawingattention to that area, secondly the eye is drawn deliberately to another area by a well placed focal point oraccessory.

Keep it simple, not too fussy and you will be turning heads in no time.

    Enjoy and look after yourself,

Rachel QuiltyPS: Always remember A persons appearance captures your attention and their personality capturesyour heart.

    Four Basic Fashion Rules

Dressing like a star becomes easy when you apply a fewsimple rules.

    1. Create a long vertical line through the body

The aim is for the eye to run up the body with minimaldisruption. Therefore it is important to avoid linebreaks. The eye stops each time it confronts a linebreak; the image is jarring and unattractive. Let usexplain what a line break is: It is any division of colouror detail that breaks up the line of your body. These areusually at the hem of a garment.

Stark colour contrasts draw the eye and form horizontal lines that divide your body, making it appear widerand shorter. An extreme example may be a white shirt, red belt, blue skirt and bone shoes. This wouldcreate four line breaks, and the woman in this outfit would look shorter, boxier and heavier than sheactually is.

One way to avoid this is to take the entire outfit you have decided to wear, lay it on the bed, placingaccessories appropriately and consider how many times you eye is stopped by a li ne break. If you mustwear a belt ensure it is in the same colour as the garment below.

The slimmer and taller you want to appear, the fewer times your eye should stop. One or two line breaksare fine. Concentrate on simple and elegant combinations such as a monochromatic look that helps the eyeglide right over trouble spots. Its this illusion that makes one colour dressing the backbone of many astylish womans wardrobe.

    2. Focus attention upwards

When people are looking at your beautiful complexion, your sparkling eyes and your flattering hair style, they are not looking at the rest of you. An instant slimming technique! When eyes are focussed on yourface we are less likely to notice or remember anything below the bust line.

Attracting attention away from other areas and towards the vital v or dcolletage and face will ensure youare remembered for the right reasons.

By strategically placing a paler or brightly coloured piece near or over a part of your body that you like, youre making sure it gets the attention it deserves.

    3. Balancing your body shape

It is important to understand your body shape and determine how you balance it to create an hour glassfigure. This may be done with accessories, the style of a garment or colour placement. You can pair brightwith dark colours to balance your body. If youre small on top and heavier on the bottom, for example a hotpink T-shirt worn with a black skirt will give you a more proportioned look as long as the line created by thedivide between the pieces lands over one of your leaner parts.

The length of your legs in relation to your torso, the width of your shoulders in relation to your hips areissues that matter to your overall appearance and must be carefully considered.

    4. Pay attention to proportion

Another key matter to consider when dressing so that you look slimmer and taller is proportion. Prints, patterns, accessories should be in proportion to your real size. Simple, well proportioned jewellery placedhigh will draw the eye and enliven the outfit, but wont cause a line break and interfere with the slimmer, taller impression the outfit creates.

While proportion relates to items in relation to your bone and body size there are also proportional issuesrelating to your torso to leg ratio. Professional Image Consultants are trained in accurately measuring andgauging the best style and proportions for your body shape and bone structure and produce a personalisedstyle portfolio, which will provide the most comprehensive personalised informat ion. That would be thenext step in your style evolution.

Dressing with style involves more than just wearing what you like. It takes strategy. By using your clothingsfit, fabric, colour, details, pattern and proportionto lengthen, slim and direct attention to exactlywhere you want it and away from where youdont, youll be able to create a look that is bothflattering and in keeping with your personality.

Now with those basic principles in mind thefollowing secret tactics used by celebrities, mediapersonalities and glamorous fashion models willmake a lot of sense. Creating a great style is reallyabout illusion dressing. No ones body is perfect even the most attractive model will identify herflaws and body challenges, although they may notbe the same as yours and mine.

Looking youthful and vital, can melt away pounds as people focus on your glowing face and beautiful eyes. The best tip is to use make up to make yourself look healthy. The real skill is making your skin look reallyamazing, concealing blemishes and pigmentations without lookinglike youve got make up on.

Ensure your eye brows are well groomed and shaped to open theeye and align the face.

Contouring your face with slightly darker shades of powder alongboth sides of your face, from peak to either side of the chinbrushed along hairline can diminish fullness in the face.Highlighting with lighter shades on cheek bones above blush, brow bones just below eyebrow on outer edge and a line from thecupids bow on the top lip to tip on nose can enhance areas.

Make up is amazing for camouflaging imperfections, fullness, andhighlighting hair, eyes and skin. Up date your look with a make uptuition class with professionals who can identify your skin tone and the most flattering colours.

    Your Dcolletage or Vital V

Wearing the correct fitting bra can minimise and hold breasts pert and well shaped. Have a fitting in alingerie store or department with a certified bra fitting specialist. A well supporting bra will also enhanceyour posture and reduce the volume of your bust. A well fitted bra can smooth and enhanc e thedcolletage area. AccessoriesThe quickest and most effective way to accomplish a stylish appearance is with accessories. Deciding whichtypes of accessories suit you depends very much on the size of your bones, proportion and personality.

Keep your accessories in tune with what you wear. Accessories can also give you an updated look withoutextensive wardrobe shopping and breaking the budget.

Once you know your style, but want to be fashionable, give more attention to accessories.

For a general rule of thumb: the larger the pattern or accessories you wear, the larger you'll appear to be.Medium is the safest size if you're in doubt as it suits everybody. Small accessories can make you appearlarger than you are. Wearing medium to medium large accessories will form a favourable contra st betweenthe size of the accessories and your size.

Study fashion magazines, catalogues andwindow displays for ideas. Make note ofhow a jacket might be worn a littledifferently, what colours it is combinedwith or how an accessory might be wornin a new fashion.

HatsCreate height with a upturned brim andhigh crown. A wider brim can giveproportion to your face and shoulders, and flatter rather than enlarge them.

Wear larger hats, but make sure they are worn off centre. Placed flat and straight on your head, they createa line that is broadening. The brim should never be wider than your shoulder width.

Keep hat and hair ornamentation in proportion with your hat or hairstyle. Dont put skinny little ribbons ortiny pins on your hat. Make the trim large but simple.

Your face shape will also determine the best hat style for you. As a general rule: A medium brimmed, straight or upward curved hat will make you appear taller A medium to medium-wide brimmed, straight hat will de-emphasise full hips and thighs

JewelleryAvoid big, round accessories as these will only accentuate already rounded proportions.

Go for the angles. Pick geometric shapes triangular earrings, oblong belt buckles, straight, rectangularpins.

Place jewellery off centre rather than under your chin or down thefront of a blouse. Off centre on your lapel, shoulder will be moreattractive and draw the eye away from your figure faults.

RingsJewellery and other accessories should be in proportion to your realsize. Tiny jewellery and small delicate scarves make large people looklarger. Likewise, huge jewellery, glasses and big scarves make smallpeople look smaller. Think Olsen twins.

Large hands look a little more fragile when a larger ring is worn.

EarringsThe shape of your face, the length of the neck and the depth of yourchin has an impact on the shape of earrings that are right for you.

Large round earrings add to the visual perception of a round face. Go for elongated and asymmetric sh apes.Stay away from studs and circular clip-ons. Plain golf ball sized hoops suits everyone.

If the colour of your earrings complements your outfit they can be as sparkly as you like.

NecklaceAvoid pearl or ribbon chokers that cut you off at the neck or make your face appear fuller.

Wearing long necklaces, scarves, chains, ropes of pearls and beads and cords that hang below the bust lineare more flattering. They keep that slim collarbone area open and draw additional attention away from alarge bust.

Short necks appear shorter when wearing collars or chokers. Instead wear pieces that do not take up toomuch space between the chin and breasts. Longer necks can carry something much wider and lookamazing.

Dont wear an over the top necklace and wild earrings unless they are part of a set.

Large busts can carry off a delicate droplet necklace that ends just at the top of the cleavage. Never allow apendant to disappear into cleavage.

Scarves & bowsHang a slim scarf around your neck to create a vertical design feature, extending your torso and neck. Softlyfolded scarves tied loose and falling away from the neckline create the impression of slim and tall. JessicaAlba and Kate Moss have in the past adopted this look.

Scarves may be worn as false tops under jackets which canreduce the volume of layers further.Avoid bows, tight ascots, high pussy bows at the neck as thisadds to the impression of short and heavy. If you are short and yearn for a long scarf, opt for a light weightmaterial or woven silk rather than a thick knit.

HandbagsPrints, patterns, accessories should be in proportion to yourreal size. Huge handbags and accessories make small peoplelook smaller. If you are large, you can handle a larger bag forboth day and evening. Tiny little bags create the wrongproportions. Medium to medium large sized accessories willoften appear balanced.

GlassesCreate a wardrobe of frames you love. Create a SignatureStyle with a frame for different activities or different colours for co-ordinating with various garments.Draw attention away from problem areas and create some interest by keeping people guessing whatglasses youll wear next.

GroomingImmaculate grooming is essential. Poor grooming is often aligned with laziness and can psychologically addpounds. Ensure hair, nails and shoes are clean.

Coco Channel said it best, If a woman is poorly dressed you notice the clothes. If she is impeccably dressedyou notice the women.

    Your Body

Underwear and good foundation wearTo look good, you must invest in some very good underwear. The effects of figure forming underwear are instant and doesnot require hours in the gym.

Anyone with a D cup upwards must realise that a well fittedbra is the most important item in her wardrobe and visuallymake you look slimmer in seconds. The upward and forwardform of a good bra gives you the appearance of a waist and awell proportioned bra.

Wearing a bra with wide back straps, smooths flesh andavoids the ugly appearance of bulges above and below yourbra strap on your back and underarm.

Dont cover up your bust. If you have a full bust, avoid thetemptation to cover up. Instead, wear a properly fitting braand reduce the apparent size of a bust with a V-neckline. Feelexposed, wear a longer necklace to provide a vertical designline and some cover to cleavage.

Celebrities often reference their new body to body shapers such as Spanx and similar to hold in theirproblem areas. Look instantly slimmer with sensible body shaping under garments. An all in one bodyshaping garment creates the desired effect ie. one that is seamless and the clothing worn over it shimsrather than clings.

Shoulder pads will help to camouflage large hips and minimise the size of large busts by eliminating anydrag from shoulder to bust point.

Buy hosiery with a contour panel for extra support. A contoured panel in your pantyhose can lift yourbottom, suck in your tummy and give a smoother line to your thighs.

To conceal a large stomach you need underpants that reach up to your ribcage where there is less flesh. The ultimate solution is a pair of contouring briefs which have built in lift and support. G Strings should onlybe worn under trousers with thicker fabric which offers some support.

G strings and bikini briefs are unflattering. Disguising large thighs and saddlebags is best achieved withbottom and thigh length knickers with extra lycra that will redistribute the flesh around the bottom andthigh area and give you the appearance that you are thinner than you actually are.

TanningMake sure bare legs are fake tanned. An even skin tone makes them appear slimmer and shapelier. No faketan available? Use blusher or bronzing powder in a narrow line up your shin and thigh to accentu ate thebone for a slimming effect.

Tanned skin is not only slimming, it also hides cellulite. Try the new Hollywood trick with spray contouring, where you use lighter and darker shades or less and more coats if self tanning to give the illusion of muscl edefinition and to diminish larger or fuller areas.

Use clever contouring to reduce and define cleavage. Create a vertical design line with slightly darker stripdown full length of legs. Diminish outer edge of thighs andcalves as well as full upper arm with darker shades on outeredges. This creates the illusion of a slimmer, longer leg.

Many celebrities use the Baywatch created salon and self tanning product, Safe Tan.

    Swimsuit Flattery

A swimsuit with a lycra content gives maximumcontrol

A medium high, front seamed swimsuit leg willminimise upper thighs

The higher the leg-cut the longer the legs appear tobe

Medium to dark solid colours, matte fabrics andmedium sized, non-obvious repeat prints are themost slimming

A matching sarong elongates and slims the body

ArmsGive the impression of long slim arms with long, beautifully manicured nails in natural colours.

Wrist and ankles are the smallest parts of your body, so show them off with length sleeves and pants.

PostureGood posture is the best trick ever for gaining extra height. Standup straight to elongate your silhouette or body. The straighteryou stand the taller and slimmer you will appear.

Hold your head up straight as well as your chin for an instantweight-loss solution. Walk tall and lengthen your stride. Shufflingand small steps emphasise a fuller figure. Move with purposeand vitality and people will notice your positive approach andpersonality, not your size.

The walk that models perform actually lengthens their legs. Thisis what you can do, too:

    1. Keep you shoulders back2. Hold your head high3. Push your hips forward when walking4. Place one foot directly in front of the other, where

possible5. Push your pelvis slightly forward and lead with the hips.

WaistlineCreate an hour glass figure with a belt or waist line feature. Alternatively, wear a belt at the slimmest pointof your waist which is often just under the bust. See additional notes under vertical body shape on thecorrect position for your waistline and how to create that look.

BeltsWhen wearing one colour head to toe, dont break it up with a different coloured belt. Avoid wide, contrasting belts which create a line break. A blended colour belt or belt of the same fabric as dress, trousers, or blouse are always more flattering.

Fuller figured women should wear belts under a jacket or cardigan or over blouse with the sleeves rolledup, so little more than the buckle shows. This gives the definition without revealing the wholemeasurement.

Wearing a belt at a problem part will only emphasise the area, by drawing attention to it. A belt worn highon the waist can emphasise and enlarge the bottom half. While a bold belt resting on the hipline can halvethe large bottom area and elongate the torso.

If you are small boned, keep the buckles small or delicate or in proportion with your size. Larger bonedwomen can wear big, bold chunky buckles.

You can wear funky belts with everything as long as they aremonochromatic. Big belts on a large busted woman can look toocomplicated and should be worn lower on the hip with a smallerbuckle. A short torso will appear even shorter with a wide belt.

    Your Body Shape

As we said earlier, by using your clothings fit, fabric, colour, details, pattern and proportion to lengthen, slim and directattention to exactly where you want it and away fromwhere you dont. Youll be able to create a look that is bothflattering and in keeping with your personality.

Lets look at the basics when considering clothing and howit may impact our body shape.

FitEverything you own should fit perfectly. Good fit means thatclothes skim the body, showing curves rather than clingingto them. Small adjustments or alterations can make a bigdifference in your overall appearance.

Wear the right size garments. Clothing should be tailored not tight. Avoid the other extreme of baggy clothing, as these add volume. Wearing leggings and big baggy t-shirts will only emphasise your figure - not hide it! Avoid at all

costs bike pants! Trust me. Purchase clothes for the size you are now.

If youve lost weight, its time to start wearing some better fitting clothes that dont continue to addvolume to your figure. Often a reward for meeting your weight loss goal is to buy a complete newwardrobe. And its tempting to wear your old clothes until youve hit that mark. I say, get rid of themtoday! Buy guilt free inexpensive items that are fashionable, so as you continue to lose weight the itemshave gone out of style and you havent spend a fortune.

The correct fit of garments must be emphasised. This will often require a little extra expense initially topurchase better fitting garments or have the garments altered later.Bust darts are essential in shirts and blouses for women with larger busts. Without adequate darts theadditional fabric to cover these assets can often add unnecessary volume.

Think outside the square, menswear can offer fabulous shirts and vests in excellent quality and fit for alarger busted or full midriff at great value.Women with a large stomach area, can get up to date styles in larger sizes at Maternity stores. Trousers canoften fit better if worn backwards, particularly if a larger stomach is accompanied by a flat bottom.

FabricOften with fabrics you get what you pay for. Cheap fabrics tend to be stiff and less flattering. Higher qualityfabrics look better, last longer and hold their shape better. Fabrics which fall smoothly over the curves ofyour body are the most flattering. If the fabric is too stiff it will be boxy, too thin and it clings to every curve, too bulky or shiny and it will add pounds.

Experiment with various weights of fabric to see which you feel most flatters your shape. Flat knitted garments can accentuate your curves especially if they are too clingy, while heavier or

more textured knits stand away from the body and even out curves but will add a little to a lot ofweight.

Avoid heavy, solid clothing which can make you appear heavy and solid.

DetailsDetails, colour and naked skin can be used to divert attention to a place youd rather emphasis. A skirt witha flounce or handkerchief hem can be used to attract attention to a nice set of legs. Just be wary of toomuch of a good thing. Too much detail not only can create a questionable look it dates clothes, limitstheir versatility and makes you look heavier.

PatternThere a several things you must consider with patterns: colour, size, direction and the effects of stripes.

Colour Similar tones or tonal patterns attract less attention than those in contrasting colours, and thedarker the background, the more slimming the print.

Size Always choose prints that are in scale with your size. A petite figure is more flattered by small, lowcontrast prints, while a taller women can take larger prints with more contrast. Larger women can wearlarger prints but benefit from a low contrast design. A uniform, all over pattern, which keeps the eye fromresting on any one spot, is also a good diversionary tactic for voluptuous bodies.

Direction- Vertical lines are preferable to horizontal lines and diagonal lines that are more vertical thanhorizontal will have the same elongating effect as a true vertical.

Stripes While its generally true that verticals lengthen and slim and that some horizontals will make youlook heavy, the size and spacing of the stripe will impact on this. Horizontals can be used to createbeneficial optical illusions if youre of average size. If the horizontals are thin and widely spaced, they canhave a lengthening effect, while widely spaced vertical stripes can widen.

    Your Horizontal Body Shape

Horizontal body proportion is determined from the ratio between the bust, waist and hip circumference.Horizontal categories are based on proportion and not actual size. Understanding your horizontal body typeallows the discovery of what styles can be employed to balance your body to create the illusion of a more

perfect silhouette. We can start to visually balance the body, for example if one part of your body is narrowand another wide, widening the narrowest area will provide balance and restore visual proportion.

There are six recognised horizontal figure types:

The hourglass The Inverted Triangle The Triangle The Rectangle The Round The Diamond

Which shape are you?Select which body shape best represents your figure and see our dressing tips belo w. The aim or goal withdressing all body types is to create an hour glass or inverted triangle.

The HourglassThis figure is considered the perfect body shape. Clothing is easy to fit and find. Factors such as weight, prominent features and age become increasingly important to be well dressed.

The Inverted TriangleBalance full upper body by increasing the visual width below the waist.

A-line skirts or skirts with patterns or bold textures; Horizontal stripes below the waist and fuller legs in trousers; Minimise the upper body with open necklines and collars, vertical stripes.

The TriangleWidth needs to be created in the upper body to balance the full lower half.

Shoulder pads are her most slimming accessory when worn so they are not apparent; Horizontal neckline; Vertical lines below the waist or through the entire body.

The RectangleVisually thin and lengthen torso. Also create strong shoulder line and the illusion of a waistline

balance can be created by adding shoulder pads; colour blocking to create the illusion of a waistline; semi fitted or slight shape in clothes, soft fabrics tops and matching skirts.

The OvalVisually elongate her body and create an inverted triangular body type.

Vertical lines and designs whenever possible from the top to the bottom; Well fitted bras, support garments for torso and stockings; Dresses that flow through the waistline.

    Your Vertical Body Shape

There are also proportional issues relating to your torso to leg ratio or vertical body shape. Are you shortwaisted (short torso, longer legged), long waisted (long torso, shorter legs), balanced (neither longer norshorter) or perceived to be short waisted (for example, big busted on balanced body can give the illusion ofshort torso, longer legged)?

Generally, to avoid cutting your body right through the middle horizontally, every outfit should be eithershort over long (full) or long over short(narrow). A short jacket over an A-line skirt or a cropped jacketover trousers is one way to achieve the short over long look. Conversely, a long jacket with skinny jeans or atunic over a pencil skirt creates a long over short or narrow outfit. If you are short waisted, look for a lowerwaistline and if you are long waisted, look for a higher one.

Often you know yourself whether you are short or long waisted, however to confirm your horizontal andvertical body shape and the most suitable styles to wear, a Style Analysis or Style Portfolio developed by aProfessional Image and Colour Consultant will have you wearing the correct waistlines for your verticalbody shape and garment styles for your horizontal body shape.

Short waistedAim to create the illusion of a lower waistline and refocus attention from your middle to your face or legs.

Try these suggestions The best jacket length for you is hip length

or longer. Single breasted jackets elongate the torso. A high round neck will make your upper

body look longer. Choose a skirt that hits the knees. Trousers should be low hung, flat fronted

and straight legged. Wear T-shirts and tops that are slim-fitting

and never tuck them in. Monochromatic outfits Lower waisted bottoms Longer shirts and jackets Tops with vertical lines Narrow hip belts that match your top

Avoid Patch pockets and pockets with a strong

horizontal seam Anything that slices at the waist Wide waistbands or belts Anything high-waisted

Heavy BottomAim to show your curves without over-emphasizing them, elongate your figure and balance your shouldersand hips.

Try these suggestions Close fitting tops that float over hips and

cover the hips or stop at the top of the hipbone Dark coloured bottoms Lower waisted bottoms, which de-emphasize the

curve of the hip Dark tapered skirts in soft drape-friendly fabrics Straight legged, flat front trousers Tonal outfits with the deeper shade on the

Your Height, Weight and Bone Structure

Slimmer by DesignVertical design lines, such as centre front buttons, princessseaming, single breasted jackets, stripes and an ironed crease inthe front of your pants will visually slim the body by dividing itinto vertical sections. The closer the vertical lines, the slimmeryou will appear.

Wear longer line tops to disguise stomach size. A top finishingabove the problem area will only draw the eye to the problemarea. If there is a line of skin showing, it will attract attention andagain focus our mind on the problem area.

Add a focal point (accessory or eye-catching detail) to drawattention away from any figure challenges.

Wear hats that have their brim facing upward to create theillusion of more height.

Do not wear textured or shiny garments wherever you are largest. For example, if you are larger below the waist, a shiny or very textured pair of pants will make you appeareven larger, but a shiny or textured jacket may well balance with your body and make you appear slimmerand more in proportion.

Do not emphasise a problem by placing a similar shape over or near it e.g., a scooped neckline over a largebust, a round yoke over a large stomach or a square neckline under a square jaw.

Opt for square cut pockets or in seam pockets in pants or jet pockets in jackets as anything with a roundededge will make you look bigger. A square cut pocket is more angular and gives a slimmer, sleeker look.

A single breasted jacket left open will make you appear slimmer than if you wore the jacket closed, creatinga line break or solid colour block on the upper body. By wearing it open you are allowing movement andanother layer to show through which will be more slimming than a closed jacket.

Choose a jacket that doesnt button exactly on the waist a little above or below. With some clothing say asafari jacket you can unwittingly add horizontal lines to your outfit with additional details such as pocketsand belts. If you compare a safari jacket and a 2 button single breasted pocketless jacket, the simple blazerwould give you a much slimmer appearance because it contains no details that add bulk and distract theeye from its straight up and down path.

Remember these tips to create a slimmer look:

A jacket and trousers with vertical stripes will add length.Ensure vertical stripes are close together.

Avoid creating a line break or focal point at your waist bytucking in your shirt or top which may accentuate midriff orstomach bulges.

A skirt with a small side slit is the best shape for a fuller leg. Lengthen you arm and reveal your slim wrists by pushing up

your sleeves. People will imagine the rest of your arm underthe jacket sleeve is as slim as your wrist.

A line skirts are slimming and work even better if they are cuton the bias.

Choose a pair of tailored trousers that are cut a little too longfor you and add heels. Wear flat fronted, boot cut trouserswith a side zip. Avoid pleated fronts and flaps on pockets.

Always wear trouser socks in the same colour as yourtrousers.

To create a slimmer silhouette when wearing a bulky garment above or below your waist, ensure thegarment at the opposite end is tapered, e.g. an 'A-line' skirt with figure skimming twin set or a bulkysweater with tapered pants and non-bulky shoes/boots. Mixing tapered with wide

Slimmer by ProportionWear clothes that balance your horizontal and vertical proportions. For example, a woman who has a longbody and short legs can theoretically wear short jackets, however, if she also has a large bust line herjackets will have to be at least hip length to de-emphasise her bust.

The more foot you show the slimmer your leg will appear. Strappy sandals and classic court styles are moreslimming than ankle boots or high vamp shoes. Wear hosiery that blends in colour with you r hemlineand/or shoes to visually slim and lengthen your legs.

Fine floaty layers create movement around the body. Fluid movement is flattering to the figure. Keep youroutline sleek and unfussy.

Dresses cut on the bias of the cloth, wool, silk, or jersey slim you if you can buy a size that skims rather thanclings.

Wearing fabric weight that is in line with your overall bone structure and weight ie fine, medium or largeare very helpful. Medium weight fabric and weave is the most versatile. Heavy fab ric, very textured andlarge weaves can add volume.

Avoid kaftans or baggy dresses with large prints. Opt formedium non obvious prints which are consistent with yourbone structure and with a smart print the eye is not forced tostop at an obvious point in the print ie large flower. A nonobvious print allows the eye to run smoothly up the garment, adding height.

Remember that patterns with a dark background aremore slimming than those with a pale or neutral base.

For a general rule of thumb: the larger the pattern oraccessories you wear, the larger you'll appear to be. Mediumis the safest size if you're in doubt as it suits everybody.

Matt fabric absorb light and therefore can make you appearslimmer than fabrics, which have a sheen or are shiny, as thisfabric advances and may make the area appear larger.Shoulder pads will help to camouflage large hips andminimise the size of large busts by eliminating any drag from shoulder to bust point.

The most slimming and versatile length for jackets, over-blouses, and tops is knuckle length. This length isnot only slimming but versatile; it works with both skirts and pants, high and low heeled shoes and suitsthat are all one colour or a different coloured jacket and skirt.

Don't wear texture. It adds bulk and perceived weight gain. Think weave and surface interest in lieu ofprint. Surface interest does not mean texture.

The eye always goes to the print. Generally avoid prints or keep them to the top half of the body. Certainlydon't wear prints on the bottom of your body when you have a solid colour on the top!!

However, widely placed horizontal stripes, for example can give the illusion of a bigger bust and when wornwith a dark bottom can help balance a triangle or pear shaped figure.

Focal pointsAvoid light, bright or shiny focal points drawing attention to your problem areas. Wear darker colours overproblem areas to diminish the apparent size of that area. However, avoid darker colours like black overyour entire body as this can make you look heavier if the colours are not layered.

Problem focal points can be created by drawing attention to a problem area, for example gathered orhandkerchief sleeves at your wrists resting at your hips may draw attention down the body to wide or fullhips making them appear even larger with additional fabric and volume in that area.

If your trousers are tight, check your crotch area, too tight can draw unwanted attention and create anundignified distraction.

If people comment that you look tiredand drawn, you maybe wearing the wrongcolour outfit or make up which can makeyou look tired, sick or dull. Wearingflattering shades will enhance all yourattributes. If you often feel you lookdrained in whatever you wear try holdingup different coloured garments up to yourface when you next go shopping and beopen minded about what they reveal.Otherwise, engage a professional colourand image consultant to assist determineyour best colour range for your complexion, eye and hair colour.

    Your Skin Tone and Colour

People who understand and wear colour appear more interesting, more stylish, more confident and morein control. While you need confidence to wear colour, wearing the right colour will give you thatconfidence.

If you lift your energy, appear more vibrant and vital, you will be. Dont just feel energetic. Lift your energywith colour therapy. Complementary colours such as yellow and indigo, blue and orange when worntogether will lift your spirit and esteem while soothing your mind.

Choosing a colour that enhances your skin tone and makes you look good, can also give you a greatpsychological boost.

The most important aspect of colour is to wear your best colours to give you a more flattering, youthful andvital appearance.

Working out what colours suit you can be difficult. However, take a number of garments in various shadesof one colour and try them on. Look for their impact on your complexion. Do your eyes look brighter? Doesyour skin look more balanced and smooth? Are there less shades under your eyes? Are the whites of youreyes clearer? When wearing your best colours it lifts your complexion, brightens your eyes andcomplements your hair. The wrong colours will have you reaching for your make up.

If you are wearing your best colours, they will make you look more alive and you will begin to see thedifference. People will start to comment on how well you look and notice the colour of your eyes for thefirst time. Your wardrobe will become increasingly well co-ordinated.

If youre struggling to decide what are your best colours, whether warm, cool and bright, or softer pastelssuit you better, make an appointment to have your colours determined by a Professional Image and Colour

consultant. Celebrities, media presenters and executives are increasingly educating themselves on the bestcolours which flatter their complexion, hair and eyes.

Wear all one colour or tones of one colour from head to toe. Often fuller figured women wear blacktrousers. The most slimming way to wear black or any other colour is to wear all black or that colour fromhead to toe.

Wear garments in colours that are close in colour intensity e.g. stone and soft white. Keep the darker colour to the bottom garment to slim your hips and make you appear taller. Flow colour from top to bottom e.g. black pants, black top and taupe jacket or taupe pants, taupe

    jacket and black top.

The more solid a piece of clothing the more solid you can appear. For example heavy blacks and navys notbroken and softened with some colour can emphasise apparent weight.

Wearing layers of fabrics in the same or similar colours and tones can keep movement over the body andgive the illusion of a shapely, slimmer body. And while you can achieve the effect with any colour, darkershades, which absorb the light, are the most slimming. You can also add vibrancy without breaking thevertical design line by playing with different textures or by dressing in different tones of the same colour.

    Colour Illusion and Co-ordination

Co-ordinationMost women are not aware of all the possible mix and match combinations they already own. Often, weget in such a rut that we forget that there's more than one way of doing things. Use these guidelines tobalance and co-ordinate your garments successfully.

Light colours appear to enlarge size and space.Dark colours appear to diminish size and space.Yellow based colours appear warm.Blue based colours appear dense and heavy.Dark colours appear dense and heavy.Light colours appear less compact and lighter.Dark colours strongly define silhouette when silhouetted by a light colour and are likewise less definedwhen silhouetted by darker backgrounds.Light colours have less power to define a silhouette unless silhouetted by a dark colour.Light colours appear larger and more dominant when silhouetted by a dark background.Dark colours placed over an area of the body considered large will make the area appear smaller.Light or bright colours placed over an area of the body considered small will make the area appear larger.Dark colours placed below the waist and teamed with a light or bright colour on top will attract attentionupward and make the wearer appear taller and slimmer.Dark colours placed above the waist and teamed with a light or bright item below the waist will attractattention downward and make the wearer appear shorter and heavier.Medium colours neither enlarge or diminish the apparent size of an area.

    Your Arms

You can slim and elongate your arms and torso with the correctsleeve length and styles selection.

Try these suggestions Tops with sleeves that

taper to the wrist Long sleeve tops or

those that end justabove the elbow

Raglan, dolman andkimono sleeves (or anytops with extra room inthe armhole)

Tops with quietverticals, like seams orlong thin lapels

Avoid Tight tops and sleeves Tops made of stiff fabrics or

heavy fabrics or heavycolours Sleeveless or very short

sleeve tops Sleeve with wrist detail that

    may add volume to yourhipline

    Your Legs

Hosiery Blend the colour of your hem, hosiery and shoes for a longer, slimmer leg. Black opaque tights are the

most flattering. Never wear tights under trousers. They act as a magnet making the fabric cling. Thighs look twice the

size. Toe-less hosiery maybe worn with open toe shoes. Ensure the colour of the hosiery is very similar to

your natural skin colour to give a long leg look. Get a light to medium tan to look slim and vital. White pasty skin advances and adds apparent weight. Dark, muted stockings are always more flattering to the legs, while light colours can add pounds. If your outfit is a dark muted colour already, dont match the colour exactly. Choose hosiery that is

slightly darker than your outfit. It will create a line break but it will be a flattering one. Avoid patterned stockings as these make you look shorter and heavier. Its particularly important if you are heavy or short to follow a basic rule about stocking colour. It

should match the colour of the hem of your trouser or skirt, continuing the downward flow, or itshould match the colour of your shoe, moving upward.

The exception is an outfit in a very bright colour, such as purple or red; with bright colours choosetaupe or flesh colour slightly darker than you own skin.

ShoesThe higher the heel, the more foot you show and the pointier the toe of the shoe, the longer and slimmeryour legs will appear. Foot revealing strappy sandals and open heels and toes, which allow the foot to spillover, are unattractive if you are heavy.

However, comfy espadrilles or wedges heels will balance out bigger legs and your ankles appear thinnerand are as slimming as stilettos on a more toned leg. Also avoid shoes that are very delicate. If you areshort, teetering on very slim high heels doesnt make you look comfortably taller, just awkward andunbalanced.

If youve got fat legs, wear high boots with below knee length skirts and dresses. Try to avoid having a gapbetween the top of your boot and your hem. Boots can save you from a life time in trousers. Calf lengthboots will only emphasis large calves. Finding a boot that totally encases the lower leg is the best way todistract attention from large calves. Thin legs look great in heel free boots, plumper legs dont.

Buy shoes a half size larger. If you do this and then slip in a shoe pad you will find it not only morecomfortable but slimming. Nothing is less slimming than a large foot squeezed into too tight a shoe.

Wear shoes with an open vamp rather than those with ankle strap. A low cut shoe draws the eyedown and away from the ankle

Wear shoes with a thin sole. Chunky soles give the appearance of thick ankles and calves. Howeverwearing only slightly heavier shoes will make ankles appear thinner. A more substantial shoe looksin proportion to a more substantial ankle.

Wear shoes with a medium to high heel. Wear non-chunky soles. Larger busted women require a thicker heel to balance their body shape. Shoes with bows and ornaments should also be avoided.

    About the Author

Rachel Quilty, Senior Professional Image Consultant and GeneralManager of Jump the Q, a Professional Image Consulting andExecutive Finishing School regularly speaks at seminars, conferencesand workshops on professional image, personal branding anddeveloping your signature style.

Rachel notes, It is essential to understand the important role thatimage management plays in your personal success. Statistics show thatpeople who are bright, verbal and attractive make more money and aremore successful than those who arent. This startling fact is as muchabout image and manner as it is about beauty.

Your leading attribute is your personal image. What people see is whatthey expect to get. The best personal brand is determined more bywhat your audience or clients expect to see and what positions you

favourably in their mind then just looking professional. What is your signature style and what will brandyou as professional, individual and credible? Importantly, style is less about size than it is an attitude.

Becoming your own unique brand is essential! As Judy Garland said, Always be a first rate version ofyourself instead of a second rate version of someone else.

Rachel is also the author of a number of Manuals and eBooks and regularly contributes to various businesspublications, Blogs and Fashion Forums. Rachel has a keen interest in Etiquette, fashion for fuller figuresand educating women on the importance of colour and style when selecting clothes to wear.

Recognising the confusion surrounding professional business attire particularly with a growing trend inhome based businesses, Rachel Quilty was invited to contribute to Robyn Hendersons latest book How torun a successful business from home and stay sane! released in October 2007. Rachel was also invited tocontribute to Debbie Mayo-Smiths latest book , 101 Quick Tips - Create a Great Customer Experience.
