Florence
“Believe it or not, I’m
old enough to be one
of the original’s Wool-
worth’s girls. I outlasted
them all! I’m even older
than my church. It just
turned 100, and I will be
104 in December.”
Florence worked hard
to raise her two children
by herself after her
husband died 46 years
ago. She was doing
well until she was hit
by a van in 1994 and
broke both her legs. “We thought we were going to lose her,” said Barbara
Ann, her daughter. “The doctors said she could not be on her own, but I
live 100 miles away. We are so grateful for Meals on Wheels Chicago, as
mom can’t cook for herself anymore.”
Meals on Wheels Chicago provides both meals and a wellness check.
Florence loves her visits from Calvin. He not only brings Mom her meals,
but a smile and a hug. When Florence turned 101, Calvin had his congregation
sign an enormous birthday card for her!
So, what’s the secret to a long life? Florence shrugs, “I try not to worry
and I now eat well. My favorite is the mostaccioli. I do drink Dr. Pepper;
he’s the doctor who’s done the most for me!”
