FROM THE RECTOR

The Rev. Aaron M. G. ZimmermanRector

In our liturgy, the person who is leading the service of Holy

Eucharist is called the Celebrant. That’s because we’re doing what Kool & The Gang (1980) said to do: Celebrate! Every Sunday, we are cel-ebrating the ridiculously good news that in Jesus Christ, God is done with keeping score and all—every last saint, sinner, slug, sloth, and self-cen-tered human—are invited to the party. Or, as the liturgy puts it, “when we had fallen into sin and death,” God in his mercy sent his Son Jesus Christ “to live and die as one of us, to recon-cile us” to God.

So we Episcopalians are good at cel-ebrating. Which is good, because we have a lot to celebrate these days at St. Alban’s. For example:

Later in March, we’ll welcome Dwight Schrute and Pam Beasley to help us think about life and God in our annu-al Lenten Dinner Series, with the 2017 theme “The Gospel According to The Office” (page 11).

Here’s another thing to celebrate: you have two opportunities to take a field trip to hear the good news of God’s grace. Mockingbird Ministries is host-ing two fantastic conferences this spring:

Mockingbird Tyler: “The Soul of the Gospel.” February 24-25, 2017, in Tyler, TX. Featuring the brilliant Paul Zahl & funny-yet-deep Sarah Condon. Info and tickets: mbirdtyler.com

Mockingbird NYC: “Ten Years of Grace.” April 27-29. Hosted at histor-ic St. George’s Church in Manhattan, this conference celebrating 10 years of Mockingbird will feature amaz-ing food, Episcodisco hosted by an Episcopal-priest-turned DJ, and Ben Maddison! Also, I am honored to be joining the speakers lineup, which includes Fleming Rutledge (Episcopal priest and author, most recently of The Crucifixion), Sarah Condon (Priest and hilarious author of Churchy), Oliver Burkeman (author of The Antidote: Happiness for People Who Can’t Stand Positive Thinking and columnist for The Guardian), Duo Dickinson (Architect and host of WPKN’s “Home Page”), Nicole Cliffe (co-founder and editor-in-chief of The Toast and contributor to Slate), and Mockingbird founder and execu-tive director, David Zahl.

Truly, lots to celebrate. So find your Kool & The Gang, turn it up, and open your heart.

And remember, God’s not keeping score. And dancing is allowed.

Love,

• At the end of February, we’ll cele-brate as we wrap up the active phase of our capital campaign. We’ll do this at a lunch after the 10:00 AM service on February 26. Come hungry and prepared to have a good time!

• Our church continues to grow. As I write this, on the last three Sundays we have welcomed over 200 people at St. Alban’s. We plant and water, but as St. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 3:7, God gives the growth. This growth has given us reason to shift things around a little bit. Since the church is full at 10:00 AM, we are looking at moving to three Sunday services: 7:30, 9:00, and 11:15 AM (with Sunday School and coffee hour at 10:15 AM). Read more on page 9.

• Our most recent newcomers/confir-mation class, “St. Alban’s 101,” had 33 people, most from non-Episcopal backgrounds.

• Our finances are strong, thanks to your faithful stewardship of what God has entrusted you with. In 2017, we will be able to fund our existing min-istries and, we hope, help resource them for growth.

• Our January/February Theology on Tap sessions (Theme: “She Blinded Me With Science”) were an absolute blast, as 40 to 45 people packed into Barnett’s Pub, to listen to our speak-ers on science on religion (Thanks Becky, Eric, Richard, and Pat).

• After Ben Maddison said farewell, our college and young families ministry have transitioned beautifully under the leadership of Kelli, Justin, Cate, and Stephanie. And they’re co-host-ing our 1980s-themed Valentine’s Dance, “The Power of Love” on February 17. Be there or be square!

• We have a faithful and gifted vestry leading us through an exciting time.

You’ll find more to celebrate (or con-template) in this Epistle. At the end of February, we’ll move from Epiphany to Lent, with Ash Wednesday on March 1.

The Legend, as I know it, goes:

During the Reformation—long before the knowledge of ages lived on our fingertip—there was only one place to go to discuss God, life, and an ever changing world:

The Coffee House!

As the catholic church splintered into a thousand denominations, and the latest theological theory was on everyone's tongue, coffee houses became mini-seminaries, where en-lightening (and often "heretical") con-versation was bought for a penny. The persistent patrons even had a nick-name, "Penny Theologians."

Little did "Friends" know it was re-es-tablishing a centuries old theological tradition. What "Friends" did recog-nize was the need for young men and women to find a place where they could bring their deepest thoughts and questions to the light of discus-sion and consideration. A place with-out judgment, where a cup of coffee and a cohort of friends waited.

YA@SA is continuing that tradi-tion with "Coffee Talk" at Common Grounds on 1st and 3rd Tuesdays from 6-8 pm and "Breakfast Club" the first Sunday of every month after the 10:00am service.

YA@SA YOUNG ADULTS AT ST. ALBAN'S

KELLI:

College students and young adults, my name is Kelli Barron. My job is simple:

#1 Listen: because it's your turn to talk. #2 Be a resource: because why pay for a seminary degree when someone who has one is willing to fill you in for free. #3 Be there, just in case: because this is your virgin flight into independence and a little backup is nice.

I am a teacher, writer, theologian, former pastor, wife, sister, daughter. I've always lived in Texas, but I've ex-perienced four denominations in my Christian walk. I would prefer to say, "I believe in the teachings of Christ," than to call myself Christian because there is just too much baggage with that word. But, what really matters is this: whatever I say when we meet is just my two cents, and you can leave that change on the table as you walk away, as long as the grace of Christ pervades our conversation when to-gether and precedes us out the door.

As in all things Episcopalian, YA@SA is open to all walks of life and all ways of thought, so I hope to see you there!

JUSTIN:

My name is Justin Forgey. I'm married to Jenny (Wife, Mother, Law Student Extraordinaire) and we have two kids, Gunnar (8) and Lily (7). Though new to St. Alban's, I have been a member of the Episcopal Church for the last 23 years. I serve as the current part time assistant youth ministry volunteer alongside Grace, and I will help lead St. Alban's Young Adult Ministry with Kelli.

MYLES COVERDALE AND THE PSALMSEugene Lavery, Director of Music

One of the f irst fruits of England’s ambivalent refor-mation and the formation of

the Anglican Church was the work of ecclesiastical reformer and preach-er Myles Coverdale (1448-1569). The Anglicanism of Henry VIII was essen-tially Catholicism without the Pope; but he did permit the translation of scripture into English and in 1535 Coverdale printed the first full English bible.

Strictly speaking, Coverdale was more of an adaptor than a transla-tor as he knew neither Greek nor Hebrew, and instead relied upon in-terpreting Latin. CS Lewis famously remarked that even Coverdale’s “mis-takes were inspired” and compared

Myles Coverdale (1448-1569)

to the noteworthy sixteenth century scholar-translators, he was “a rowing boat among battleships,” whose gift was selecting the vocabulary used in the bible.

One of the driving forces of Coverdale’s choice of words was his intended audience. He imagined the English people as one religious com-munity and his bible was intended to convert the nation to Protestantism by giving them direct access to God’s word. Coverdale intended his texts to be memorable and poetic and his translations of the Psalms are, for many Anglicans and Episcopalians, more familiar and beloved than any other translation of the Scriptures.

It is with these things in mind that the Saint Alban’s choir, and season-ally the congregation, will now sing Psalms using the Coverdale trans-lation. The poetic text lends itself more fittingly to music and allows the parish to connect with an im-portant element of our Anglican heritage. It should also be noted that up until 1979 the Book of Common Prayer (BCP) used the Coverdale Psalter and even today many church-es within the worldwide Anglican Communion still use this translation.

Below I offer a comparison of the first three verses of Psalm 42 between the 1979 BCP and Coverdale:

1979 Book of Common Prayer1. As the deer longs for the water-brooks, *so longs my soul for you, O God.

2. My soul is athirst for God, athirst for the living God;*when shall I come to appear before the presence of God?

3. My tears have been my food day and night,*while all day long they say to me,“Where now is your God?”

Myles Coverdale1. Like as the hart desireth the water-brooks,* so longeth my soul after thee, O God.

2. My soul is athirst for God, yea, even for the living God:* when shall I come to appear before the presence of God?

3. My tears have been my meat day and night,* while they daily say unto me, Where is now thy God?

Shrove Tuesday Cajun (and Pancake) Supper Tuesday, Feb 28, 6:00 PM, Parish Hall

You may call it Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras or Shrove Tuesday. Either way, peo-ple have long been gathering on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday to feast before we enter the penitential season of Lent. This year, Patti Tamberella (and her husband Mike, a New Orleans native) will prepare a true Cajun meal, along with the traditional pancake supper. Join us (and bring your friends and family) and laissez les bon temps rouler!

Ash WednesdayMarch 1, 2017, 12:00 Noon - Holy Eucharist with Imposition of Ashes.

7:00 PM - Choral Holy Eucharist with Imposition of Ashes (nursery available)

Lent is the 50-day season before Easter. Lent is a reflective season in which we do some “soul work” of considering our sin, our mortality, and God’s mer-cy. Many Christians also undertake a special spiritual discipline during this time (e.g., fasting, prayer, or service). We enter this season on Ash Wednes-day. We will offer two services on March 1. Please join us as we endeavor to keep a holy Lent.

Liturgy in Lent: During Lent, all ser-vices will use Rite I, a powerful and beautiful liturgy that is appropriate

for this season of preparation for Eas-ter. Look for “Liturgical Notes” in the

bulletin that explain some of these liturgical changes.

Survey Results

On Sunday Service

Schedule

Our congregation was recently asked to respond to a survey regarding shifting from two to three services on Sundays. The proposed Sunday service schedule is as follows:

7:30 AM Service Holy Communion (Rite 1), no music9:00 AM ServiceHoly Communion (Rite 2), traditional music, nursery available, children's chapel10:15 AM Sunday SchoolSunday School for all ages (with coffee hour)11:15 AM ServiceHoly Communion (Rite 2), traditional music, nursery available, children's chapel The survey was distributed via email on February 1, and then in our weekly email on February 3. Hard copies of the survey were available at Sunday services on February 5. We received 90 responses (as of February 7, 2017; all have been online with no paper surveys returned). This represents about 46% of our Average Sunday At-tendance. About 9% of the responses were from people ages 18-29, 33% from ages 30-49, 17.8% from ages 50-59, and 39% from ages 60 and above. The survey indicated that time and convenience were the most important factors in choosing a service, with music the second most important. Liturgy and com-munity (who you see at church) ranked much lower in importance. Interestingly, 51 respondents (56.7%) never attend Sunday School. About 24% of respondents attend once or twice a month. Only 10% of respondents attend Sunday School every Sunday. When asked if they would be more likely to attend Sunday School at the proposed time of 10:15 AM, 44% of respondents said yes. When asked their likely preference to the new schedule, respondents answered as follows:

With almost half of our active congregation answering the survey, with many indicating excitement and support (and with only 3.5% indicating a view that a change was not necessary), the Worship Advisory Task Force unanimously recommended to the rector and vestry that we adopt this new schedule in 2017. It was further recommended that we do so on a trial basis for 12 months with regular evaluation and, if needed, modification.

The Worship Advisory Task Force will work with the rector and vestry to deter-mine the launch date of the new schedule. Thanks for your input and stay tuned!
