later this month we’ll be gathering with family and friends to celebrate the thanksgiving holiday. our celebrations offer time to reflect on the many ways each of us are blessed, providing an opportunity to remind ourselves of how enriched our lives are, be-ginning with a commitment to a healthy lifestyle.

Thank you for being dedicated members of our fit-ness family, as we are grateful to have the opportu-nity to daily interact with you, your family and friends, and make a difference in your lives.

thank you for impacting the lives of others and encouraging someone else to join your journey to good health, whether through a referral or even tak-ing the time to share workout advice.

thank you for helping keep our facility clean, as your support demonstrates the pride you have in your fitness centre and respect for other members.

thank you for your patronage, commitment, and feedback that allows us to meet and hopefully ex-ceed your service and fitness expectations this past year. looking ahead to 2014 we know our continued success depends on this relationship, your continued dedication to your fitness goals, and our ability to provide an environment for success.

Healthy holiday eating tips

Healthy holiday eating tips

when the holiday season rolls around again, some people start to feel a sort of anxiety about the themed parties, foods that will be plentiful during this time and the effect on personal weight loss and health goals. if you plan ahead you are sure to make it through the holidays without that extra inch or two around your waistline.

Here are some tips to help:

• make realistic goals. the holiday season is not the time to place added stress on yourself by attempting to lose weight. try to maintain your weight during this time of year. smart phone apps like “lose it” will help you track your nutrient and calorie intake.

• use smaller plates if available when at a buffet-style party. this will encourage you to eat smaller por-tions.

• try eating a healthy snack before going to a party to ease your hunger. the small plate that you are using will provide you with just the right amount of food without you having to go back for seconds.

• conversation is calorie-free, but move away from the buffet so you won’t be tempted to eat while you talk. if someone is encouraging you to eat more during your conversation and if you are not hungry, feel ok saying “no”.

• scope out the buffet before you go up to make your selections. this will help you plan on what things you want to try and fill your small plate appropriately.

• balance what you eat at parties with what you eat during the day. this is where the smart phone apps will come in handy to help you plan out eating a larger amount of calories during the party.

• remember that beverages contain calories as well. alcoholic beverages, home-made punches, and chocolaty beverages tend to have sneaky calories that you may not bargain for. consume these in moderation!

• watch your portion sizes and take small “tastes” of high calorie dishes. this is where the small plate will come into play by forcing you to take smaller portions.

christi’s holiday sweet potatoes

4. drizzle maple syrup evenly over the potatoes.

5. break the butter into 1 tsp pieces and distribute evenly over the potatoes.

6. place in oven and bake for 45-55 minutes or until sweet potatoes are “fall apart soft” when a fork is inserted.

a little faith after a lot of fun

Celebration Fitness Centre offers a wide variety of fitness programs for members -

from group fitness classes to personal training. Choosing the one that fits your individual

goals and personality can take some time to figure out. But, once you find what works

for you, stick to it! that is exactly what fitness centre member faith boles did.

Jumping, dancing, sweating and having the time of her life while becoming 70 pounds lighter, fitness centre member,

faith boles tells us her story

four years ago, she decided to take control of her life and vowed to live a healthy lifestyle. faith started her workout journey trying to figure out what was best for her.

“i found myself coming to the gym and walking around trying to figure out how each machine worked rather than actually stepping on a treadmill,” said faith. “not ex-actly the ideal workout regiment.”

being a musical theatre major and a disney performer, she decided to do some research on the dance-like les millstm classes, which were the most appealing to her. The first group fitness class she attended was body-Jam with instructor stacy dee slocum and instructor terrance maleko. “within 10 minutes, i was jumping, sing-ing, dancing, sweating and having the time of my life! i felt like i was onstage performing as a back-up dancer for beyonce during bodyJam.”

her motivation came mostly from looking at old pictures of herself as she walked into the gym. a picture is really worth a thousand words. she also has mantras she says to herself to stay motivated: “sweat is your fat crying!” and “Run like Channing Tatum is at the finish line!”

the staff at the fitness centre always holds me account-able for my workouts, said faith. as soon as i walk in they always ask if i’m coming to class. when i leave someone almost always shouts “we’ll see you tomorrow.” that kind of attention helps to motivate me to come back the next day.“this might be a shock to everyone who reads this, but i’m not someone who actually likes working out. to be

honest, i hate it,” says faith, “however, the lord has bless-ed me with a womanly figure and a slow metabolism.”

faith discovered that setting mini-goals for herself helped tremendously. this keeps me from getting overwhelmed by numbers on a scale, she explained. this past July, she set a goal to lose 10 pounds before her best friend’s wedding. she met that goal and then some. her new goal is to finally be the weight on her driver’s license. She is now 20 pounds away and once she reaches that goal she will be 70 pounds lighter! “it’s not about the journey ahead, it’s about how far you have come,” says faith.

she suggests that if you are hesitant to try any group fitness classes, start by reading the descriptions of the classes and find one that fits your personality. There are classes for everyone! try them out a few time before you make a final decision. “Release your confident alter ego and just have fun,” she says.

Setting mini-goals for herself helped tremendously.

The Prowler (pictured above)

one of the most versatile pieces of equipment ever invented, the prowler is basically a weight sled original-ly designed for football. however, it works about every muscle in the body as a fully functional unit. because it in-corporates so many muscles and the movement pattern is simple; it can be very efficient at creating metabolic fat burning circuits and also for rehab purposes.

weight can be added or subtracted according to individ-ual training needs. metabolic circuits can involve various forms of push/pull combinations that involve both lower and upper body. circuits can begin with low frequency and increase in numbers as fitness levels adapt. Rehab ex-ercises allow for the whole body to interact while keeping stress levels low on injured joints and allows for weight to be increased as the area becomes stronger.

TRX Suspension Trainer (pictured at left)

trX suspension trainer is a performance training tool that leverages gravity and the user’s body weight to enable hundreds of exercises for every fitness goal. Individuals get a fast, effective total body workout. It benefits people of ALL fitness levels (pro athletes to seniors) developing strength, balance, flexibility and core stability simultaneously. you’re in control of how much you want to challenge yourself on each exercise because you can simply adjust your body position to add or decrease resistance. whether you’re just beginning your journey into fitness or pushing towards your summit, TRX Suspension Training gives you a scalable, sustainable, fun effective approach to help you achieve your personal best.

Free Weights

if you’re a beginner but have invested in some personal training sessions, or if you’re past the beginner stage, free weights may be a better option. this includes the use of dumbbells, barbells and all movements where you are not locked into a specific movement pattern (by cable or belt pulley). The biggest proponent of using free weights is the increased muscle activation. the use of free weights will require many other synergistic muscle groups in order to accomplish the movement. the activation of these muscle groups, often your stabilizer muscles, will result in increased balance, coordination and power both in your strength routine but in everyday life as well.

at the fitness centre & day spa we offer dumbbells from 1 – 120lbs in weight. olympic and power lifting bars, with iron plate and bumper plates to use. we also offer many other functional training options and kettelbells increasing up to 70lbs.

if you have any questions about any of this equipment or any other equipment you may be interested in using please feel free to stop by our training desk and speak with one of our floor trainers today.

fitness tip

Incorporating free weights can increase balance,

coordination and power both in your strength routine but in

everyday life as well.

As the holiday season approaches and the party invites start flood-ing in, it’s time to get your skin looking its best! follow these tips for glowing, party-ready skin:

• 3-4 weeks prior: plan for a more intense facial treatment to reach the deeper layers of your skin. a topical fall option that includes Yam and Pumpkin Enzyme Peel to minimize fine lines and brighten skin is the perfect choice.

• 2 days prior: plan for a scrub and a body treatment. choose treatment to refine and hydrate. Achieve radiance and bare your shoulders with confidence.

away holiday stressby Randy Keller

Celebration Day Spa Lead Massage Therapist

it is hard to believe that the holiday season is almost upon us. for most of us, the holidays are like one song in particular states…”it’s the most wonderful time of the year!”

many things make the holiday season great; visiting with loved ones, attending holiday parties with friends and family, the food, the cooler weather, exchanging gifts, and did i mention the food.

there is however, the other side of the coin, so to speak. the holidays can also create situations that bring added stress into our lives, such as running around town trying to find that perfect gift, trying to make sure you divide your time appropriately when visiting with family and friends, the stresses of traveling, and dealing with large crowds (everything seems to be more crowded during the holidays!).

it is at these moments that it is important to take a step back, take a deep breath, and remember to do the things necessary to ease the tension and stress before it affects your holiday joy. what better way to do this than to make an appointment with us at the spa. taking time out to pamper yourself for a few hours can have a significant impact on reducing your holiday stress, and as a result you will be able to truly enjoy those special holiday moments with those you care about.

wishing you a happy, safe, and stress-free holiday season!

auricular therapy is the stimulation of ear points with pressure or electricity used to manage stress and anxiety, alleviate pain, promote sleep, and im-prove overall health. herbal, gold, silver or stainless steel seeds are attached to the skin of the ear with plaster and remain on the skin for 5 days. if herbal seeds are used, pressure is applied to points several times a day to stimulate acupressure points. a prac-titioner will often use auricular therapy on children or as a form of treatment to take home for contin-ued care.

cupping is a method of treatment used to promote local congestion. the glass cup is attached to the skin surface through negative pressure created when heat is added to and removed from the cup. cups are placed on the back, shoulders, arms and legs and maintained in an area for 10 minutes. sometimes the cups leave a marking on the skin that will disappear in a few days. this is an effective treatment for pain

in the low back, shoulders, leg and chest congestion.electro-acupuncture (eap) is the application of pul-sating current to specific acupuncture points using an electrical stimulation device such as a point loca-tor or electrical stimulation machine. eap reduces inflammation, increases blood circulation, promotes muscle relaxation and affects endorphin release. tui-na is form of medical massage applied to soft tissue to reduce pain, promote blood circulation and increase range of motion. herbal liniments are often applied following tui-na.

in combination, non-needle and needle techniques provide an effective holistic approach to health and well-being.
