Celebrating unsung and differently abled heroes: Aurolympics 2016-17 Sports day The 21st and 26th January 2017 were special days for AMIS. It was time for Aurolympics 2016-17 – our annual sports meet! Everyone was excited. This year, our sports meet happened in two phases. The first part took place on 21st January and was named ‘Race Day’. It was a day when the children participated in different kinds of races, many of which are part of the Powers Within games that we play at school. Prima- ry classes participated in these races. The second part of our sports meet took place on 26th January, India’s Republic Day. To start with the events of Race Day, many fascinating races happened on this day, with names that were just as fascinating. For example, we had a race called Crawlers - a relay race where children had to crawl under chairs. Yet another crawly race was the ‘Caterpillar Race’. Here, the children acted like caterpillars and crawled on their hands. The students of Class 1 amazed their cheering parents with their ability to balance saucers, to hurdle jump and to drop cones quickly by throwing balls at them. The children of Class 2 participated in the Above and BelowRace, in which they had to jump through hula- hoops and go under a bar to reach the finishing line first. Among the older children, the Allamanda group participated in the Sack Race; the boys of the Allamanda, Antigonon and Raintree groups played Young Commandoes and the girls of the Allamanda, Antigonon and Raintree groups played Run-Hop-Skip. After many exciting races, the day’s events ended and left us waiting for the Sports Day. As our Sports Day fell on India’s Republic Day, we celebrated both days together in the spirit of sportsmanship. Both the primary and the pre-primary sections were part of this day’s events. The primary Sports Day took place in the morning, while the pre-primary section had their programme in the afternoon. The morning’s events began with Silence, after which we had the flag hoisting ceremony. Rajnikant Sir, Secretary, Aurobindo Bhavan (Bangalore) and Captain Nair of AMIS hoisted the flag. The singing of the national anthem and the march-past followed this. The theme of this year’s Sports Day was celebrating unknown heroes of India’s freedom struggle and differently abled sportspersons of India. We had many spectacular displays on this day such as the Lezim display by the girls of classes 4, 5, 6 and 7 (Lezim is a drill from Maharashtra that has many coordinated movements requiring months of practice). We also had the gymnastics and wands display later during the day’s programme. An addition to this year’s Sports Day was a splendid hula-hoop display by the students of the Gulmohar group. Next, students of the Antigonon and Raintree groups put up a mind-blowing juggling display. The last display of the day was the Yoga dis- play, set to the song Vande Mataram. This was indeed a memorable day for each one of us. By Ishani Kadu, Antigonon Group (VI) 110 Gangadhar Chey Road, Ulsoor, Bangalore-560 042, 080-25580888/7760977548, www.auroschoolsulsoor.org

Celebrating unsung and differently abled heroes: Aurolympics 2016-17

Sports day

The 21st and 26th January 2017 were special days for AMIS. It was time for Aurolympics 2016-17 – our

annual sports meet! Everyone was excited. This year, our sports meet happened in two phases. The first

part took place on 21st January and was named ‘Race Day’. It was a day when the children participated in

different kinds of races, many of which are part of the Powers Within games that we play at school. Prima-

ry classes participated in these races. The second part of our sports meet took place on 26th January, India’s

Republic Day. To start with the events of Race Day, many fascinating races happened on this day, with

names that were just as fascinating. For example, we had a race called Crawlers - a relay race where

children had to crawl under chairs. Yet another crawly race was the ‘Caterpillar Race’. Here, the children

with their ability to balance saucers, to hurdle jump and to drop cones quickly by throwing balls at them.

hoops and go under a bar to reach the finishing line first. Among the older children, the Allamanda group

participated in the Sack Race; the boys of the Allamanda, Antigonon and Raintree groups played Young

Highlights from Pre-primary sports day

The pre-primary children displayed the glory of India’s Paralympic sportsper-

sons in their march-past, each class holding up a placard about a Paralympic

personality chosen by them. The tiny tots then ran the Fastest Boy and Fastest

Girl races, which was followed by many creatively designed races,

interspersed with displays. One of the most interesting displays was the Sun-

flower Drill by the students of UKG, symbolizing the positive energy received

from the sun. Among the other displays featured in the programme was the

gymnastics display which drew many cheers from parents.

Picnic Time for Grades I-IV Primary Picnic

On 23rd December 2016, the children of grades I to IV visited Janapada Loka and the Mysore Zoo for their

annual picnic. It was a day that the children had been looking forward to for many weeks. And the day’s

rich experiences were worth all the anticipation. After reaching Janapada Loka, the children ate their

breakfast and visited the folk museum there. There they had the opportunity to listen to a folk song pre-

sented by a local artist from Karnataka. Many children were listening to a folk song live for the first time,

and some spoke about it with great enthusiasm after their return.

Post-lunch, the children visited the Mysore Zoo, where they had a whale of a time watching various birds

and animals. Among the big attractions for the children were the wild cats and the magnificent elephants.

Watching the animals with their friends seemed to increase the joy of the experience for them. It was an

exciting day for all.

All about Fish Field Trip-Pentas group

The children of LKG Pentas group had been waiting eagerly for their trip to the Bangalore aquarium. The

day finally arrived on 2nd March 2017. The children were most excited to get to the aquarium and see

their favourite fish. During the bus ride, the kids discussed which fish they wanted to see the most. The

aquarium was an octagonal building with fish tanks on the ground and the first floors. It had many differ-

ent species of fish such as Catla, Eel, Gold Fish, Indian Tiger Barb, Angel Fish and many more. As the

children went from tank to tank, they noted the colours and the patterns on the fish. They had many

observations about the fish that they were seeing for the first time. They had fun time at the aquarium and

continued to speak about all that they had seen and learnt on their way back to school.

A Trip to See the ‘ Winged Jewels’ Field Trip-Spathiphyllum group

On 10th March, the children of Class 2B

(Spathiphyllum) went on a field trip to the Bannerghat-

ta Butterfly Park. After the kids hopped into the bus,

the fun began! On the way the kids saw big shops and

malls. They ate their snacks, did a lot of chatting and

some drawing. They reached the park in two hours. At

the park, there was a dome with so many plants and

various different varieties of butterflies. There was also

an information museum at the park. The children learnt

about different butterfly species. They saw the life cy-

cle of a butterfly and watched videos about butterflies.

The prettiest butterflies at the park were the Tamil

Lacewing and the Blue Tiger. After the visit to the

park, the children of 2B felt like they were flying with

the ‘winged jewels’.

My Dream

If I was a butterfly

I would fly far

Looking at the colourful world

Sipping the sweet nectar of flowers

Dreaming and flying

Dreaming and flying all along.

Learning about Modes of Transport Field Trip-Allamanda group

On 14th February, Class 5, Allamanda group along with Nandini didi, went to the Kempegowda

International Airport and the Vidhan Soudha metro station as a part of their geography field trip. They

were learning about modes of transport. They had a wonderful bus ride through Bengaluru. When they got

to the airport, Nandini didi gave them an assignment to find out how many flights arrived and departed in a

day, and if the airlines were domestic, international or both. She also asked them to find out how many

counters and airlines were there in all at the airport. After having their snack, the Allamanda group went to

the Vidhna Soudha metro station. The metro train was somewhat crowded. The children had to

stand for sometime, but as people got off, a few children got to sit. Soon it was time to return to school.

The Allamanda group had an enjoyable bus ride back to school from the metro station.

Muddy Times at AMIS Pottery time

It was pottery time again at AMIS from 30th January to 8th February,

2017. Class by class the whole school got a chance to make pots of

various shapes with decorative designs. It was an opportunity for all

the children of the school to see how pots are made and to get our

hands into the mud. It goes without saying, that the most enjoyable

part was getting our hands dirty in the mud and handling the wet clay

on the pottery wheel. We all made pots of different sizes. Then we

wrote down our names on the pots. It was such a delight to see the

mud being transformed into beautiful works of art. It will be even

more fun painting the pots in different colours! We had a wonderful

time making pots with our friends and classmates.

Playing Holi with the colours of nature Holi celebration

On 13th March 2017 we celebrated Holi in our school. The pre-primary children joined us in our assembly

area for the morning celebration. After the small children had settled down, we started our prayer. First,

there was a small skit on the significance of Holi by the Allamanda group. We learnt that we could cele-

brate Holi by giving sweets to one another, and by using flowers and leaves as a substitute for colours.

Some of these flowers and leaves have medicinal properties, such as Bilva and Neem leaves. In keeping

with this theme, we had a Flower Holi this year, giving harmful colours a complete miss. We started our

celebration by applying a tilak to Yamini didi’s forehead and after that all our class didis put tilaks on our

foreheads with natural kumkum and turmeric. Flower petals of various colours were arranged in many

plates and I threw flowers and leaves over my friends and celebrated Holi. Soon the whole school was rev-

elling in the fun, throwing flowers of different colours and leaves at each other. This is the best Holi I have

ever celebrated.

Dear Parents,

As we approach the end of this academic session, it is hard to accept that

almost a year has passed by. Vivid images of the year’s happening flood my

memory even as I write this letter. Let me take this opportunity to thank all

of you, dear parents, teachers, management and well-wishers whose synergy

has enabled us to step closer to our goals. At times when we hit the bottom

or soared high, your encouragement and faith helped us move forward.

Let me also take this opportunity dear parents, to assure you that considerable

thought is given to everyone of your feedback, helping us to look into and

review avenues or areas that we may have overlooked or missed out.

As you sail happily on your vacation, I request you dear parents to keep your

child engaged and connected with the world of learning by devoting a little

time to the task that our teachers have planned for the children.

Please make a note of the important dates given below:

Reopening of the school: 5th June 2017

Timings: 8.30 to 3.15 p.m.

Distribution of books: June 5th, 6th and 7th 2017.

Detailed mail will be sent to you by the class teachers.

Wishing you all a happy vacation.

Warmly,

Yamini E.S.
