Freedom and the Check SwingIn baseball, there is something called a ‘check swing.’ The batter starts to swing at the ball, but pulls back at the last minute, realizing he does not want to swing. The umpire has to rule whether

the bat has gone far enough to rule that the player has swung or not. If the answer is no, we say “the batter did not commit.”

Life is full of check swings. As long as we haven’t decided, we can still change our minds. And, as long as we can change our mind, we have not yet committed. And, as long as we haven’t committed, there is no risk of failure.

The belief in one God in our Tradition is connected to the benefits of commitment. When Elijah confronts the Jewish people worshipping Baal, he notices that they are hedging their bets. Why put faith in one God? What if that God can’t help us? Let’s offer sacrifices to many gods. One of those horses is sure to come in first. But, Elijah said to our people: Life doesn’t work that way. You have to choose.

I remember when I was in grade school, when we took standardized tests, there was a moment when the teacher said: “put your pencils down.” This was a moment of commitment. At that point, we could not longer erase or change an answer. It was a moment of commitment. There was anxiety about making that commitment. But, without that commitment, without the willingness to make a clear choice, there is no freedom.

In the Shema we read, “love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your might.” With all your heart. Not with a checked swing. It’s risky to love, or to create, or to commit to a worthy cause. It’s risky to put our pencils down, to say: “this is my final answer.” We can be judged. We can fail.

That’s why choosing always requires courage. When we commit our whole self, we risk striking out. But, no one ever hit a home run with a check swing.

Janine, David and Miri, Daniella, Shani, and I wish all of our friends at HNT the courage to swing for the fences and a very happy Passover!

JEWISH COMMUNITY CAMPUS UPDATE

While various community partners continue early stage discussions about a potential community campus, the main action has been on the zoning front. The City of Mercer Island issued its first draft of the Community Facility zone design standards in late January. While these standards set a baseline for discussion with the community, Herzl-Ner Tamid, the French American School of Puget Sound and the Stroum JCC, in response to this particular application, they would guide the building development of any future development of a Mercer Island property zoned Community Facility. Key parameters being discussed are: height, gross floor area (GFA), which is a measure of building density, property setbacks, lot coverage, parking and traffic flow, lighting, sound and screening. The Planning Commission has hosted one of two working sessions for committee members, with the second scheduled on April 3. Each discussion results in draft amendments, and the completed second draft is set to be presented at the Planning Commission meeting on April 17. A public hearing will likely follow and the City Council will host the first hearing in May. The City is still targeting a vote this summer. The City’s goal is to prepare a well-crafted set of draft regulations that fulfill the intent of the City Council. We will continue to monitor the City’s process and provide input as appropriate. To track the City of MI process, visit: https://letstalk.mercergov.org/JCC-rezone.

Encountering the HolyI don’t often have opportunities in my rabbinic work to have in-depth conversations about the nature of God. Frequently I speak about the meaning of the parasha, my study of Talmud, the significance of Israel, and the problems

of anti-Semitism - yet seldom do I speak about different concepts of God’s nature, let alone my own understanding of or relationship with God.

Over the past two weeks in our Miller Intro to Judaism class on Sunday mornings, I have had the unique opportunity to explore this topic with our students. Since we come from a wide range of backgrounds - Reform, Conservative, non-Jewish, and interfaith - we enjoy sharing a variety of experiences and opinions. All are curious about what Jewish tradition has to say about the nature of God.

Judaism does not have a formal dogma explaining what God is or is not. Yet as our curriculum explains this, it is careful to add that there are two “ground rules” that Judaism does follow when we do discuss God’s nature.

The first is monotheism. This is a fundamental tenet of Judaism; when our first patriarch Abraham leaves his father’s house, he does so in order to stop worshiping idols and to believe in a singular, unified, intangible God. While there is room in Jewish tradition to question the existence of God, even seriously, belief in more than one god is contrary to Jewish tradition.

The second is a balance between the idea of God as immanent (part of our world) and transcendent (beyond our world). While some Jewish philosophers lean strongly one way or the other, Jewish tradition holds space for both and does not rule either out. To explain this idea, our curriculum quotes Adon Olam. The first line expresses God’s transcendence: “The King of the World, God ruled before anything at all was created.” And the last line expresses God’s immanence: “God is with me, and I am not afraid.”

I invite you to continue exploring these ideas in your own contemplation and conversation - and if you ever want to drop by our class and talk more, you are always welcome! Rabbi Miriam Green

The Masa Program“Always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor never the tormented.” -Elie Wiesel

In our ongoing effort to take sides on important issues, we have geared Masa

at HNT this year toward Jewish political activism. Being neutral is like taking a side without acting. By speaking up about issues that are important, we all can align our values with our behaviors and actions. To achieve this goal, we have created Masa as our new learning opportunity for students in 8th through 12th grade and this year we are focusing on Jews and politics. Masa is a five-year rotation of trips and classes aimed at exploring the Jewish world. One of the central goals of HNT is to build a strong sense of community in our teenagers, creating a close connection to each other and to Judaism. Masa broadens the Jewish experience and deepens the Jewish knowledge of our teens in a compelling and attractive way. Masa connects our teens with each other and with the greater Jewish people. The trip during spring break and the classes leading up to the educational experience help to bond our students together. Masa provides an anchor for helping teens make ethical decisions at a critical time in their personal development.

From April 7-11 students in Masa will be journeying to Philadelphia and Washington, DC to enrich their understanding of the connection between Judaism and politics. Students will take a side and will not remain neutral. The classes this year have all been aimed at creating an opportunity for our students to lobby on Capitol Hill. The issues students are prepared to lobby on while in DC include combating Anti-Semitism, gun violence prevention, protecting and supporting immigrants and refugees, promoting peace and a shared society between Israelis and Palestinians, and disability rights. Max Patashnik from the Federation has worked with our group on matching issues with legislation to help support our lobbying process.

While in DC we will have the opportunity to meet with representatives from the offices of Senator Maria Cantwell, Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal and Congressmen Adam Smith for our lobbying experience. Jewish political activism is all about getting involved and not being neutral on moral, social or political issues. During our trip we will also have an opportunity to take a monument tour on Segway’s, visit the Holocaust Museum, and meet with a Shoah survivor related to the Jewish partisan movement, as well as representatives from AIPAC.

While in Philadelphia we will visit the National Museum of American Jewish History and will take a walking tour through the Jewish quarter with Dr. Michael Schatz. We will also meet with Attorney General Joshua Shapiro of the State of Pennsylvania as well as visit University of Pennsylvania Hillel and engage in a social action project at the KlienLife Senior and Community Center.

Thank you to Audrey Covner and Michaela Covner for being our two other chaperones on the trip with me along with 21 students from HNT. A very special thank you to Gwenn and Dean Polik for support of these experiential and educational classes and trips. Stay tuned for next month's Hakol when you can read some of the reflections from students regarding their educational journey.

Garinim Tot Shabbat Fridays • 9:45 AM – 10:30 PM • SJCC Join Dr. Krigel and Morah Chava at the SJCC for this fun opportunity to sing, dance and move. Babies, parents and grandparents are welcome to participate at the SJCC.

Thank you to Audrey Covner for being our special guest in the Masa class and for being one of our chaperones on the trip. We are now gearing up for a fantastic journey to Philadelphia and DC. Great work Audrey in helping to prepare our students for their lobbying and advocacy experience!

Working in small groups during class each month, Masa students prepare to present their own personalized lobbying pitch related to issues they care about on a personal level while in DC.
