    A MESSAGE FROM JOHN LACEY

Hello dear friends and supporters of our wonderful Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. Another Season is upon us – a time for reflection and celebration.

For 61 years, I have attended the performances of the CPO. Sixty-one years ago, Naomi and I had just arrived from England, and in 1957 the Jubilee Auditorium had just opened and the Orchestra had a venue – with all its acoustical problems – to perform in. I well remember one of the first conductors, Henry Plucker, and even some of the Orchestra members. Grand times – and we have grown from there to a fabulous musical force ready to perform the most inspiring music. What a wonderful achievement!

There have been ups and downs, but I like to think that, partly because of Naomi’s love and dedication to music and the members of the Orchestra, we have been able to smooth some of them. She was a dedicated worker with the Board, Cork & Canvas, the drive and inspiration behind the creation of the ‘Friends of the CPO and Musical Heritage’ and a partner, participant and mentor of the Virtuoso Programme.

A spark has gone out in Calgary. Her wonderful spirit is no longer with us and many miss her. Amazingly, I have been contacted by friends from more than 60 years ago and from around the world, all expressing their sorrow at her passing and the loss of that spark.

This is why the 2017/2018 Season is so special. It is a celebration of all she would have wished to accomplish.

The Orchestra is strong and performing magnificently and the Virtuoso Programme enters its tenth year – what a tremendous achievement, and what a year! We try to bring you the best and I think the presence of Yo-Yo Ma is testament to that aim and the promise we made.

This Season is not a time for mourning – let’s do what Naomi would have done – enjoy and support the Orchestra and the arts in Calgary, have fun, and remember all those wonderful things that are here for us to enjoy.

    Please support this dream.

    John

“ He may be the greatest cellist in the world and, some would argue, the greatest cellist ever…Yo-Yo Ma consolidated everything that came before, made it look effortless, and somehow found time to go past the cello and refashion himself into something bigger. He has invented a term for what he does, though he is too modest to apply it to himself except as a goal. He is the consummate ‘citizen musician.’”
