Celebrating Life, in Black?

CABSA, Gender, Gender Based Violence and Thursdays in Black

CABSA and gender…

▪ Prevention messages are often over simplified messages

▪ Aimed primarily at the individual and ignoring context and the complexities of our vulnerability

▪ Assuming that everyone has full autonomy in their relationships

▪ Cannot talk about HIV or begin to understand it without a deeper understanding of gender, power and the effect of gender based violence

You can learn about condoms, know fidelity or abstinence can protect you from AIDS, but if your husband is HIV-positive, violent and wants sex, there is not a whole lot you can do.

From “How AIDS kills Africa’s battered women” 17 August 2003

A simple, but practical campaign…

www.thursdaysinblack.co.za

“We encourage local churches to join hands with people around the world by wearing black on Thursdays to indicate that we are tired of putting up with rape and violence in our communities and that we have a desire for a community where we can all walk safely without fear of being beaten up, verbally abused, raped, or being discriminated against due to one’s gender or sexual orientation.”

When we choose to wear black we STAND

▪ In solidarity with 1 in 3 women worldwide who face violence in their lives

▪ In protest against systems and societies that encourage violence in any form

▪ In mourning for men, women and children who are harmed and killed in sexual violence

▪ For awareness and knowledge about the challenges of SGBV

▪ In the hope that a different reality is possible
