No. 14 15th May 2019 Week 3, Term 2 2019 Kia ora and welcome to this fortnight’s newsletter. CELEBRATING LEARNING & ACHIEVEMENT Thank you so much to everyone who attended our powhiri to welcome our new learners and their whanau to our place of learning. It is so heart-warming to see our students leading with increased confidence and taking ownership for this special welcoming ceremony. It is also lovely that existing members of our Karaka School whanau come along to welcome our newest members. Following the powhiri was a hui and we thank those who were able to join us for their valuable contributions. Congratulations to the team who represented us so superbly at the Barbarians Rugby tournament last Sunday. The team played incredibly well, winning their 3 games. Mrs Sutton was so proud of the sportsmanship and determination they all showed. A big thank you Mr Glover and Mr Flett and to all the families who supported the team on the day. Pink Breakfast/Mufti Day Have you dusted off your pink shirt (wig and tutu!) ready for the Pink Shirt Breakfast this Friday at 7.30am. We look forward to sharing this meal with you as a way of coming together to Korero Mai, Korero Atu, Mauri Tu, Mauri Ora – Speak Up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying! Karaka School is committed to creating an environment where all people feel safe, valued and respected. If you haven’t got your tickets as yet there are only 10 more left - be in quick! If you cannot make the breakfast please come dressed in pink with a gold coin donation, funds raised are donated to the Mental Health Foundation.

Good News Call of the Week: So proud of our Good News Call of the Week last Friday. Bailey S has made huge strides in her learning by pursuing personal hiranga. She has taken every opportunity to progress in her learning even when things got a little tricky! Bailey is also so supportive of others, consistently displaying our value of poipoi. Please remember that there are a number of ways to report an absence:

On our absentee line

Via the absentee link on our website

Emailing the office direct

Emailing the teacher or through dojo

Calling into the office or getting a sibling to report the absence

This is a Health and Safety requirement.

PhotoLife

We have now received the unique shoot keys from Photolife. These were handed out yesterday, so please check your child’s bag to make sure they have theirs. Photos are now uploaded and ready to view on Photolife’s website.

Our school’s free delivery period expires at Midnight on 2nd June 2019. The free delivery deadline date is clearly displayed when families go online to view their photos.

Ag Day Meeting— Our first meeting took place last night. Congratulations to Andrew Graham and Richard Mansell (Co-chairpersons) and Debbie Coppock and Gaylene Murdoch (Co-Secretaries). It was great to see some new faces. The next meeting is set for Tuesday 18th June.

Entry form and Information Booklet—The office and committee are working on producing a booklet with all the information you may need to know e.g. animal care, projects, PTA information, stall information, order forms and entry forms. We hope to have this out in a couple of weeks.

Samosas / Oxford Pies—These will be ready for collection on Tuesday 21st May, collection from 2.30pm from the Hall.

Knowledge-A-Thon—Taking place on Friday 24th May. The sponsors are being gathered, the practising is happening at school and hopefully at home and everyone (including us adults) are learning new things. We have got awesome prizes which include Warehouse vouchers, lunch-room vouchers and scholastic books for most money gathered, most sponsors gathered, best decorated covers AND most exciting of all—the children who get 100% will go into a draw to win a family outing AND the class/awhina who achieves the best overall scores, gets to have a movie afternoon including popcorn with Mrs Glover.

We have a couple of events in the planning process, but alas, the event we were planning on June 22nd has had to be delayed—so no need to save this date. We will keep you posted on new dates.

Horse Riding Lessons

Learn to ride and care for a horse in our Ponies After School programme in Waiuku. Children are taught to ride or can improve their current skills. Weekend lessons also available.
