BMH-BJ is the largest traditional and orthodox synagogue in Denver, Colorado. We are the second oldest congregation in the area and just a few years younger than the city of Denver itself. BMH was founded in 1897, BJ was founded in 1922, and the two merged in 1996.

A High Holy Day Message from Rabbi Chaitovsky...The Book of LifeHerman Wouk, the acclaimed Jewish American novelist and playwright, (The Caine Mutiny, Winds of War, War and Remembrance, Marjorie Morningstar and many other works) was recently interviewed on CBS Good Morning. He is 102, gets around in a wheelchair and always has extra oxygen by his side. He announced that he just finished writing his “next, and most probably, last” novel.

Herman Wouk is also a devoutly Orthodox Jew - there he was on TV with his long white beard and a large kippah on his head. Many years ago, he wrote a different sort of book. It was a deeply personal reflection on Judaism and

Jewish living. It was called, “This is My God,” and to this day, it remains one of the most intelligent and readable introductions to Judaism available.

The High Holy Days are upon us. I want to share a small excerpt from the book that deals with the overarching theme of the Yamim Noraim – teshuvah, repentance. Here it is: The past can be cancelled by a true cry from the heart to G-d and a return to His law. This holds not only for the annual reckoning, but to the last hour a man lives; so my grandfather taught me.He had in his Bronx apartment a lodger less learned than himself, and much fiercer in piety. One day when we were studying the laws of repentance together, the lodger burst from his room. “What!” he said. “The atheist guzzles whiskey and eats pork and wallows with his women all his long life, and then repents the day before he dies and stands guiltless? While I spend a lifetime trying to please G-d?” My grandfather pointed to the book. “So it is written,” he said gently. “Written!” the lodger roared. “There are books and there are books.”

The lodger’s outrage seemed highly logical. My grandfather pointed out that cancelling the past does not turn it into a record of achievement. It leaves it blank, a waste of spilled years. A man had better return, he said, while time remains to write a life worth scanning.

Teshuvah is not always easy. Change is hard work! Many things get in the way. But it is important work, and it must be done because each of us is authoring a book – the Book of Our Life. Every day, we add sentences, paragraphs and chapters to the book. Now is the time to give some serious thought to the editing process. Teshuvah is a kind of editing. Its results will likely not show up in the chapters already written, but will make themselves readily apparent in those still waiting to be written. Leshana tova tikateivu – may we all be inscribed into the Book, for health, for life, for happiness and for peace.

High Holiday Notes...Awesome Days of MusicAt last!! After years of covering all clergy and multiple other duties during most of summer, I joined over four hundred participants in July attending the twenty-eighth annual North American Jewish Choral Festival in the Catskills. To put it delicately, the décor and facilities at the Hudson Valley Spa and Resort evoked distinct memories of the 60’s and 70’s …, but then, it was all about music making, study and camaraderie, not the faded “retro-chic” décor. The annual conference is hosted by the Hazamir Organisation whose mission is to promote all Jewish choral music, whether classical, synagogue, medieval, contemporary, Yiddish, Israeli, folk, or other genres. It attracts people from across America and elsewhere from all walks of life. Cantors, rabbis, educators, professional and amateur musicians, business owners, lawyers, doctors; name it and they were there, brought together by a shared love for Jewish music. What fascinated me is that overwhelmingly, from teens to retirees, most sing in Hazamir chapters, or particularly, in synagogue choirs. Their reasons were as varied as their backgrounds but they speak of a sense of community and “belonging” they feel when creating “Shul” music, especially on Holidays or special occasions. This sense of community motivates hours of rehearsal and performance. To quote some of the participants: “It helps me access the prayers and their purpose”, “I connect with my fellow congregants through music”, “We are three generations coming together for a shared experience” , “I love the music”(this from a trained opera singer!) and amazingly: “I joined the choir when preparing to chant Torah for my daughter’s Bat mitzvah.” No matter the reasons, this diverse group from across the spectrum of Jewish practice believes that choral music creates, builds and sustains community. It unifies, breaks barriers, and offers a common shared experience like no other. Musical unity transcends their differences and re-affirms and elevates their Jewish identity. No matter the level of musicality or Hebrew skills, nor the grasp of the prayers even when reading the English translations, music reaches deep into the soul, plumbing the depths of whatever drives our sense of spirituality.I returned, exhilarated and confident that Jewish choral music is vital and relevant to Jewish communities worldwide. Contrary to some naysayers, it continues growing and assuming greater importance. Many of us come together on the High Holy Days hoping to experience that unifying sense of community. How much more accessible it becomes when we join in raising our diverse voices, for in so doing we become one voice. To quote a well-known song, in these troubled and divisive times, in the United States, Israel and elsewhere, music is “a bridge over troubled waters.” Therefore, together, in one unified voice, let us cross that bridge as we gather to celebrate the High Holy Days, transforming the “Days of Awe” into Awesome Days of Music.Elaine, Justin, Philippa, Jakub, Eitan, Asher, Lori and Dalia join me in wishing you a great New Year 5778, sealed for health happiness, peace and prosperity –“Leshana Tova Tikateivu Veteichateimu” - may it be written and sealed.

From The Executive Director...First and most important I would like to take this opportunity to wish each and every member and their family a Happy and Healthy New Year. We are very excited for the upcoming High Holidays at BMH-BJ and we want to let you know the entire staff is here to make this a joyous, welcoming and safe experience for all of our members, families and visitors.

I want to express to all our members that of utmost priority to our staff is the safety and well being of those that are attending this upcoming season. We live in a

different world where at any time we could face a serious security issue in our synagogue. We understand the magnitude of this problem and need your help to achieve our safety goals. We need you to make sure that when entering the building this year that you have your tickets in hand along with a picture identification. We will be very strict about this policy. There will be private security along with members of the Denver Police Department at each door and throughout our complex. If at any time these inconvenience you, we apologize, but we want you to know that we are doing this to protect you and your families. We also need you to be our eyes during your visit this year. At any time if something appears to be questionable or out of the ordinary, if it makes you uncomfortable, let us know immediately. Find a security guard, the police or a staff member without delay.

This year we have made the decision to have open seating in our main sanctuary except for those Society members who choose to have a reserve seat. The response to this news has been met with overwhelming support along with a small amount of trepidation. It has become a very difficult process for the office and volunteers to place every member in an assigned seat. At the same time we observed over the last few High Holidays that attendance during each of our services was sporadic and in only a very few cases did the Sanctuary appear close to full. We also felt strongly that as we opened up our seating we would encourage all members including those with reserved seats to sit in different places among different people. We truly believe that this will create a more welcoming feel as members meet and greet each other. I would suggest that you take the time to introduce yourself to those around you that you do not know or who you would normally not see during the High Holidays. Live a little. Let yourselves go and meet someone new. Make this a warm and friendly holiday season.

Finally, we want to welcome the members of the DAT Minayn community to our building. They will be holding services in Fisher Hall this year. All of our services in all of our venues, including the DAT Minyan service, are open for you to visit.

May Hashem bless every one with a safe, healthy and prosperous New Year.

Rabbi Jonathan Gross has served congregations in Omaha, Nebraska and Baltimore, Maryland. Often called “Rabbi of the Future,” Rabbi Gross speaks and writes about the hidden costs of technology and culture, and how the price is sometimes paid at the expense of some of our most important and cherished values. He earned his B.A. in mathematics and his rabbinic ordination from Yeshiva University. Rabbi Gross acts as a consultant to synagogue and church communities interested in growing their membership and impact, and in making their message relevant for the 21st century without sacrificing their core values. He has authored four books on technology, politics, finance, and culture. His latest book, “Ai Vey: Jewish Thoughts on Thinking Machines,” is the first book to explore the impact of artificial intelligence on faith and religion. His writings can be found at www.ThatsGross.org.

A Message from our President...As we enter the New Year I want to share some brief thoughts with you about our Shul. Now is a very dynamic and exciting time for our synagogue. Our school is thriving, we are committed to programming for and attracting young families while maintaining the rich and responsive culture we have built at BMH-BJ. You matter to us but we need your help. Help us help you.

Everyone wants and counts on a thriving, welcoming and supportive Shul experience, unfortunately not all want to or are able to pay for it. Currency comes in many forms. Money, time, ideas, support and commitment. As we embark on this New Year, we are challenged with raising funds in our High Holiday campaign, to improve the look and feel of our aging building and to attract new members. We need you. We need all forms of currency. This is your Shul, the community’s Shul, and we are working hard to continue and improve on the long traditions and high standards BMH-BJ has always stood for. So I ask you here and now to share. Share with us your money, your time, your ideas and commitment. We are strong and getting stronger. We can be strongest together.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff at BMH-BJ I thank you. From my family to yours I wish you and your families a joyous, sweet and prosperous New Year.

Safety and SecurityYour safety and the safety of our members, families and visitors are extremely important to us. With all the ongoing events that have been occurring locally, nationally and globally, we are going to be increasing our security measures this year. These measures will be in effect for all of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. We are expecting a large turnout this year as DAT Minyan will be joining us for the Yom Tovim, so please be respectful of our security measures.Anyone entering the building WILL BE REQUIRED TO HAVE A PHOTO ID AND TICKET. This will include anyone who is 16 years or older if they are entering the building without their parents. This rule will be STRICTLY ENFORCED. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause, but your safety is our number one concern. Please ensure that children are with you and are registered for their planned youth activities. They should not be outside the building at any time. Please contact the office if you have any concerns regarding security and the policies that we are employing.Wishing everyone a L’Shana Tova!

Fun Times @ BMH-BJ Preschool...We had a fantastic water-filled summer camp! Every week, we experienced a new theme complete with visits from the Denver Zoo, Bricks for Kids, McDuff the Police Dog and the Children’s museum. Children experienced enrichments every week with a Child’s Song, Coach Peter and Arts & Minds too!

As our school grows, so does our staff! We are thrilled to welcome new teachers to BMH-BJ preschool for this upcoming school year. All staff will participate in a meaningful week of staff development with workshops in social/emotional development in young children, Seamless Judaism, effective documentation, STEM and staff team-building.

Our first day of school is Monday August 21st and we are welcoming close to 100 children this year! We invite all our current and new families to meet their teachers at ourPreschool Open House Friday August 18th from 9-10:30 am.

We have a host of fully committed parents helping create a phenomenal preschool experience for children AND their families. The preschool PTO, chaired by Beth Nikolayevsky and Goldie Fishleder is greeting families with donuts and coffee on the first two days of school and hosting a Back-to-School picnic/play date in Robinson Park on Sunday Sept. 9th at 9:30 am.

Mark your calendars for ‘Pizza in the Hut,’ a night in the BMH-BJ Sukkah for young families on Sunday October 8th at 5:30!!

Our new Preschool Board, chaired by Sarah Raphaely is lending support to the school and works closely with the synagogue board and staff. The Board is spear-heading our Playground Renovation Initiative. We’ve already received a $30,000 grant from Qualistar to begin the process. Now, we need your help reaching our goal of $250,000 to start and complete our playground renovation! To learn more or to help with this initiative, please call or email Preschool Board President Sarah Raphaely at 303-522-8583 or [email protected].

PLAYGROUND RENOVATION INITIATIVE Help us raise the funds* needed to renovate this essential part of our preschool. A well-designed playground fosters curiosity, learning, and socialization and is an extremely valuable asset in encouraging the growth of young children. An updated, natural playground will give our school a competitive advantage in terms of enrollment, which in turn provides an outstanding feeder of young families to BMH-BJ. NUTURING A LOVE OF NATURE We’ve designed an exciting and interactive outdoor space that encourages children to care for the environment while tending to their own garden. NATURAL, INSPIRED DESIGN Working with experts, we have designed a natural, inspired playground that incorporates play as a vital, integral aspect of our educational curriculum that extends learning beyond the classroom. A SENSORY EXPERIENCE The playground will not only address gross motor needs of children, but also provide dynamic experiences that touch all five senses and offer space for imaginative play.
