BMH-BJ is a unique, independent orthodox congregation serving a diverse membership. We are united by our love for each other, a respect for all Jews, support for Israel and a commitment to traditional Jewish values and authentic Jewish living. Our community includes a vibrant morning and evening minyan every day of the year with a mechitzah, a family seating experience on Shabbat and holy day mornings, We host a dynamic, award winning and growing preschool program, a highly innovative Religious school where parents learn along with their children, and a variety of daily and weekly Torah and adult education classes and programs for lifelong learners. Our calendar is filled with a wide variety religious, cultural, and social events and activities, created to meet the needs of people of every age.

We are an historic synagogue with a rich past and a bright future. BMH was founded in 1897 while BJ was founded in 1922 and together merged in 1996 creating the BMH-BJ we know and love today. Our community shares in an immense love of learning and growth, God and mitzvot, compassion and justice. To become part of our BMH-BJ community is to place yourself in a synagogue whose history stretches back more than 116 years and is alive with vibrancy, passion and inclusivity. We invite you to come and experience one of our myriad offerings!

Rabbinical Reflections: Am Yisrael Chai by Rabbi Yaakov Chaitovsky

Take a look at the calendar for the next few months. Purim. Pesach. The Omer. Yom HaShoa. Yom HaZikaron. Yom HaAtzmaut. Lag B’Omer. Yom Yerushalyim. Shavuot. At no other time of the year does our calendar more accurately reflect the realities of Jewish history - the ups and downs, the anxieties, the perils and persecutions, and of course, our salvations and survival. Against all

odds, with the help of God and our own determination, we survived the anti-Semitic genocidal whims of Pharoahs, Ceasars, Hamans and Hitlers and their ilk throughout history. The “downs” of history, sadly, continue to this very day. I recently spoke about the law passed by the lower parliament in Poland which would impose fines or mandate up to three years in jail for anyone claiming that Poland bears any responsibility for crimes against humanity committed by Germany on Polish soil. Poland, in the words of Beata Mazurek, spokeswoman for Poland’s ruling Law & Justice party and deputy speaker of the lower chamber of parliament, has “had enough of accusing Poland and Poles of German atrocities.” In short, Poland, a land where three million Jews lived before the war and only about 380,000 survived, a country selected by the Nazis for six extermination camps – Chelmno, Belzec, Sobibor, Treblinka, Auschwitz-Birkenau and Majdanek – and more than 700 ghettos, dare not any longer be challenged for the role it played during the Holocaust! I pointed out the inescapable and bitter irony of this law’s timing. On the very Friday which marked the 73rd anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz–Birkenau, a horrible Nazi death camp located in Poland, on the very Friday which marked the start ofInternational Holocaust Remembrance Day, a day meant to remind the world of the sin of silence in the face of evil and the crime of complicity associated with those who made German genocide possible, the Polish government passed this sad law. It is nothing less than a legal whitewashing and distortion of what almost everyone acknowledges as the truth. A statement by the US Holocaust Museum underscores that “to carry out the Final Solution across an entire continent, the Germans required the collaboration and complicity of many individuals in every country, from leaders, public officials, police, and soldiers to ordinary citizens. In every country locals participated in a variety of ways—as clerks, cooks, and confiscators of property; as managers or participants in roundups and deportations; as informants; sometimes as perpetrators of violence against Jews on their own initiative; and sometimes as hands-on murderers in killing operations.” Yair Lapid, a member of the Israeli parliament and son of a Holocaust survivor, condemned the law and said: The Holocaust may have been “conceived in Germany but hundreds of thousands of Jews were murdered without ever meeting a German soldier. There were Polish death camps and no law can ever change that.” The Jewish calendar reminds us of the buffeting winds and stormy seas of our collective history. Clearly, sadly, those winds and storms have not subsided. They rage even to this day. Our calendar also urges us to be diligent and to be faithful – because a better day is surely ahead.

Am Yisrael Chai!

Cantor’s Notes:Please, “do attempt this at home”by Cantor Joel Lichterman

I am sure that many are familiar with that often used, cautionary statement, “DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS AT HOME, SERIOUS INJURIES MAY RESULT.”It is widely acknowledged that congregants who regularly attend synagogue value consistency and

predictability. Why disturb a sense of “balance” and “equilibrium” and the familiarity that comes from years of saying the same prayers, singing the same melodies! All this was uppermost in my mind when on Saturday, January 27th – Shabbat Shira, I decided, with some trepidation, to simultaneously introduce new ritual, liturgy and music to our services – not one, or two, but three “innovations”! I was concerned, obviously! How would our large crowd, some 330-350 “regulars”, “irregulars” and many visitors react? Would these “innovations”, rather than encouraging, be an obstacle and a barrier to their participation? Would they be turned-off by something new and unfamiliar? Would the congregation react positively or negatively to change? Fortunately, I need not have worried. From all accounts, e-mails, texts, calls and many conversations, congregants loved the “challenge of discovery”, embraced the music and are asking for these changes to be incorporated into our regular services! This, of course, is one of the main objectives of our annual Shabbat Shira experience, a platform from which to explore and hopefully embrace new customs, rituals and music. I believe that you could easily apply the above Shabbat Shira experience to your Seder, whether as host or at another’s table. Think about it, we are familiar and comfortable with its rituals and practices. We expect to eat Matzah, we anticipate a delicious meal, we “kvell” at either our children’s or grandchildren’s singing the Four Questions. Our Hagadah narrative has remained consistent for centuries. The Seder to many is like synagogue services; we look forward to and anticipate the consistent, familiar, and comfortable “order of things”. However, our scholars encourage us to “ask questions”, explore new ideas, be daring, try something different. Whilst the Hagadah offers structure to the proceedings, I suggest that it is also a guiding framework for the Seder, within which are multiple opportunities for innovation, and the creation of something new, exciting, and stimulating, especially through the use of music and song! Go ahead, dare to be different. However, I offer one cautionary observation – avoid political discussions, for the inevitable heat these are likely to generate may lead to an Exodus from your table! My family and I wish you a chag sameach v’kasher.

A Message from our Executive Director: Creating a Legacyby Ilene Rosen

At the beginning of this year BMH-BJ was awarded a significant grant and training from the Rose Community Foundation’s Life and Legacy Program to help develop and continue our Legacy Society. We would like to thank the Foundation for this opportunity. A legacy gift is a planned future donation to a charity, given through a will or other form of designation. It is a decision that each person makes in their own financial planning process, considering their charitable wishes and values. People create legacy gifts for many different reasons. For some, it is a way to ensure their memory lives on. For others, it is a way to ensure that BMH-BJ can continue its important work. Others find that it represents a way to facilitate the tax implications that come with the transfer of one’s estate to surviving relatives. What better way to thank our synagogue that has had an impact on your life, or the life of someone you love, than by contributing from your estate? By creating a legacy, you are making a significant contribution to the future sustainability of the meaningful work you love done by our synagogue. Gifts both large and small are important — legacy giving is not just for the wealthy. Everyone who supports BMH-BJ is at a different stage of their life and able to give at a different level. Whatever your specific situation may be, we can help you find a legacy giving option that suits your circumstances. Just like those before us have given to our future, let us give to the next generation. Join our Legacy Society today.

A Message from Our President: A Season to Celebrateby Jeff Kline

As we are about to enter the spring season we celebrate. We celebrate our annual event and our good friend Joe Silver. We celebrate Purim and the carnival that our preschool will be organizing. We celebrate our upcoming Purim seudah with our friends at the DAT Minyan.

We celebrate with and for our many friends. Together we celebrate the progress and many programs our synagogue provides for our members and the community. We are dedicated to continuing to provide programs, events and services for all. We celebrate and appreciate the wealth of experience, knowledge and desire of many in our congregation to lead, teach, volunteer and ensure the success of our many offerings. We celebrate that we are many things to many people. BMH-BJ opens its doors and welcomes all to join us, participate with us, learn and pray with us and be an integral part of what we are. As the president of BMH-BJ, I continue to learn valuable lessons from you all. There is no greater compliment to the success of what, together, we are building than your participation, belief and support. Throughout the year I have repeatedly asked what does our shul mean to you. It is clear that it means many different things to many different people. Not just you, our members, but the entire community. I take this opportunity to thank you. Thank you for understanding and appreciating the value and purpose that our shul provides you and so many others. Join me in celebrating, building, supporting and facilitating the on-going health, spirit and purpose of our shul to you and so many others.

Hakarat HaTov - Honoring our beloved members: Joe Silver

Joe Silver is the 2018 BMH-BJ Annual

Event Honoree

“Do everything in kindness.” When you meet Joe, you are greeted with an outpouring of love. Joe sees the divine in each person he meets and in the heroes of the past. Joe’s heroes are defined as those who commit themselves to kindness, to compassion, and to Tikkun Olam – making the world a better place. Joe lives and breathes his core values. You’ve probably seen them spelled out on his car or heard them spoken as mantras of advice from Joe himself.

Joe is a walking reminder of the goodness that can fill the world and a friendly voice calling each of us to act.

“Treat everybody else as if they were you.” When you meet Joe, the first question he asks is: “Are you acting as a good human being?” The rest, as we know from Rabbi Hillel, is commentary. Of course, Joe is interested in your life, your passions, and your interests. He always makes a point to ask about your family – your parents, your partner, your children. Joe will remind you to express appreciation to those around you and gratitude for your good health.

“Your health is your wealth.” When you meet Joe, he might recall stories of athletes who broke down barriers, who set positive examples for others, and whose greatest accomplishments progressed society more than just their sport. Joe might even share some of his own athletic achievements in baseball, basketball, football, softball, tennis, track, golf, bowling, and swimming. He might also ask if you can return him to the spry young age of 18.

“Stay on the right side of the grass.” When you meet Joe, a lifetime of charitable work and care for others – human and animal alike – stares back at you. Though he is not one to sing his own praises, the Joe Silver Kindness Charities have provided for the needs of over three million individuals, and in many ways making Joe a true practitioner of the Eight Levels of Charity codified by Maimonides centuries ago. But rather than spend his time with you reflecting on his own accomplishments, Joe offers you boundless encouragement for your current and future efforts in making the world a better place.

“Be as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own success.” So when you meet Joe, remember that he sees the best in you – your extraordinary desire to improve the lives of those in need – and supports you in your journey. When you meet Joe, remember to hold kindness in the highest regard and to share your divine spark with others. When you meet Joe, remember to be grateful for life and love, health and happiness, friendship and freedom. And when you meet Joe, enjoy the moments you can spend here in the paradise of today.

Highlighting Our Funds

Chesed Charity Fund & Feed The Needy FundThese two funds provide the resources necessary for helping hands to support our synagogue members during difficult times. The work of our synagogue, particularly our Hands on Chesed Group, are crucial to the spiritual growth of our community. The Jewish value of chesed in action is a cornerstone of a Jewish life and our community life together. Doing things together and for each other as a family

strengthens not only our community but our character. You can learn more about our Chesed Group’s activities and contact us to get involved through our website at www.bmh-bj.org/get-involved/chesed. Floyd Saliman Youth Scholarship Fund & Camp Scholarship Fund

These two funds help send our children to Jewish summer camps and youth programs throughout the year. For many of us, our childhood experiences in youth groups and summer camps have been the core formative moments in our Jewish identities. By supporting the Floyd Saliman Youth Scholarship Fund and the Camp Scholarship Fund, we ensure that the next generations of our Jewish community grow, stay involved, and

become leaders in an ever-changing environment. Senior Chavurah Programs Fund

Our Senior Chavurah organizes engaging monthly programs for our longtime members at BMH-BJ. These programs include enthralling lectures, captivating personal stories, and informative sessions on personal finance and beyond. The Senior Chavurah Programs Fund ensures that the highest quality programs are consistently offered to our community members. Senior Chavurah programs at BMH-

BJ take place on Thursdays at 1:00pm in the BMH-BJ Gallery. Upcoming programs are on March 8, April 19, and May 10.

BMH-BJ WOMEN’S LEAGUE

What drives a Women’s League? It really comes down to what the Sisterhood of a shul cares about. We believe that it should care about tradition and building on those traditions to create a strong future. For generations, the Women’s League has played a vital role in the daily activities and successes of the BMH-BJ synagogue, providing educational and cultural programs, preschool support, financial support, event planning and coordination, and so many other functions. Over many years, this role has been based on a firm commitment that we not only must carve out a place for women within a synagogue but deserve that place. To that end, we are asking you to re-commit to the traditions and the spirit of our Women’s League representing our synagogue. We can again be as strong as we were when your mothers and grandmothers were leaders within this Sisterhood. True, the motivations for belonging years ago are different now. Our lives have changed, and our lifestyles are more hectic than ever. But if we allow ourselves to lose that feeling of a sisterhood, of sharing and remembering, of imparting time-worn traditions to those who will come after us, we run the risk of losing far more than just a few hours of our limited time. Consider that your participation, for a few hours this year, could make a huge difference to the life of our Women’s League. We meet on the second Sunday of each month in the Office Conference Room at 9:30 a.m. for one hour and have developed an ambitious agenda of activities targeted to all our families. Our next meeting will be held on Sunday, March 11, 2018. Come once and bring someone with you -- perhaps your daughter, your niece, your cousin or a friend. We are looking forward to seeing you and working together to rebuild that feeling of belonging to something really important.

LifeCycles Anniversary

On March 23, 2018, Sam and Eunice Finer will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary. Native Denverites from the West side, they have enjoyed a long and remarkable marriage together. Both say that the time has passed quickly and 1948 seems like just yesterday. “The time has really flown by, every day is just wonderful,” says Sam, and Eunice adds “He’s an awfully nice guy!” The Finers have been members of BMH for many years and they are now the Matriarch and Patriarch of their family, which includes son Meritt Finer, daughter Gayle (William) Talbott, adopted grandchildren Jeremy Willoughby and his wife Adrianna and their three children Brooklyn (9), Logan (6), and London (2). Sam’s secret of a successful marriage is always staying in love. “I am in love with her as much today as I was the day we

married.” He recommends that all people enjoy and celebrate every moment we have because life is shorter than you think. The entire family is looking forward to sharing this simcha together in Denver and invites the community to join them on Saturday, March 24th for the occasion. Gayle and Meritt both say that their parents were the most amazing mentors in the world, because whenever they needed time and attention, their parents were always there. And they are to this day still guiding and teaching with kindness and chesed. Sam likes to support Wounded Warriors, being a veteran himself and having served in the US Navy. Eunice has been involved in a multitude of giving projects which include clothing to the needy and Meals-on-Wheels. The Finers often travel with various items in the trunk of their car, like blankets, clothing, and food to give to homeless people they might encounter on their outings. Growing up, their children were touched by the welcoming and open way in which their parents have always treated anyone they meet. They have taught the value of friends and life and showing gratitude for every day that we live.
