Day of the Dead –Día de Muertos
The origins of Day of theDead celebrations in Méxicocan be traced back to indige-nous peoples, such as theAztec and Maya. November1st honors deceased chil-dren and infants, whereasdeceased adults are hon-ored on November 2nd. Díade Muertos is a celebration, not of death, but of the con-tinuum of life and is characterized by humor and joy. Many people build altars in theirhomes, offices or restaurants, incorporating a Christian Cross, images of the Virgin Mary, candles, pictures of deceased relatives, as well as their favorite food and drink. Altar con-tests are popular events in Los Cabos and reflect the Mexican heritage.
MEXICAN CELEBRATIONS
Nativity Scene
In México, it is traditional to build the nativ-ity scene on December 16, the day of thefirst Posada.Traditionally, the scene is com-pleted as time goes by. Baby Jesus is notadded until December 24.The Three WiseMen are not included in the nativity sceneuntil January 6,Three Kings’ Day.The nativi-ty scene is traditionally not taken downuntil February 2, Candlemas, the day whichmarks the end of the Epiphany season. You’ll see nativity scenes in restaurants, public offices and plazas, or you can addMexican spirit to your Christmas decora-tion and make one for your home.
Add un toque mexicano (a Mexican touch) to yourChristmas celebrations with this simple yet traditionalrecipe for buñuelos, sugared fried tortillas.
• 1 cup granulated sugar • 1/2 tsp ground cloves• 12 flour tortillas • 1/2 cup corn oil • 1 tsp cinnamon
Slice each tortilla into eight wedges. Heat oil in skilletover high heat. Fry tortilla wedges until crisp. Drain onpaper towels. On flat plate, mix sugar, cinnamon andcloves.
